No Seriously: Are UFOs Real? Are You Kidding Me?
Michael Shellenberger interviewed the whistleblower.
I was at a right-wing conference. A friend of mine you'd know from another blog, but who I don't want to name in case this is supposed to be confidential, spoke with an Air Force officer for an hour. He later told me the Air Force guy told him that all the UFO stuff was totally real and that yes, they have the spaceships in vaults and yeah, he's seen them. I had no idea how to process this. So I shrugged and just discounted it completely.
In April, the director of the Pentagon's new program for studying UFOs said he had seen no evidence of alien spacecraft. "I should also state clearly for the record," said Sean Kirkpatrick, the Director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), "that in our research, AARO has found no credible evidence thus far of extraterrestrial activity, off-world technology, or objects that defy the known laws of physics." The statement, which was part of a hearing on the topic, generated headlines around the world. "UFO sightings are up," noted Politico, "but no proof of aliens yet, Pentagon official says." Wrote News Nation, "UFO Chief: No 'credible evidence' of extraterrestrial activity." But on Monday, an Air Force whistleblower contradicted the Pentagon's claim, telling The Debrief and News Nation that the U.S. government is in possession of "quite a number" of alien spacecraft. "I thought it was totally nuts," David Grusch said. "I thought at first I was being deceived." But, Grusch said, he soon learned that United States government possessed "quite a number" of different kinds of non-human vehicles. "I have plenty of current and former senior intelligence officers who came to me -- many of whom I knew almost my whole career -- [and] who confided in me." This is not the first time government officials have suggested that the U.S. may possess alien spaceships. "I was told for decades that Lockheed had some of these retrieved materials," said the late Senator Harry Reid, who fought for greater disclosure. "And I tried to get, as I recall, a classified approval by the Pentagon to have me go look at the stuff. They would not approve that." Former deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Intelligence, Christopher Mellon, recently reported that he has spoken to more than four witnesses who say they know of "a secret U.S. government program involving the analysis and exploitation of materials recovered from off-world craft... Some have supplied information to the intelligence community's inspector general, others directly to the staff of the congressional oversight committees." Grusch's claims are shocking, and he has not made public any photographs, video, or written evidence to support them. He says he never saw any of the alleged nonhuman spacecraft himself.
Michael Shellenberger talks about the "ontological shock" of realizing not just that aliens exist -- which a lot of people assume to exist, based on the law of large numbers -- but are actually here and that every nonsense claim you've ever been told about the government covering it all up are 100% true. He also says that he left out some stuff from his article, because he didn't want to "shock" people too much, and couldn't verify the claims. He says these same sources tell him that yes, We Have the Bodies, Too.
And now, multiple sources close to the matter have come forward to tell Public that Grusch's core claims are accurate. The individuals are all either high-ranking intelligence officials, former intelligence officials, or individuals who we could verify were involved in U.S. government UAP efforts for three or more decades each. Two of them have testified, including as recently as last year, to both AARO and Congress. The individuals said they had seen or been presented with "credible" and "verifiable" evidence that the U.S. government, and U.S. military contractors, possess at least 12 or more alien space crafts, some of which they shared with AARO, which AARO has refused to provide to Congress. The reason AARO "has not discovered any verifiable information," they said, is because it does have the authority to verify it and may not want to verify it. ... The sources all expressed anger and frustration at the Pentagon's denial of the existence of nonhuman craft and materials. "The denials coming out of Susan Gough and the Pentagon are specifically chosen to use AARO as the source of information when Grusch has already addressed that AARO didn't have access. And so, of course, they didn't discover anything." ...
The sources said they suspected that the Chinese and Russians had also retrieved craft, but they did not know for certain.

