Don't get me wrong: I'm aware of Britain's 800 years of colonization of Ireland. But Ireland isn't even part of NATO. If we wanted to insult Great Britain like this, we could have just changed the Constitution to make Obama El Presidente for Life.Joe Biden said he traveled to Northern Ireland last month "to make sure the Brits didn't screw around" with the region's peace process -- a blunt take that drew gasps from U.K. and unionist politicians. The remarks, contained in a White House transcript of the U.S. president's remarks at a Democratic Party fundraiser, clash with his carefully worded speech April 12 in Belfast marking the 25th anniversary of the U.S.-brokered Good Friday peace accord. Biden started his four-day visit throughout the island of Ireland in the Northern Irish capital, where tensions over post-Brexit trade rules have torn apart the region's unity government. According to the transcript, Biden told party supporters at a private New York residence that he had visited Belfast "to make sure they weren't -- the Brits didn't screw around and Northern Ireland didn't walk away from their commitments." Those words drew predictable fire from the Democratic Unionists, the main pro-British party in Northern Ireland. The DUP has spent the past year blocking the revival of a cross-community government with the Irish republican Sinn Féin party in protest against trade rules that make it easier for Northern Ireland to trade with the Republic of Ireland, an EU member, than with the rest of the U.K. Power-sharing between British unionists and Irish nationalists was the central objective of the Good Friday deal. "It's unbelievable and frightening to think this man is the leader of the free world," said Sammy Wilson, who criticized Biden's remarks as both hostile to unionists and politically incoherent. "If you believe that there should be a special relationship between the U.S. and U.K., then at least show us some respect." Even the leader of Northern Ireland's middle-ground Alliance Party, Naomi Long, was taken aback when told of Biden's remarks. "Oh dear," she said, before drawing a distinction between such "Brit-bashing" rhetoric versus Biden's practical help, particularly his appointment of an economic envoy, Joe Kennedy III, to promote increased U.S. investment in Northern Ireland.Biden's comments also provoked infighting among Conservatives in the UK, because the "commitments" Biden spoke of are impacted by Brexit. Biden's comments suggest that the UK should ignore Brexit. Something that Establishment-oriented Tories agree with, and more nationalist Tories don't. Biden has only one move: lowest-of-the-lowbrow ethnic pandering. He must think that this kind of Erin Go Bragh appeal is still working class political dynamite, because his galloping dementia causes him to believe it's still nineteen fifty-five.

That is on social issues and a large part of it was the involvement of those mega corps locating their hqs in Ireland (has the lowest corporate biz tax in the EU (or at least did) and the demands of the EU. Corporations demanded changes in Irish social affairs that were compatible with their employees' cosmopolitan wishes and the EU demanded changes to erase Irish identity in order to promote Euroworld.

What threats? All that I've heard about so far is Zelensky's angry rant during what was supposed to be a closed door meeting with his own advisors. Or in other words, something that wouldn't have reached Hungarian ears absent a leak of the meeting transcript. Yes, it was a stupid thing for him to suggest even under those circumstances. But I've seen nothing to indicate that Ukraine has actually told Hungary "Stop, or we blow up the pipe."

If the invasion were resisted like the island hopping ones, losses would have been near total even among civilians. Also with the virtual ending of imports by then, starvation of the populace would have started quickly and the longer the resistance the worse it would get.

Little more complicated than that. That pipelines in question go through Ukrainian territory and a sovereign state at war has the right to shut it off if they so desire.
That per se is not an attack on Hungary recognizable under international law or Nato's Article V as the pipeline does not have extraterritorial status.

Japan was almost uniquely vulnerable to firebombing, and it got the job done. It was not a single, brutal event that the Japanese government could hide behind, but it was more devastating.
And by then the wolf packs had *finally* been ordered to ignore Japan's paper navy and go hard at the merchant marine. They were on the brink of starvation - both food an energy. An invasion would not have lasted long before the state failued.
All stuff we learned well after the ended it with nukes. No apologies.

Absolutely. Even though we learned after the war that we probably wouldn't have to exterminate one island after the other to achieve victory, that's irrelevant. Every day of that war, American men were dying. Ending it even one day sooner was worth it.
Not to mention that the Soviets actually landed on Hokkaido and if we hadn't nuked Japan and ended the war, it probably would have ended up partitioned, with the north held by the communists.

Most of Japan at the time had one or two story wooden structures with, um straw (tatami matt) floors - they went up like match sticks with very little effort. Jellied gas or air burst fuel bombs would have devastated the industrial cities of Japan. They would have hung on for months, sure, but I doubt that actual invasion and occupation of that nation, having lived there, was ever going to be necessary.

We'd been doing that for years. A limited number of cities like Hiroshima and Nagasaki were preserved from bombing just for demo use on A-Bombs, and I think one was reserved for its Temples. The rest were bombed early and often.

I agree with Patton - if we had had any backbone what so ever at the end of WWII - the Soviets would still be eating cold potato soup in frozen lands right now - forget their occupation of the northern Islands of Japan - they couldn't hold a railroad in Siberia at the end of WWII without $$ and materials from the Allies. Broke, drunk and stupid is no way to hold territories, especially ones that required expensive patrolling of waters of the Kursk seaway.

Kyoto was held off-limits to bombing because it was the origin point of Japanese history and their greatest cultural treasure. We were willing to bomb it (had plans and whatnot), but not unless we absolutely had to. And the Japanese never forced the issue by putting major industry there.

I don't think that's Putin's goal at all, though he wouldn't mind it if it happened. He just doesn't want them in his face.
His real goal is what he has said it was. Ukraine is supporting Nazi ideas, and using it to persecute ethnic Russians. The West is helping them, so he is going to incorporate those Russians in Russia proper (and he's done a big chunk already) and turn away from the West and trade with the rest of the world.

However, nukes don't take land. You need infantry and tanks and stuff to do that. And once yours are in contact, you can't drop nukes any more since you get your own men too.
