Solvitur Ambulando GAINZZZ

"Don't underestimate the low-key power of walking," says this article.

I walk three miles per day, most days of the week, and I'm not alone in reaping the physiological, mental, and emotional rewards of walking. In his New Yorker article, "Why Walking Helps Us Think," journalist Ferris Jabr writes that when we go for a walk, we perform better on tests of memory and attention; our brain cells build new connections, staving off the usual withering of brain tissue that comes with age; we can actively change the pace of our thoughts by deliberately walking more briskly or by slowing down; and our attention is left to meander and observe, helping us generate new ideas and to have strokes of insight. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a single bout of moderate-to vigorous activity (including walking) can improve our sleep, thinking, and learning, while reducing symptoms of anxiety.

And doing it outdoors can compound the dividends. According to Dr. Jo Barton, Senior Lecturer of the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences at the University of Essex, you can improve your self-esteem and your mood with just five minutes of exposure to nature. Why does it work so quickly? As Barton shares, exposure to nature helps us switch from voluntary attention, which draws on our reserves of focus and energy, to involuntary attention, which requires less focus and energy. This allows us to recover from mental fatigue.

Charles Darwin, Friedrich Nietzsche, William Wordsworth, and Aristotle were all obsessive walkers, using the rhythm of walking to help them generate ideas. And while any form of exercise has been shown to activate the brain, walking is a proven creativity booster as well.

I realize a couple of those might not be on all readers' Favorites lists, but you get the idea.

Harvard writes of the five bonus benefits of walking.

1. It counteracts the effects of weight-promoting genes. Harvard researchers looked at 32 obesity-promoting genes in over 12,000 people to determine how much these genes actually contribute to body weight. They then discovered that, among the study participants who walked briskly for about an hour a day, the effects of those genes were cut in half.

2. It helps tame a sweet tooth. A pair of studies from the University of Exeter found that a 15-minute walk can curb cravings for chocolate and even reduce the amount of chocolate you eat in stressful situations. And the latest research confirms that walking can reduce cravings and intake of a variety of sugary snacks.

3. It reduces the risk of developing breast cancer. Researchers already know that any kind of physical activity blunts the risk of breast cancer. But an American Cancer Society study that zeroed in on walking found that women who walked seven or more hours a week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer than those who walked three hours or fewer per week. And walking provided this protection even for the women with breast cancer risk factors, such as being overweight or using supplemental hormones.

4. It eases joint pain. Several studies have found that walking reduces arthritis-related pain, and that walking five to six miles a week can even prevent arthritis from forming in the first place. Walking protects the joints -- especially the knees and hips, which are most susceptible to osteoarthritis -- by lubricating them and strengthening the muscles that support them.

5. It boosts immune function. Walking can help protect you during cold and flu season. A study of over 1,000 men and women found that those who walked at least 20 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, had 43% fewer sick days than those who exercised once a week or less. And if they did get sick, it was for a shorter duration, and their symptoms were milder.

The Art of Manliness, "Solivtur Ambulando: It is solved by walking."

Solvitur ambulando.

It's a Latin phrase that literally means, "It is solved by walking." Or, a little more loosely, "It is solved by walking around."

Walking? "What problems have ever been solved by walking?" you may be asking yourself.

True enough, there is hardly anything more simple and less exciting than walking. It's one of our first developmental milestones as babies, and once you take those initial toddling steps, neither you, nor those around you, take much notice of your walking ever again. If you happen to think about walking later in life, images of elderly women decked out in windsuits and circling the mall in the early morning hours may come to mind. Indeed, so unsexy is walking that our word for a person who travels by foot -- pedestrian -- is also a synonym for "dull" and "ordinary."

'Twas not always so, however. There was a time in which writers and philosophers wrote poems and paeans to the humble walk, publishing books and essays with titles such as "The Reveries of the Solitary Walker," "In Praise of Walking," and "Walking as a Fine Art." Bipedal locomotion was referred to as "the manly art of walking," and enrollment in the "noble army of walkers" was encouraged.

Did these long-dead bipedaling boosters know something that modern men do not? While walking's simplicity may seem like a mark against it, perhaps its rudimentary nature is just the thing to bring us back to life's much needed basics. Walking upright is part of what makes us human, after all, and who wouldn't benefit from getting in touch with their humanity a little more often?

...

Think of this piece as one part article, one part quote repository. Read it through in one fell swoop, or come back to it from time to time when you need some motivation to get yourself out the door.

