Woke Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast Race-Swaps Aragorn for New "Lord of the Rings" Themed Magic: The Gathering Card Set

I know this is a rather niche concern compared to Target and Bud Light, but Hasbro is begging for a Bud Light-sized boycott.

An upcoming card game based on The Lord of the Rings appears to race-swap a number of major characters, including Aragorn, a central hero of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy saga.
As Breitbart News previously reported, "The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth" -- an upcoming set for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering (MTG) -- appeared to depict Aragorn as a dark-skinned man. However, the small size of the image left some doubt; the Aragorn character may have had that appearance due to the lighting of a climactic battle scene.
Now, official high-resolution previews from MTG confirm the set's artists have depicted him with African features, though Tolkien's novels describe him as having a "pale" face and green eyes.

A fan page previewing dozens of card designs shows MTG, a billion-dollar franchise owned by Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, has race-swapped several other characters for the new collection. Legolas the elf is depicted as Asian, Eowyn the human is black, and Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck the hobbit appears to be Hispanic or Native American.

Some critics have pointed out that the core elements of the fantasy series itself are rooted in historical England, with Tolkien taking mythical, cultural, and linguistic concepts from the island to create an English epic along the lines of Greece's Illiad, Wales' Mabinogion, Scandinavia's Eddas and Ireland's Táin Bó Cúailnge.

Some better news: John Cleese says the "Stan Called Loretta" scene will not be cut from the stage version of Life of Brian. He says American actors told him it had to be cut, but that he never said he would do that.

Which is good, on balance. A smaller target is easier to hit. I dunno if the MTG fanbase is largely woke or largely anti-woke or largely indifferent, but if it isn't largely woke than something like this could be very damaging even if it is fairly niche.

Time will tell, I suppose. I kinda hope it's damaging, because punishing those who destroy legacy cultural properties is a generally a good thing.

Hasbro/WotC have been damaging their brand in other ways besides the wokism. They produce way too much product, oversaturating the market. And their cards are overpowered shite nowadays. Okay, that was really funny. I chuckled out lout.

I read "The Hobbit" and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy a long time ago, like 1969 or 1970. I really enjoyed it, but as most things, the real world ruins that kind of heroic fantasy epic that is was.
People are the worst, and they want to ruin everything.

And John Cleese, despite trying to defend "Life of Brian" is still a tool. I saw "Life of Brian" in the theater a long time ago, and it wasn't really that funny to me.

241 For those that don't know what Magic the Gathering is I can shed some light. It is a collectible card game that is played all around the world. Some of the tournaments offer prizes in the tens of thousands of $$$$. They have mostly gone to sealed deck tournaments because of issues with open decks.

My son used to play the circuit and win some serious money playing, enough money to travel the Country along with Canada and the UK and pay all of his expenses playing the game and make some good money on the side.

Yemo is sacrificed to create the world and all life.

From the body of Yemo, Manu fashions the whole of mankind, this is why it’s called Mankind. The etymology is that we’re the sons of Manu.

This is why the engineer kills David later on in the movie because he offends him by telling the engineer his father wishes to live forever.

Death is integral to life. The Indo-Europeans understood this and so too did the engineers who are supposed to be them.

The whole movie had a lot of things you may not have noticed. The engineers even speak reconstructed Proto-Indo-European. It sort of feels like a home coming to a place you’ve never been to.

The last part to the myth is supposed to be Trito, who, like Manu, continues the sacrifice and appeases the Gods. However in this story, it seems the real Hero dies, and the sacrifice is broken. I wonder if this was an intended. Maybe some reflection is needed here.

Only other thing I can think of is a 'non-disparagement' clause - also literally unenforceable. Has to be proven in court that it was malicious and known by the defendant to be categorically untrue, ie he could just feelz it was true and that's legally enough - that bar is nearly impossible in any court.

I had an older person explain the economics of MtG cards and decks. Apparently there is a hierarchy of the playing cards. Highly valued (and older) cards are pretty much sitting in the hands of veteran players and usually do not get put into play, so as noobs come on board, they are playing with newer and less valued cards. To get any "mixing" whatsoever requires setting up special tournaments with arcane selection rules. It all sounded very cartel-like and I admit that I could not get a good handle on it.

407 Much like Star Wars, subsequent mediocre sequels have rendered me past the point of caring what happens to LOTR at this point. I enjoyed the books. Loved the Peter Jackson trilogy. I couldn’t care less about the rest.

It's not really that complicated. Most tournaments have rules saying which cards may be used. Some tournaments are "unlimited" and you can show up with old cards (but I think even there some cards were banned as overpowered). Some tournaments will list which expansions are legal (like, players can only use booster cards from the latest two expansions, something like that). Other tournaments might be in the "sealed deck" format, where the host of the tournament hands out sealed decks of cards plus some number of "booster packs" and the player then makes the best deck he/she can from the random cards. Since everyone is getting the same vintage of cards, the power levels should be fair (aside from someone being super lucky and getting an extremely rare card, then drawing it at the right time and gaining some advantage with it). The entry fee for the sealed deck tournament pays for the cards, of course; the player keeps the cards after the tournament.

Note, I haven't played MtG in a long time and I never played in a tournament. But there's a game store I like that seems to do well by hosting tournaments.

Wokeness has completely, totally taken over the customer demographic for MtG, D&D, and table gaming in general. WotC is alternately pandering to their customer base and treating them like cows full of money to be milked ruthlessly.

A friend from uni played professionally up to the national level in Canada. He found it so easy that he started goofing off; he brought a Yu-gi-Oh! arm shield toy to one of the tournaments and played every card by standing up and playing it with the overwrought flourish used in the show. Until they threatened to throw him out.

Much of the reason he didn't take it seriously was how much of a shitshow it was. MtG is not balanced, is not a well designed game, and is a terrible game for a competitive tournament - but it's what people want to play.
