The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

It couldn't happen to a more deserving industry! The academy postures that they are an intellectual institution, above petty concerns like money and politics. They affect an air of philosophical detachment that in reality has not been the case since the 1960s...if ever.

Actually, the vast majority of its members are money grubbing champagne socialists, whose twin desires are to maximize income while minimizing actual productive work; and inculcating the mushy-headed undergraduates around them with the soft platitudes of communitarian, anti-market-economy, anti-freedom sensibilities that are accelerating America's decline into third-world authoritarian shithole status.

Imagine a work environment in which the greatest intellectual challenge one faces is to impress a bunch of 19-year-old, pimply-faced undergraduates of one's intellectual superiority. That is the lot of the typical college instructor and professor. And that supposed superiority is based in most cases on absolutely no real-world experience. The race hustle is the best example of this, as it is so often the professors with the least exposure to real America who rail against its structural racism. But business classes are taught by instructors who never worked in private industry, psychology classes are taught by people who have never provided therapy, and on and on. Of course the many "Studies" disciplines require no real-world experience, or for that matter any knowledge at all, because they are made-up nonsense!

And even assuming that these people have sufficient grasp of the topics at hand, so much of their class time is dedicated to a post-modern hellscape of racial, gender, sexual, class, ethnic divisions, and the pillorying of those whom they hold responsible...good old America and its evil market economy and its fixation on free speech and guns and liberty and autonomy.

College Enrollment Keeps Sliding Even Three Years After Lockdowns

Enrollment for most forms of postsecondary education in the United States continued to decline three years after nationwide lockdowns forced many students to temporarily continue their degrees online, according to a new analysis from the National Student Clearinghouse.

Public four-year institutions saw a 0.8% enrollment decline as of spring 2023, a somewhat less severe decrease than the 1.2% decline recorded in 2022 but more pronounced than the 0.3% decline in 2021 and the 0.2% decline in 2020. Private four-year nonprofit institutions meanwhile witnessed a 1.0% decrease in 2023, compared to the 1.2% decrease in 2022, the 0.4% decrease in 2021, and the 0.6% decrease in 2020.

So what the hell is the point of going to college for most kids? Are they going to learn real skills like reading and writing at a high level? Or higher-order thinking that isn't based on the axiom that claims traditional society being the root of all evil? Are they going to be exposed to all sorts of different ideas about the world, or are they going to be taught from the socialist handbook, in which the individual is the greatest danger on earth? Where freedom is to be tightly controlled by the elite, via law and, if necessary, its proxy mobs?

Sure...engineering and the hard sciences are still mostly safe, but they too are under assault, and will probably not survive another generation of attacks from within. When 2+2=5 is taken seriously as an alternative, and admissions are no longer based on merit but on political reliability (read leftist), genitalia, and melanin, who is going to build our bridges in 40 years, assuming that we have the industrial capacity to provide the raw materials?

Add in the obscene cost of a typical undergraduate degree, and the calculation is clear. Oh, plan on paying for five years, because the typical university has structured its schedules so that it is almost impossible for all but the very dedicated student to complete the requirements of the typical degree in four years. Because they would rather spend money on new buildings and more administrators and professors who don't teach much, rather than instructors who do most of the teaching of undergraduates.

I hear that plumbers make a good living, and they don't have to deal with as much shit as the typical undergraduate does!

27 The funny thing about this is how the universities are starting to react. The problem isn't that college is increasingly a miserable experience where students learn little, spend a lot and get to experience being torn down as a functional individual and rebuilt as a glassy-eyed progressive drone, it's that "DEI" is too divisive and they need to pivot to "belonging."

Higher education serves one or both of two purposes:
1. Education for its own sake. Expand your horizons. Learn about the world and its history. Develop context for the world. It isn't about earning a living later, it's about learning for its own sake and for your own development. Learn how to be more curious, more sophisticated, to contextualize, to think.
2. Training for productive work, to learn the skills needed to make a living.

Modern American colleges provide neither. You learn *nothing* at college. You learn no history, no philosophy, no skills, no context, nothing. You get indoctrinated into precisely *one* worldview that also happens to be extraordinarily destructive. The curious are run out on a rail and those looking to develop skills achieve nothing. Oh, and it will cost you as much as a house.

