Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Have You Heard the Scuttlebutt? Disney Has Another Woke Bomb On Its Hands as Little Mermaid is Projected to Lose Between $50 and $100 MillionA hundred million here, a hundred million there, and pretty soon you're talking real money. I know we talked about the likelihood The Little Mermaid would flop on Friday, but we now have its second weekend box office. It dropped 58% from its first weekend to its second. That's pretty high. Not as bad as some of the worst-performing Marvel films, but high. And that second weekend drop kills any hopes that the Little Mermaid would keep generating millions every week consistently. In other words -- everyone has to do these dumb puns, it's the law-- The Little Mermaid doesn't "have legs."Woke shill Grace Randolf admits the film won't make more than around $5-600 million, which isn't break-even considering its cost. And also considering the fact that ticket sales are split between the studio and the actual theaters showing the film, which liberals always, always forget, or pretend to forget, when they're claiming the latest woke bomb isn't a bomb at all. Disney booster and woke-ism champion Rudolph worries the movie will actually wind up making $400 million or so, which is a "disaster," she says. On Midnight's Edge, they talked about liberal movie "journalists" trying to contrive some way for this movie to not lose money. One talked up the money it would get in television rights -- except that Disney no longer makes money by selling television rights. All of its properties turn into Disney Minus exclusives. To pump up Disney Minus and give people a reason to subscribe, they've chopped off one of the big secondary markets for movies, television. They pointed out that there will be an internal payment of money from Disney Minus to the Disney movie studio to pay for the TV rights, around $75 million. But this is just a paper transaction moving money from one Disney account to another Disney account. That doesn't bring any actual money into Die Maus. Relatedly, the leftwing shill media for years and years has been insanely protective of all woke movies, but especially woke Disney movies, routinely running Disney propaganda that the only people who don't like The Last Jedi, Lightyear, or The Little Mermaid are woman-haters and homophbes and racists. "Ists and phobes," as the shorthand has it. But now Disney has scored so many bombs in a row that even "journalists" are actually starting to notice what the public noticed five years ago. This article from Forbes, reprinted in Yahoo Finance, says "the Force has left Lucasfilm," and talks about Kathleen Kennedy's record of destroying one expensive IP after another. The Dial of Destiny will have to make $800 million just to break even. And that's assuming that Disney has been honest about the budget, which they almost certainly have not been. Disney is widely suspected of hiding their movies' costs, recording them as costs for other divisions, in order to hide just how poorly they've been doing under Bob Iger and Kathleen Kennedy's destructive leadership. I know that you know all this. Sorry about telling you a bunch of stuff you already knew. But the news here is that the alleged "news media" has begun to piece this non-scoop together. BTW, I had written earlier that Disney wants to buy Comcast out of their shared ownership of Hulu. This article says that Disney is required to do so -- and they need to come up with $9 billion (or more) in cash to do that. Yes, the Hulu deal is a requirement... and Disney is panicking, so they are trying to devalue Hulu as much as possible over the next 12 months and negotiate an out... Posted by: Nova LocalOh, LOL. If that's true we should all sign up for Hulu!!!! Then cancel after Disney is forced to pay out $9 billion. (But I don't know if it's true.) Note that Nova made a mistake (which he pointed out) about how much this will cost Disney. Hulu is worth somewhere around $28 billion, and Comcast's one-third share is worth a bit over $9 billion. I don't know if a Mass Subscription Effort -- the opposite of a boycott -- would jack up the value of Hulu and hurt Disney. I hope a geek media channel looks into this and gets us an answer. More from Nova Local: "Disney is the majority owner of Hulu, holding a two-thirds stake, while Comcast owns a third. Starting in January 2024, Comcast can use a put option to require Disney to take over its stake, while Disney can tell Comcast to sell it its stake. A transaction would be a multibillion-dollar affair. As per an agreement between the two companies, Hulu would get a fair-market value assessment from independent experts. However, the guaranteed minimum Hulu valuation of $27.5 billion means that Disney would have to cough up at least around $9 billion." Hollywood Reporter on the exact current terms. Disney booster and woke-ism champion Rudolph worries the movie will actually wind up making $400 million or so, which is a "disaster," she says. ======== The contracts are individually agreed upon, but it generally ends up being about 60% of the ticket price goes to the studio over the life of a movie in theaters. Worth mentioning that the Studio Entertainment division (films) averages around ~15% of overall company revenues. I think stat gets lost in some of the discussions when Disney itself appears much bigger. They can't tolerate tentpole movie losses indefinitely.

