The Morning Report — 5/23/23

tuppencescott.jpg

Good morning, kids. Well, Senator Tim Scott has thrown his hat into the GOP ring for 2024. Hooray. The Republic is saved. I'm sure you all can just sense my orgasmic glee that's on par with Ben Stein after half a bottle of Wild Turkey and some ludes.

"I will rebuild and restore every rung of the ladder that helped me climb, because I want my American story to pale in comparison to yours," Scott, 57, told supporters at Charleston Southern University. Scott, the only black Republican in the Senate, has held the seat since 2013 and was reelected last year by more than 25 points.

Scott joins an increasingly crowded Republican field that includes Trump and fellow South Carolinian, Nikki Haley. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is also expected to make his run official this week. All three hopefuls lag behind Trump in the polls. A Harvard University poll conducted last week shows Scott polling at just 1 percent, Haley at 4, and DeSantis at 16. Trump, meanwhile, is polling at 58 percent.

But the numbers aren't enough to deter Scott, who says he’s not running with the aim of becoming another candidate's vice president. Scott argues that he offers voters a unique combination of optimism and winning conservative policies—an alternative to the pessimism and culture war politics that dominate much of the GOP primary field . . .

. . . Trump himself touted his work with Scott Monday in a statement wishing his primary rival well.

"Good luck to Senator Tim Scott in entering the Republican Presidential Primary Race," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "I got Opportunity Zones done with Tim, a big deal that has been highly successful. Good luck Tim!"

I like Tim Scott, or to be more accurate I liked Tim Scott. Not that I don't now but it was a hell of a lot more when he first came on the scene. Since then, he's been at best a "meh" Senator and to the best of my recollection has gone along with Mitch McChiCom on a number of key issues. He gets just a "C" rating from the Conservative Review Liberty Score, although some of their positions on issues might not be in line with our's either. But that said, he has been consistently underwhelming in the upper chamber, at least from my perspective on things.

What he has going for him is at least he's not Nikki Haley, a total fraud, ditto Asa Hutchinson, or even worse than both of those, the oleaginous lipid mass known as Chris Krispy Kreosote Christie. I find it most interesting that Donald Trump chimed in to wish him well, and to praise him for helping him on the enterprise zone thing. Is he telegraphing a VP pick? Certainly seems that way considering for the past several months, he Trump has taken every opportunity to trash Ron DeSantis, someone who IMHO has accomplished a hell of a lot more than Tim Scott.

If, after somehow surviving being kangaroo-courted into prison to go on and win the nomination, Trump picks Scott, he'll be picking another Mike Pence. And whatever goodwill and respect I have left for him will go straight down the shitter.

And I see that John Thune – Conservative Review rated as an "F"
who will be given the royal jowls upon Yurtle's retirement has come out and endorsed Scott. This is what we call in the trade "the kiss of death."

As a complete aside, this Vivek Ramaswamy character has been throwing out a ton of red meat, among other things the pardoning of all J-6 political prisoners. "He's part of the WEF! He got a Soros endowment!" (money, not yutzickle). Hundreds of people have and yes many have gone on to be part of the Dark Side, while many others have not. We'll have to wait and see on Ramaswamy. "Trust but verify" as Reagan said about Gorbachev. I only put it out there because so far from what I have heard, I have liked. It's not a presidential endorsement but he seems to have similar attitudes about things that we do, so let's keep him in the reserves.

Psaki-psircling back, regardless of the bullshit nature of polling at this stage and perhaps at any stage, my own personal sense is that, barring some unforeseen event, Trump is going to be the nominee. His greatest asset more and more unfortunately becomes his Achilles heel: his mouth. For sure, he feels that DeSantis is probably the only one in the pack who has a shot at the nomination, and so he's on the attack. The problem is, it's counterproductive to our movement and I think to his campaign. As I said, DeSantis' record in Florida in terms of the culture war insanity, education and Chinese COVID is self-evident. Small wonder that outside of Texas, people are fleeing there from all over the country.

That said, Ron DeSantis does have baggage that troubles me. In particular the fact that people like Karl Rove and the Murdochs are singing his praises. What does that indicate? Either he's their puppet or they're just so blinded by Trump Derangement Syndrome that they're backing him to make sure Trump doesn't get the nod. That doesn't make sense because they're all globalist Deep State swamp-dwellers. Surely they realize that the vast majority of DeSantis' policy positions are in line with the MAGA movement? They may be dumb but they're not stupid.

