DeSantis Insiders Say He'll Form Exploratory Committee in Mid-May; Trump Says He Should Drop Out to Show His "Loyalty"

Ron DeSantis may announce the formation of a presidential exploratory committee in mid-May.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is poised to jump into the presidential fray as soon as mid-May, four GOP operatives familiar with the conversations told NBC News.

One of the sources emphasized that it would be an exploratory committee, with the official launch coming soon after.

Some of his backers are urging him to declare as early as May 11, to counter the creeping national narrative that former President Donald Trump is the overwhelming front-runner for the 2024 GOP nomination. Others in the governor's orbit, however, have argued that that date would be too soon, according to two of those sources. All emphasized, however, that mid-May is the target.

Trump continues pounding his personal obsession, that because he endorsed DeSantis in 2018, DeSantis owes him "loyalty" in perpetuity.

Donald Trump's campaign has called out Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a new TV ad for "attacking" the former Republican president and one-time ally -- and suggested the governor should drop out of the race before he even gets in.

"Ron DeSantis was struggling big time in his primary race for governor of Florida," says the ad's narrator, referring to the 44-year-old's first gubernatorial run in 2018.

"Polls revealed DeSantis was failing so bad, he was losing by a staggering 17 points," the narrator adds. "Then DeSantis was saved by the endorsement of President Trump.

"Trump's support was so powerful, just two days after the endorsement, DeSantis took a commanding lead and it propelled him to being elected governor."

The ad includes a clip from DeSantis' victory speech in November 2018, in which the potential 2024 GOP challenger says, "I'd like to thank our president for standing by me when it wasn't necessarily the smart thing to do."

"You're welcome, Ron," the narrator resumes. "Unfortunately, instead of being grateful, DeSantis is now attacking the very man who saved his career. Isn't it time DeSantis remembers how he got to where he is?"

As someone at HotAir pointed out, not only did DeSantis return the favor by endorsing and campaigning for Florida in 2020, but he also was a strong voice defending Trump on RussiaGate. One might wonder if Trump's endorsement of DeSantis was payback for that critical Russiagate defense. In which case, this was an act of self-interest, not generosity to DeSantis.

In any event, no one owes someone "loyalty" for life for a couple of five minute endorsement announcement. It's silly. There's a limit to how much and for how long someone "owes" you, even if he saves your life.

And I know this upsets people to hear, but Ron DeSantis did give Trump an open lane for reelection... in 2020. This is DeSantis' year. DeSantis isn't intruding in Trump's year; Trump is intruding in DeSantis'.

I know people keep saying "DeSantis should wait." Wait? You mean wait until he no longer has a high-profile job as governor? Wait until people begin forgetting him, like Christie did when he refused to run in 2012 and then discovered no one wanted to hear about him in 2016?

Wait until he's out of office and forced to take a job as a lobbyist or lawyer, which will then, no doubt, be used to tar him?

Wait until after he's left office and disbanded the team of loyalists around him who then are forced to take jobs with other politicians? Hillary Rodham created the Clinton Global Initiative to keep her loyalists paid during her interregnum. I assume no one is suggesting DeSantis do the same.

No, this is his year. Sorry, but 2020 was Trump's year. Trump doesn't get to keep on running until he wins. At least he doesn't get to do so with no one else challenging him.

I'm not picking a side in this. Let the American people decide like 2020 when they decided to re-elect Donald Trump - until 3 am when they changed their minds as they slept and toilets overflowed, and cardboard barriers on windows began to appear, and 15,000 Pennsylvanians marched back into the polls and rescinded their vote - captured on live tv in eight minutes time.

46 trump needs to stop with the negative campaign stuff. He won in 2016 because he mostly put himself above the others in the primary by saying what he was going to accomplish if he was elected president. He ran on make America great again and won on that, but he is not doing that this time around. He can hammer joe biden's record 24/7 and win handily that way but he is not doing that, instead he is spending his time and money hammering desantis.

His ego is getting in the way and the "I am ahead and will not participate in any debate" stance is problematic. It literally gives joe biden a get out of jail free card on debating whoever wins the republican primary and he is going to use that card.

you're not telling DeSantis to not run in 2024; you're basically telling him to give up on being president forever.

