Biden Flinches on Debt Limit
(Though Doctors Say It Might Have Just Been a Transient Neurological Event)

Via Katie Pavlich, Biden seemed to back down from his prior statements that he would rather plunge the country into an unprecedented default rather than accept any budget cuts.

Speaking to reporters after an event in New York Wednesday afternoon, President Joe Biden indicated he's willing to push aside his demands for a "clean" debt ceiling increase and negotiate spending cuts with lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

"Do you feel more optimistic about a deal today that you did yesterday?" a reporter asked.

"Sure," Biden responded, adding that he wants to look at specific spending cuts Democrats and Republicans can agree on.

But he also threatened to become a tyrant and rule without consulting Congress:

But Tuesday night, Biden also refused to rule out taking unilateral action to raise the debt limit.

In April Republicans passed legislation lifting the debt limit by $1.5 trillion while also capping federal spending at 2022 levels. In addition, the bill claws back billions in unused pandemic relief funding. The White House says they want to avoid a debt default. Republicans have passed a bill doing exactly that.

Until yesterday, the White House indicated they were willing to default with hopes Republicans would take the political blame and again demanded the debt limit be lifted without spending cuts attached.

Biden is claiming that he can raise the debt limit on his own authority, despite the Constitution making Congress the branch with the power to appropriate moneys and direct how they will be spent.

Joe Biden had a meeting with Republican and Democratic leaders about the debt ceiling on Tuesday, but they did not come to any agreements and there was no new movement in the negotiations, apart from Biden finally getting off his duff, out of the basement, and meeting with them.

As my colleague Bob Hoge explained:

McCarthy has offered a budget proposal that would trade spending cuts for an increased borrowing limit, but Biden has shown little interest in negotiating. The president has his own budget proposal: a $6.9 trillion behemoth that would spend $1.8 trillion more than the government would take in. He claims that massive new taxes would make up the difference and even lower the deficit.

In other words, Biden wants to keep on spending like it's going out of style, despite how that spending has already led to record inflation and crushing the pocketbooks of Americans. The claim that somehow massive new taxes will enable him to continue to spend is madness. Once again, if he was trying to drive us off a cliff, what would he be doing differently? Not a heck of a whole lot.

After the meeting, Biden took a few questions from reporters and revealed just how delusional he truly is on the subject. A reporter asked about Biden making any budget cuts in what he was proposing, saying House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had not gotten any answers from him about any cuts. Biden got mad that the reporter had the temerity to ask such a question and snapped at her.

Biden claimed that he'd given McCarthy a specific answer, but said to the reporter, "You didn't listen either, so why should I even answer the question?" Translation: he didn't have an answer, he wasn't proposing any cuts. It's his budget, it's up to him to propose cuts, not McCarthy. All Biden did was insist that he had cut the deficit, "We cut the deficit by $160 billion! Billion! B-I-L-L-I-O-N."

Biden's already been hit with a "bottomless Pinocchio" for his constant lying about cutting the deficit from the Washington Post.

See Nick Arama at RedState for even the Propaganda Outlet the Washington Post repeatedly calling Biden a liar on this point. His budgets were fake. Most budgets are, but his were faker than usual. Rather than shrinking the deficit, they increased it.

Even the Washington Post feels compelled to call him out on these serial lies.

And yet this demented rapist and traitor keeps telling them.

Biden is claiming that he has the power to issue government debt on his own authority, making himself a tyrant unanswerable to Congress, stealing from Congress its most foundational power of appropriating money.

The leftwing lunatic Lawrence Tribe, who is also demented and senile and deranged like Biden, keeps arguing that it's time to just pull off the mask and go full tyrant.

The amendment, ratified in the aftermath of the Civil War, is better known for its provisions addressing citizenship and equal protection under the law. It has been used by the Supreme Court to mandate racial integration in schools in Brown v. Board of Education and same-sex marriage recognition in Obergefell v. Hodges.

It also includes this clause, which some legal scholars see as relevant to today's showdown: "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned."

Default, they argue, is therefore unconstitutional and Biden would have a duty to effectively nullify the debt limit if Congress won't raise it, so that the validity of the country's debt isn't questioned.

The man putting the debt into question is Joe Biden himself. He should invoke the 14th Amendment to overrule his insistence that he can continue spending us into a full-on depression.

30 What is the most baldly, transparently political things in my lifetime was the Washington Post having a wildly inaccurate and bigoted "presidential lies" feature for the entire Trump administration and then shutting it down when Biden takes office.

I liked that feature, just not how they were using it. They called things lies that were just a difference of opinion, they called things lies that were true but they didn't like. But having a feature calling out politicians on their lies is a good thing, its what newspapers are supposed to do.

But they stopped when the biggest liar to ever walk the earth, even worse than Bill Clinton because he is just terrible at it... yeah.

The difference between the debt limit law and regular budgeting is literally Treasury would have no authority to borrow money. When it is something like 25 percent of federal spending (fed revenue is about 1.3 trillion short of what it spends of about 6 trillion bucks , it would have to prioritize how to administer cuts to spending.

You can try it yourself.

