15 yrs, $BILLIONS, not a mile of track & running out of money - what am I?Good morning. I have been thinking lately about some things that are wonky according to this definition:

Mentally unbalanced; crazy.I do not intend to insult all wonks, as a class, with the definitions above. But some wonks are definitely involved in these kinds of wonky projects. Infrastructure Take a look at the photo above. The section of construction shown has looked pretty much like that for months. Last week, in this space, we talked about the California High Speed Rail people deciding to go ahead and build the rail line through a flood plain even though parts of it had sunk up to 24 feet. A construction site, along with big vehicles and other equipment, flooded in March. But as noted in the piece linked above, that is only the beginning of the problems with this project. The photo shows a section of construction in Fresno that stayed above the floods in March. But where is the progress? Poetry corner:

$14 trillion reparations bill: A group of prominent Democrats are calling for $14 trillion to be paid as reparations to the descendants of slaves. The bill was introduced by Missouri Rep. Cori Bush, who said: "The United States has a moral and legal obligation to provide reparations for the enslavement of Africans and its lasting harm on the lives of millions of Black people." I'm on board with reparations. At least, I think it'd be better to do a big reparations shebang--cut checks and call it a day--than the strange sort of slow-drip reparations plans we see in liberal institutions. Like, yes, $14 trillion is a lot of money. But if the alternative is Robin DiAngelo trainings till the end of time and making the MCAT illegal and allowing people to self-ID as doctors because that's more equitable, then $14 trillion is a bargain. But here's why reparations (I'm serious, a good idea!) will never happen: simply cutting checks to the descendants of slaves means shuttering all the thousands of racial justice nonprofits that serve as an employment program for America's white grad students. . .So, what do you think?

My connection was wonky. We had storms yesterday, my VPN which says it's connecting from Phoenix (I can change it, but who cares), seemed to be the problem, but then this morning my machine was turned off, Windoze was, again, trying to get me to "upgrade" to Windoze Eleventy, and then my VPN said I needed to "repair" it. So I did, and when the pooter rebooted, McAfee said it was offering me to "keep" an already installed super duper internet security thing... even though I have TRIED my damnedest to uninstall McAfee and all its works.
So yeah, wonky.

As you well know though, all those pickemup trucks are either A. smelly diesels, or 2., old and spewing burnt oil.
All of which is bad for vineyards. Oberkommandant Newsome doesn't want all those pickemup trucks anywhere near his vineyards.

They want to get something up and running, and the Central Valley is flat, and lacks politically powerful people who can block right of ways.
After that, they can drill two huge tunnels through mountains to get from the Central Valley to the Bay Area and to Los Angeles, with unknown costs.
Also, the HSR is supposed to terminate in San Francisco (not Oakland, like the transcontinental railroad), so they are going have to run HSR tracks right through the middle of Atherton, the wealthiest community in the United States (lots of Silicon Valley billionaires live there). People in Atherton melt down when someone proposes putting up an apartment building - they'll be hiring the most expensive attorneys in the United States to block the right of way for HSR for generations to come.

Part of NYC's solution is to establish retail watch groups to report live information to other retailers and NYPD? If they aren't actually going to stop or prosecute thieves, this service can only be of use to other thieves. Last I checked, the California "High Speed Rail" was going to go between Bakersfield and Fresno, two destinations that no one outside of an old Buck Owens or Merle Haggard song has ever needed to travel between - and all those guys already own their own pickup trucks.

I've long thought one way to deal with our current corruption is if "right wing" judges allowed personal lawsuits to proceed against office holders/bureaucrats.
Yes the higher courts would over turn it. But...for example imagine if the parents in TN personally sued what the state agency employees that were working with the tranny killer?
If Alex Jones can be sued for a brazillion dollars for talking about a silly conspiracy theory how much penalty should there be for stirring a mentally ill person onto a killing rampage?

Like Captain David Dorn's family. How much anguish must the feel, having heard protesters need "space to destroy," and other such sentiments?

