Washington Post: Fox Has Lost NEARLY HALF of Its Viewers Overall Since Rupert Murdoch Made the Vanity-Driven, Cvck-Panic Decision to Fire Tucker Carlson

I won't quote the Washington Post, but I'll tell you who will: Breitbart, that's who.

Ratings for Fox News have dropped considerably in the wake of popular anchor Tucker Carlson departing from the network.
During its 8 p.m. hour, the network has dropped from a three million viewer average to a 1.65 million viewer average since the departure of Tucker Carlson; the hour was previously filled by Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade, which will then be filled by Fox News personality Lawrence Jones. Per the Washington Post:

The disparity was most stark on Wednesday, when Kilmeade's 8 p.m. hour received an average of 1.3 million total viewers, compared with the 3 million Carlson received a week earlier -- a decline of 56 percent. Overall, the network experienced a 45 percent viewership decline last week without Carlson in the host's chair.

Brutal.

Beyond the 8 p.m. slot, the network has also seen a sharp decline in the 25-54 demographic in the 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 9 p.m. time slots.

Fox News whistled a lively PR tune as it passed the graveyard.

The company said in a statement this week that the network will continue delivering the cable news coverage that has made it a ratings powerhouse in recent years.
"For more than 21 years, Fox News Channel has been cable news' most-watched network in all categories with more Democrats, Independents and Republicans now tuning in than either CNN or MSNBC," the company said.
"Attracting more than 50 percent of the cable news viewing audience with the top 12 programs in cable news, Fox News' powerhouse team of journalists, analysts and opinion hosts are trusted more by viewers than any other news source," it added.

Apparently not trusted by Rupert Murdoch, though.

Per Megyn Kelly, the 8pm slot has lost 47% of its viewers, and 59% of its demo viewers. Hannity is down 39% in the demo, 23% overall. Ingraham is down 24% in the demo, "almost 20%" in overall viewers.

Kelly says "panic is setting in." She says that once Fox loses to CNN and MSNBC for a full month, that will be the end of Fox.

She also suggests that anyone who wants to support Tucker should... and I don't know if I'd go this far... put the TV on CNN or MSNBC and just put it on mute.

Come on, Fox. Install Trey Gowdy as the 8pm host. You know you want to.

Nope. Completely wrong. It was *never* FNC's news coverage that made it a powerhouse. FNC's news division is largely middle-of-the-road pap. It isn't *usually* the hard-left screeching one finds on MSNBC, but it also isn't conservative. It isn't really anything. Relatively few people really cared about FNC's news division.

It was FNC's *commentary* division that made it a powerhouse - the primetime editorial shows. And those were anchored by one man: Tucker Carlson. Hannity fell years ago. Ingraham was never a powerhouse brand. Gutfeld is well-liked enough, but he was riding Carlson's coattails. The morning programs were even worse, carried by the occasional conservative like Bongino.

FNC's status had nothing to do with news and everything to do with editorials. And they wrecked that. I don't think they expected this outcome, either. I think they expected modest declines, not an outright collapse. Serves them right for misunderstanding their own value proposition.

Here's how Tucker can maximize his media presence, and NOT violate what remains of his contract with Fox.

Select five of the top-rated Conservative Hosts on other channels, or in other media. Levin, Kelly, who else?

Let Tucker rotate amongst 'em as a Guest, and they can long-form "interview" Tucker, (while really giving him half or more of their showtime). No one host gives up TOO much of their own precious face-time, but Tucker is somewhere, on some channel, every single week until freed from his Fox commitments.

This will SKYROCKET each hosts ratings in the week that Tucker is their Guest. Keeps Tucker's visibility high, in touch with current events, and etc.

And I doubt seriously that Fox's contract prohibits him from being a "Guest" on other shows, just so long as he doesn't sit on the other side of that host's desk.

More Tucker = More tears at Fox. What's not to love?

In theory, Wall Street money could prop up Fox's short-term revenue. But they have two problems, likely to come up soon:

- Tucker Carlson is going to compete with them for 2024, and likely submerge all of Fox's lesser lights.

- Wall Street is pulling money away from Outer Party concerns like Facebook and BB&B. They don't want to subsidize Ingraham to that extent, and even if they did the money will be needed for more vital purposes very soon.

Carlos Slim propped up the Times, as Bezos did with the Post, and Paul Singer did with Twitter before the Musk takeover. The Bulwark has Omidyar, and the Dispatch has Crow. Most of the Party and State TV channels will find similar billionaires or hedge funds to prop them up when their time comes. Which is soon.

But I think Fox is fucked if the Murdoch's get tired of flushing money into it. I think they'll be left to learn to code. After learning to tie their own shoes, of course.

Actually it does matter. About 53% are institutional shareholders. There is a lot held in mutual funds, etc where fund investors can now vote their shares. There are also very specific SEC Rules about filing when there are negative events such as this. Filing isn't optional and there is a lot those shareholders can do.

Tucker's not going to boost others just to stay in the spotlight, much less risk his contract at all. I haven't read his contract, so I can't say what he's going to do.