84 Trump will happily destroy the village to save the village. Rather than drumbeating on the failures and damage done by the Biden cabal, he makes up nicknames and acts butthurt that DeSantis isn't grateful. Between the anger, bitterness and hawking NFT junk he's shrinking himself every day. Biden's teleprompter must be grateful.

86 "Wait until he's out of office and forced to take a job as a lobbyist or lawyer"

Forced? My guy, with the amount of money DeSantis has from his donors he could go into real estate. For that matter, if you're as forgettable as Chris Christie that doesn't speak well of you. You're only -forced- into it after half a billion dollars if money is your drug and you have no other skills.

But DeSantis actually has some good potential in 2024 and beyond, if he wanted to use it. Instead of waiting for the courts to rule that a corporation can given itself sole jurisdiction over its own district in Florida, start sending in inspectors to monorails and buildings. Like every other Florida property requires. If Disney resists, declare a state of emergency and start jailing people up to the C-suite level. I'm sure a JAG lawyer can make it clear that corporations can't actually regulate their own properties no matter what the courts say.

I don’t think DeSantis is a tool of GOPe, but a lot of them are supporting him over Trump. I think it’s more likely that he taking them for a ride, but I’m not fully convinced yet.
Re:Trump - he will use any broken bottle at hand to slash his opponent’s face. Disney is at hand. He also uses his rallies to test lines of attack. You can rest assured that if he stops attacking DeSantis on Disney, he’ll attack him on something else.
These kind of attacks raise doubt about him in the same way doubt was raised about him in 2016. Would he be conservative enough? Would he do what needed to be done, or was he another NY liberal in conservative clothing?
He answered ALL DOUBTS during his four years about his governing. How many times were you happy with what he was doing? How many times were you thrilled when it made the right people cry? Keep that in mind the next time Trump attacks DeSantis

153 Ok here are my thoughts. I love Trump as a human being and as a President. I'd be ecstatic to have him back as CIC if only to watch major heads explode forever but also because I think he'd do great on Foreign Policy and the Economy. Sadly aside from the media angle he or his team don't seem to get the culture wars thing at all (Bud Light, Disney, etc.)

But what hasn't sit well with me for a while is that since 2020 I haven't heard anything that would lead me to believe that he and his team have any solution to the ahem problems that robbed him the first time around. And he and his team haven't effectively communicated the nature of that tragedy since.

So seems like the plan is to simply run it back in 2024 without any of the advantages he had 2020. How can that work out well.

So color me unexcited about the candidacy.

And to even talk about this requires suspension of disbelief, having to pretend that he would even be allowed to take office, or be allowed to Govern once there.

I do plan to vote always but it feels likes Pascal's wager to me.

Politically, I think Trump's doing the right thing if DeSantis is seriously thinking of entering the race. He's the only real challenge to Trump, and I'm sure Trump would like to avoid a bruising primary, so starting to pick away at DeSantis makes sense.

Nothing said so far is permanently damaging, so DeSantis can easily run in 2028, but if he enters 2024, it will be very ugly, and probably destroy both candidates.

244 I agree with the notion that Ronnie D and all the other more grassroots-ish conservatives owe Trump a lot for breaking open the gate. And I'd probably agree with Trump's line of reasoning if this was 2020 and RDS was trying to kneecap the incumbent in the primary.

But it's not 2020, and there's a credible argument to be made that Trump's obsession with everything being about him had a negative impact on the last three major elections (2020, the senate rematches, 2022). So it's a bit much to basically claim that anyone remotely associated with Donald Trump must always bend knee for the rest of his life.j

Like Cooldawg says, if Trump wants a shot at 2024 he needs to go back to the basics. What he's doing now just sounds like sore-loser whining and that won't win friends and influence people.

Trump proved in 2020 that he doesn’t have what it takes to combat the dems ability to fix the election. He was in the best possible position to combat it last time and he didn’t. There is no way he could be in a better position now that he’s out of office, and anything he could have learned from the experience can as equally be applied by another candidate as well. I don’t know if DeSantis can stop it either, but insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results, so it seems like he should get a shot over giving Trump a mulligan on 2020.

Well yeah his unfavorables are nowhere near trump's. But people will say "That's not fair, they don't know DeSantis enough to have unfavorable opinions about him," which is true-ish, so we don't know how seriously to take his lower unfavorability.

We'll have to see how it plays when Trump makes it official that he's saying he's the more moderate, liberal candidate on abortion and transgenderism, and won't plunge us into a "Sanctimonious" culture war.

