Ace of Spades Pet Thread, May 27

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

History

Today, in the Gardening Thread, we saw a few photos from a road trip Rodent took with his wife. Here's another one that's pet-related, featuring some really brave dogs:

Savannah GA Museum Paint.jpg

This photo from 1902 shows French knife grinders. They would work on their stomachs in order to save their backs from being hunched all day.
They were also encouraged to bring their dogs to work to keep them company and also act as mini heaters by having them rest on their owners' legs.
They were also called ventres jaunes ("yellow bellies" in English) because of the yellow dust that would be released from the grinding wheel.

Meet The PetMorons

Molly1 2.jpeg

From M E:

Attached is Black Dog Three (Molly) needing a brush. She had been rolling around the back yard in the dried up weeds and grass and came into the house to show off her hard work.

You can have clean floors or you can have dogs, you can not have both at the same time.

Molly, Molly, Molly!

The clean floor proverb holds true.

From just Christopher:

A picture of Daughter #2's puppies. I guess that make them my "grand doggers." The one on the right is Scully Pants, about 5 years old, 60 lbs, and previously made almost world famous in Ace's Pet Thread. The one on the left is Benjamin Franklin, about 4 years old, 98 lbs last vet visit. Benjamin Franklin is an American Bulldog ( and I think perfectly named - you wouldn't name him Winston or Vladimir would you ? ). When he first came, Scully Pants and Benjamin Franklin took one look at each other and instantly bonded. They are the bestest buddies, inseparable. They are staking out THEIR spot on THEIR couch, although they will let you have a small spot between them.

Benjamin had a sad puppyhood, he came from a house that kept him in a 4 x 6 cage and they only let him out periodically. His ribs showed and he limped when he tried to run. When he came to Daughter #2's house he was really rather overwhelmed, it took him awhile to realize he had been adopted by someone who would love and care for him. It was about 3 months before I saw him wag his tail for the first time. Now he is healthy and prances around and wags his tail with the best of them. And of course Scully Pants still has his 400 mph tail. For such a big dog Benjamin is the sweetest guy. He loves to nuzzle and if you sit in your tiny spot on the couch he sometimes tries to get on your lap so you can scratch his ears.

Those two dogs look like great friends!

Again, our official Ace of Spades Swiss Guide Dog takes us on a little adventure, this time to a Community Barbecue, where her sister gave a talk. It might be nice to have a Community Barbecue with puppies invited, here in the USA, too. Would your dog like this?

12 My poor mother is giving up her dog next weekend as she prepares to go to assisted living. LittleBrother928 is taking the large GSD to foster, but he lives in Hawaii so Mom will never see her dog again.

The animal senses that something is up. She sleeps in a large crate in the foyer, and takes herself to bed every night, but last night she refused to go in the kennel and insisted on sleeping on the floor in my parent's bedroom.

It is all pretty sad.

13 I'll see if I can take a picture of the stray cat. He actually seems to want to hang out with me now. Difficult to do, unless Jake is in the house. I am going to set up a protected area on the back porch and put in a cat shelter for him.

20 We saw them weighing penguins at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, AK They weight them right in the enormous enclosure where all of the sea birds are. One of the penguins had it totally figured out: you jump on the scale, they give you fish!! He raced over and jumped up to be weighed ahead of all of the other birds. They eventually got all of them weighed, but the clever ones made sure they were at the head of the line.

Big fun!

33 Pax the cat is recovering from her injury. It was a cat bite because Pax is a murder kitty. If it is in her AO and doesn't belong there, it must die. So she scuffles with the strays that wander by occasionally and we get a trip to the vet. Antibiotics were given and the big abscess burst and the icky began. Trying to keep her inside until the hole heals is an exercise in futility.

37 Saw some rather funny video captured by one of our security cameras night before last; a stray cat who's been around our place showed up while ours were outside. Must have been around 1AM. He's sniffing around the outside shelters (huts) we have for the cats when one of ours comes flying into the frame from altitude and lands on the stray's back. He takes off yowling with ours in hot pursuit.

Moments after that another one of our cats pokes her head out of one of the huts and just looks around with a "WTF just happened" expression.

Both the wife and I LOL'd at that.

BTW all our cats are fine.

44 Afternoon, all,

This morning Miss Linda and I were walking in the neighborhood where my mother once lived before I was born. Suffice it to say the block where she lived and those nearest it have declined in 70+ years. But on the other side of the big avenue the first few blocks were great, with pretty houses and yards . . . and in one yard, a black cat. Short-haired, he had a tail that had suffered some kind of trauma and was now a stub, and his left ear showed the clip that means he or she was a stray, was rounded up and neutered, then released back. He did not seem like a feral; though he was not frightened, he moved away from the sidewalk where we were and settled down to inspect us from a safe distance.

I expect his name was "Lucky"!

Lin-duh, take up your binoculars and study the near horizon. If you see a guard shack with a gate arm? That's Cat Lady Territory. The Crazy Cat Person Marches are just beyond that.

My late shaggy black cat Wolf was like that. His "people" would let him out to roam, though they apparently fed him, and he was friendly when I saw him. Then they got evicted. Did they bring him along? Did they go around and ask if someone could take him? No. They left him behind -- turned him loose to cadge meals from kind people and to risk being killed by car or even coyote.

I took him in, and while he was friendly from the start, it took him a few months to start sitting on my lap. After that he was my buddy for the remaining ten years of his life.

52 Yaaaay Pet Thread

Daisy the overly affectionate Malinois just whined slightly, to make sure I knew it was Pet Thread time. Part doorbell, part alarm clock, and as of yesterday part cat, as a poor small mouse discovered.

Had a scary scene this past week.

I've mentioned before how young Daisy Dog and old Ony Cat relate. Ony will be minding her own business, sitting in her favorite chair, and Daisy will spot her like she's never seen a cat before, and starts doing the whining, jumping play-bowing thing. A few times Daisy's managed to get little Ony to chase that big dog, which is pretty funny. Neither Ony's claws nor Daisy's jaws are ever really engaged, just hissing and chasing.

Not so funny this week when suddenly they were really going at it, a snarling, hissing, swirling, blurry ball of critter like you see in a comic fight. Managed to drag Daisy away and into her cage. Looked and sounded bad, but upon inspection, other than a few loose tufts of Ony's black fur, they both seem okay.

I think Daisy is aware that was Bad. They seem to be tolerating each other since. I hope this was a lesson for both of them.

55 Mindful, Stirling managed to pull a tiny tuft of fur from Dagny after one of their play fights yesterday. He had something pale in his mouth, and when I wiped his chin, there it was. Maybe they just got carried away. I didn't har any growling or hissing, or any whine indicating she was in distress.

Though they are almost the same age, he outweighs her by quite a bit. I'm always concerned he *might* hurt her without meaning to. Of course she has claws and teeth and is not a delicate flower, so he could sustain a little damage too.

56 OT: I'm not thrilled with my "smart" TV. The interface has changed. I used to be able to see what channel I was on by pressing "Info." Now it only tells me I'm on "antenna." I don't know if there's a channel display I have to activate or what. The channel up/down works as before, but I have no idea what channel I've moved to. Annoying.

57 Not true. Anyone can keep up with an old golden. There is the cutest beagle cross at the vets in need of a home. But I think it would break Jake's heart to have competition. He's jealous enough of the cat.
