Meet The PetMorons

mac tn springer.jpg

I am a longtime lurker, and my favorite on your site is the Pet Thread. Macintosh, our next door neighbors' Springer Spaniel, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 7 last week. Mac never liked being boarded, so we were his foster parents whenever his family went on vacation. Needless to say, you don't need to be a dog owner to love one. Here is funny, silly Mac - we miss him dearly.

Jan from CT

So sorry about the loss of your dear friend. Sweet photo.

You've shared pictures of Dini (the Tabby) and Smudge (Maine Coon) before. Dini is four years old, Smudge is just over one year old. They both love to torment each other which provides endless entertainment for house OCiS. The first picture below has Dini stairing into the tube with Smudge thinking she's invisible. Picture #2 is about 5 seconds later after a brief tussle leading to this stand-off inside the tube. Picture #3 is when things are a little more calm where the girls are enjoying some sun (Dini on top of the stool, Smudge hanging out underneath). Been thinking about adopting a dog/puppy. Miss having one ride in the truck with me, taking walks, not to mention the companionship that only a dog can provide. But these two also get a vote on the decision to bring one home, and I'm not sure how they'll vote.

Our Country is Screwed.

Well, what does The Horde think? Do these cats need a puppy?

No blood!

When our garden kitties catch mice or gophers, it seems like there isn't usually much blood involved, either. Even if they eat everything but the head and entrails.

15 It looks like Jake's eye is okay. Last Saturday, I took him out back on the lead. I didn't notice that stray cat I feed was hiding under the garden cart. Jake went to check it out and got hooked in the eye. I'd gotten some eye ointment at the previous vet visit, so started treating it with that. Took him to the vets Monday. She said to keep treating it and had him wear the cone of shame for a bit. Friday, he was finally opening that eye all the way up. He is very happy the cone is gone.

16 My girls (above - Dini and Smudge) haven't been exposed to live rodents. They are both strictly indoor cats. I may have brought in a dead mouse or two while it was still in the trap to see what Dini would do.

Saw a mouse running around in my shed so I set fresh traps. Any kind of luck Smudge will get to see her first mouse.

18 New Pet Thread! Yaay. Nice post, K.T., fun pix & vids. Good Horde critters. (Of course.)

Daisy the overly-affectionate Malinois joined our home Mar 6, 2022. It's been quite a year. I made a short (47-sec) anniversary video of her running and playing fetch, but I had problems getting a good copy uploaded. Finally on my YooToob account.

https://youtu.be/QkIrsIgFBSM

Daisy plays chase until she's exhausted, but she knows her limits. At some point, instead of her dropping the ball, she'll just not. "Ready to go in?" She heads for the door. Great game.

19 About the mama kitty bringing her kittens to her benefactor's door: One year a mama kitty had kittens on our front porch. We brought her in with them. They had their own bedroom. They became our kitties.

A little later, another mama kitty, who may have been her sister, brought kittens to our side yard. They were older. We learned that they were born on our neighbor's patio. They never became as human-friendly as the first set. The most friendly one is our Panda Boy, who allows us to pet him, but is feisty, bites and climbs your leg. Mom and a sister took off regularly, had mishaps and have disappeared.

24 Well fed house cats often toy with a mouse. I suspect after a certain # of pouncing and releasing the mouse succumbs to internal injuries. I've never tried an amateur necropsy. I wouldn't know what I was seeing anyway. Last time I 'dissected' anything was in HS biology. Lets just say that was 29 years ago.

1. As you know, the dog park is the fashion capital of the world. A girl had jeans with holes cut in them so you could see the tattoos on her legs.

2. There's a guy there who is more 29 than me. He uses his phone to photograph the owners with their dogs identifying them by name.

I'd put all five up against those in east coast urban areas.

Not really. Remember, they do not want me to sing. At all. Not even Happy Birthday.

But 4 years ago this student wanted a book on Japanese anime. Anna Puma and others helped me get a good one for him. I think that ment a lot to this specific student.

On topic, I have had mating turkey vultures on my deck railing, but my wife would not photograph them. There was a couple hanging around, then a bigger turkey vulture landed, and mated with the female. The David French vulture edged closer, but confrontation was stopped when the larger bird spread his wings.