++++ From what I've read, it is north of $300 million when marketing (which there is a lot of) factored in. Domestic cut of the box office is better than foreign (and foreign generally is better than the shit show of the China take), but we're looking at needing around $600 million to break even. That's going to take some very long legs that it doesn't appear the movie has, especially not internationally. Unless this movie pulls a "Dumbo" and foreign audiences start loving it and buying out showings in weeks 3-7, it's probably a loser for Disney. Not a catastrophe, but a loser. Indiana Jones 5 is likely to be a catastrophe, since it will probably need to be in the billion dollar club just to break even... The public has moved on from box office mega hits. Movies are boring, woke and stupid for the most part. Mark Wahlberg is trying to open a new studio in Las Vegas. The contracts are individually agreed upon, but it generally ends up being about 60% of the ticket price goes to the studio over the life of a movie in theaters. The earlier, the more the studio makes, and the longer it goes on, the more the theaters make.
For the US market. Overseas, the studios take a smaller cut. In China, they get peanuts. Like 30%. @105: "The Little Mermaid has so much CGI and motion capture ..."
When you see the making of videos, it's even more awkward and embarrassing then you might assume. The "swimming" scenes have actors suspended in mid-air harnesses which have hula hoop like rings that automatically spin them for the twisty fast swimming effects. Except there's no water buoyancy to negate the obvious real life gravity that can be seen in the finished visuals. Uncanny valley stuff that might have been fixed with more production time and money, or maybe waiting a few years for better CGI tech. Posted by: Walter Freeman at June 05, 2023 05:12 PM (k1Qly) 166

"Disney is the majority owner of Hulu, holding a two-thirds stake, while Comcast owns a third. However, the guaranteed minimum Hulu valuation of $27.5 billion means that Disney would have to cough up at least around $9 billion."

Posted by: tubal at June 05, 2023 05:07 PM Around 2016. Disney had the rights to Lloyd Alexander's The Book of Three and The Black Cauldron, which it previously mashed into a single, horrible movie. In 2016, various entertainment news outlets reported it planned to try again, with a more faithful adaptation (2016). Instead, it churned out live-action Beauty and the Beast, Moana (not that great), Cars 3, and Thor: Ragnorak. Posted by: NaughtyPine at June 05, 2023 05:23 PM (fxCK2) 223

I mean, you're talking about a company that is starting up movies that cost upwards of half a billion dollars to produce and advertise with literally no script or concrete story arc already solidified into place before they begin.
The Disney Marvel way of making movies is to come up with a character, then try to fit them into their mega story arc which no one cares about any more. When they film, they cast a director based on check marks and give them the title, but then the producers each change the script and inform the director what they will do. The action sequences are shot separate from the director, who has no input on those parts. Like 25 people are involved in writing and rewriting and script doctoring. Everyone wants a piece of the movie because a smash hit Marvel film looks amazing on your IMDB page and resumee. The results are crap like Eternals and Dr Strange 2. You might want to keep an eye out on a show on Netflix called FUBAR, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was hyped up to be this big action comedy show but of course filled with modern comedy bullshit and girl power (Arnold retires from CIA but has to save his daughter who is also a CIA agent and there's stoner shitty comedians playing their support).
But from what Netflix has provided on their Top 10 page it got beat in ratings not only by some gay show called Bridgerton, but The Night Agent (where the FBI is always the hero) had almost 2.5 the first week ratings with a bunch of no names. People are just fucking tired with this constant shitting of the past to make the new seems less gay. We all have gaydar, we know it's super gay. This is why rude anime titties will save the future. I think Disney might make a few (literally a few, like five or six bucks) on The Little Mermaid. Hollywood doesn't like to talk about it but these productions are more and more subsidized. ‘ We're going to talk about The Little Mermaid, how it's doing okay domestically, but internationally, oh boy, this movie is in a ton of trouble ‘
Well, no, it’s not really even doing “OK” domestically. It’s way behind domestic projections. You think Disney projected a 60% drop off from an already underwhelming opening (long) weekend? This is important. Don’t let Disney pimps blame “racist” foreign audiences for this flop. Americans don’t like it either. Posted by: Elric Blade at June 05, 2023 05:56 PM (l7HIW) 334

