Deadline Hollywood: Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Is Tracking to Make... 10% Less Money on Opening Weekend Than Thor Love & Thunder

Oof. That's not great. Disney Marvel is counting on the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie (at least with the current cast) to restore the Marvel franchise to its past glories, but if it's tracking worse than Thor Love and Thunder, it's going to be another financial disappointment.

Disney/Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 landed on tracking today before its summer-season launch date of Friday, May 5, and it's looking like a $130M domestic start.

That's lower than the $146.5M stateside opening of 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, which also kicked off summer, and distribution sources specify that the campaign for GOTG3 hasn't really fired up to its full potential yet. Hence, there's nothing to worry about.

Disney always says "everything's fine, everything's going exactly as we anticipated" before each of their recent bombs. They were still claiming this after the second week of bad box office for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, for example, and that film failed to gross even $500 million globally.

And the movie probably cost $200 million or more, plus another $150 to $200 million to market. And given that the studio takes in half or less or a movie's receipts -- the rest go to distributors, and foreign distributors give them an average of 42% -- that means that Ant-Man brought in less than $240 million for Disney. And so they lost money. Again.

Marvel's core audience knows when the movie is coming out already. Yes, advertising will reach some of the normies who don't follow Marvel movie news, but it's getting harder and harder to convince normies to care about the MCU.

The highest domestic opening for a Marvel Studios movie post-pandemic belongs to Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1M). After that, it's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which started summer last year with $187.4M.

That said, GOTG3 was tracking lower in first choice compared to GOTG2, though strong among the under-25 sect.

Will the movie perform better if it's actually good? Maybe. But it's a "darker" story.

The rumor is that several main players will die.

Director James Gunn -- who now runs things at DC alongside Peter Safran -- and cast in interviews have mentioned that the threequel will be darker, focusing on the origin story of Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper). There's also a different Gamora (Zoe Saldana) from another timeline; this version never fell in love with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt).

Not sure a "darker" cartoon movie with talking animals and trees is going to light up the box office.

Valiant Renegade points out that the usual Marvel film is heavily front-loaded, and so 50% of the total box office take is usually collected within the first 5-7 days of release.

The total global box office winds up being 2-2.5 times the opening weekend box office.

Note that the $130 million opening figure is for its domestic take. There will be more money coming in from around the world. Ant-Man made 55% of its money overseas. So maybe Guardians of the Galaxy will have a $270 million global opening, at best?

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened at $120 million domestically -- just $10 million less than the current projection for GotG 3 -- and that was a flop.

Seems to me that Marvel is paying a price for 1, wokeness, and 2, pumping out endless "content" of a very mediocre or inferior nature.

And maybe Disney is realizing that it's not smart to alienate half of your audience.

If this movie does flop, expect more firings at Woke Disney Marvel. Even the big fat geek Kevin Feige might be handed his walking papers.

And if it flops, then Warner Bros.' plan to rekindle interest in the DC Comics movie universe by putting GotG writer/director James Gunn in charge of it will look like a big mistake.

Speaking of segueways, DC Comics' recent sales are terrible.

DC Comics went woke after they watched rival Marvel go woke and alienate half of their customers. DC Comics was actually forewarned that wokeness was toxic, and went fully woke even while Marvel was attempting to shed some of its wokeness.

In the face of steeply declining sales, DC Comics attempted to Hide the Decline by pumping out tons of Batman comics. Batman is DC Comics' best selling character, and since the 80s been the best-selling character in all of comics. (In the industry they speak of a "Batman Standard" -- judging the sales of other titles based on how close they can get to the hypothesized maximum, which is represented by the sales of Batman's main title.)

DC just keep spinning off new Batman titles and titles featuring members of "the Bat-Family" like Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, Harley Quinn, etc. About half of the 60 titles DC publishes per month are Batman-related titles.

They are just taxing and taxing and taxing the Batman completionists, extracting more and more money from them because Batman completionists are nice generous cows to milk.

Critics kept warning DC that they were going to create "Batman Fatigue" and declining interest in the character.

And that now seems to have happened, as Spider-Man displaces Batman to become the best-selling character. Meanwhile, half of their other comics are pulling sales numbers low enough to require cancellation (in a healthy market, at least).

Let's say there are 30 Batman-related titles per month. They sell for about an average of $5 each (yes, this is not the comics industry you remember from your youth; they've had to constantly escalate prices to make up for the decline in sales.)

