Pretty sure I built a few of these in Age of Empires. Took me 1000 gold, 1000 wood, and 1000 stone. Took at least five minutes! What a wonder.

Whoa -- an eagle caught a shark! Akshually it's an osprey, and it caught a Spanish mackerel, but "eagle catches shark" sounds better. Still impressive.

91 Otters! Sea otters are so sweet. The sea otter surrogate program at Monterey Bay Aquarium pairs surrogate moms with orphaned baby otters. The moms teach them how to forage for food, groom and grow up to be otters. Their success rate is pretty good for returning the babies to the wild.

The Elkhorn Slough is populated with a lot of the otters returned to the wild and they are doing pretty well. There's a live cam I watch when I'm sad or stressed. They are lovely creatures.

95 My grandparents farm in Southeast Norway on the North Sea still has a large concrete gun emplacement down at the beach. There is a 40 foot long bunker about 150 feet back from the beach and a 30 foot metal barn was built by the occupiers on the property. The British would feint invasion to keep the Krauts occupied and when they did the Germans would kick the family out of the farmhouse to keep troops. There were 11 kids. My Mom found a Luger in that bunker right after the Germans surrendered. She was 12.

I did about 200 Volksmarches in West Germany. I swear there is a castle on every hilltop (berg) there. In Graffenwhore we were still training on the sand Hitler imported to train for desert warfare. There is bunkers and pill boxes all over that place. Pretty sure we were shitting in shitters from about 1930.

I just saw an amazing documentary on film preservation, "Film: The Living Record of Our Memory". The most amazing part was learning that digital films are backed up on 35mm film, because for all its vulnerabilities if not stored properly, it is still the most safe and stable medium for film. Digital is constantly being migrated between mediums and from server to server.

One preservationist said the newer the recording medium, the faster the information brakes down.

Put remote controls and a video cam on a core-drilling rig. Drill down until explosives show up in the cuttings. Pull out of the hole and lower a high explosive charge with an electric detonator, and move the rig off the hole. Fire off the charge. If it doesn't work, try again. If the mine goes off while drilling, well, mission accomplished.

I was stationed in Bamberg. There are statues all over the place. Some are founders of the city, some are from the 30 years war. Place was cool. So cool I spent my first six months just wandering around locally. Then I went everywhere I could. Just jump on a train and go. Be back by PT and I was good.

My dad and I stayed in a 1400's hunting lodge just up the hill from the Victoria statue, in '95. It's...not my favorite style of sculpture, but you'll seldom see anything more German. One hell of a view into a long-ass [currently] French valley on the other side. You certainly can read it as either/both Rhinelanders keeping a watch for invasion (which after all did happen a lot), and gazing longingly toward their Alsace.

Europeans in general and Germans in particular are much more into trains than Americans. Have been forever. Their societies have been organized around them to much greater extent than in the US.

The biggest train show in the world is Innontrans in Berlin every other year. I've done it a few times. The train lines run right into the exhibition area which is full of the latest trains of all types. Pretty impressive.

I spent March of '90 to June of '90 there and will never go return. Flat, boring and shitty weather. Almost died in a flood that forced us into a 44 mile road march. Weather fairy up-ended all the game shows to do blow-by-blow on what size ball the hailstones were going to be, and he seemed like quite the expert on the sizes of balls.

A much better comparison is to Australia despite the differences in population. The countries are about the same size with dense cities and comparatively smaller suburbs and rural areas. And people travel by plane not rail.