The article provides some quotes intended to do just that:

"When I see the discomforts that ablebodied American men will put up with rather than go a mile or half a mile on foot, the abuses they will tolerate and encourage, crowding the street car on a little fall in the temperature or the appearance of an inch or two of snow, packing up to overflowing, dangling to the straps, treading on each other's toes, breathing each other's breaths, crushing the women and children, hanging by tooth and nail to a square inch of the platform, imperiling their limbs and killing the horses--I think the commonest tramp in the street has good reason to felicitate himself on his rare privilege of going afoot. Indeed, a race that neglects or despises this primitive gift, that fears the touch of the soil, that has no footpaths, no community of ownership in the land which they imply, that warns off the walker as a trespasser, that knows no way but the highway, the carriage-way, that forgets the stile, the foot-bridge, that even ignores the rights of the pedestrian in the public road, providing no escape for him but in the ditch or up the bank, is in a fair way to far more serious degeneracy." --John Burroughs, "The Exhilarations of the Road," 1895

"I have read that the Scotch once had a custom of making a yearly pilgrimage or excursion around their boroughs or cities -- 'beating the bounds,' they called it, following the boundaries that they might know what they had to defend. It is a custom that might profitably be revived. We should then know better the cities in which we live. We should be stronger, healthier, for such expeditions, and the better able and the more willing to defend our boundaries." --John Finley, "Traveling Afoot," 1917

"I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks,--who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering, which word is beautifully derived 'from idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and asked charity, under pretense of going a la Sainte Terre,' to the Holy Land, till the children- exclaimed, 'There goes a SainteTerrer,' Saunterer, a Holy-Lander. They who never go to the Holy Land in their walks, as they pretend, are indeed mere idlers and vagabonds; but they who do go there are saunterers in the good sense, such as I mean....For every walk is a sort of crusade, preached by some Peter the Hermit in us, to go forth and reconquer this Holy Land from the hands of the Infidels." --Henry D. Thoreau, "Walking," 1862

That etymology seems a little fanciful. EtymologyOnline says it probably comes from the French sauntrer, which itself is a contraction of/evolution from s'adventurer, or "take oneself out for an adventure." Which is also a nice etymology.

The "aller a la sainte-terre" etymology actually comes from one of the oldest English dictionaries.

This is the etymology given by Samuel Johnson in his great dictionary (1755):

To SAUNTER v.n. [aller a la sainte terre, from idle people who roved about the country, and asked charity under pretence of going a la sainte terre, to the holy land, or sans terre, as having no settled home]

But just because it's old doesn't mean it knows what it's talking about. My word as a Biden.

No one's sure where the word comes from so if you prefer the "Sainte-Terrer" explanation, there's no proof against it.

Thomas DeLauer talks about the benefits of simply walking, and how it was part of his 110-pound weight loss. Note he also dieted and lifted. And, based on his physique, probably added some Performance Enhancing Chicken and Broccoli into the mix.

After weeks of travel, I'm getting back into the routine of my workouts.

I figure that if I strength train 4-5 days a week, me refusing to get my eating under control will matter less. Besides, we were in bed the other night and Dolley let her hand fall to my bicep where she went, "Ooooo!"

So, that was nice.

11 I am happy to report I'm ambulatory, recovered from knee surgery (torn quad tendon).
Doing 2 miles a day now.
I feel pretty good for someone who was bedridden after surgery, then on a walker, then on a leg brace with crutches, then leg brace with a cane. Now, no leg brace, no cane. 4 flights of stairs without holding on to a bannister is good too. I told my physical therapist how I didn't gain any weight during that time, he said that's because my muscles had gone to goo.
The whole thing seems like a nightmare, the way everything went all to crap with one mis step.
I can see where those of us 29 and older can get undone by one bad fall.

22 I've always liked walking. I fell out of the habit. I am trying to get back into the habit after work. I managed to remember to go outside and walk two days this week. Next week, hopefully I will do better. It used to be daily but habits are hard to both form *and* break. I'm working on it.

I also like knowing how far I walked, so I can compare how I feel after like-for-like walks because I am mildly obsessive. I have four courses through my neighborhood mapped out, ranging from 0.5 miles to 2.0 miles.

Boy does having music in my pocket make me more inclined to do it, though.

37 When my wife and I were on our weight loss kick it was cutting out carbs, limiting caloric intake to 1200 calories per day and walking 45 minutes a day. That was it and we reliably lost 2 lbs a week.