He is all of 23. As another example: I know a 23 yo young man that was drifting through bar tending jobs - going nowhere - until I nudged him to think about what is important. He recently got a perfect gig for himself working on radio and power line towers. In a couple of years his experience base will be rock solid and he too will be making some approaching 6 figures.

42 Bill Maher had a couple of professors on his show about a month ago. They were discussing how colleges made a fundamental shift 10-15 years ago. The shift was towards treating students like customers instead of students. So since the customer is always right, that is the new focus. Professors are just front line employees whose goal now is to make the customer happy. So now the lunatics do run the asylum but it’s by design.

I hadn’t thought of that before but it makes a lot of sense. And at its core the colleges didn’t go crazy far left. The kids did and the colleges adapted to cater to their customers wishes.

44 There's another problem with STEM that is becoming increasingly clear although it was also entirely predictable.

What need does America for chemists and physicists and engineers? It has some need, of course, but that need is shrinking. Outside of purely theoretical work, STEM graduates need work, and that means they need industries to go work in. We're growing STEM professionals at a far greater rate than they can be absorbed by our remaining industrial base.

The industrial base is growing slowly (finally, and thanks in large part to Trump's policies and China's decline), but I strongly suspect that a lot of the STEM graduates are going to have a hard time finding work. We're not as lopsided as places like Red China where people with earned masters degrees or PhDs in the sciences end up working for the Chinese equivalent of Uber Eats, but we're not in great shape on the demand side for STEM people.

Your family can be to the right of Louis the XIV and your kids can *still* come out as communist drones. The odds of survival are better with a firm family grounding, but those odds are by no means guaranteed. This is worse for girls who seem to be much more easily trapped, but it is also a serious problem generally.

It's because the professors are bribing them for sex with easy grades, access to jobs after graduation, and often cold hard cash in the form of grant money and stipends. Make no mistake. This is the way it's done.

64 Imagine a work environment in which the greatest intellectual challenge one faces is to impress a bunch of 19-year-old, pimply-faced undergraduates of one's intellectual superiority.

And yet, time and time again, the professors and administrators lose that argument. Remember Evergreen University, where students took staff hostage as part of their demands for...whatever nonsensical lefty crap they wanted? Good times...

https://youtu.be/Msfsp5Ofz4g

Or a more recent "anti-racist" protest there...I love the black queer dude talking at the end, and how mindlessly and automatically he appends "black students most affected" on the end of statements...it's not even conscious any more, just a reflex.

For technical degrees college is the path and well worth it in the long haul especially for licensed professions such as CPAs or civil engineering. To make money he also picked up a teaching degree. He is going to go for a performance masters with thoughts of a doctorate under consideration. 133 I just watched a presentation on ESG by a group of first year interns. It was largely what they've been told and thought people wanted to hear- and therein lies the problem. This generation is far too unwilling or able to think for themselves, resolve facts and make material, courageous argument. I completely tore it apart with a few simple questions about returns vs other strategies, material results of specific efforts, earnings for those companies vs other lines, profitability and general willingness by investors to participate in those efforts.

It went down in flames. Predictably.

Stop doing what you think people want you to do, or pathos compelled you to do without any intellectual of factual basis.

The worshipping of teachers is the creation of teachers. They instilled love of themselves into their students, and their students have walked away using their best experiences with teachers as some kind of standard for how teachers operate.

Most teachers are bored, barely competent, and hardly do the minimum required. They're easily replaced because they are largely just babysitters with most of the learning happening within the student's own efforts.

183 I think a few things are in play here;

1) Like so many things (maybe due our Democrat-inspired economic collapse) education is reverting to the mean.
"College isn't for everyone." is probably more true now than it's ever been. If you're set on borrowing $200K to get a degree BA, oh, even in something legit like the Art of Ancient Greece. You're too stupid to be in college. Heavy debt, low employment prospect is no way to go, son.

2) Everything legit, even STEM fields are getting crowded because of high numbers of graduates and even more crowded because of companies importing competition.

3) Economic collapse and shrinking industry. Yep, the people who most need an expanding, roaring economy voted it away in favor of Biden's Third World Rollercoaster. The more unemployed grads with good, useful degrees that people see unemployed, the less sense college makes.

