Vice Media is preparing to file for bankruptcy, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Why it matters: Vice was once considered one of the most successful news startups of all time when investors valued it at $5.7 billion in 2017. Now it's struggling to sell itself for more than $1 billion.
Details: The company has taken steps to file for possible bankruptcy if it cannot secure a buyer in the next few weeks, sources told Axios.
Vice is still engaged in talks to sell itself, either in full or in pieces, two sources told Axios. A sale would prevent bankruptcy, but finding a buyer willing to pay more than $1 billion for the company has been challenging, as has finding one willing to take on the company's debt load.

Things went sour once investors began to realize that Vice's growth was slowing, which made it hard to justify the massive valuations it received from investors over the years.
At its peak in 2017, Vice's investors believed it was worth $5.7 billion. The company reportedly missed its $800 million revenue target that year by more than $100 million.
The following year, Disney wrote down $157 million of its initial $400 million investment in Vice. Months later, Vice's newly-appointed CEO Nancy Dubuc laid off 10% of Vice's staff amid a broader restructuring.

Assuming the same ratio holds (and that could be a bad assumption, depending on when Disney bought in and what the company's valuation was at that time), it implies an enterprise value of $3.48 billion based on the previously-assumed $5.7 billion valuation.

Yet they can't sell it for even a billion dollars. Something is wrong in the valuation assessments here. I suspect Disney didn't write it down nearly enough, and is playing accounting games.

The only way a "news" website can produce revenue is via display ads and membership subscriptions. There is no reality in which those revenue streams can consistently produce 100 million in revenue, let alone anything north of a billion.

It's always hugely optimistic, but it isn't ever substantial.

"If this works, it's a brand-new market and a new way of doing business. We're going to get insanely rich if we pull it off, so the value of what we're doing is extremely high." That's true - but *only* if you can pull it off. So the valuations by venture capital and other investors reflect that.

But if you don't pull it off, it goes to zero almost immediately.

- 4x regular plain old tea bags (Lipton or Tetley)
- 1x Earl Gray tea bag (a good one, Twinings works best)

I doubt they own the buildings. Maybe some of the furniture and equipment. The liquidation value is probably extremely small. The asset value is probably its properties and brands. Vice isn't nothing, and it does have readership and viewership - it just isn't anything like as valuable as they assumed and it can't handle the staggering debt load that was predicated on being much more profitable than it is.

My guess is that beer sales numbers are a lagging indicator. Not counting bars/restaurants, you buy beer once a week or perhaps monthly depending on your usage. When it's almost gone, you buy more. I'd wager many of the old buyers' lack of purchases haven't been tabulated yet.

429 405 BL is the worst of the worst. I never could stand it. Yes, there are other cheap and crappy beers. But BL always had this really odd "off" taste and smell to it, that took it out of the range of "cheap crappy beers" and into something that was diseased and decomposing.

My tastebuds changed as soon as I started being able to afford better beer. LOL. The absolute swill I drank in college still gives me the cooties when I think about it. Beer that tasted like stale urine. Vodka that tasted like distilled monkeypox. But I had no money so that's all I could afford.

My guess is that beer sales numbers are a lagging indicator. Not counting bars/restaurants, you buy beer once a week or perhaps monthly depending on your usage. When it's almost gone, you buy more. I'd wager many of the old buyers' lack of purchases haven't been tabulated yet.

Actually on this, I heard that of Russia's dollar reserves in Western Banks they tried to hold or steal, almost all of it could not be found was not seized. It either got back to Russia, or other parties hid it. So they alienated most of the world from Western banks to seize....just about nothing.