We could drop the pretense of sending the military to the border, but having them work in the background in support of the Border Patrol.

We could establish large, uncomfortable camps for the illegals, staffed by the military, with the option that they can leave the country and go home at any time they choose.

Finally, and I'm not recommending this, we could invade the first 3 miles of Mexico, and set up the camps there. That way, we avoid the problems with having the military operating on US soil.

82 ""The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.""

This does not make the debt limit unconstitutional at all (as though this has to be explained to anyone with two functioning brain cells, but in case anyone wants to argue with you. The Executive Branch could easily pay all the debt service out of incoming funds, they'd just have to prioritize that over any other spending. So shut down all unnecessary programs for the duration and pay the debt. The problems resulting are twofold: one, the actual response is 100% political (barriers in front of the war memorials in DC and National Parks), and spending actually continues during the shutdown, with everyone getting all the money post facto that they would have gotten if there hadn't been a shutdown, so the debt limit then has to be raised. Gah!

84 Jen,

We are spending about 6.27 trillion and revenue is about 4.9 trillion or so. That makes about 1.3-1.4 trillion gap between spending and revenue. If the borrowing authority stops, then Treasury has to allocate who gets paid and who gets cut. To avoid default on bonds, interest would be paid and that means everyone from federal employees to social security people might not get a check until it is worked out.

It about politics and nothing more. That's why the democrats and the gop(e) passed an omnibus bill that funds the government through September of this year so the incoming republican house could not touch anything but they did not not touch the debt ceiling even though they knew it was going to be an issue.

They could have upped the debt limit by couple of billion dollars but they chose not to knowing this would become a problem but both parties need this to be a disaster so they can fund raise off of it.

The television "news" industry is populated almost exclusively by the completely unimpressive, unintelligent scions of wealthy east-coast liberals, and they all went to the same 3-4 schools. They are dumb people that didn't learn anything other than where their bread gets buttered, which is licking the sweaty taint of the left for eternity. As long as someone signs their checks and they keep getting invited to the best cocktail parties so they can keep having sex with one anothers' spouses, they don't give a single solitary fuck about anything that resembles accurate reporting.

++++
He probably can. There is nothing to stop the Treasury from issuing bonds whenever and however it pleases.

There is a but, though and it's a big one: it would not be debts issued legally. That *has* to come from the House. They have to authorize it. The debt ceiling is the way they authorize it. If the Treasury issues new debt anyway in excess of the debt ceiling, it is doing so without authorization - and the 14th Amendment won't apply and it can be repudiated if desired. That is a high risk, and the market will make Treasury pay for that risk if it chooses to do so.

++++
"He" isn't willing or able to do shit, but this is still news. The ruling factions have been whipped into shape and identified their sacred calves that must not be touched. The factions that actually run the executive government have figured out what they'll negotiate on what is worth a high-risk exercise to defend (that is, where the faction leaders have the most preliminary work done to extract maximum personal benefit and empire growth). They got that done in time, so *now* they can sit down and jawbone about it.

My guess is some symbolic cuts, a lot of "reduced growth," the entire Administration wish-list, and both sides declaring victory to their respective bases and hurling pejoratives at the "opposition."

That strikes me as a desperation play to pretend that subscriber numbers are better than they are. If they do it by making it more expensive, they will lose customers. Apparently the merge is something investors were talking about. Plus, they are trying to drive subscribers to channels that have ads, v those that don't, so they can generate more revenue.
I am not certain, but it sounded like Disney may not own all of Hulu? But may just buy the rest?
They made pricing changes also.

250 "He" isn't willing or able to do shit, but this is still news.

Y'know. Failure theater.

All of that is dispersed away from the cities because of crime, bad schools, and poor governance. Even Charlotte NC is getting bad and many of the more minor cities are getting big city problems like Asheville, NC or Little Rock, Ar.

Section 4: Validity of public debt

Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

I don’t see where the “honey you can go buy a car, but don’t over spend out budget” doesn’t work.

331 Capping spending at 2022 levels is a spending "cut". And that is how the media portray it.

Huge cuts to spending, but not spending any more than we already are spending.

332 Also - Biden does this he gets impeached the next day. Don't fuck around with this.

333 They really need to stop this idiotic charade that failure to constrain TOTAL spending to match incoming revenue going forward therefore requires the US to default on their debt.

Bullshit. There are FAR more than enough revenues coming into the federal government to cover debt service. That prevents default on the debt. FULL STOP.

The executive is then tasked with determining what OTHER government spending to stop so that outgoing expenditures and incoming revenues match. That is all.

So, in other words, keep paying on the debt and "sHuTdOwN" the government as has been done NUMEROUS times before.

334 There is ZERO chance of default. None. Even if they never raise the debt limit again, ever.

The govt can still spend during the partial govt shutdown - up to the amount of revenue that they actually take in. Federal law dictates the priority of spending and interest payments on the national debt is #1 on the list - has to be paid first, because it is the only spending the Constitution specifically requires must be paid.

Interest on the debt is currently about 10% of federal revenue.

Anyone that uses the word "default" when discusses the debt ceiling is flat out LYING to you.