That's about a hundred and fifty bucks per month just to keep your Batman collection complete.

Here's a problem with milking completionists: Completionists will only spend all that money to complete their collection if they believe it's financially possible to complete the collection.

The moment you make it clear to them that you will attempt to milk them for every dollar by pumping out Infinite Product, they will give up attempting to complete their collection. And they won't just balk at buying the new titles that broke the camel's back -- they'll stop buying most of the titles that they were buying just for completion's sake.

Suddenly Batman Collectors who had been diligently collecting 30 titles a month will decide to scale back to just buying the two main Batman titles plus Nightwing and a few other books.

Will that happen? Only time will tell but yes, that will happen. You can only financially abuse someone for so long.

Speaking of abrupt transitions, here's another Woke Company paying the price for alienating its clients:

Horses... sunsets... wheat fields... veterans... cowboys... 'Merica... 9/11...

All empty imagery designed for propaganda purposes only. Yeah, they actually throw in a reference to 9/11 and tell us to "remember" 9/11, showing us the Freedom Tower that was built to replace the Twin Towers.

9/11, you say? Well now I totally want to forgive you and drink your Trans Beer.

Budweiser's new pro-America advertisement featuring its iconic Clydesdale horses has been ripped by critics who argue it reeks of desperation in the wake of the Bud Light controversy -- insisting it's too little, too late for the beer maker.

The patriotic ad, released on social media on Friday, features a Budweiser Clydesdale running across the American heartland as the narrator declares: "This is the story of the American spirit."

The timing of the commercial's release was quickly slammed on social media as Budweiser's parent company, Anheuser-Busch, continues to grapple with the backlash over Bud Light's partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

"Don't look now @AnheuserBusch @budweiserusa but the Clydesdale has already left the barn. The train has sailed, the ship has left the station," attorney Philip Holloway tweeted.

"Far too late for this pandering now," sports announcer Mike Perleberg added. "I've drawn my line in the sand against ridiculous wokeism and it is to consciously never buy or support an @AnheuserBusch product ever again and share that disdain among people I see consuming their products."

...

"Lol, hard pivot huh?" Angela McArdle added.

Ex-heavyweight boxer Ed Latimore also chimed in, writing: "Man, this s--t might have worked in the 80s, but the internet is forever."

They must really think that conservatives are stupid, ill-educated, easily-conned rubes, to think they could just throw in some 9/11 imagery and we'd all just coming running to thank them for exploiting the National Wound of 9/11 for cynical commercial purposes.

And obviously, they do think that. They hold us in contempt.

I am not an expert in comic book stuff in any degree, but I remember one of RazorFist's rants and he claims that DC went woke first awhile ago. His example was DC turning Bat-Girl into a lipstick lesbian.

Just my two cents.

7 Wait. A "darker" Guardians? I went to the first one, intrigued by the snarkiness of rocket Raccoon in the trailers and online teasers. But the dialog was not that good and the plot not that imaginative. At least it wasn't "dark."

If it's going "dark," then count me out.

I miss the days of Kelly & Scotty on I Spy, or their movie descendants Butch Cassidy and Sundance.

10 I don't know if it was mentioned before, but you should watch Shazam 2 because it has Mary Marvel looking GOOD, an actual attractive woman without a shaved head.

It's a mid movie even though I really liked the first one, a movie that clearly got fucked up because The Rock wanted to be even better than Superman and ruined the DCEU even more than it was, but pretty ladies are hard to find without "the message" being applied to everything.

This right here is one reason why I stopped collecting Magic: The Gathering cards. WotC was saturating the market with more and more product, so it was pointless to try and collect cards anymore. Also, the cards they've been printing are overpowered as all get out, of poor physical quality, and also woke. So I've been done with M:TG for several years now.

ah, well, I mean, that was one title. Also she wasn't a lesbian. Though Gail Simone turned the title completely woke, and wrote her to be fighting Abusive Men month after month after month.

When her editor told her she couldn't keep writing the same story every month, and wanted her to submit outlines for the stories six months in advance (to show she had more in her than "Abusive Man" stories), she ignored him. He called her. She refused to answer the phone. He emailed her. She refused to answer his text.

When he finally had enough, he wrote her by email to say "You've ignored your editor for a month, you're fired."

She then went on Twitter and complained to her fans -- "Weaponized Cat Ladies," Ya Boy Zach called them -- "I just got fired OVER AN EMAIL!!"

