Ace of Spades Pet Thread, June 10

cat dog spin the bottl.jpg

* * *

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

A devoted mama:

* * *

Have you ever heard this? Do you think it's true?

* * *

Really Short Story Time

Do you ever find that it is easier to notice the people around you if you are in the company of a dog?

* * *

Big idea of the day:

Are cats really domesticated?

Few people would mistake a wolf for a dog. But if you saw the ancestor of the domestic cat in your backyard, your first thought would likely be "What a cool-looking housecat!" rather than "What's an African wildcat doing in Manchester?" That's how little they've changed, earning them the tag "barely" or "semi-domesticated". There have been some minor anatomical shifts - domestic cats have longer intestines and smaller brains, for example - but very few genetic ones (and certainly many fewer than separate dogs from their wild ancestors). What about behaviour, then? Which of the traits we commonly associate with our furry friends are the result of domestication, and which do they share with their wild relatives?

What do you think?

I am going through some old pictures, and it reminded me of other pictures which I dug out and scanned.

The first one is a picture of me in 1970 with my cat Joe as a just-arrived kitten (Joe turned into a giant tabby),

and the second is what I suspect is my grandfather's picture of a cat on the family farm, probably his. This would have been prior to WWI but I am guessing here. It is tucked into a picture album of whom the youngest people were my Grandfather's generation.

Kindltot

What great kitty family history! And a cute childhood photo of you with your friend Joe.

From Jewells:

This is Audrey. We got her from a shelter in Ft. Scott, Kansas. She's some kind of beagle mix. Not sure if she was a stray but if she was she must have been VERY well fed before she bolted from home. She is very overweight but a real cuddle bug.

Awwww, Audrey!

Great to see you back, Jewells!

My daughter's German Shorthair Pointer, Mel. Quite possible the best dog I've ever met. I tease my kid that she named it for Melania Trump.

Cheers!

Yawrate

How wonderful it is to find a great dog!

Hey KT,

Not sure whether this should go in the garden thread or the pet thread. This is my friend Mr. Toad. About a week ago he started showing up in my front garden. It is shaded from afternoon sun and has some trees and established bushes which give him a lot of shade even in the morning. He likes to hang out underneath the sprinkler on the end of the hose, I think it drips water on him from time to time. He has scared the crap out of me a number of times, as I go to grab the hose and he is RIGHT there. But for the most part he just hangs out and hopefully eats some bugs for me.

For everyone who is worried about the dogs getting Mr. Toad, there are no worries there. The dogs never go in the front garden so they are safe from his toxic slime.

WeeKreekFarmGirl

I think there are some toads in Arizona that are more toxic than the ones around here that like to hope around with the garden kitties and swim in one of their water bowls. The dogs don't seem too interested.

That toad is impressive!

Yesterday, Daisy the over-enthusiastic Malinois just had to get out and run. I opened the front door, and she bolted past me and ran off into the yard, full-tilt. She's learned pretty well to stay in our area, so I wasn't concerned—as long as there's not a moving vehicle or lawnmower to chase. She went east, roared around in a big circle, ran past me heading west, and that's when she saw...

A deer! Her speed doubled, and deer and dog disappeared into the brush in the north-east corner. Nothing for me to do but wait.

She returned in just a minute, uninjured and unbloodied. Good enough, dog!

A little while ago, Daisy came in and saw little Ony kitty eating out of Daisy's bowl. I think it took Daisy a few seconds, staring, to grasp what she was seeing, because the cat just kept eating with the dog right there. They're getting along much better.

7 Last summer I had a lot of small cells of vegetable plants on my back porch. One afternoon I was watering them, and out of each cell popped a toad. Frog, whatever. They hide under the moist potting soil. Miraculously most of the seeds sprouted.

Thanks KT. Haven't had much action at Shep's lately as far as new dogs. Roscoe and Lily continue to chew the rugs and make a mess. Charlie seems to be moving better since we changed his meds. 27 Cats come in all kinds of personalities. Take the ferals. Some flee at the sight of humans. Some will eventually approach you if they see you regularly and you, particularly if you have food. And then there are the kind that come right up to you and really do enjoy participating in affection. My first cat, Toonses, was a big, street tabby who eventually made me his bestie. He loved being around people - very interactive and quite talkative. Before he moved in with me, I had to take him to the vet for surgery due to an abscess he developed. When I picked him up, the staff told me that once he woke up, he was chatty catty. He loved going to the vet because it meant new people to talk to. (Well, he hated the ride but he loved being there.) Some cats are miserable creatures, but in general, I'm a cat guy.

The 2 cats totally ignore his plight and greedily eat all the kibbles on the floor even the ones that fall under his arms.
The same guy does the same stunt with a dog, looks like a lab type. Spills the dog kibbles, lays there like dead.
The dog totally ignores the kibbles and immediately starts barking and pawing the man to see if he is OK.

36 Earlier today we ran into an acquaintance walking his three year old labradoodle. This is a good size dog and maybe the biggest cuddle bug this side of a Newfy. I have the honor to be a special friend since he knows he can lean against me for scritches without knocking me over. Mrs. JTB and our friend chatted for a while but the 'good boy' just gloried in the pats and rubs. If there hadn't been some errands to run I would probably still be there, giving him his due.

What a nice way to spend part of my day.

WeeKreekFarmGirl

My blessed lab, Leroy, a 120 lb behemoth of the softest yellow fur you ever sunk your hand in, loved to lick toads. He would foam up at the mouth a bit, a giant grin plastered across his furry face, eyes half shut in doggy drug bliss. I asked the vet about it, and whether I should try to stop it. His response was, "He's a lab. Good luck."

