  • Why have air conditioning when we could all live like termites? (Ars Technica)

Well, apart from the fact that you're talk about demolishing every human dwelling in the world and rebuilding from scratch, apart from the infrastructure problems of such dense living spaces - not to mention the psychological and sociological ones, apart from the fact that termite mounds are found in very few and specific locations in the world for a very good reason, apart from the fact that the one example presented is located in a city at an altitude of a mile where nobody needs AC in the first place, apart from the fact that in any cold climate the people on the outer edge of the building - you know, the only part that has windows - would all freeze to death when winter arrives - termite mounds not notably common in Norway, for example, apart from all that, the square-cube law would mean that twice a day you'd have hurricane-speed winds blasting through the insides of your incomprehensibly expensive new megastructures.

Apart from that, sure. Eat the bugs and live like them too. I'll be over here. In my house. Eating steak. Or chicken nuggets anyway, given the price of a good steak.

  • Electric truck maker Nikola is at risk of being deleted from NASDAQ mostly because it hasn't made any electric trucks. (Tech Crunch)

It has faked some videos of electric trucks, though, so maybe Disney will buy it.

  • IMEC - the global body that tries to manage the semiconductor industry the way an ailurophobe manages thirty to fifty feral cats - has laid out plans to reach the 2A node by 2036. (Tom's Hardware)

2A - two Angstroms - is 0.2 nanometres. Which is slightly smaller than a single silicon atom.

It might seem impossible to construct silicon chips with features smaller than silicon itself, and you'd be correct, except for the fact that these are not engineering numbers but marketing numbers, which is to say, lies.

And that would mean the whole plan is nonsense except for the fact that the current mainstream production nodes - 7nm and 5nm - are also marketing numbers.

So, yeah, chips are going to keep getting larger and smaller and more complicated at a rapid pace for at least another decade.

  • Am I the asshole unethical one? (Daily Nous)

An ethics professor - I've made my opinions on the field of ethics clear before - made it very clear to his class that if they cheated on their exam, they would fail.

Then he posted a sample exam with obviously incorrect answers to a known cheating site. We're talking about 2 + 2 = banana kind of answers.

    Then his students cheated.

At least he didn't have to fail them for cheating, because they failed in the old-fashioned way of getting zero on the test.

I think they have a bright future as ethicists.

  • Don't buy HP printers. (The Verge)

HP offers a "Plus" program where - if you sign up within seven days of buying your new printer - you get "free" ink for "six months".

Oh and also HP locks your printer to prevent you ever buying non-HP ink cartridges, even if you later cancel your subscription, even though HP inkjet printers are certified as not locking out third-party ink cartridges.

Epson and Brother both sell inkjet printers with ink tanks that - this is complicated, so bear with me - you fill with ink.

  • "China's" "home-grown" "Powerstar" CPU is a painted-over Intel 10th generation Core i3. (Tom's Hardware)

Not in the sense that China stole Intel's design and made the chips itself while claiming credit for the design effort, since Intel's 10th generation chips were made on a 14nm process and China does have 14nm production capability, but in the sense that these are made by Intel and then literally painted over with new part numbers.

Which is one way to do it, I guess.

  • Meanwhile in Real China TSMC is preparing a 6x reticle size CoWoS-L super carrier interposer for extreme SiP processors. (AnandTech)

You know how a few years ago AMD launched its new Zen CPUs, and rather than making an 8-core chip for desktops and a 16-core chip for workstations and a 32-core chip for servers (which they couldn't do because they didn't have any money), they made a single 8-core design that you could use one or two or four of according to your need?

That's what this is about. Only six times bigger.

I bought a new HP 9025e printer a couple of months ago. It offered the "HP Plus" shit, and I recognized it immediately as a scam after some checking.

HP also tries to get you to use the "smart app" to set up the printer. You don't have to, and can download basic drivers for it, or just use the built-in Windows drivers (at least for print and scan, some features may be missing). Linux recognizes and handles it just fine as well.

Besides the locking out non-HP ink, the HP Plus thing also turns the printer into a spy device, that is always phoning home and relaying info about what you're printing and shit like that -- printer won't work without internet connection if HP Plus is enabled.

Don't activate that whatever you do, and just the basic drivers.

28 When I was 18, I always stayed up late (actually when I was 12 or so I listen to the radio until late, late at night under the covers of my bed) Watched the late, late shows on TV and still got up to go to school. Now since I'm much older, I try and get my sleep, and never stay up late. I did sleep in until late morning, and my mother was always yelling up the stairways to get the hell up. Never ate breakfast before school, now the kids get free breakfast at school, so they can learn to depend on the government to feed them.

I'll have to read the "live like termites" article. That used to be the stuff of insanely dystopian SF novels. Asimov's SF/detective stories The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun, for instance, postulate that humanity has moved into enormous indoor enclaves and rarely come out to see the sun.