The feminists shrieked, the media picked up the story, and management forced the editor to re-hire Gail Simone. I think he himself got fired soon after.

35 I think the key to the Marvel debacle, is that the second movies of a Heroes arc are NOT AS GOOD as the first movies.

Thor? First movie great... then... downhill.
Capt. America? same same..
Iron Man? don't even get me started on how disappointed I was in the follow on movies....

GOTG? First movie I've watched multiple times... second movie (which I also own) I've watched ONCE... just did not have the same fun vibe as the first.

But hell... Peter Jackson did the same with his two HOURS LONG movies, Lord of the Rings, and the Hobbit (they are really just one long movie cut into parts)... first was REALLY good... second was a Cartoon.

Just wait until they announce their intention to totally redo Frontierland because the west was full of oppression.

Here is the thing about the Marvel movies. When Sony made Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-man was the actual hero of the movie.

Disney, starting with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and then with Love and Thunder, went through all sorts of contortions to make sure a new female character was the hero of the movie.

Fool me once - shame on you Disney. I will NOT buy another theater ticket for a Disney M-she-U movie that is pretending to have a male lead hero. The new Guardians movie will make sure Quill needs saving.

65 I don't think that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is going to do gangbusters in the theater for several reasons.

1) Marvel in general has a stink about it that people just aren't that interested in viewing. They've lost normal viewers and the rabid Marvel Zombies are all they have left.
2) GoG 2 was not that good. It was overly long and meandering and had a weak story. Nostalgia bait music on a walkman is not enough to fix that.
3) James Gunn is not even working with Marvel any more, and people are going to feel like he just finished this for contractual obligation
4) The End Game storyline ruined almost every character in the team

It will make money, but not good money.

69 In more important news

On April 18, 1943, United States Army Air Force a force of Lockheed P-38 Lightnings took off from Henderson Field Guadalcanal for an important mission.

To intercept the architect of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This mission was fraught with danger, should the US try and intercept Yamamoto thus risking telling the Japanese that the Allies were reading Japanese messages? The final decision was kicked up to Washington where it was green-lit.

Flying at wave to level to avoid Japanese radar the P-38s set off for distant Bouganville where Yamamoto was set to visit the troops. Because of the range, this mission required the Japanese to be on time and at the right location for it to succeed.

Unluckily for the two G4M Betty bombers carrying Yamamoto and Ugaki, they were not late enough. But they weren't so both bombers were soon streaking earthward mortally wounded. Yamamoto would die but Ugaki would survive.

Amazingly the Japanese never realized their codes had been compromised. Yamamoto's remains were collected, cremated, and he would be thus enshrined as a national hero.

Board room of Bud light. Chart showing sales plummeting. President pounds the table.

"Who ordered this? What the hell were the people in marketing thinking?"

Everyone murmurs. A look alike to Heinerscheid stands up and starts talking her blather about diversity and inclusion. The president listens for a moment, then presses a button, and she falls though a trap door, Dr. Evil style. As we hear her scream falling down the long chute the president calls after her "Dilly Dilly."

81 That's the kind of dialog I'd like to hear in a movie or a TV show. Of course there is always the gold standard:

Dana, describing her creepy encounter with her refrigerator: "And I heard a voice say, 'Zuul!'"
Peter, nodding: "You don't often see that kind of behavior in a major appliance."
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius

That may be the gold standard for movies, but the gold standard for TV shows is:

Jayne: Six men came to kill me one time. The best of 'em carried this. ( approaches Mal ) It's a Callahan full-bore autolock. Customized trigger, double-cartridge thorough gauge. ( beat ) It is my very favorite gun. ( holds it out to Mal )
Mal: ( beat ) [Chinese] You offering me a trade?!
Jayne: A trade?! Hell, it's theft. It's the best damn gun made by man. It has extreme sentimental value. It's miles more worthy than what you got.
Mal: What I got? She has a name.
Jayne: So does this. I call it Vera.
Mal: Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

82 "The moment you make it clear to them that you will attempt to milk them for every dollar by pumping out Infinite Product, they will give up attempting to complete their collection. And they won't just balk at buying the new titles that broke the camel's back -- they'll stop buying most of the titles that they were buying just for completion's sake."

Is.... that how it works? I was a fan of one or two major franchises, but even at my most money-flush and fanatic it never occurred to me to spring for thirty different comic book lines at once. Especially when maybe three of those comics are worth any amount of money. At least ten would need me being paid to read them. And there's no amount of money that would have made me call myself a Batwoman fan.