I don't buy it. Even if it's true, I don't think I care because it doesn't affect my life.
But the reason I don't buy it is fairly straightforward, and there are two big reasons for it and a smaller third
1. If true, it is a secret and one that has been successfully kept by the United States Government and hundreds or thousands of its agents for at least 50 years. This defies belief. Any secret that big and that old where that many people know about it is going to crack open.
2. If true, why are we the only place that has these artifacts? Why is America special in terms of extraterrestrial visitors? Why didn't the USSR have UFOs? Red China? Japan? Germany? And if they *do* and are in on the conspiracy, then I cordially redirect you back to point 1.
3. Where are the strategically decisive energy and physics inventions and theories that would result from this?

We have seen life nowhere else. Not in outer space (around where we live and where have gone). Not even a bacterium. There is no evidence for or against the Unique Event Hypothesis, nor is there any evidence for or against the hypotheses that there must be billions of other intelligent races. There is speculation to support either, no evidence either way.
Either way, it's irrelevant. If there is life elsewhere it doesn't matter because the odds of them being *able* to come here, much less knowing that "here" exists, much less *wanting" to come here, might as well be zero, at least as far as we know based on distances, time and energy requirements.

Nearly impossible to believe that it found its way here. The distances are just too daunting.
Impossible to believe that it found its way here and doesn't emit radio waves or do anything much but crash a lot and show up in blurry pictures, even though much of the population carries high-quality cameras everywhere they go, and the skies are highly monitored.
Some people just can't live with uncertainty. It would be amazing if pilots and radar operators never saw anything they could not explain. Leaping to aliens as a way to avoid having to say "I don't know what that is" is just silly.

The whole UFO designation doesn't make a ton of sense if the thing has *crashed* though.
I could probably, with no aerospace experience, poke around a crashed craft for a little bit and get a reasonable sense of which country, or at least which part of the world it came from in a few hours. I'm sure our defense industry experts could figure it out in one minute from 50 yards away.
I don't think it's fair to call it a UFO once it's not flying and it's right in front of you.

In high school I read all of Von Daniken’s books as soon as they showed up on the supermarket’s bookshelves, up to The Gold of the Gods. In all of his books, he collects all of this ambiguous evidence for alien visits. It ranges from those Mayan images that are easily looked at as Kirby-like illustrations, to very round, incredibly smooth spheres.
In Gold of the Gods, however, he produces a rock painting of an astronaut in a space suit. There is no ambiguity. It is an astronaut in a space suit. Von Däniken gives it barely a paragraph, and expresses disappointment that he can’t find it where it was supposed to be in China. Then goes back to his Very Smooth Spheres.
This absolute proof of his theories, he gave no more space than snakes with triangular heads and vague shrouds that could be representations of “a space traveler’s mask”.

If earthling life sprang up spontaneously over billions of years because it evolved to be perfectly suited for life here, it would make sense that there would be life that existed due to the conditions on a blazing hot planet like Mercury or the frozen wastelands of Saturn. No vehicle capable of interstellar travel would be able to touch atmosphere much less land. The idea of flying saucers comes from erroneous extrapolations from military aeronautical progress. Interstellar travel is entirely different.

Yes, and those zillions of telescopes and thousands of astronomers still keep getting surprised by asteroids that, on a galactic scale, miss Earth by a hair's breadth and are big enough to kill most or all of us. Now imagine a similarly-sized, or smaller, object controlled by sentient beings, who can approach Earth at angles not well covered by our observations and can use various stellar phenomena to hide their approach. This is even before we get into the possibility of stealth technology that makes the F-117 look like a sore thumb in comparison. Heck, just paint the ships black and you've already made them incredibly hard to detect.

Hey, we have progressed sufficiently that not only do we have machines that fly through the air, but we fly them millions of times a day with a very high success rate. However, every once in a while, they do fail. Now imagine you're on a plane which crash lands on that island India owns that has the psychotically homicidal tribe. Guess what? Now Stone Age people have artifacts of 21st Century technology, and whether you die in the crash or at their hands, they also have your body. While alien technology by definition would have to be incredibly advanced beyond ours for them to get here, that's no guarantee that it's infallible, and it's likely that the difference in advancement between aliens and modern humans is less than that between modern humans and that Indian tribe. Then, of course, we get into scenarios like them getting sick from our germs or our environment.