Bottom line is that trump was not prepared to win in 2016 and he spent most of his time attacking the people he appointed and he appears to be ready to make the same mistakes again.

That goes both ways. DeSantis missed both CPAC and the NRA convention in his Quest for More Money, which is a very bad idea if you need grassroots attention. It's mainly the strategy you use if your campaign is completely dominated by DC consultants who don't actually know how to appeal to the grassroots without endorsements and money.

One more little item: here's Rep. Greg Steube defending Trump (no surprise), and being down on RDS (a little surprising).

When the United States collapses, I'm looking forward to most of the GOPe being lined up in front of a firing squad and given just what they deserve for the evil they sat by and allowed to happen to this nation, because all they cared about was money. Maybe they will have searing liquid gold poured down their mouths (the Crassus way) as they watch the American flag get ripped down and will pass away knowing that it was all their fault.

365 The same people carping about DeSantis never mention he stuck it to the mouse nice and hard. I doubt Trump would do the same.

368 DeSantis showed in 2022 that Republicans *can* register and turn-out voters who are Republicans, Centrists and disenfranchised democrats that are culturally conservative.

While Donald Trump was telling people not to vote-by-mail, DeSantis was encouraging them to do so, and they did, only with a Republican slate checked off.

And that is how you win by almost 20 points.

Aren't you guys sick of losing? Donald Trump in 2016 beat the single most polarizing and hated, female, politician in American history. By 2018 he was a known quantity and we lost, by 2020 he lost against a dementia patient who never left the basement; think about it. Someone who phoned it in (and even fucked that up) beat him. 2022 was a disaster of epic proportion.

I'm allowed one mistake, but I course correct and will never make the same mistake twice. Some of you though... enjoy the last days in the Führerbunker.

if you can decide to refuse to vote for Trump just because "he will lose," I and anyone else can decide not to vote for DeSantis because HE WILL LOSE.

It's weird how people just automatically assume DeSantis will survive the media/Democrat jihad just because Trump has. It's especially weird because DeSantis has been destroyed in the GOP primary when it's basically just been Trump going after him. How is Bubblewrap Ron going to hold up when every news show on every network every hour of every day is calling him "the guy who wants to kill trans kids" and "the guy who wants to ban abortion nationwide?"

I get it - win any way you can and then worry about rebuking the 20% of your voters who - let's face it - probably needed it. Kari Lake pretty much said "you know what, it personally sucks too much to pretend these people deserve anything less than my middle finger."

Well, she's not Governor, the self-congratulating McCain voters got someone who is going to make it a point to torture them, and everyone who watched the whole drama unfold are now saying, Jesus' man, that state of Arizona is pretty retarded!

No one got what they wanted but everyone got what they deserved.

Because instead of calling people reductionist and silly names, in the process turning off women and swing voters, DeSantis actually accomplishes things. Which is why he *won reelection* by 20% while Trump *lost* reelection by 5%.

And how did that "draining the swamp" go? Last I checked, Trump just moved it to Mar-a-Lago.

How's the border? The wall doing good or is Bannon still collecting money off it?

I do like what his son-in-law did in the Middle East, then again he wants nothing to do with him anymore. He was always the smart one.

Add to that the fact that the Biden* Department of Justice has been making noises about investigating DeSantis for "human trafficking".

The Ronulans have this interesting belief that DeSantis will either be immune to attacks from the Joseph Goebbels media, or at least they will not be as effective as they were against Trump. Ronulans remind me of football fans screaming that if only the backup quarterback can become the starter the team will win the championship. It never occurs to them that the reason the starter is struggling might be because the rest of the team is shit. Have we seen any evidence over the last two years that the post-Trump GOP is really going to put the fight the Democrats?

382 I am making $90 an hour working from home.I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning sixteen thousand dollars a month by working on the connection, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed me to attempt it simply. 383 August 8th, 2022. That is the day DeSantis went into hiding on behalf of globalist donors. If I were him I would have immediately stated:

"The federal government is conducting an illegal raid of our former president and I order our Florida sheriff's to go to the site and exert their jurisdiction protecting the former presidents constitutional rights(which is a sheriff's job).

He didn't and thus fired the first shot at the man who helped him over the finish line in 2018. Loyalty isn't final in this case, but it does matter.
