The Freedom Caucus Objects to McCarthy's Compromise With Biden on the Debt No-Limit, Saying He Gave the Store Away

Some Freedom Caucus members are saying they'll vote against the debt no-limit sellout, but it doesn't matter: There are enough "Big Government Republicans," one member says, who will vote with the Democrats to pass this.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tamped down Republican opposition ahead of Wednesday's vote on the debt ceiling bill.

"I'm confident we'll pass the bill," the California Republican told reporters on Tuesday.

Ahead of the pivotal decision on the deal struck by McCarthy and President Joe Biden, the House Republican Conference met to discuss members' issues with the legislation, otherwise known as the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

Some but not all members of the House Freedom Caucus have vented about how the bill does not do enough to tackle America's deficit problem.

Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX), a member of the Freedom Caucus, urged his fellow Freedom Caucus members to "cut it out."

Two Freedom Caucus members, Reps. Dan Bishop (R-NC) and Chip Roy (R-TX), have vocally opposed the debt ceiling deal as have others.

Bishop floated using the motion to vacate, a parliamentary procedure to remove the speaker, over the debt ceiling.

Roy said on Tuesday that conservatives would have to "figure out the whole leadership arrangement again" in a veiled threat against McCarthy.

However, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the Judiciary Committee chairman and a Freedom Caucus member, said that ousting McCarthy over the debt ceiling deal was a "terrible idea."

Is it all bad? No, just mostly. Thomas Massie, who is usually someone I trust, says that at least it cuts some spending.

He also spotlights part of the agreement which returns the House to regular order, in which they have to vote on 12 separate appropriations bills instead of suspending regular order to vote on some huge "omnibus spending bill" that almost always is just the previous omnibus spending bill plus bonus money for the government, because it's been doing such a good job recently. We've been passing omnibus spending bills now since... well like since 9/11.

If Congress does pass an omnibus spending bill, the agreement is that that budget will automatically be cut 1%.

But... can't they just increase the spending in that budget by another 1% so that when they "cut" the 1%, it's the amount they wanted all along?

Massie wrote on Tuesday, "I've been in Congress for a decade and this is the first real bill that cuts spending. It also includes an automatic 1% cut to spending on January 1 if Congress doesn't pass the 12 appropriations bills."

10 One thing I can't get over is how ineffectual the Freedom Caucus always is. Whether under Bush or Trump, nothing they do really influences politics. It really puts their membership in perspective.

In 2024, the side calling for austerity to pay back the bankers will lose. Huge. Ideally, the President will negotiate down the payments while trimming the debts. Or repudiate them entirely, as plan B.

This morning I had another talk with the American President, Herr Biden, and here is the paper which bears his name upon it as well as mine [shows Fiscal Responsibility Act to crowd]. Some of you, perhaps, have already heard what it contains but I would just like to read it to you: [political word salad ensues]

And here we might be getting...1% reduction? Err...thanks guys.

But honestly if they aren't going to save the country and just say no to any more debt spending cuts don't matter.

The focus then should be onerous tax increases on leftwing interest groups. If there was a serious oppostion party we'd be taking about the abortion tax, the solar panel tax, the electric car tax and so on then paired with hand outs to conservative interest groups. Billions to Gun Owners of America for "gun safety classes", cash bounties for turning in illegals, cash payouts for people injured by the clot shot etc.

106 So for the first time in 28 years, the Judiciary Committee held a roll-call vote for a U.S. Attorney nominee. The result was an 11-to-11 tie. Rachael Rollins's nomination then moved on to a final vote in the full Senate. Her final confirmation vote was a 50-50 party-line tie. Harris then broke the tie for confirmation, and Rollins became U.S. Attorney on a 51-50 vote.

Republicans warned Democrats that they were buying trouble. "This is a vote you are going to regret," Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said to Democrats. Now, Cruz's words have come true.

On May 19, after just one year and four months in office, Rollins resigned when two investigations, one by the Justice Department Office of Inspector General and the other by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, outlined extensive misconduct. Basically, the reports showed that Rollins abused her power for political purposes in the supposedly nonpolitical position of U.S. attorney.

She looks awesome.

143 heard an interesting interview on the radio yesterday re Ken Paxton

The interviewee was repub Texas State rep Steve Toth who voted against Paxton's impeachment. He said the 20 accusations were either laughable, untrue or totally meaningless. He believes the person most responsible for the Paxton hate is Karl Rove and it dates back the 2014 race for Texas Attorney General when Paxton beat Rove's candidate soundly. Rove had dropped another $400k into the race in the last week while his candidate Dan Branch was down 20 points and he has never gotten over it.

He cited several of the allegations and proved how stupid they were. It was the Texas Freedom Caucus members who voted against it.

Apparently he's a soi boi who the FNM is trying to get to admit he's gay.