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 05, 2023 05:49 PM (Keyt1) I have a beautiful daughter - plays scratch golf, is a vision to behold, just graduated Cum Laude from a major Liberal Arts College - the amount of love, time and effort put into to developing her as a young, confident professional woman, I cannot tell you, or even calculate - if her internet picture was shared here with her boobs out, I probably would weep, I don't mind saying. Posted by: REDACTED -------- Yep, that is the uniparty contributions where executives of megacorp toss a few bones to the controlled opposition. There is a connection between big donor money and corruption and always has been for office holders. The few honest ones get their own individual contribution networks such as Rand Paul instead of being lazy ass grifting senators who get their money from the Mitch leadership PAC. He gets this money from the same source that Rove does---rich whale donors that hate taxes and megacorps buying Uniparty protection like Pfizer, etc. Posted by: whig at June 05, 2023 06:02 PM (wUSgb) Posted by: Pete in Texas at June 05, 2023 06:02 PM (b8LUX) 342

Disney usually has a much higher percentage of take from the opening weeks, up to 90%. George Lucas started this, threatening not to give theaters movies if they didn't play ball. It's why theaters have to charge so much for popcorn and soda.
Another thing Disney does, and I think there might have been a little of this with Fast X, is to buy up tickets to make the box office look good. $200 million in tickets, of which Disney collects 90%, means is a good spend of $20 million in marketing, plus maybe another 10 million if the actors have a share of gross. Think about this - how could a studio that owns the rights to Indiana jones lose money? Not just a little money, a LOT of money? Easy - they spend too much making the movies.
Adjusted for inflation the original Indiana Jones cost $63 million to make. Temple of doom, $81 million. Last Crusade was $117 million. Dial of destiny is $300+ million. Let's say dial of destiny was made for $100 million. It would just need $200 million to break even, not $600 million. And that goes right back to Kathleen Kennedy - she's running things terribly. Budgets are way too high. Way too much is being spent on digital effects, and way too much is spent in reshoots. Those are things producers are supposed to control. Disney made Call of the Wild. It made $170 million worldwide - pretty good. Problem is they spent $125 million on it, most of it on a CGI DOG. It's like nobody told them real dogs exist.
That movie should have cost maybe $60 million, and maybe netted a $50 million profit. Instead, it cost $125 million, and lost $70 million. That is the problem. Posted by: Inspector kemp at June 05, 2023 06:52 PM (nJ1bF) 349
Robert Downey Jr., Dr. Dolittle.
Made $251 million Cost $175 million (more than Iron Man!) Lost $99 million. Eddie Murphy Dr. Dolittle (in 1998 converted to 2023$) Made $463 million Cost $132 million Made $199 million It cost less to make but made more money. Posted by: Inspector kemp at June 05, 2023 06:59 PM (nJ1bF) 350
I think digital effects is part of the problem - it lets lazy perfectionists run the show. It allows bad directors to hide their mistakes. "Everything will get fixed in post" means the story isn't well thought out to begin with.
It has become a crutch for bad filmmakers, and bad producers. A way to just throw money at problems. And heck, maybe it is just harder to see the problems with the movie when so much of the movie is being done in post. When you have to film everything live, it's easy to spot little mistakes, and make adjustments as you go along. I think it's also easy to think that digital effects can fix anything. Thye can, but it costs a LOT of money. It's like going to a hospital for every little ache and pain. It works, but it costs a fortune. Posted by: Inspector kemp at June 05, 2023 07:05 PM (nJ1bF) 351

In the last 12 months Disney has earned a profit of 27 billion
50 or 100 million is nothing but a rounding off error 27,000,000,000 27 billion 100,000,000. 100 million If Disney had 10 more "flops" like this It would result in a 4% drop in profits Posted by: Paul at June 05, 2023 09:45 PM (Ktf/2) 355