Leroy loved and protected us every day of his 11 years. He liked two pillows placed at right angles by my side of the bed so he could be comfy. That is, when he wasn't on the bed, in between Mr. Moki and myself. His toots could clear a room, and he would bring you his bowl, not for food, but to show off his most treasured possession. I miss him.

Afternoon, all,

Then I'll have to scan one of my mother ca. 1950 with her black cat Sparky. Sparky apparently was cool to travel; there's a pic of my mother on the Miss. River levee somewhere in town, holding him. She didn't live right by the river at that time, so I'd like to know how, without a car and in a day before ready-made carriers, she got him there.

Her upstairs neighbor or landlord was a photographer. In return, she said, for Sparky tripping upstairs and hunting down mice, he did a studio portrait of the cat. That portrait rested on a shelf in our living room all during my childhood.

48 Some years ago we took a house down and had to have some heavy clay fill brought to legally close the cellar hole. They wuz toads in that dirt. They moved into my garden and I came to respect them quite a lot, even leaving a mud hole so they'd have something to repair to in the dry times. Never saw an insect of any kind during the couple of years they stayed around. I hope they found happier hunting grounds and did not fall to some predator.

Also hidden in the same truckload was one (1) mole. We had a long mole war. It would have been amusing except that it took so long to repair the damage.

She was sure the world was created to provide comfortable cushions and give her tummy rubs and we didn't contradict that faith. She owned us for sixteen years and is still a sweet memory after half a century.

Cats are more situationally aware as potential prey of predators and they study their homes intensely, so I don't think they are fooled by stunts. When I broke an arm and had surgery, my female cat changed her sleep habits to stay every moment on the hip where the break was and remained there until the doctor declared the break healed. Then she went back to her normal behavior of sleeping by the feet or on top of me or elsewhere.

Bone healed up well according to the doctor, too.

58 By the way: Tomorrow is the first anniversary of my adopting Stirling the great black kitten!

After the passing of Chekov the elderly Siberian in March, I wasn't ready for a new cat. In late May on Petfinder I spotted the last member of the litter the Vicksburg animal shelter called "Bubbles." (It turned out later that it was not a pic of the kitten I later called Stirling, but one of his sisters.) They didn't require reams of paperwork and were not stupid about face diapers. So I drove four hours up to see him. He was good-looking and friendly, purred immediately, and walked right into the carrier we brought.

He was once known as The Evil Black Kitten of War and Pestilence. Now, altered and at age 15 months, he has settled down to life playing with his "sister" Dagny. We each make the other happy, I think.

Once many years ago I had the patio door of the apartment open (there was a big greenspace there out to the lot of an assisted living building) and the cats would sit there and do a little wandering and I noticed my cat Cassie with her head and shoulders jammed under the small sofa. I pulled her out, and she ran back in. I told her "there's nothing there!" and lifted it up to show her and there was a toad under there she apparently had brought in and dropped. She instantly went into the space under, as did the other cat and now I had this furniture up in the air that I couldn't let down without squishing the cats.

Eventually I saved cats and toad alike and got it sorted out

My boyhood cat, Rusty (really my mother's cat, but he liked us all), would leave his dead mice on Mom's dining table chair. Didn't bother her, she'd grown up on a farm. But even then I thought it cool that he always left his kills on *her* chair, as if showing off.

66 I can't find it for the life of me, but there was a twitter video of a guy with a bowl of cat kibbles to feed 2 hungry cats. He (fake) stumbles, falls to the floor, spilling the kibbles. Lays there like he's dead.
Ace may have put it on a cafe thread.

A favorite spot of our cats to leave things was my mom's closed bedroom door in the hallway, or right by the front door. They definitely are showing off, making sure they get credit for helping out.

With my cats as an adult when I try saving a cat or lizard from the capturing cat giving them verbal credit for a capture means they are willing to yield it to you without a fight.

68 Arizona the late Maine Coon lookalike loved to hunt and kill roaches, the big ones. He'd torture it, let it stagger a little distance, then bat it with a paw. Eventually, crunch crunch crunch. I was damn glad he didn't leave any part of them for me.

The first time I saw him with one, I was worried. I'd always heard they gave cats worms. When I went to take it from him, Arizona growled *at me.* I said, "Okay, cat, go ahead, get sick." He lived to be 16.5 years old, so apparently those were not bad for him.

Growing up our tabby Tigger loved those large grasshoppers with the big wings. We boys would even catch them for him so he could crunch them up. He had such a racket going.

Howdy, neighbor! It sure is summer, our 2 weeks of dry air is over and we are back to jungle levels of humidity. We spent most of the day in the pool, which is already 86 degrees, until this thunder started getting closer.

73 Before, we started feeding the parking lot strays (originally 6 but one black cat disappeared early on) we had been feeding a stray that roamed our yard, Mr Gray. He still comes and he's brought a friend, female we think, so we feed 1 or 2 outside cats. Need to get that female to the vet for the snip. Can't afford more kittens. My house is just cats .....!

75 On the cats being unchanged by breeding:

I remember a 19th century cat breeder complaining that cats are difficult subjects because the queens had their own minds and would often reject the toms they were supposed to mate with. There must also be some biological reason that breeders find it hard to change the overall shape and size much, vs dogs who go from almost bear sized to toy sized. Many of the big morphology changes (tailless, no fur, short legs) are mutations that weren't created gradually, and most of those are fatal if the gene is inherited from mom and dad.

I remember a comment somewhere that a pet owner had her cat bring in a chicken nugget, still warm from somewhere.

77 I've always read that dogs have more "plastic" genes than do cats. Not sure if that's right, or what it really means.

It looked like Daphne was getting rain when I looked North but none here, nor really any guaranteed in the forecast for the next week. I had to water the lawn today.