Oh well. Politics ain't beanbag as the expression goes, but as I have stated, we are no longer in an environment of business as usual. Do any of the aforementioned realize this? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe there's no other choice than for everyone to engage in retail politics despite the fact that we are rapidly devolving into some sort of neo-East Germany. I'd rather Trump, DeSantis, Ramaswamy and whoever else form a united front that both exposes the GOP-e grift stoogery, and stands united to confront the mortal danger that we are facing.

Stop laughing. I'm a cockeyed optimist.

11 The 14th Amendment Gambit is a ruse that was never going to happen.

When Treasury sells debt it holds an auction with a stable of large banks.  The winning bidders buy the debt and resell into the broader market.  Huge bucks involved with thin spreads.

The risk management/ legal teams at these banks would never let the bank be a buyer in the billions if there's any doubt about the legal authorization for the paper being bought.  And there's the huge risk of the market not buying tainted new paper when there's trillions of untainted paper as an alternative.

The 14th Amendment Gambit is being used to fill the dead air of Biden not negotiating.  They'll change up soon and move to shutting down the government.  In the end , many federal employees will get a paid holiday.

I'd like that, too. But let's be brutally honest: unless the GOP nominee is some anodyne cipher like Judas Pence, Sunununununu, Hucklebuck or Haley, they will not be allowed to win the general.

And the only bright spot there is that, perhaps (as I believe JJ said) the utter blatancy of the steal will finally open people's eyes to the fact that 'voting' is a sick joke and is not the way forward.

27 What needs to be done (or at least attempted) is obvious. Trump's initial popularity was tapping into that. Say the obvious. Do the obvious. Tell the Emperors that their ass is showing.

Any presumptive candidate, whoever they are, that engages in rhetoric or positioning that seems off-brand or counter-intuitive is immediately going to turn off our half of the electorate because of that. This isn't the time for machiavelluan triangulation or opaque cloak and dagger maneuvering. We don't need subtle gambits of supporting awful people and awful things to get some kind of intrigue bonus. There is no edge to be had when the proper tool for the job is a ten pound sledge. We know who the good guys and bad guys are now. Just be the good guy and get to it.

His scatter-gun approach certainly is. It isn't that there's no criticisms to be found for DeSantis. He is spot on and awesome on the culture issues and the border. He is much more vulnerable on foreign policy (especially Ukraine) and probably on the economy (he has no stated platform). But some of the attacks Trump has made are insane - like defending Disney and Bud Light (the latter not being an attack on DeSantis, but more general).

He needs to focus his efforts on actual vulnerabilities, not attack DeSantis from the left on the culture and corporate issues. That's a loser of a strategy.

No, it isn't. It also isn't our enemy. India is what it has been since the Partition: independent. Sometimes they align with us, sometimes not. Even back immediately post-Partition when they were enthusiastic socialists who usually went along with the USSR, they didn't do so in lock-step and caused plenty of heartburn in the Kremlin when they failed to toe the line.

India does its own thing. Sometimes that will align with our thing, sometimes not. Sometimes it will even align with the enemy's thing. India should be dealt with transactionally, not made the cornerstone of strategy - either as a support beam or as a target.

67 I think the "race" will be to see who gets the GOP nod. Typically the GOP does their infighting via political posturing and behind the scenes skullduggery. So it'll be a while yet before the public is shown what the Republicans have yacked up for the base.

But in the end it won't really matter will it? The road to 1600 Penn Ave for a Republican is pretty much closed off.

78 Target Becomes the Latest Target of Anti-Woke Boycott as it Sells ‘Satanist Pride’ LGBTQ+ Products for Kids
++++
Irrelevant. The right has been targeting (pardon the pun) Target for years. The left loves Target, and the suburban AWFL group *adores* Target. Target is their "safe space." Leftist political activism is part of Target's brand. They've embraced it and navigated the initial disruption. It's an example of going woke and not going broke. Like Nike, it is part of the brand identity and it is doing well with it.

A boycott of Target will fail. It has already stopped being a general-appeal company, so doubling down costs nothing. The general-appeal companies are the outfits with greater potential for boycott success. Target is not one of those companies anymore.

-if you cannot trust what anyone tells you, where does that leave you?
-You can trust what you see with your own eyes
-you can try to do a classification of 'trusted' vs 'shaky' sources.
-There are one whole hell of a lot more of the latter than the former.

There was never going to be enough evidence to win-- not even outright confessions would have been enough.

So what's the point of enforcement if only one side will follow the rules and the other side will never be punished?

I think a lot of that is what people hear. As often as he talks about the obviously rigged 2020 election he talks about same day paper ballots. That never gets played up in the media because they would rather say Trump is a crazy election denier but he does say it.