Its almost comical.

173 Even DU morons (lowercase "m") can see through the failure theater.

The freedumb caucus doesn't want to stop the bill. They want to be seen as trying to stop it (and failing), so they can run for re-election in their districts about their selfless, gallant attempt to stop China and the Biden administration. Their nitwit supporters will buy whatever excuse the Freedumb Caucus sells them, and they'll get to keep getting their monthly social security and SNAP benefits while complaining about the big bad gummint.

Biden won't claim debt ceiling win, because he must play the owned lib. The CBO scores show that President Biden bested McCarthy badly in this deal but President Biden is not taking a victory lap until this bill is on his desk to be signed.

“Look, one of the things that I hear some of you guys saying is, ‘Why doesn’t Biden say what a good deal it is?’” Biden said on the South Lawn of the White House. “Why would Biden say what a good deal it is before the vote? You think that’s going to help me get it passed? No. That’s why you guys don’t bargain very well.....

There was a study recently where they brought in people from the street and showed them a page of lines of various lengths and asked them to name the longest. And...as you might imagine with such an easy task they got it all right.

Then they had them do it as a group and added ringers to claim that one of the shorter lines was in fact the longest. And...most of the real volunteers went along with it and claimed the same.

They asked the real volunteers later why they picked what they knew was NOT the longest line and they said basically, they didn't want to disagree with the group even if the group was clearly wrong.

Even Reagan mostly stuck to persuading people towards normalcy, as opposed to think tank ideas. If he came up with a national sales tax, it wouldn't matter what other sweeteners came with it. He might not have lost the 1980 election, but he might not have won either.

Donald Trump mostly did a good job because he was about normalcy. Fairer trade, lower taxes, sane cultural policy, ending Roe. Not six week abortion bans and sales taxes.

Hence my earlier comment. IMO, Trump's best course of action would have been to say something like "Great new poll showing me up by 34 (not 25 as the [insult of your choice] at Fox News claimed)! MAGA 2024 [or something to that effect]!" That was as far as he needed to go; it would have conveyed some impression of his current political strength.

Again, I say that whether or not McEnany is a "backstabber," calling her out by name and implying that she is a globalist RINO and a nobody, when everyone knows she was his press secretary and often got very feisty defending him, achieved less than nothing from the perspective of his political future.

Another bone of contention I have with him and that dick f**k Rick Scott, is that they literally had to fight attempts to steal their elections, they then worked to clean up Florida elections but for some reason, have not supported Trump in his claims of election Fraud. Hmmm, why is that?

Throw in the fact he's a Yale/Harvard/MIC/JAG guy and I do not fully trust a man of that pedigree.

And him acting as if Trump doesn't and never existed as a thing and doesn't feel like he is beneath engaging him, reveals himself to be a an unthankful, rotten shit weasel.

365 358 What bothers me (and I'm not accusing anyone here of it) is the people who say that if Trump's not the nominee, they're not voting at all (or even voting for Biden), because the implication is that he's literally the only patriot/defender of Heritage America as far as politicking goes; that literally no one else, no matter what they say or do, should be given the time of day. A, that's out of touch with reality, and B, if it wasn't, then we might as well give up now, because there's no way we can win with only one guy on our side.

There is one candidate taking voter fraud seriously, and it's Joe Biden. That's why he'll win.

386 A source familiar with Wray’s early-afternoon call with Comer (R-Ky.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told The Post that the FBI chief confirmed the existence of an FD-1023 informant file from June 2020 accusing Biden of bribery and offered the lawmakers “in camera review” of the document.

The FBI had refused to share the document following a legally binding May 3 subpoena from Comer, which the chairman said Tuesday he would enforce with contempt proceedings against Wray.

Comer does not believe that the offer of in-camera review is sufficient to comply with the subpoena, the source said, indicating that the document standoff will continue as GOP leaders press for public disclosure of both the allegation and information about what the FBI did to review the claim.

390 Dr. T,

Quite humbly, most people do not give one iota of care what the politically attuned are saying about this or that. Quite frankly, ideologues (in the sense of firm opinions as to candidate preferences) are the only ones paying attention to the GOP race right now because simply put, too much is going on in personal lives and other news.

The traditional kickoff to prezzie primary season is after Labor Day and things do not get really serious until about December or so.

Eh, I agree and I don't. There's ideologues and then there's ideologues. We're a subset of a subset; the politically-engaged types who not only know who McEnany is to begin with, but also have the time/interest to dig up the history of her association with Trump. In my view, those who just remember her name and previous occupation outnumber those willing to do a deep dive, and I don't think Trump's tweet about her will play well with them. That's why I say it yielded no advantage as far as his campaign goes.

But yeah, nothing this far out will have any permanent effects.