That was 10 years ago and I have rebounded by 20 lbs. So here recently it’s been just fasting 4 days a week every other week. I do eat a can of tuna a day and maybe some nuts. I lose somewhere around 1.5 to 2 lbs a day with that method even without much walking. I suspect within 3 weeks I’ll be at my goal which more to comfortably wear size 34 pants than a particular weight (probably about 180 lbs).

Fascinating and unlike most things you've seen or thought about sumo before.

The lovely and perceptive Mrs naturalfake and I plowed right through the whole series in one night.

So, I think even you gals might enjoy it as Mrs n. was the one who wanted to see going till we finished.

73 For everyone who is religiously moving their bodies or just started (or restarted) their fitness journeys, I am over here clapping my hands for you, maybe even shouting woohoo!

Walking is so good for you. Do it! Also get your cardio in 2x a week where you elevate your heart rate, 3x for weight loss (by the way, your max heart rate is around 220-your age). I lost 50lbs and have kept it off with cardio 3x and strength training 2-3x/ week. I weigh less now than I did at 16 and became fitness instructor to the stars, which includes y’all 😀. Anytime you walk around, you are doing weight bearing exercise, but adding some weight work, no need to go nuts, improves bone density and is super important. Especially for women.

95 Cardio just kind of bores me. I do it occasionally and I don't mind it if I have something that occupies my mind. But, generally, boring. I *do*, however, do my calisthenics and weight lifting 6 mornings a week, pretty much as soon as I get up. Get the power coffee brewing (big carafe with coffee and 40 grams of various protein powders), brush my teeth (I'm a nocturnal nibbler because I wake up constantly), feed the cat, warm up, then lift. Fridays I get 63 seconds between sets so that gets my sustained heart rate up a bit.

I love jogging/running more than almost any activity in life (a few exceptions). There is nothing more peaceful than a slow 6-10 mile jog on an early Saturday morning…. The endorphin rush after the shower… awesome.

I’m in mourning (no kidding) that I can’t run now. I will endure the pain of the rehab to get back to that on a regular basis.

143 I'm having gains of the wrong kind right now. Hopefully I'll turn it around soon.

On the plus side, I have found a doctor in my new AO and philosophically we are like two peas in a pod! I hope this is a good thing. I want someone who will DISagree with me when I'm wrong.

Anyway, he quit working at the hospital when it was made clear to him that he must stop effectively treating his Covid patients. (He and his clinic partners treated thousands of Covid patients and saw how well the forbidden treatments worked first hand.)

He believes that fasting is helpful and, contrary to "official" guidelines, knows that getting adequate Vitamin D is vital for immunity, cancer protection, and mental health. (Current "official" information warns against getting sun exposure and using Vitamin D supplements.)

And he is very supportive of my desire to minimize medications.

Yay!

Where I live, the risk is virtually nil. That said, my wireless earbuds have something called "transparency mode," which is awesome. It plays your music from your phone, but also opens up the microphone and mixes the sounds of the surrounding environment into it. You can hear music and still hear what's happening around you. This is useful for walking, but absolutely *vital* in my opinion if you like to listen to music while cycling.

It is a truly great feature, and worth looking for when you buy ear buds or headphones. I've only ever seen it on bluetooth devices that also can act as headsets (e.g., they have microphones).

147 @110 Darrell Harris-It feels radical. Real tender and bruised all to hell. It was a Proximal Bicep Tendon Rupture(tore from shoulder rather than inner elbow/Distal rupture). Now that I've had the surgery done I realize the bicep muscle that was balled up in my inner elbow must have been resting on a nerve. Caused a fair amount of pain before surgery if I tried to lift something in a curling motion as light as a water bottle. Crazy part is I could go to the gym and bench press 225 no problem. Pain depended on the grip and motion.

To bulk, you need heavy weights, lots of slow reps but also a big increase in your caloric intake. Otherwise, you get what we refer to as toned. You won’t change the shape of your muscles. Those of you with round muscles keep them, those of you with long and lean keep those. But you won’t look like Mr. America either way.

170 The benefits of driving are underreported.

For instance studies show that those who have a car and can drive don't have to walk everywhere.

This allows them to perform basic tasks simply, like obtaining food and water.

One study showed that the ability to drive and obtain food saved individuals as much as 90% of their time compared to societies where people walked all day long searching for grub worms, termites and malaria infested water.

The study went on to show that while the benefits of walking could improve cognitive function, those gains were offset and surpassed by the ability to read and obtain information for much longer intervals when individuals were able to drive.

In the study, groups that walked everywhere for everything on the whole performed significantly lower on cognitive tests than those who drove places by a significant factor. Groups that walked as much as 10 miles a day died at a younger age and scored in the 80s on IQ tests compared to their driving counterparts.