The most certain solution is this: ask for a few hundred million from an investor. Promise all of it back, plus dividends, after a set period. Expand, but not so aggressively that you need more money and stricter conditions. Take money that an investor can pull out at any time, and you're setting yourself up for betrayal like Milo did. Besides which, if he has any sense Tucker is not interested in working for billionaires. They're all under too much pressure to crush him, and he'd much rather keep all the money and especially control of Tucker Nation.

The news media is in the propaganda business, not the money-making business. It has been this way for a long time now, and most of the big news companies have oligarchs behind them, shoveling cash into the enterprise.

The entertainment media is *also* in the propaganda business, not the money-making business. They are too big to be operated as the playthings of oligarchs, though, so I am paying attention to that a bit more than the news companies. Warner is the first that might be breaking out and trying to make money rather than push The Message. It'll be interesting to watch what happens there.

Fair enough. A lot of those institutions are *not* mutual funds where investors can vote - they're Blackrock and their ilk - but if the mutual fund holders can, then yeah, I'm with you. I hope they do.

And then we can watch the SEC do nothing about it, which will also be educational. The SEC is no less corrupt than any other agency, and News Corp is a major propaganda player that serves (or at least served) a fairly valuable purpose as a foil. The SEC will let it slide.

To me, it's quite possible that Fox asked Tucker to take a haircut on his contract, and he said "What, because you're financially incompetent? FOAD." It doesn't matter: what matters is they got rid of him, and clearly underestimated exactly how much pull he would have outside the company.

Actually it does matter. About 53% are institutional shareholders. There is a lot held in mutual funds, etc where fund investors can now vote their shares. There are also very specific SEC Rules about filing when there are negative events such as this. Filing isn't optional and there is a lot those shareholders can do.

??? is this sane? Unless you have a Nielsen box (do they still have Nielsen boxes?) what does this do?

I know in the early days they would drive by houses to pick up the frequency of the superhet circuit and they could tell how you were tuned, but that was just to back up the Nielson numbers and only works for analog tuners. I guess today digital networked tuners could report back, but I doubt they are being monitored by ratings companies.

First question I have about her: but she go shoot fucking guns with Kid Rock? Great host for media shows that are on every single day. Have a profound gift to never wear out their welcome. Rush Limbaugh did that for 30 years, 4 hours a day and he only became stronger over the years. Tucker managed to pulled off the same bit of magic in the few years he was at Fox News. Jay Leno in his own way over the years did exactly the same thing. Common thread between them all? They were honest to themselves, honest to their audiences, and we're able to do it daily with grace and humor. I have watched Kayleigh McEnany on Fox off and on since she came to the network. She has yet to prove she has those qualities.

I was never fond of Sling back when I tried it. I found the interface clunky and difficult to use and the cost wasn't competitive.

If you're looking for a fully-blown cable replacement delivered over the internet, DirecTV Stream is a good one. Not cheap, though.

But if you're looking for *most* of a cable replacement delivered over the internet, there's a better option: Philo. Philo is a cable-like service and is essentially a mid-tier cable package. The wrinkle is that it's a mid-tier cable package *without* sports, news or local channels. It's exclusively the entertainment channels. As a result, it costs less than half as much (about $25/month, I think).

Sure, someone does, but I doubt that is in the ratings. Rating are big business and Nielsen has the market because they claim to be unbiased. It is just like political polling where if you only monitor people with networked TVs you are not getting a valid count.

The ratings have to be valid because those numbers are used in advertising contracts, bonuses for talent, etc. I just doubt that anyone figured out how to get a fair count with so many different platforms for people to use to watch.

I looked into that, but Mom wants to watch all of her network shows, and husband wants to watch sports, so it was a no-go. We had Fubo for a while, but they got rid of some channels we liked and then jacked up the price. So we're on Sling for now.

Depends on the platform. DirecTV Stream - at least back when I used it, which was when it was called "DirecTV NOW" and then "ATT TV NOW" - it had an opt-in/opt-out to Nielsen measurement in the app settings. That was a full cable-replacement service, though, so still in what Nielsen typically looks at.

The point is that it's a good option if that's what you want. If you don't care about (or actively dislike) sports and news channels but your wife loves HGTV and you like watching the Game Show Network after you get home, it's a great choice for you.

For me, I *did* cut the cord. I have zero regrets. But some people actually like stuff that they can only get on cable or are just wading into their own personal boycotts or rebellions. If you're one of those people, it's nice to have those choices.

(I know, I know, as if it's even happening now, but I present the previous thread as evidence that someone is on the ground even at Fox). Reporters have to live in DC and chase down lawmakers in hallways and go to wherever they go to view emails and documents that show nefarious deeds.

There are lots of fine talking heads on YouTube, but where are they going to get the stories? The only indie journalist I can think of who gets original stories on DC is... John Solomon?

The other pillar of cable broadcasting was Fox News and Fox News completely screwed themselves in the last few weeks. Lose those two and why would anybody want to subscribe to a cable package? Cable is dead. The only question is where they going to bury the corpse?

The Ford pardon worked because Ford wasn't an outgoing President, and there was no way the Rats could force him out without reneging on whatever agreement they made. Besides which, if the Rats insisted on prosecuting Nixon beyond the resignation, people might have realized exactly how weak the Nixon case was.