4) Racism and selective discrimination against Asians and Whites. The demographic sweet spot for college attendance is Middle and Upper Class Asian and White families/children. And these two groups are now being actively dissuaded from attending various colleges.

I'm sure there's more.

I was in college during the mid-aughts, and I got to watch it change in real time. It was spooky. When I started, my college was *extremely* left-wing. It was the default state. Everyone was a commie and assumed everyone else was. Upon learning that I wasn't, it was a curiosity though there was very little hostility. None from my fellow students, and only from one professor. The place was a den of communist bullshit, but it was also largely tolerant. I was a dissident and it was fine. I doubt I changed many minds, but I wasn't victimized because of it.

Then 2007 happened and Obama's rise began in earnest in February of 2008. Everything chilled. Virtually overnight, the environment became more hard-edged. He wasn't even the nominee yet, but it was like some invisible signal had spread: this was the time to crack down. This is the ascendancy and all who question it must be suppressed. The entire atmosphere changed that spring.

190 any ex-girlfriend or other jealous female can ruin your life with an unsupported allegation.

Related: Scotland is now removing the right to a jury trial for certain sexual offenses.

Scottish juries weren't convicting enough people for these offenses, you see, so the cases will be handled solely by judges, who know that they are supposed to get a high conviction rate.

The Magna Carta had a good run, but it is now obviously obsolete.

I'm actually sympathetic to the "card everyone, make no exceptions" policy. It removes any interpersonal awkwardness. Don't make the poor bastard make a split decision based on something utterly stupid and arbitrary and then hang the sword of damocles over his head of some undercover LCB agent (or whatever your state has) that can shut their whole damn franchise down and get him fired because he sold a six-pack to an undercover agent who "looks under 40" by some top secret metric.

202 I didn't graduate college because I can't pass a math or science course to save my soul, but I am so glad I did what I did in the late '60s. I majored in history, and there were two courses we were required to take: American history and Western Civ. My Western Civ instructor was old school. He probably got his Ph.D. prior to or just after WW II. He taught Western Civ as something to be proud of, that we Westerners were so lucky to be born into a successful, progressive era. But the rot was already settling into my American history professor. Even back then, I knew America was not perfect and we'd made a lot of mistakes along the way, but in the long run, the positive outweighed the negative. But not Wild Bill. In hid view, the negative far overshadowed whatever good America had produced.

Fortunately, my other professors stuck to what they had been hired to teach, not some socialistic garbage. But I suspect my age group was fortunate enough to experience that lack of political activism. The late '60s were when the teachers and professors who had trained before the war were retiring in , giving way to new ways of thinking.

This (and other things) has led to the large and growing disparity between male and female enrollment, causing massive problems (mostly for women) in dating and relationships. Typically, women want to date/marry men more financially successful than they are...but with women being about 60% of college student currently, that's impossible.

I do not doubt this. It's just a recipe for teachers to get run down and stop caring.

It's not an attack on their character, but just an observation. Most don't care that much. It's always for a variety of reasons (exhaustion, simple lethargy, oppressive regulation that dictates how and what they teach like Common Core or standardized testing, etc.), but that's mostly an indictment, in my mind, of the entire model of teaching that America has embraced for more than a century.

I actually learned how to program in COBOL when I was in High School. They had a vocational school I went to for 4 periods every day that offered courses in computer programming and machine bookeeping. This was in the late 70's. We created a flowchart of what the program was supposed to do. Wrote it up and then used keypunch machines from the 40's to put the program onto keypunch cards. Then ran the deck of cards through a reader and out spat my program on a fan fold printer. Good times.

I'd go with Penn in any case, because Cusack hasn't been relevant in Hollywood for at least 20 years, doing virtually nothing but direct-to-video D-list action films in that time. Cusack is a yapping chihuahua pissing all over his owner's Hermes handbag while she carries him into Starbucks.

Penn has the funniest trajectory because he was dedicated to the image of Putin pre-2016 when the left had no real problem with the guy, and he was in the middle of making a big documentary supporting and defending the Russian president when Trump got elected.

Penn didn't change a thing about the direction or tone of the documentary and released it sometime in 2017-2018, and it got panned just so hard. This is a guy who made a hagiographic documentary about Hugo Chavez.