Let's face it the California high speed rail project is dead, it just doesn't realize that it is dead yet. The State can't put anymore money into it because it has a crippling budget deficit of over $30 billion and all outside investors have abandoned the project. Plus even if the State of CA issued some more bonds for the project no one would buy them.

Let's face it the California high speed rail project is dead, it just doesn't realize that it is dead yet. The State can't put anymore money into it because it has a crippling budget deficit of over $30 billion and all outside investors have abandoned the project. Plus even if the State of CA issued some more bonds for the project no one would buy them.

The "This is why we can't have nice things" video mentions that Germany and Canada build projects much faster (and without deaths of workers) than the United States does because the USA has the NEPA act (National Environmental Policy Act) which slows projects down.
Well, he's outright wrong about Canada. We are so mired (and stuck) in environmental policy requirements that we can't get anything built anywhere near on time, on budget, or without it getting cancelled mid-build. Everything is a series of legal challenges going to a Provincial Supreme Court, or a Federal one. If the challenge gets shut down, the opposing environmental group just launches another one, or destroys construction equipment, or protests (or all of the above) and you're mired again.
Oil and Gas companies are now avoiding expanding or building out any drilling or pipeline infrastructure in Canada because it isn't just difficult, but nigh-impossible to achieve anything and be profitable. Their attitude is: "We'll go where our skills are needed by nations still needing energy. Call us if you come to your senses."

The adoption of Bitcoin via the Chivo wallet on the Lightning Network so the whole banking problem of "no banks outside of the cities" can be solved via peer-to-peer networking is revolutionary. It may affect the big banks the way cell phones and internet affected big TelCom and Telex business. I am not sure of the mega-prisons, since something that big is pretty much run by the inmates, but they claim the murder rate has plummeted.

Thank for all of the prayers. I haven't been up to posting or commenting for the last two weeks, but I truly appreciate the love of the horde. Yes, Mrs. Farmer has suffered from depression for 20 years, but I don't think that's the issue. The issue is that I did not treasure her as I should have, that I increased her burdens when I should have lightened them, and that I was an oblivious lout. I think she watched her mother die terribly, after 60 years with an abusive jerk and couldn't stand the thought of the same for herself (I don't think I've ever been abusive, but I've certainly been insensitive). I'm working on being a better man for her, and for me. I've refocused on my health (why should she be stuck with a fat slob who has to wear crocs and can't help out?) And I'm trying to return to being the fit, fun, playful, and romantic marine she married. Writing this is very difficult for me, but I feel deeply friendship with many of you, and feel like I owe you answers. I appreciate your continuing prayers and will try to update as I can.

We had family on either side of the war between the states, to say I find the reparations chatter repulsive is putting it lightly. That guy in the Tampa video is right in the age range sweet spot to have been totally messed up by the Great Society - which was reparations by the way. Construction started while I still had a learners permit, it has remained under construction ever since, more than 50 years. There are at least 2 generations of hiway workers that were on that ONE Project Site for their entire careers, now drawing retirements, with their grandchildren now working there.
My ancestors dug the frikken Erie Canal in 8 years, in between planting/harvests, and in the winter. Americas 1st Super Highway. They walked 40 miles to the job site the 1st year, earned 25cents per day, cash money(which was in VERY short supply in those days) but learned that a man with a mule earned $1 day, next season when they went they rode mules, with a spare behind each, found acquaintances without a mule, paid them double what the canal would have, 50cents per day, and profited themselves 50 cents per day for the mules. Great Pride was taken in how many more miles per month one crew could dig vs the others. NOW? Great pride is taken in how long a job can be dragged out, Politicians campaign on how much will be spent, not on how much accomplished.

In the intro to the Tom Cruise movie "Interview with the Vampire", you can see me driving the opposite way of Cruise, only took six takes. Traffic stopped completely each time.
The bridge towers LEAN, are not straight up/down, you can really see how much from the Presidio looking north, in line with the roadway. Still holds it up though. I don't believe the Oakland Bridge will last anywhere near as long...and it costs hundreds of times more, and took much much longer to construct.