Okay, they do this for their fungus to flourish. But a temp of 87 inside sounds hellish to me. Humans function best at temps around 72 F. and at moderate humidity. That's the reason for A/C systems cooling and drying the way they do.

Sounds like me. In the summers I'd stay up most of the night, reading and writing and listening to the radio, go to bed about 5 am, get up around noon and eat, nap from 2 to 4, and repeat. My mom worked overnight, so I could manage this. School, I got up about 6 am, made my own breakfast, slogged through the day, and got to bed around 10 pm.

Those summers ket me sane.

58 Happy Memorial Day Weekend

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed.

The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

59 I've decided that it's just a silly thing to put out rainbow flags. If we don't know you, why do we need to know your sexual orientation, and if it's something you were born with why are you proud of being gay? It's not as if you worked on a skill for years such as playing the piano. "I'm going to improve my gay skills"? Many, many "low profile" gays are nice people. You would find out they were gay because you got to know them as individuals and liked them, even if you thought marriage in the church should be between a man and a woman. Some very talented people were gay such as the Russian composer whose name I can't spell at the moment or Walt Whitman, but I'm sure they would rather be appreciated for their artistic talents than because they were gay-aside from the fact gayness wasn't celebrated back then.

Fire ants do some pretty fancy humidity and temp control of their mounds as well. We are not fire ants. We are not termites.

I once listened to an hour long lecture by a Clempson Cow Collidge entomologist on fire ant environmental controls.

It gets hot and dry. Fire ants take their mounds deep into the ground. You won't even see them. Now, let it get wet, and they build them back up. You'll see them all over the place.

We are not fire ants.

63 And Douglas Murray who is gay and a writer-A Brit who lives in the US- says the same thing:

Oh no - it’s pride month…. So, as I find myself pointing out every year, if there’s something you shouldn’t feel shame for then you shouldn’t feel pride for it either. Being gay is a morally neutral fact. Neither pride nor shame. Just being. Like everybody else.

Fire ants sense of "smell", their ability to detect chemical "scents" is to a dog as a dog is to humans. It makes getting poison to the queen quite a task. They have a long food chain that gets to the queen. So your poison has to be something they can't "smell".

Anything funny happens, and they know the source, and line of the food. All the contaminated ants are thrown out of the colony, killed if need be.

It makes baiting them hard. The poison has to be slow enough acting that it can get to the queen before they detect anything wrong.

Fast acting ant killing poison has its place. But it ain't gonna take em all out. They used to talk about fire ant eradication. Then it became "control". Now, it's just "management".

Sunday sales are anybody's guess. One county or city may allow it, neighbors no way. At least there are no state liquor stores.

They passed some ordinance in some New Jersey beach community about walking around with booze. Unlawful, even if the bottle is unopened.

In my area some little liberal town banned all plastic bags so the state liquor store in that town can't give you any. So you have to walk to your car with an unopened bottle - which is illegal in some other towns.

269 Save the planet by making consumers provide their own cloth bags that required massive amounts of water, chemicals, and energy to grow the plants, then additional chemicals water, and energy to process, before before being shipped across the ocean (and maybe shipped to China in the first place, too) prior to being shipped to environmentally conscious consumers here in the USA that will need to use water and detergents after each use in order to maintain sanitary conditions.

The planet thanks you for your love!

271 Brown paper bags double as a OE40 bottle koozie, and keep your prints off the bottle if you drop it when the popo are chasing you.

And they're classy. Any old body can tote around a n exposed 40 bottle their choice. But sipping out of a thirsty-two wrapped in a brown paper sack shows style and distinction.

Bring back brown paper sacks !!!

273 Brother does nake great printers but some of the recent models have the OEM supplies only nonsense. Which can be defeated I understand but takes some doing. Do your research. Most of the manufacturers have now succumbed to this to some degree.

When I was a kid, the liquor store sacks sucked - too thin. But the grocery sacks were useful, like your mom showed. And they folded up great and stores easy. We'd put them over plants in a late frost.

"It’s not like people “choose” to be gay. But if you shouldn’t feel shame over a thing then there’s no reason why you should feel pride over it either. It just is. Like having brown hair, or blue eyes. Why feel “pride”?".

They know they're not "born that way". They know they've been created via abuse.

290 I've got a Brother monochrome laser printer that I purchased just before the coofdemic from a now defunct Office Depot on sale for ~$80. It's been serving me extremely well for my particular use case: reliably printing on those rare occasions in which I actually need something printed. Inkjets are complete ass in that regard. It's a shame @273 that they're now going the DRM/lockout route. I certainly won't be doing any firmware updates on it.

302 Even setting aside the DRM nonsense, HP printers are a pain in the ass. Not built all that great and the ink cartridges dry out. I've had two different models over the years, not a fan. The Canon MP250 I had in Minnesota on the other hand was an absolute tank of a machine, it'd go for a year without doing anything and just fire right up with perfect quality. Unfortunately I was a dumbass and left it behind so now I need to either get another Canon or finally upgrade to laser.
