Ace of Spades Pet Thread, June 3

cat goes to vet.jpg

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

We promised some chicken content today. Well, here are some eggs. They look nicer than most eggs, I think.

egg spectrum.jpg

* * *

Keeping hens in the back yard used to be encouraged. Have you ever kept chickens? Got tips for the rest of us?

Here's a rooster after his shower. He went back outdoors.

chickenaftershower.jpg

* * *

Here is a kitty that's afraid of chickens. Something to keep in mind.

Sometimes there are reasons to be afraid of chickens. Ever had a run-in with a rooster? I have.

With a hen?

* * *

These are not chickens.

Meet The PetMorons

bosco c.jpg

This last Thursday, the spousal unit and I said goodbye to Bosco (The Chocolate Rocket),aged 16years (approx.) who we have shared before on this page. He crossed over the Rainbow Bridge a little after 5PM CST with my wife and I at his side to the end. He was a very good boy although his breath was from the pits of hell.

My wife was a licensed childcare provider for the entire time that Bosco was with us (except the last year, we retired and moved out of California) and was universally loved by all of the children who were under our care. Bosco would go from child to child's lap to see who would give him the most love, the younger the child the better. The little children would sometimes put their hands in Bosco's mouth, at such time Bosco would growl and snarl as if he was ripping the kids arm off while as the same tome chewing on the kids hand like it was a toy (at the same time the kid would be giggling and laughing). Yes, we closely watched to insure that no one was injured. Bosco just didn't like big kids or adults. The loss of Bosco hurt us more than the loss of Sugar, our first Beagle some 6 years ago.

Eric (the OC Tanker)

So sorry for the loss of you great friend, Bosco. Sounds like he was full of personality.

Texas Ratsnake.jpg

This is the Texas Rat Snake
I found in the trellis next to my back door. I don't mind him, if he'll (or she'll)
live up to their name and do their job, I'm glad to have them around!

Snake looks like an explorer. Looks like you have a new PetMoron.

31 My poor sister kitteh had some type of incident while we were outside a few days ago. Don’t know if she was bit or stung by some creature. She ran back into the house and ran around like her tail was on fire . When she stopped she would soon start up again like something was still attacking her. I was able to corral her and she seemed comforted by my protection. She has gotten better each day but she’s still clingy and hesitant to go back outside.

37 As for chickens, they don't require a lot. I usually had a yard with some cover when there were hawks around. A good rooster will alert the hens and get them under cover, if it sees a hawk. Keep the shelter on the smaller side and their body heat will keep them warm. Chickens with the larger combs can get frostbite in cold climates. They do tend to draw rats. Those really dark brown eggs are from Marans and I've raised those. Buff Orpingtons and Australorps are my favorites. Good all purpose birds and will sit a nest. Jersey Giants are interesting too.

42 This didn't require power tools. Same Indonesian wood my bookcases are out of. They use hex bolts to connect. It was well marked and even a little extra hardware. The futon cover is removeable. Most cats are! I can recall my tuxedo girl cat Oreo, who though a lovely creature who looked as if she'd been painted, always seemed a little diffident, as if she wasn't certain people would like her. "Is it . . . okay if I sit in your lap now?" But most cats are more like "Of course cats are the pinnacle of Creation, and I personally am the pinnacle of Cat Creation. But I like you anyway."

55 Great black kitten Stirling just napped with me and kneaded my arm when I woke up. A year with me next Sunday, and he still does that nearly every day. And Dagny La Petit Siberienne is in heat again. While she is noisier than usual, chirping and calling faintly, she is more affectionate to me. I tell her, "I'm the right sex, little cat, but the wrong species. Too bad."

59 The stray gray cat, aka Alfred the Gray, still shows up from time to time for a meal. He is friendly; he's thin, but does not seem emaciated or really unhealthy. I'm worried he'll get run over in the complex or that a coyote might find him. I keep trying to convince Linda to take him in. She says he's noisy. Me: "If you were hot or cold, lonely, and hungry most of the time, wouldn't you be noisy?"

Clearly he was a pet some lowlife turned loose, like my late Wolf. Wolf was lucky that I had only one other cat at the time. Now I have two, so no go.

60 My new rescue dog is doing fabulous. She went to training for a month and she is doing great. I can take her outside without a leash and she comes back.

She's about two and just the sweetest thing. The only thing we need to keep working on she has a fit if anyone gets too close to me. Resource guarding.

I think she is a mini schnauzer/terrier mix. She's quite the little hunter and she's killed one huge squirrel.
I need to send the before and after pics after her haircut.

67 Wormhole: ISTR seeing a cockamamie animal psychology study years ago that claimed dogs did not realize that when they rode in a car, they ended up someplace else. Anyone recall seeing this touted?

Like watching TV, there must be a broad 'range of experience' in dog travel, but this does not apply to any dog I have been in the car with. We had a yellow lab who could drive the John Deere.

This

We've been blessed with fresh eggs from the neighbors for over a year now. On the few occasions when we've bought store eggs, even the "so called free range" brown ones they lack the fresh, mild egg flavor. Plus, they cook so freaking fast and are huge. Eggs shells tend to either really thin or really thick, depending on the color.

Growing up we had Aracauna chickens that gave us pink, blue, green and light beige/almost yellow eggs. We also had four chickens that had been part of my senior high school experiment involving hormones. They were giant, mean, growled and laid eggs with four yolks. 85 We've kept chickens, off and on - the first trio were Barred Rocks; they are that pretty black and white breed, with dark red combs. One turned out to be a rooster, which was super-annoying, and he wasn't all that great as "Protector of the Flock". We added a pair of banty Wyandotes, gotten from another neighbor. The banty eggs were tiny, perfect for using in recipes where you needed to cut in half a quantity of three eggs. The Barred Rock hens and roosters died of old age, the Wyantotes were carried away by hawks. Second round - a quartet of production Reds. Three of them got mauled by a raccoon, and the fourth just died. We are going to go with another round of four, this year. For a family of two adults, four chickens produce enough eggs for a household and to give away to neighbors.
