Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Eric Adams Proposes New Measures That Will Totally Shut Down Shoplifting in Thunderdome NYC; REI Flees Portland, Citing Runaway CrimeNew Yorkers elected Eric Adams because he claimed he'd bring law-and-order back to NYC. He lied.Shoplifting has become a crisis in New York City, with recent numbers showing a 44 percent jump in incidents in 2022. Mayor Adams says repeat offenders were behind a third of those thefts last year, and now he is rolling out a new plan to tackle the issue. "250 people in 2023 have been arrested almost 2500 times, again, that's 30 percent," said Michael Lepetri, the NYPD's Chief of Crime Control Strategies. "Who are these people: 52 percent are convicted felons." The new crackdown includes...Get ready for this "crackdown." giving first-time offenders intervention programs instead of prosecution...That's not a "crackdown." That is letting thieves walk free. ...de-escalation training for retail employees..."De-escalation training" means training retail employees to not confront or attempt to stop thieves. Again, this is not a "crackdown." This is teaching shopowners how to more efficiently permit thieves to loot their stores. ... establishing neighborhood retail watch groups to share information about a theft in real-time with one another and the police...For what purpose? Eric Adams doesn't intend to arrest these people and is telling shop owners not to grab thieves so that the police can collect them. And this is my favorite: ...and installing kiosks in stores to connect would-be thieves with social service programs. These kiosks would provide counseling to thieves, asking them, do you really want to loot this store? So there's your "crackdown"! ![]() Don't call it a "crackdown." It's not. It's open encouragement for thievery on an industrial scale. Literally an industrial scale -- these thieving crews are run by organized crime, often Eastern European. No single person needs that much Prell. ... "So when people come in that were just about to steal, they won't because they realize that stealing is a source of a different problem for them. So they're going to use the kiosk to access social services. I'm sorry, but that's just a pipe dream," said Ralph Cilento, a retired NYPD Lieutenant Commander of Detectives and currently an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal College. "And that is he's doing that specifically to satisfy his liberal base, which I understand he has to do." According to Cilento, there is one deterrent to crime. "Shoplifters need to be caught and prosecuted," he said. "That's the end game."Nah that's racist. David Strom notes that Eric Adams had some kind of commission meet for six months to brainstorm how to stop shoplifting. This is what they came up with! MacGruff the Crime Dog kiosks! After six months! Get out of the cities while you can. Meanwhile, the camping/outdoorsmanship retailer REI has closed its store in Portland. Released emails show that REI had been pleading with Portland to please, please, please do something about the rampant theft making doing business in Portland a losing proposition. Portland's mayor Ted Wheeler said "no." An hour's notice isn't a courtesy. It's a calculated discourtesy. And one that Wheeler well-earned. Only after REI announced it was fleeing Portland did city "leaders" move to appease them. What happened next will not surprise you in the least. The stolen car was rammed through the glass front doors so that thieves could loot the store. Too bad there was no video surveillance system installed at the front of the store so that police could see the thieves' faces. Roughly 12 hours after REI made its public announcement, Wheeler sent a letter to the retailer, acknowledging that the city's efforts were "not enough" and that the city is willing to work with the company to find "more creative solutions to address (its) immediate needs."Note that Wheeler, like Eric Adams, will not commit to simply arresting, prosecuting, and imprisoning thieves. Oh no -- they will only entertain more "creative solutions" than the one solution which works. And oh -- Jordan Neely's uncle was arrested for pickpocketing and possession of a knife. He was just turning his life around. He's a gentle giant. Here are some pictures from his high school graduation, 22 years ago. Look he's wearing a mortar cap. What a scholar. So much promise. He was thinking of applying to CUNY and recording a rap album. An uncle of Jordan Neely -- the homeless man choked to death on the subway this month -- was arrested near the Port Authority Bus Terminal for allegedly stealing purses from restaurants, police sources said Tuesday. Christopher Neely, 44, had acted as something of a representative for the grieving family in the aftermath of his 30-year-old nephew's May 1 death, frequently speaking out about the lightning-rod case. But Neely was also allegedly wanted for a pattern of grand larceny, including the handbag thefts, according to the sources. A member of the NYPD's pickpocket team spotted Neely, of Hamilton Heights, at about 11 p.m. Monday near the Manhattan bus station. He allegedly took off when the officer approached him -- and fought back when cops caught up to him after a brief chase, the sources said.Violently resisting arrest, you say? Plot twist. How about never? Soros prosecutors don't prosecute criminals. They prosecute citizens who resist the criminals allowed to prey on citizens by Soros prosecutors. Update: Ace, You missed a key point that came out later about the Portland REI case. In his message to REI, the mayor outlined strategies he thinks could help the outdoor retailer minimize theft and other crime. For one, the mayor requested that REI report all incidents to the Portland Police Bureau and to detain shoplifters. The mayor also suggested that REI reconsider policies that prohibit its security and staff from participating in prosecutions that are referred to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. That's right - even if the Soros DA somehow got motivated to prosecute shoplifting at the REI store, it was REI's policy not to cooperate with prosecutors. Classic Portland: "We want crimes to be reduced at our store, but not if it involves cooperating with icky cops and prosecutors". Eff them. That is a good point. Part of that is probably just "Don't Burn Our Store Down to the Ground" posturing. But maybe not. Eff them, indeed. These corporations deserve to be looted into bankruptcy. What's funny about REI fleeing the "untenable" nature of diversity is their "racial and social justice safe trails program." They want to make trails safe by making them feel inclusive for non-whites, even though the reason trails are unsafe to begin with is non-whites. All of this bullshit that Adams is talking about (and many other mayors) is based on one single bad premise that is central to the Progs' worldview. You can find this bad premise everywhere - in urban crime policy, in policing, in popular (for some definitions of "popular") media like the CW's "Gotham Knights," in colleges, in think tanks, etc.
That one bad premise is this: poverty causes crime. People steal because they need to steal in order to survive. Those in poverty commit crimes because they *must* commit crimes and therefore the only way to reduce crime is to reduce poverty, and to reduce poverty we must redistribute wealth by some means. That's it. That's the entire premise, and it is *wrong.* Virtually none of this crime is because people won't eat if they don't steal. My business is a franchise that is based out of California. We have gotten a number of emails lately about shoplifting hitting fellow owners in blue areas, to include descriptions of how it’s happening with diversion, there hasn’t been reported smash and grab, at least not advertised. The gist of the emails is being aware, making employees aware, but not getting in confrontations. It’s not just the big guys getting hurt in these blue cities so the justification that corporations should suck it up as a cost of doing business falls pretty darn flat. That is so ridiculous a concept for anyone who knows anything about running a business of any size.

