Meet The PetMorons

edietl.jpeg

K.T.

Thought I'd better send along a photo of my doggo, before it's a 'memorial' photo, IYKWIM.

This is Edie, my 17 year, 7 month old chiwa. Doesn't see too well, hears only loud sharp noises (sneezes rock her world), and the back legs aren't functioning like they used to. Sweet as sugar, stubborn as the day is long. Love her to bits.

I post, rarely, as Best Thief in Lankhmar

Awww, a dog who has been loved. We can tell . . .

From Peaches:

pechesss.jpg

Hi, K.T.! Great pet thread this week, but the lack of feline participation reminded me that I've had this pic for 4 months and have kept meaning to send it. This is Zoey, aka the Pudgy Princess.

On 11/4/2008, Barack Obama was elected president. I spent the next day crying, uncontrollably, I just could not stop. The following day, Thursday, I girded my loins and ran out to do some errands, groceries, etc. When I got home, my big floofy robust only-8-years-old Henry, who I had brought home to CA from a work trip to Ohio, was dead on the floor. Heartbreak. Two days later I started searching for a tabby kitten. The amazing Lange Foundation had four - The Banger Sisters (movie reference). I took the shyest one and I knew she would be my last kitten joy - my two remaining life goals are to outlive her and not outlive my money. She had asthma, which is a very horrible thing to watch in a kitten but we've managed it very well over the years and she has saved me from total isolation since the wuflu hit.

We're both old now but she's still as pretty as she ever was (not remotely so in my case, lol!). Sorry it's Christmasy but if you are looking for some feline input, feel free to edit at will.

xoxo from Peaches and Baby Zoey.

We take Christmasy photos even in April. Baby Zoey looks like a wonderful cat, and the Christmas lights are complimentary.

And today with her sister Pepper dog.

Great photos! Madison and Pepper look like they get along! And in the first one, I can imagine that Madison was quite uncomfortable. Glad she recovered so nicely.

TheBoatAug2008.JPG

Hi from gp!

Digging through old albums. Here's The Boat, the only male in The Marmalade Gang (the gang that couldn't poop straight.) Pic was taken Aug 2008 at age 8. He was very sweet and gentle, and a music lover. The Boat would dock between my legs as I reclined watching movies.

Thanks!

Thank you for sharing your great memories and the photo of Boat, a great cat! And an explorer, by the looks of the photo.

LucySnowballs.jpg

Hi K.T.,

Back again. My Ace of Spades handle is "Levin".

Attached are a couple of pictures of Lucy (one with snowballs). She and I were inseparable.

I got her as a six-week old mini-Australian Shepherd puppy after I had
divorced and moved into a small home home in central New Hampshire.

Quite the character, she loved riding around with me in the jeep.

Once she saw some ducks crossing a street and she leaped from
the passenger side over my lap as I was driving through the driver
window onto the road. She was slightly banged up but okay.

I eventually got remarried to a dog lover, so her last six years she had
two doting adults.

Lucy's devotion and loyalty to me was on a level I never experienced.

When my mother died in Guatemala, I left for Central America for about
ten days in mid winter. When I got back, the wife told me that Lucy sat
at the fence in terrible winter weather every night for hours until 11 PM,
hoping to see me and my jeep drive down the road.

That kind of love only exists with dogs.

The snowball photo reminds me of Lucy waiting for you in winter . . .

What great memories of a great dog. Thanks for sharing.

Biscuits has not given birth yet. Unfortunately she has no ob/gyn to whom we could refer. LOL
Mr Stubborn still does not come out when we visit the room. I'm suspecting some nasty encounter he may have had with a human when still living in that parking lot. The other four are friendly, Biscuits and Salem particularly so.

There's also another extensive photo update at link below including video.

7 MadisonTheCat and Duncanthrax's Ace are roughly the same age. Some of you will remember how Ace showed up at the TxMudMoMe corral. Madison got her name from the HQ in July the same year, can't recollect whether TMJ or MisHum suggestion. Since she was rescued from the middle of a busy intersection with broken back legs on July 4th, Madison she is. She was basically raised by Pepper thus very dog-like in nature.

Ours go au naturel, and there's a lot of murdering going on. At least when SHTF they'll be able to feed themselves.