Interesting stuff.

Why my dad has his done, the bone doctor came in to do a brief consult and held up the X-Rays. She said to him, "so you're in a wheelchair right now?" He said, "no." She said, "so you use a walker?" Same answer. "A cane?" Same answer. She looked absolutely horrified and turned to my mom and me for confirmation.

I know he has a ludicrous pain threshold, but the doctor took one glance at the X-Ray and assumed he was crippled, not walking around under his own power. It must've been *hell* before he got the knee replacements.

Range locals and BP say it's become a nearly constant flow, including day-time. It was a small group of women and children.

There have now been some uncomfortable encounters where the groups surround a car and won't move. Almost comically, this is done to compel the driver to call BP - who can then come and "apprehend" (LOL) them. In one case there were older males and a knife was displayed, so appropriate discreet changes in security procedures have been adopted by most range people when on this road.

Best part, had a long talk with a BP officer who was staking out one part of the road, he said *Romanians* had recently been prominent in their recent "apprehensions". Romanians. Because as those with experience or knowledge of the Cold War era will know, asylum has always been a thing for citizens of .... NATO countries.

Very spoiled, being able to walk in almost non-existent traffic, in country air.
Plus, it's a mile around the education complex, so easy to keep track.

I'd love to squeeze your's some Saturday night. Maybe we could slip out of the Movie Thread sometime, and slip into something more comfortable?

I don’t know but it’s probably from having to carry that extra weight around. The article I read was stressing the importance of exercising the calf muscles because they were very effective at burning calories.

I would love to read this, wonder if they were talking about slow and fast twitch muscle fibers.

A lot good all that running did him.

To be fair, we do fling a lot of lead around and that is considered weight training as far as I'm concerned.

226 I've been walking more. I got a dog 3 years ago, but I've finally started walking more regularly with it--20 to 40 minutes almost every day--and it has been very good for me. I've lost 10 pounds over the last few months and maybe lost 15 or 20 pounds of fat, so putting on 5 or 10 pounds of muscle. I think the walking helps my recovery from lifting weights. I'm getting close to 60, but I'm lifting as much as I ever have (only started 7 or 8 years ago) and I haven't had any injuries from lifting.

227 I’ve mainly done Olympic distance triathlon

A few years ago, I would do an informal Olympic one Saturday a month (when the quarry was warm enough for the swim). Hate the run though.

If they would have an Iron Swim and Bike, and Sprint length Run, I would be all in.

228 I suppose this includes lugging around a Solo backpack sprayer? That is my most recent "hobby"
Posted by: Kindltot

Sounds fun! It is exercise, watch your posture though. Hinging forward may add undue stress on hip joints, plus it might be tough to roll the shoulders back and down. Clasp your hands behind your back when you finish and really open your chest.

229 Getting up around 4AM for a fasted 2 hour or more walk will have you feeling as good if you hit the weights for an hour.

5AM, 90 minutes, then 20 minutes of Kettlebells, then 8 -12 rounds of heavy/double-bag. One minute planks between rounds.

Ha! We’re all different I guess. I would always dread the swim because I’m terrible in the water. I learned how to get through the water but it’s a minor miracle I never drowned. I’m an awful swimmer. The swim discipline was something I had to survive to get to the bike and run

233 Knee replacements: Wife has had 3 (same knee) 10 to 11 years apart. The last one was because she sheared the screw holding the tibial pad in place. Dr. said he hadn't seen it before.
Tuesday she goes in to have the screw she sheared *again* taken out to see if the pad actually has to be replaced.

I’m extremely interested because of my recent replacement; don’t wanna go through this again. What activity (or activities) caused the shear? Does the doc know or have a theory?

Walking is good.
Walking uphill is better.
Walking with a backpack with some weight inside is good, too.
Walking with a backpack with some weight inside uphill is even better.
Slowly increasing the weight in the backpack while walking uphill is really good.

Incrementally punishing yourself in slightly steeper measures is the way to do it. Don't blame me when your pants don't fit anymore or you have to clinch your belt to the last loop or your pants fall down.

237 Thank you Ace for this content filled Friday.

I need to try walking more. I'm still practically 29, so walking has always had connotations of decrepitude to me, and I've avoided it. But other than Ace, we aren't 29 forever, so it would probably be good practice.

More than $15k can be earned online by performing straightforward tasks from home. In the previous month, I got $18376. Even a young child may do this job and make money because it is so simple to complete and has higher pay than typical office occupations. Everyone needs to try this task by using the information on this page. www.Richepay.com