Unless Democrats can coax China into releasing another virus and force mass mail in voting on us 2024 is not going to look much like 2020. Joe won't be able to hide in his closet and he will have an actual record to defend. And he can't. His own party doesn't want him to run.

Voting reform takes place at the state level not national. Win at the state level and make changes as has been done in FL and VA.

187 Regarding the steal...

If the GOP really had any intention of winning any future "election" they would have already put in place their version of ballot harvesting, ballot creation, ballot injection, whatever.

That goes for Trump, DeSantis or anyone else.

Maybe they have, and done so quietly, which would be a practical way of going about it. However I don't give anyone within the Republican party enough gumption to actually have carried it out.

So, again, it doesn't matter who the GOP puts on a ticket unless they've got their own mechanisms in place to collect a massive number of ballots while negating Democrat ballots.

222 >>Short answer: he's going to move left on social issues, like abortion, as he did on spending as President. Will it work? Doubtful; Trump is simply poison to any but his existing supporters. Until voters vote for self-interest (peace and prosperity) instead of tribal issues I just don't see him having a shot.

He's lately been out talking about how he did more for the pro life movement than any president in history by appointing SC justices who overturned Roe. I don't think he'll flip on that. He might, correctly, say national bans are counterproductive and it should be a state level issue as the Constitution requires but that's about it.

I bet he focuses on schools, the left's obsession with sexualizing children and a host of social issues plaguing the country that have nothing to do with abortion.

The guy did get 75 million legal votes last time, most of any sitting president in history. He's not exactly Walter Mondale.

224 “The Rule is nothing more than a blatant attack on the domestic oil and gas industry,” Commissioner Buckingham said in her letter to the EPA. “Rather than encourage the continued use of clean and abundant natural gas for energy generation, the Rule seeks to burden our natural gas-fired plants with untenable restrictions to compel their closure or conversion to a fuel source like green hydrogen.”

This blatant attack on natural gas energy generation by burdening these plants with untenable carbon capture requirements and the resulting added draconian costs of them accomplishes two things. It will drive up energy costs dramatically to where the solar power madness can suddenly be declared cost competitive and once that is in place the climate bunnies move to mandate the plants be closed since they are no longer economically or technically viable. We are headed into a bad place energy wise which will drive the economy into a tail spin. A major depression is quite thinkable over the next decade or so.

Simply put, the implementation of this Rule would be an all-out attack on the energy industry, the robust Texas economy, everyday taxpayers, and public education funding in the State of Texas.”

Now would be a great time to reassert the 9th and 10th Amendments and call this illegitimate bastard agency for what it is - flatly unconstitutional. It is light-years away from the pretext lie that the EPA needed to manage superfund sites, where it is now a tool of the CCP to take out an industrial/economic adversary.

There are rail lines that can haul coal to the GoM and Mexican Pacific coast ports and if the EPA has its way, there will be plenty of unused rail cars available.

And just to be sure, defund the wretched government education cartels - since Texas is reverting to third world status by importing and keeping third world people, then the schools should reflect that cultural change.

Spending is something every single president is going to do. The most realistic thing any Republican worth a shit *can* do is cut regulations as Trump did and encourage growth as Trump did. Short of deleting many major departments which most voters are not ready for and which will only make the smallest dent in total spending, cutting in any meaningful way is pie in the sky. Look at the obligations pie chart. Forget it.

301 Good morning, all, and thanks, J.J.

IDK, I like Scott & might be swayed to seriously consider him but for one bit of "bi-partisan" theater in which he played a part in a few years ago.

NAACP: In 1918, Missouri Representative Leonidas Dyer, a white Republican, introduced his anti-lynching bill in Congress. A progressive who represented a predominantly African-American district, Dyer was deeply disgusted by the violence resulting from race riots in St. Louis and continued lynching across the South.

From scott senate: Scott, Booker Introduce Legislation to Make Lynching a Federal Crime. Scott & Booker, along with then-Senator Kamala Harris, first launched their effort to make lynching a federal crime in 2018. BUT LGBTQI++ rights - already guaranteed by law - had been added into that draft bill.

So we got Kamala's & O's good friend Jussie Smallwood, his antics & the O's influence. And Rand Paul who wanted changes "not because I take lynching lightly but because I take it seriously. And this legislation does not." Around the time of George Floyd's funeral.

The Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act became law 3/29/22.
It could have been easier, faster.

