No surprise I love the Pre-Raphaelite works and Hunt is one of the best. The wonderful level of detail and use of appropriate color grab the viewer's attention. Rivet the attention, actually. Then the story aspect starts to come through. It is rich and powerful art.
One of the strengths in this painting is the way Hunt uses sunlight and shadow. It reminds me of the way Andrew Wyeth used them a few generations later. CBD, thanks for choosing this one. It is a delight. Posted by: JTB at May 31, 2023 09:47 AM (7EjX1) 67

Scholars agree that one of the purposes of the vast amount of typological details in Hunt’s paintings is to prompt the viewer to a leisurely examination of the work. Landow states, “In each of his major typological works, Hunt expected the viewer to concentrate upon all the details of the painting, gradually coming to perceive its meaning by what was essentially a process of meditation” (William Holman Hunt 16). Sorting out the myriad details and their relationships to each other, to the title, and to the inscribed text meant that the message of the work had time to become lodged in the viewer’s memory. And it was through this memory that
the message could then be effective. Posted by: rhennigantx at May 31, 2023 09:54 AM (BRHaw) 94

||Hunt left England for Egypt in January 1854, spending two years in the Holy Land. The major painting to result from this stay was The Scapegoat (1854-5, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight). He contributed to Moxon's edition of Tennyson's Poems in 1857. In 1865 he married Fanny Waugh. They left England for the East in August 1866; however while in quarantine detention in Florence Fanny gave birth to a son, contracted miliary fever and died. Hunt returned to England in September 1867. The following year he travelled back to Florence to work on a memorial to Fanny.||

The detail of the painting is wonderful - from the beautiful bedspread, to the overturned bottle on the seat of the chair, water pitcher on the floor, and opened bureau - and it certainly conveys religion & sadness. His 1st wife died in childbirth, his second wife was her younger sister. I thought perhaps the painting represented his wives united through sorrow with his first wife's sister praying over the bed of the deceased.

Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov has blasted Vladimir Putin's war tactics for not being 'brutal' enough amid his invasion of Ukraine and demanded that Russia declare martial law.
The strongman, previously seen as a close Kremlin ally, said the drone onslaught on Moscow this week showed a tougher response is needed from Russia's military that would see the war taken to NATO countries. 'Responses to such attempts to attack should not be harsh - they should be brutal,' Kadyrov said. 'In my opinion, it is necessary to declare martial law in Russia, to use all the combat resources intended for this, in order to sweep away this entire terrorist cell [in Ukraine] at once.' .. just wait until the entire terrorist cell in Chechnya is wiped out Posted by: SMOD at May 31, 2023 10:46 AM (RHGPo) 302

“We can’t get to net zero, we don’t get this job done, unless agriculture is front and center as part of the solution,” Kerry, the special presidential envoy for climate, said at the AIM for Climate summit in Washington.
He said that without cutting agricultural emissions, the world may not reach its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius – which scientists say must be achieved to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. President Joe Biden has pledged the U.S. will reach net zero emissions by 2050. Exxon Mobil recently announced that net zero by 2050 is not obtainable, therefore they would not include any statement about it in their SEC submissions. “Food systems themselves contribute a significant amount of emissions just in the way in which we do the things we’ve been doing,” he continued. “With a growing population on the planet – we just crossed the threshold of 8 billion fellow citizens around the world – emissions from the food system alone are projected to cause another half a degree of warming by mid-century.” He said we should start by stopping all farm products to the H. I didn’t say I’m down with anything. I said I think a lot of voters are not interested in hearing about Covid in mid-2023 and into 2024.
Posted by: Montec at May 31, 2023 10:56 AM (s8Hyc) I think it's about the primary, and Trump gearing up his attacks on DeSantis. Attacking Fauci is a way to attack Trump from the conservative side of things, in a way that Trump can't defend. I don't think it will be much of a general election theme. “We can’t get to net zero, we don’t get this job done, unless agriculture is front and center as part of the solution,” Kerry, the special presidential envoy for climate, said at the AIM for Climate summit in Washington.
John Kerry showed his ass and that this whole thing is a farce in the senate hearing where he was asked about the core samples and SCIENCE that showed the carbon rates were HIGHER during periods and Kerry spewed "THAT WAS BEFORE MAN GOT HERE!!!!" Uh.....yeah, dickhead. So how is it that MAN is so bad for the environment when it was WORSE before he got here?!? "I can see we can't have a serious conversation about this." No, Jagoff, we can't. No not in other words. He makes enemies when it's totally unnecessary because of perceived personal slights. Posted by: polynikes at May 31, 2023 10:59 AM (C1CZ4) "He makes enemies when it's totally unnecessary because of perceived personal slights." That's not how this works. This is politically naive. Politics works based on interests(and foreign policy for that matter), not comity. Trump's verbal navigation is perfectly fine, he profits those who side with him and costs those who side against him. This is an incentive to work with him. His main difficulty is his platform hits the pocketbooks of a lot of people. Working with Trump only offers power and status, not wealth, power, and status. Are people seriously claiming that Trump won't flip to praising someone he was previously criticizing if they come over to his side on something?
We saw that happen. We literally saw that happen during his presidency. Public criticism is a punishment, public praise is a reward or incentive. Carrot and stick, not rocket science people. And other politicians do this too, they'll frequently switch between public criticism and support depending on what benefits they receive.