In many states (and Florida, where I used to live, is one), if you sell alcohol to a minor, it's not the store that gets hit with the penalty, it's the clerk. You can be fined a massive amount of money that you have no hope of ever paying on a retail wage, and sent to prison.

The risk that anybody is an undercover cop wearing a butt-ton of makeup (and yes, they do that) simply isn't worth taking.

Like medicine, the government controls "science," who gets to participate and where. And as far as the trades, a solid education helps to manage, but more and more of urban construction, remodeling and repair will be done by work crews working off the books & and GCs/builders getting the contracts and finders' fees.

The service economy and 'plants' - growing, distributing, etc. - are the future for the average & investors.

There should be a single common age for adulthood. None of this "15 to drive, 16 to smoke, 18 for a long-arm and to vote, 21 for a pistol, 26 to get off your parents insurance" bullshit.

Cultures around the world evolve to draw a hard line of "this is when childhood ends, this is when adult responsibility begins". By muddying the waters, I believe we have contributed to the "endless childhood" mentality a lot of people have.

313 On Thursday the Supreme Court explained, courts should apply a more stringent test in which the CWA applies to a particular wetland only if it blends or flows into a neighboring water that is a channel for interstate commerce.

Alito pointed to the text of the CWA, emphasizing that the law’s use of the term “waters” generally refers to relatively permanent bodies of water such as lakes and rivers. But when the law is read as a whole, Alito continued, it is clear that some “adjacent” wetlands will also qualify as “waters of the United States.” This means, he wrote, that wetlands that are entirely separate from traditional bodies of water will not qualify. But the CWA will apply, Alito concluded, to wetlands that are “as a practical matter indistinguishable from waters of the United States” because they have a “continuous surface connection” with a larger body of water, “making it difficult to determine where the ‘water’ ends and the ‘wetland’ begins.”

315 I have the equivalent of two bachelors degrees, one in liberal arts and one in STEM. I recall two professors who tried to lord it over the students intellectually. One was a philosophy prof who liked to try to separate students from their Christian faith, and the other was a math prof who would, most days, begin class with a two minutes hate on Trump. Then instead of teaching us the material, he would just demonstrate how easy it was for him to do the example problems.

The rest seemed to be people who were excited to share their knowledge and experience with us students. I liked those professors.

Problems won't surface in engineering until the laws of physics are ignored, then reality will become a real bitch.

Woke ain't gonna cut it.

317 My son doesn't want to enroll for his sophomore year in college after struggling as a freshman. Turns out that during covid remote learning, he and his classmates didn't actually learn anything for 2 years and they are woefully unprepared for studying engineering, math and science.

318 The case centered around Michael and Chantall Sackett, two Idaho residents whom the EPA prohibited from building a home near a wetland years ago, citing the Clean Waters Act (CWA) of 1972.

Ruling was unanimous 9-0 decision

319 A unanimous Supreme Court on Thursday gave a 94-year-old Minneapolis woman a new chance to recoup some money after the county kept the entire $40,000 when it sold her condominium over a small unpaid tax bill.

The justices ruled that Hennepin County, Minnesota violated the constitutional rights of the woman, Geraldine Tyler, by taking her property without paying “just compensation.”

324 "So what the hell is the point of going to college for most kids?"

I am one of a couple hundred experts in a specific field, globally; peers often don't know my name but ALL of them know my work. A few here probably do as well and when I fuck up big, sometimes it makes MSM reporting. I have a big 'ole pile of fancy degrees, and I will be honest - there are very few worthwhile things I learned in all of the years it took to get them that I couldn't have just fucking learned on my own (being a perpetual student) or through mentoring on the job. Nobody gives a fuck where I went to school, or for what.

It drives me nuts wondering what else I could have accomplished. A decade of my life was wasted navigating through a higher ed system that had devolved into a dumbed-down checklist for talent-less NPC's. Now that they've fully collapsed it into a woke dumpster fire it's even worse. I'm not making the same mistake with my kids - we are telling it like it is early and often and will support helping them grow into a career in a more productive way.

More than $15k can be earned online by performing straightforward tasks from home. In the previous month, I got $18376. Even a young child may do this job and make money because it is so simple to complete and has higher pay than typical office occupations. Everyone needs to try this task by using the information on this page. www.Richepay.com