ChatGPT will do the documentation for me, some of the AI in Github's co-pilot does a lot of the scut-work and allows me to spend more time solving the problem rather than trying to remember a code language's nuanced syntax. It is far easier to jump between code languages, with a good comment preceding an operation, it will write 50-70% of the code as it leverages solutions made hundreds of thousands of times by previous developers around the world.

Very cool. Productive people like you can leverage it.
It will be interesting to see how companies use it as the latest outsource to save on staffing costs.

Friend told me about a conversation he had with some high-powered people at a corporate shindig. This is what a primary contest is for. Air out the platforms, have the debates, stake out positions and talk about how you are going to accomplish them.

The trebuchets of pejoratives, scurrilous alleged back room associations, and clearly mendacious talk about who is supporting whom, is largely baseless and intended to divide the electorate or build up one candidate over the other. It's meaningless and only useful in the sense that it's a preview of what Democrats will be throwing at our candidate, no matter who that is.

I'll be watching and listening to what our candidates have to say about how they're going to get our country out of this morass. That will make my final decision.

You know, of course. Not that it matters: RDS needed a perfect campaign to be remotely competitive with the real President. Rove and the Cooch drove it into the ground before he could even announce.

Tim Scott is NOT going to be the VP pick, any more than Dr. Ben Carson was. This is zero effort civic nationalism from President Trump showing his magnanimity to anyone who isn't RDS, in Operation Reverse Hummingbird.

Right?

AI can definitely be a tool to increase productivity.

What concerns me is when it's (potentially, eventually?) used to make decisions in place of people. Like in the case with the lawyer. He could take the analysis and decide, based on his experience, current cultural/political/legal trend context and confidence in his ability to argue the case, to go for it. What happens when his employer says we now use AI to decide which cases to take, I don't care what you think or your gut feeling?

People are fallible, but they can be sued, fired, prosecuted, whatever. What happens when AI makes a bad decision? It's like bureaucracy - nameless, faceless, unaccountable people making policies - but probably worse?

408 Oh my...a DU thread discussing a Bulwark article. What kind of unholy union is this? Biden Is the Centrist President Everyone Says They Want.

One of the criticisms I often hear about Joe Biden is that he’s a tool of the progressive left who has given them full run of the store.

This doesn’t make a ton of sense! It seems to me that many (most?) lefty progressives are frequently frustrated by Biden because of his tendency to compromise with Republicans and conservative Democrats—as well as his reluctance to wade into the kind of big, structural fights that liberals believe are necessary.

Agreed. I don't have Trumpers on my social media feeds but I have left-wing friends who are constantly angry and frustrated with him (and Democrats in general) and refer to him mockingly as a 1980's era Republican.

Biden is more liberal than he gets credit for. It is unfair to criticize him for not pushing liberal priorities he cannot get passed. Given a second term and possibly the votes in Congress...we will see.

Biden will take off his aviators, slap a platinum trilly on the table,& yell "How about that, Jack?"

It will be interesting to see how companies use it as the latest outsource to save on staffing costs.

In the past twenty years alone, I haven't seen a short backlog of things to do. Usually a few times a month the seniors get with product and management to prune the backlog, prioritizing tasks. Many good features get left on the cutting room floor.

If AI helps speed things along, then customers can experience better UI, features and customizations. A lot of times clients are forced to operate in the way the system was designed and that creates inefficiencies. Being able to quickly scale, and adapt to a client's work-flow benefits everybody. Being able to leverage AI to create quick and dirty Proof-of-Concept algorithms lets us play around and find the best solution rather than a "safe" but wanting solution.

"McCarthy is attempting to tie a raise to the debt ceiling to spending cuts, and wants the government to spend less than they did last fiscal year. He has proposed spending cut policies like establishing new work requirements for those who receive federal subsidies."

The point is that the House Speaker has ALREADY tied a raise to the debt ceiling with spending cuts because the House has ALREADY passed a bill to do so. Slow Joe doesn't like fiscal responsibility one bit and has promised to veto the House bill if delivered. But the fact remains that the debt ceiling "crisis" can be resolved in moments if the president signs the House bill.

AI makes bad decisions all the time. It takes a skilled operator to direct AI to augment the craftsman's work.

AI is going to go down several paths. Responsible use by people who need to get things done and understand that AI augments, not replaces talent. Another path is the abuse path where bad actors corrupt the training data to push biased results that favor the bad actor. A third path is where ignorant and lazy people let AI do all their work and thinking.

I have seen technology do all of these things in law enforcement. Knowing how tech is [ab]used makes for certain exploits that cunning Survivor Class people will leverage when the Burning Times fully arrives.