Upside is that we're at least 600 feet from the road and there are no immediate neighbors. They have plenty to interest them here, and they haven't really gone into the woods much.

9 Edie reminds me of the little Chihuahua we inherited from our friend when he died. Except that Son was also blind (and missing an eye). We had to have most of his teeth removed (the ones that had not fallen out) and he was not really very sweet, though he became sweeter the longer we had him.

R.I.P., Son.

27 22 That's the only thing I care about these days. Nobody I trust to care for my cats when I croak.

It costs at least $600/yr to care for each cat these days, between food, litter, and annual medical care. Don't know anybody who would want to shoulder that burden of expense.

I could write a funded contract of my estate with somebody to take care of them, but who knows what they'd do with the cats and the cash the minute I croak.

If I go out by myself to feed it, I can actually touch it, so I know it was someone's pet at some time. I'm going to try and set up an area in the outside shelter, where it can feel secure and get a place it can stay warm in the winter.

We have a short leash and a retractable leash for longer walks. When I pick up the retractable, Daisy yips with joy, and jumps.

57 More Daisy tale - while we're away

She hasn't chewed up the Wrong Thing in quite a while.

If I ate at the desk and threw a paper napkin in the short deskside trashcan, she'll still fish it out and chew it to pieces. So, 1. I remember to put such stuff in the tall kitchen can. And.. B. She knows it's wrong. I shook the trash can at her; she does Guilty Look really well.

But that's harmless, except for cleaning up the litter.

A couple of times, we've come home, everything seems fine, but one of my houseslippers has mysteriously moved from where I left them to the foot of our bed. Not chewed up, seemingly unharmed, but moved. Just one.

Good dog. Good enough.

Such was my situation when Chekov the Siberian passed in late March of '22. It's freeing not to have to buy and put down food, to clean a litter box, etc. . . . but it was also very strange and disturbing. With the exception of '81-'83, and the 3 months before I adopted black Stirling, I've had a cat since I was 12. Looong time.

60 As always, a lovely group of pets.

I've been letting my cat Allie watch cat tv on the computer in my library.

Today I decided to do something different. I hung a birdfeeder outside the window to the library. We'll see if any birds show up.

I did it a few years ago and squirrels ended up destroying the feeder (of course).

Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at April 29, 2023 04:40 PM (BpYfr)

61 Notsothoreau, there is also a stray shorthair gray male cat in the complex. He knows me by sight and will follow me, crying, from the parking lot to get some dry food. Clearly he used to be someone's pet, or maybe (given what a slimy scrofulous bunch of hominids live around me) he's a "pet" who is allowed to roam. Goodnatured and pleased to be petted. And the weather here is not dangerous -- just the possibilities of being run over or found by a coyote.

I keep telling Miss Linda she should take him in, but she denies she wants a cat. And why should she? She gets all the fun of my two and skips the expense.

Get some cayenne pepper and mix it with the bird seed and sprinkle it all around the feeder. Doesn't bother the birds a bit but squirrels hate it. Speaking from experience here. :-)

63 Drizzling and cloudy here. Stirling the Great Black Kitten is grooming his plushy fur as he sprawls on the floor. Dagny the little brown torbie Siberian is curled atop a folded blanket on the back of the couch -- a blanket with is imprinted with a large pic of a brown tabby-and-white kitten who looks something like her, and something like her long-ago predecessor Tatiana.

64 Outliving pets… After good ol' Gimli died, we thought much about getting another dog. AoS commenters had suggested getting an old dog from the shelter, and we were thinking about that. Then these folks drove up with this stray they'd found… A not-quite-1-year-old Belgian Malinois is not exactly what we'd've gone looking for; but, she came to us and here she is. Keeps me young, getting me up for a walk at sunrise and all that.

SonM and Daughter each have two dogs. If something happens to us, they'll take care of the pooch. And the cat.

Psalm 90:10: The days of our years are threescore years and ten… —yeah, we passed that last year. Daisy may have a good long life ahead of her. There's also the matter of giving her proper attention while our aging bodies decay.

But what can we do? The pooch is now solidly 💛 in our family, for whatever happens, so — taking it day by day.

and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Posted by: mindful webworker - sorry for the math at April 29, 2023 04:49 PM (FIOO7)

65 Come to think of it, the kitten in the plastic tub looks much like Chekov must have as a baby. And MadisonTheCat as an adult looks much like Stirling. I guess that's a sign you've lived a while, that patterns in cat looks begin to repeat.