I do have a picture of one turkey vulture on the railing, wings spread, but I've already sent in pictures from last year frolics.

49 My favorite! The pet thread! My kitties only hunt bugs that make it inside and haven’t succumbed to the pest control program yet. They don’t go outside at all, but I am sure if the opportunity presented itself to hunt something, they would. Kovu used to torment our parakeets when they were still alive, and my Nyah girl did an amazing arch through the air capturing one that escaped the cage. I removed it from her mouth before a murder could occur. Sabi wasn’t around during the parakeet owing stage, but I am sure he would have been just as interested.

52 Odd story. Have always had dogs. When I was a kid,n had a doggie door to the back yard. One year the people across the street moved and left their pregnant cat at the house. We woke up one morning and the cat was parked under the free standing fireplace ready to have kittens. She was not a happy camper. Mom called the SPCA to come and get it. Wore huge long leather gloves. Haven't cared for cats much since. Not her fault.

LOL. I would trust your lack of singing ability doesn't indicate your lack of stellar-iness. Is that a word? . If FenSpouse was singing they'd tell him to stop too, although one six year old has been telling him for about six months that they need to sing happy birthday to her before the break and her birthday is in July, but I think that has more to do with the kids singing.

54 OK, this starts out about a human but ends up about a dog. My sister, who's only slightly less 29 than me, and some friends decided to go on a walking tour completely across Britain near Hadrian's Wall. The tour providers sent information and recommendations on how to prepare and assured them they would be hiking on good trails. Turns out, the Brit definition of "good trails" is somewhat different than ours. The trail included crossing Scaffell Pike, the highest mountain in England (at a whopping 3209 feet). A portion of the good trail included crawling on hands an knees on a lengthy narrow passage with cliff face on one side and deep drop off on the other. Then it ends with you having to scale a 30' rock face. The guides tell you to put your left foot in this crevice and your right hand grips this knob etc. My sister, and everybody else, made it unscathed but exhausted. So exhausted she then fell on a gentle slope and broke her leg. She arrived back in the US on Thursday but is laid up. (Continued)

55 That reminds me. When I was growing up, our housecat, Punkin' Puss, was a killer. We didn't need to feed her, as she hunted in the open desert in NM. Once, we discovered 12 kangaroo rats scattered along one side of our house: she had crippled each one and stashed them, for feeding whenever she needed. The only foe who bested her was a nest of shrikes.

Posted by: goatexchange at May 20, 2023 04:40 PM (+OqUC)

56 My little black tom mostly hunts birds and rats, he doesn't play with the rats, he just kills them.
My toothless Tortie does like to hunt mice, and unfortunately lets them loose in the house. One got into the pantry and chewed up a lot of packaged food. I saw her in the back yard one year "playing" with a mouse until it got so fed up, the mouse started chasing her.

Posted by: Kindltot at May 20, 2023 04:42 PM (xhaym)

57 OK, now the dog part. The Guardian has this story about a dog on Scaffell Pike today.

58 Howdy, all! Pet Thread!

The big black "interrogator" looks much like my late Wolf, and a lot like big black Stirling.

Linda talked me into getting a crinkle tube for the cats for Christmas. Dagny the little Siberian loves it. Stirling, who is not as confident a cat as he once was, is not sure about it. It's time to bring it out again soon and see how they react.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 20, 2023 04:49 PM (omVj0)

59 My two monsters have not seen mice yet that I know of. Lizards and bugs, though, yes, they turn instantly from cuddly pets to lightning-quick slaughter machines. Miss Linda was astonished at how they changed -- but she managed to hold them off and get the lizard outdoors before they could seize it.

Arizona the part-Maine Coon caught and killed, and ate, more than one large roach in his time. And Rusty, the short-haired red tabby I grew up with, was a solid mouser and would leave his kills on Mom's dinner table chair. Didn't bother her; she grew up on a farm.

65 Cat hurt one of his paws yesterday. No blood, no cut, just limping and holding it up.

Vet said probably not serious (how TH would she know, without looking?) but bring him in Monday if he's still having trouble.

A little better today, I think. He's at least walking on it, though very slowly and carefully. Perhaps it's just a sprain. I hate that he's in pain, poor baby.

He's always been an outdoor cat, doesn't even know what a litterbox is for (I tried, but he's too set in his ways!).
