Incredible sport, coming up next on The Ocho. Proud cat. Here you go, little feller. Daddy and baby gorilla. And, a mama gorilla wants to show that she has a baby too. Abandoned WWII bunker in Denmark. Ruined cathedral. Ancient Egyptian temple. Pretty sure I built a few of these in Age of Empires. Took me 1000 gold, 1000 wood, and 1000 stone. Took at least five minutes! What a wonder. What's this?! I bet it would be fun to nap in!!! Call Ian Malcolm. It's chaos or something. Hula pig. Kittens following master. Are you in the mood for... you know... head-butting? Spin cycle. This is old, and I've linked it a few times, but if you missed it: the wonderful sounds of the 80s. I've also linked this, but this desk is great. Whoa -- an eagle caught a shark! Akshually it's an osprey, and it caught a Spanish mackerel, but "eagle catches shark" sounds better. Still impressive.

I haven't really been lurking here lately so I don't know if the kiddos' protests against Pride month and activities has been discussed. There was an incident at a middle school in Massachusetts, and I believe the other one was in Canada of all places. In one, the kids refused to wear rainbow colors and came in to school wearing red white and blue, and chanting that their pronouns were USA
In the other one, a group of students wrote a manifesto regarding their feelings that they were being targeted due to their anti-Pride beliefs and staged a walk-out on the school's big pride fest day. And a second detransitioner has filed a lawsuit against the criminals who butchered her. so anyway good news all around Posted by: kallisto at June 15, 2023 07:57 PM (THluz) 53

My grandparents farm in Southeast Norway on the North Sea still has a large concrete gun emplacement down at the beach. There is a 40 foot long bunker about 150 feet back from the beach and a 30 foot metal barn was built by the occupiers on the property. The British would feint invasion to keep the Krauts occupied and when they did the Germans would kick the family out of the farmhouse to keep troops. There were 11 kids. My Mom found a Luger in that bunker right after the Germans surrendered. She was 12.

The Kriegsmarine pocket battleship Gnesienau is now buried under a car park and building in Kiel Germany. Nearby in a destroyed sub pen is the remains of three U-boats.
Bunkers are still present at Normandie. The alleged time traveling Nazi bell ring structure still exists. As late as 2010 IIRC part of the Autobahn near Berlin was the original one laid down during the Nazis. Europe is still littered with remnants and reminders of World War II. Hill 60 mine from 9 November 1916 to 7 June 1917
The opening of the Battle of Messines was at that time the biggest man-made explosion in history. At Hill 60, at the northern extremity of the line, the 1st Australian Tunnelling Company had been at work since November 1916. They were continuing work begun by British tunnellers months before. They secretly dug two large mineshafts under Hill 60 and The Caterpillar. Right along the British front were 17 other similar mines, all packed with explosives. At 3:10am on 7 June 1917, British forces simultaneously blew up 19 mines as the opening move in the Messines attack. The Hill 60 mine created a crater 60 feet (18m) deep and 260 feet (79m) wide. The German front-line troops were overwhelmed. Posted by: andycanuck (Vwz3I) at June 15, 2023 08:28 PM (Vwz3I) 125

Good evening, gentlefappers.
I just saw an amazing documentary on film preservation, "Film: The Living Record of Our Memory". The most amazing part was learning that digital films are backed up on 35mm film, because for all its vulnerabilities if not stored properly, it is still the most safe and stable medium for film. Digital is constantly being migrated between mediums and from server to server. One preservationist said the newer the recording medium, the faster the information brakes down. re 46 and 47, relocation of Abu Simbel, from Encyclopedia Britannica:
In the mid-20th century, when the reservoir that was created by the construction of the nearby Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge Abu Simbel, UNESCO and the Egyptian government sponsored a project to save the site. An informational and fund-raising campaign was initiated by UNESCO in 1959. Between 1963 and 1968 a workforce and an international team of engineers and scientists, supported by funds from more than 50 countries, dug away the top of the cliff and completely disassembled both temples, reconstructing them on high ground more than 200 feet (60 metres) above their previous site. In all, some 16,000 blocks were moved. In 1979 Abu Simbel, Philae, and other nearby monuments were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. In August 1992 I was a member of the first NASA engineering team to go to the NPO Energiya plant north of Moscow, to begin working with the Russians on the Shuttle-Mir Program. NPO Energiya (now called RSC Energiya) designed and built/builds the Buran vehicles and Soyuz and Progress spacecraft. We were given the grand tour of the facility, including the Buran Electrical Test Article. A complete flight-rated structure with all avionics and cabling installed. We were allowed into the cockpit and the payload bay. We NASA troops and a number of Rockwell Shuttle design engineers with us were astounded. It was different in some details from our Shuttle Orbiters, but we saw remarkable similarities. We all looked closely at some familiar parts to see if they had copied the Rockwell part numbers! If memory serves, Neville "Shute" Norway was part of the almost-comical Q Branch gang during WWII that created the Wel-Gat, the Wel-Bike, and Wel-everything else. Deucedly clever, sometimes too much by half. The head of the shop is credited with creating the powered handicapped scooter, a blessing once that we take as a Wal-Mart joke now. Shute was in Oz to build and test the Brit Bomb. Judging by On Yon Beach, he felt uneasy about it. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at June 15, 2023 10:00 PM (jYCXf) 322

Europe's really pretty big, about the same size as continental US. The big difference is that until recently if you tried to go 800 miles in any direction at all you'd come to several well-armed border stations, through which you would pass only with prior permission.