66 Loved the story about Daisy and her walks. The ritual with our Luna is that you do NOT say the w-a-l-k word until you are ready to actually exit the house. But when I put on my "outside" shoes, she looks up. When I start loading up my equipment she gets up. When I get her collars ready, she's hard to corral because she's so excited. When I pick up the leash, she shoots to the door and whines if I'm not quick enough.

Yes, she's a good teacher.

67 Solid gray cat is one I would have problems resisting. I've considered getting an older adult cat, but am not convinced that Fanny wants company. And I'd have to get Jake to adjust to another cat in the house. Some cats are just so people oriented.

Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat learned swiftly about walks after I bought her a harness and lead and took her outside into a quiet portion of our apartment complex in CO. The third time I brought out the harness, she ran crying to the door. She loved walking ahead of us with her tail in the air, as if she were giving us the exercise instead of the reverse. I don't know if she'd learned the word "walk," though it would not have been impossible. But she knew that harness.

70 Solid gray cat is one I would have problems resisting. I've considered getting an older adult cat, but am not convinced that Fanny wants company. And I'd have to get Jake to adjust to another cat in the house. Some cats are just so people oriented.

I just don't have the room. And little Dagny is not yet altered, so I'd have kittens before I knew it. No, can't do it. If I had a house with a yard, and she were already snipped, maybe. I *think* they'd all get along.

She chose poorly.

72 cayenne pepper?

My mom would sprinkle it on dog droppings in the front yard.

I thought it was cruel.

Cruel, but effective.

73 I have room. And I'm used to having more dogs and cats. I just know that the initial adjustment is hard.

74 The Jewish cowboy Mr. Rifleman* is on MeTV, which means I needs to go shave and do a few chores. We're going out to our favorite neighborhood diner for a bite this evening. We tried last week, but some event was going on in the historic area where the diner is located, and we couldn't even find a parking spot.

75 If you have a local SPCA, they have programs for your pets after your expiration.

76 If you have a local SPCA, they have programs for your pets after your expiration.

Leave enough money for your cat and someone will take it in.

Just might let it live after the check clears.

77 One of my boys would take Lucy the Fink if something happened to me. Of that I am certain.

I just don't know who would take care of me if something happened to Lucy.

80 Well, if you're the suspicious type just do nothing for your pet. Abandon it. Plenty do.
I'm merely informing you that trustworthy programs exist if you care for your pet. Maybe start a relationship with your SPCA prior to your demise. I volunteer at mine, we handle misplaced pets due to death of owner (or incapacitation) all the time. Usually pets under such circumstances get adopted or fostered, but not the needle.

Completely off topic, (although today's pets are absolutely gorgeous!) thank you so much for recommending UHaul containers for moving. We are presently packing the first few, and it has been the easiest move in 30 years, even with other people packing for us. I am so grateful for you sharing your experience, because Pods was going to charge the same amount for 8000 pounds less shipping weight.

82 Yep, the U-Pack containers were great and everything arrived just fine. They don't have a great bookkeeping system. They stuck someone else's container on my account before I left. Then after I'd gotten everything unloaded here, they didn't check in the empty container and I had to straighten that out. They hold a lot of stuff and are easy to work with. I wished I'd just gone with three of them up front and I probably could have kept my utility trailer.

83 My middle daughter would take my kitty boys if something happened to me and J. Which is good because they are picky about food and expensive to keep up. I would worry about someone not knowing what they got into with them plus they don’t do change well at all.

Everybody has cutie pets like always!

85 The other thing that happens after that their human's demise is pets get sent to Animal Care and Control (most counties have these even if no SPCA).
If your pet gets sent there, sadly they have a week or so, tops, if no one claims it.

86 I heard a radio news report that there is a huge number of large goggies that have been surrendered by assholes at the Humane Society in Denver. We can't adopt one for reasons, but I hate that people buy fluffy puppies (probably a 'rona thing) only to learn that they require a lot of care and love, and get big.

Well hello! Haven't seen you in a bit.
I take Lucy out to the courtyard on a harness. She'd love to explore on her own, but.... no. Between the traffic and the raptors and the coyotes.... nope. I would be heartbroken if something preventable happened to her.
