Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Sea Monkeys

Have you ever raised these?

The Guardian published a sort of pet-phobic piece by a person recalling the cause of her phobia, but the piece has now gone behind a paywall: The pet I'll never forget: Sea monkey orgies

So I guess we'll have to make do with a Newsweek story that is somewhat more positive about Sea Monkeys. There is audio at the link.

Sea monkeys are sold as novelty pets for children and have become something of a cult favorite.

The "monkeys" are an artificial breed of brine shrimp, a type of aquatic crustacean.

An artificial breed?

Brine shrimp in the wild live throughout the world and are only found in salty, inland waters isolated from the ocean. They are found reliably in the Great Salt Lake in Utah and Mono Lake in California, but they appear in salt ponds across the globe.

My family used to hatch regular Great Salt Lake brine shrimp to feed to tropical fish. They're smaller than "Sea Monkeys". I remember them as much smaller and less distinct in shape. Tropical fish will fight over them.

Sea monkeys became popular because of their small size and were marketed as the perfect pet for people unable to keep a dog or other larger pets.

Fully grown brine shrimp only grow up to half an inch long. Some sea monkey customers claim theirs have grown up to an inch, but this is incredibly rare. Once fully grown, they also develop a tail that remotely resembles those of monkeys, hence their marketed name.

Parsons said that despite their tiny size, their biology is fascinating.

"The most interesting aspect of brine shrimp biology, to me at least, is the fact that they are superb osmoregulators. What that means is they have to have fresh water and they live in a salty, sometimes extremely salty, environment," he said. "They drink salt water, retain the freshwater, and excrete the salt. They can live in saltwater that is 10 times saltier than seawater." . . .

I guess the writer for the Guardian noticed another aspect of this creature's biology and was forever repulsed.

A lot of other people were mostly disappointed, I think.

Meet The PetMorons

Well, the mailbox was empty this week, so it's back to a relatives' farm:

The house chicken had to go back outside. Fitting a diaper became too cumbersome.

Hen's eggs with first quail eggs of the season, and more quail eggs.

Little Rupert, the runt of the piggy litter, didn't make it. Everyone loved him, and was heartbroken. The rest of the piggies can be seen lined up in a row.

3 There's usually a reason the runt didn't develop. I miss having pigs. They are almost as entertaining as goats.

I will try and get a picture of the stray. He's decided he likes the food and pets. Still don't know if he could become an indoor cat when it turns cold. Jake's gotten used to him but Trouble is wary with dogs. And there's the issue of whether he belongs to someone else.

12 nova dog--

Have you considered fostering a rescue dog? It might be a way to get a dog into your life without making a long-term commitment. Our local rescue is always looking for fosters.

Of course that's what we thought until our foster had been here for 24 hours. She's still here almost 2 years later. A classic "foster fail."

20 Afternoon, folk! Dagny the little Siberian kitten (who along with big Stirling is accomplished at all four of the Olympic events above) is due for her alterations this Friday. I hope to snap some pics of her in the infamous cone and send them in, if not for this upcoming Saturday, but the next.

In the meantime, she is trotting around, chirring and calling; hopping up on the bathroom counter and knocking my safety razors around; and once on the flat surface, sitting on her belly and twitching her tail. It's been a long time since I had an intact female cat. I thought the heat business only came on about once a month and lasted a week? This spell has lasted that long, after a quiet week and then another heat session before that.

The calling, I think, disturbs Stirling, whose own tomcat days are not that far behind him.

What a miserable week. The babies were born April 30 ao we figured by now they had all made it. No. First one just tipped over and died then another. So we have only one black baby left and only one female (originally 4 males 3 females).
To add to the misery we lost Piper, an older cat we've had a few years. He arrived already fixed, so he had to have been someone's cat. Very shy, he hid for almost a year (I think) then adopted my younger daughter and practically lived on her lap. He could never jump and x-rays showed a fractured hip. I think he may have been abused either at his home or on his wanderings. He had diabetes and heart problems, the latter probably derived from the former. We found all this out this week. I had suspected diabetes when he started to hang around the water bowl and we were going to take him to the vet anyway, just not right then (having a lot of cats we can't be running to the vet for every suspicion).

45 Miss Lily the 24-pound 3-year-old tricolor corgi just had her nails clipped and ground, but got to use the claws this morning.

We get chipmunks in the house here in this 90-year-old place, and have a Hav-a-heart trap I bait with peanut butter.

Caught one after breakfast, Miss Lily all excited, took her out in the yard to free the rodent, in the middle so the chippie couldn't make it to cover, and she caught it, did a whole lot of front paw pouncing, threw it up in the air a few flips, and the beast crawled to a safe space under something, half dead.

Most dogs, particularly terriers, would just gulp one down, but Miss Lily the herder, just wants to play.

Little Dagny the Siberian was pretty small when I adopted her. There's always competition among the cats in a cattery, including among the members of the same litter, for food, play, and attention. She's developed very well and is healthy and energetic now -- though I know she'll probably never be a big cat. Siberians, we're told, grow slowly and don't finish filling out sometimes until they're five.

The grubs travel a ways away from where they feed. If you have millers (pantry moths) or the fur/feather ones they are eating the underside of something and crawling away to pupate. First find what they are feeding on. I found that some came in on feathers I had gotten from a turkey farmer, and they got into some woolens, and were eating part of one of my felt hats. I got rid of the stuff they had eaten and sprayed the rest with Rid, which is lice and bedbug spray with permethrin.

PERMTHRIN IS TOXIC TO CATS. I am told that when it dries it is not bad for them but I suggest you look that up yourself. Cats can't expel it like humans and dogs

If it is pantry moths you will have to clear the area with food and check and recheck and probably freeze your food

Posted by: Kindltot at June 17, 2023 05:44 PM (xhaym)

68 And by freeze your food I mean put your flour and cat food in the freezer for a week to kill the grubs and eggs.

I found some grubs and webs in a jar of dried peppers and I had no idea how they got in, I suspect it was open on the counter long enough for the moths to lay eggs.

Posted by: Kindltot at June 17, 2023 06:00 PM (xhaym)

69 Aw, love your pet column. I would get another kitty or do, but in so many places, we do not control the population of predators, like coyotes, or alligators.
