AP Poll: It's Hard to Believe, But This Poll We Just Ran About Public Attitudes About the Press Says That We Are Disbelieved and Despised

How did this happen? I am stun.

When it comes to the news media and the impact it's having on democracy and political polarization in the United States, Americans are likelier to say it's doing more harm than good.
Nearly three-quarters of U.S. adults say the news media is increasing political polarization in this country, and just under half say they have little to no trust in the media's ability to report the news fairly and accurately, according to a new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights.
The poll, released before World Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, shows Americans have significant concerns about misinformation.

The press, which is totally a disinterested third-party observer and has no undisclosed direct financial interest at stake here, frets that people's disgust with the media may send the public to other sources of news besides the media.

That breakdown in trust may prompt many Americans to reject the mainstream news media, often in favor of social media and unreliable websites that spread misleading claims and that can become partisan echo chambers, leading to further polarization.

The press is the biggest, loudest source of disinformation and conspiracy theories in the world, and also is the biggest, nastiest, least-nuanced partisan echo chamber.

While a slim majority of Americans say they have some degree of confidence in the news media's ability to report the news fully and fairly, only 16% say they are very confident. Forty-five percent say they have little to no confidence at all.

Four in 10 say the press is doing more to hurt American democracy, while only about 2 in 10 say the press is doing more to protect it. An additional 4 in 10 say neither applies.

And more Republicans think the news is strongly influenced by the U.S. government and the political views of journalists.

Can anyone remember this story, and help me figure out how to search for it? Some commentator pointed out that the BBC and other big news organizations had formed a cartel, the point of which was to "fact-check" and "rate" competitor independent/conservative-tilting news sources. I think there was an open admission, an actual quote, the gist of which was that the cartel believed that the media was facing possible extinction and needed to take action to squash and libel its business competitors.

Update: I can't find the quote I'm looking for, but thanks to Buzzion and Bluebell, I know I'm talking about the "Trusted News Initiative," a state-funded censorship campaign, coordinating the power of the world's biggest media behemoths and the US and UK governments.

More of that government-corporate partnering that was deployed to such wonderful effect by Messrs. Musolini and Hitler.

Plaintiffs: CHD, Kennedy, Creative Destruction Media, Trial Site News, Ty and Charlene Bollinger (founders of The Truth About Cancer and The Truth About Vaccines), independent journalist Ben Swann, Erin Elizabeth Finn (publisher of Health Nut News), Jim Hoft (founder of The Gateway Pundit), Dr. Joseph Mercola and Ben Tapper, a chiropractor.
Legacy news organizations are publishers of original news content and include the defendants named in the lawsuit.

"Core partners" of the TNI include the AP, Agence France Press, the BBC, CBC/Radio-Canada, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the Financial Times, First Draft, Google/YouTube, The Hindu, The Nation Media Group, Meta, Microsoft, Reuters, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Twitter and The Washington Post.
The Trusted News Initiative (TNI), founded by the BBC [and the Google Initiative (GI) [similar to TNI], is allegedly trying to keep misinformation at a minimum and promote democracy and freedom. However, they now speak as one global voice, and some say their purpose for being is global information control.

34 The media is in quite the predicament. The old guard grew up in the era of Vietnam and Watergate, and wanted to be like the "heroic" reporters of that era. But the media environment is totally different now: I don't think even the Clinton impeachment could survive online scrutiny, and the Republicans who botched the effort would mostly be dismissed in primaries.

The new reporters, who really should have learned lessons from the rise of the Greenwalds or even TYT, are simply stupid. They have zero real world experience, and think influence is just what corporations hand you. While they are partly right, they're mostly wrong, and that's why they can't recover the way any other American profession might.

And I am not concerned in the slightest about misinformation. Misinformation is a pointless bugaboo. It happens, but it isn't very relevant. I am very much concerned about disinformation. Everything in our press is disinformation, at all times, in all things, at all levels.

I hate this "misinformation" crap. It isn't. "Misinformation" means "I am wrong." It is *disinformation.* "Disinformation" means "I am lying."

I don't remember it, but it doesn't surprise me. The press has been a cartel for a long time. That cartel takes its orders from the state.

The state has no external competition, so the competition is internal (it's factional). Press competition is thus in the same regard. It does whatever the faction to which it is aligned wants it to do. And what all factions want is for the press to lie continuously. *Which* lies any given paper promotes may differ, but *that* they are lies will not.

I think there was an open admission, an actual quote, the gist of which was that the cartel believed that the media was facing possible extinction and needed to take action to squash and libel its business competitors.

I have a theory that the American nation as a whole has turned vociferously against the media narrative and rejected it wholesale, finding alternate news sources readily across the internet that is a source of heterodox views.

And the left knows it which is why they have resorted to "fortifying" elections.

If the American people want the government they want, they have to take back voting, but that's largely a local issue in a nation where moving to a new state is easier than effecting electoral change in a corrupt state. So, the country is simply bifurcating.

The "we're unbiased" crap dates from the advent of broadcasting. Broadcast bandwidth (the number of radio stations and TV channels) are limited and regulated, so the press coverage had to be "neutral." In the print media, it was never "unbiased" or any such crap. It was partisan as hell, going back to the beginning. The print media shifted to match the new "neutrality" that came into being.

It's always been nonsense. The benefit to the old, pre-broadcast way, though, was twofold:
1. You knew which partisans were being represented in the paper
2. There were papers for all kinds of partisans

It's just as partisan now, except it is less transparent and entirely one-sided.

Sadly it works the other way. Why is gas $10 in Arizona? Because it's next to CA. Look at a map of gas prices, it's almost a perfect correlation that the closer your get to CA, the more expensive gas gets.

A lot of people are focusing on Biden's open border. There's a related and insane long term practice of police being FORBIDDEN from asking or investigating the residency status of criminals.

The dude's firing off a gun in an unsafe manner in a residential area. If they had checked to see if he was in the country legally, they would have discovered he wasn't, which makes his possession of a firearm a felony. That's an open and shut case, as opposed to the crime of firing off the gun which probably involves an investigation involving witnesses and forensics and all that.

She had Melissa Harris on the other day and they were talking about what it was like to work at Fox News. And yeah, pretty much everyone hates each other and it seemed like the worst bosses are those women bosses. you know the one that Tucker allegedly call the c word? they both kind of chuckled and said yeah, of course. Apparently, she is so nasty that she even screamed at Huckabee when he came there as a presidential candidate for a show to be interviewed on.
I find it kind of interesting to hear the viewpoints of people that were actually in the news industry, and there are not many fond memories of who they worked with LOL