This is not a "people crowded into a small area" problem. This is a "culture of lawlessness" problem. I've been to huge cities that are very safe because the law is enforced. Heck, we just had a three-day festival that tripled our small-town size and people felt safe enough to leave their lawn chairs along the parade route and their houses unlocked.
What were the police doing? Walking around constantly, talking with people (and turning down free food). No one challenged their right to be there, called them pigs or threatened them. It doesn't hurt that shopkeepers are armed too. Posted by: pookysgirl, ready to get back to normalcy at May 24, 2023 01:42 PM (dtlDP) 166

This can not end well. It will inevitably end. Because things that cannot continue won't.
——- The reason for this is twofold: 1. There is a huge risk of violent retaliation once these idiots are freed, which is a very likely scenario and 2. There are lawsuits filed by the perps for discrimination or public lynchings (metaphoric, but I doubt it feels very metaphoric to the people going through it) as we have seen time and time again, which costs the company money, the employee money, etc. not to mention the costs and mess created when your store becomes the target of leftists campaigns against you. Let me have a moment of introspection and question my humanity as well as explore all my past traumas that led me right here to the puffer coat section of REI. Let me take these coats out of my bag, hang them back up neatly by size and hit up that kiosk so I am able to set my life straight!

>>>The mayor also suggested that REI reconsider policies that prohibit its security and staff from participating in prosecutions that are referred to the Multnomah County District Attorneys Office.
>>>That's right - even if the Soros DA somehow got motivated to prosecute shoplifting at the REI store, it was REI's policy not to cooperate with prosecutors. It's not like REI can say to an employee "if you have evidence of a crime you cannot testify to it in court nor notify law enforcement." That would be illegal and if REI were to actually punish someone for doing so they could be sued. Sure you can say "If I have evidence I'm not under a legal obligation to volunteer it." As soon as you say "Hey you, whom has evidence, if you talk to the cops there goes your job" that's obstruction. So I'm curious as to what sort of cooperation is "against policy" Posted by: mikethemoose at May 24, 2023 02:08 PM (JcWw+) 326

Anyone outdoorsy with the least bit of common sense anymore only goes to REI to check sizes for clothes, backpacks and sleeping bags. I'll admit, a couple of weeks ago I just bought a big North Face tent on sale off of the REI website for car camping. About $60 cheaper than anyone else selling the same tent online.