84 Saw "John Wick 4" last night.

Enjoyed it a lot. Very entertaining. Great action, acting, and direction. Probably should've been cut by 20-30 minutes, but it's clear they were trying to go out big and use ever single battle sequence that they'd thought up but hadn't used yet.

Some folks here have been complaining that this movie isn't realistic. C'mon, man did you watch the first movie? Realistic it was not.

Anyway, The John Wick director and writer clearly played into the complaints of non-realism with a mid-movie sequence that shot from above slightly off center exactly like some of the old-style video game shooters as JW kills a gajillion baddies with a shotgun that shoots fiery blasts that sets the bad guys on fire (they show DragonFire brand shotgun shells briefly i9f that's actually a thing. It's a huge wink at the audience, and a good lead in to the even more "cartoony violence to follow, including an insane car smash up shoot out mash-up.

The series comes to an appropriate conclusion. Nice to see a series that doesn't piss all over you and ends well.

Check it out.

What these untalented idiots have done with the other properties is to move away from that type of successfully mix in order to force a storyline that includes a bunch of woke garbage. Who writes like that- starting with a premise that certain elements which are only there to appease your woke personal views must be included? It's a recipe for disaster.

My theory? Very few authors are able to take an existing story, and be true to the original authors intent.

They all want to put their 'mark' on it. Make it different so their work will be acknowledged. This leads to story arcs in which the main character is changed to the point of no longer being recognizable.

Take the Hobbit for instance. Lord of the Rings took some liberties, but was fairly close to the original story... Hobbit? in order to do something 'different'... they butchered it.

153 I dislike the Multiverse storylines.

They are difficult to follow, and ultimately everything in the universe is meaningless, because there is another one just like it, with small differences, so who cares about anything?

I know that Multiverses are important to modern non-religious theology, because it gives an explanation for all of the problems of creation. If the premise is that everything is random, you need to have infinite universes for all of the necessary coincidences to happen that make the universe that we know.

But it makes for bad movies and boring storylines.

From what I have read, the Japanese suspected their code was being read, but the solutions they had of fixing the problem had to include replacing codebooks for all units everywhere and was too much of a effort for what they were able to do.
So the solution was to hope for the best and not tell anyone.

True to a certain degree. But the elements these people want to add have zero to do with the storyline and more importantly alienate the core audience. The worst part is they know it will fail, and so it anyway. Then they drag everyone down with them, even the people who were cowed onto accepting their predestined failure because they lacked the courage to say, no.

190 But since we're going to talk about Marvelle, and the MSheU, I don't think their biggest problem is Tuff Grrrl Power.

It's the multiverse.

It violates the basic storytelling gene, which is for audiences to be able to rely on what there seeing as being THE ACTUAL STORY! If the makers can just change everything and have multiple possibilities, then nobody really knows what's going on or who to root for, and when the outcome is going to be, you know, the end.

Playing around with this basically tells audiences you can just make shit up, and what you just watched won't matter, because the next showing will just cancel it all out.

So the question is then, why should we care? Answer, we don't.

Its like time travel. The concept can work if its like the original Quantum Leap or Time Tunnel or whatever. Those were grounded in a specific universe that was real and the others were like fantasy leaps you temporarily visited. They weren't a major part of the plot, they were enclosed individual stories. That's how you make it work.

MCU: not how to do it. Such a stupid mistake. The story I heard was that phase 4 was supposed to be cosmic and headed by James Gunn. But when people pointed out Gunn's tendency to laugh about child molestation over and over and he was suspended from working for Disney Marvel, they scrambled to come up with another major storyline and Kang with the multiverse was substituted.

But at the same time what we were reading from JN-25 was about 10% of the message. But that 10% when collated with 10% of other messages plus Japanese habits gave a good indication of what was about to transpire.

Coral Sea arose because Hypo picked up enough to alert Nimitz that something was up. Same with Midway except the Japanese decided to broadcast their timetable in a compromised version of JN-25. Only after that broadcast did JN-25 change and it knocked Hypo out of the tea leaf reading business for months until they had amassed enough information to start guessing at 10% again.

I didn't love the second one. I don't know exactly what it was. I think partly it was that Starlord wasn't the swaggering Han Solo character of the middle to end of the first movie. He was the butt of several jokes and seemed very neutered. I dunno, it was OK, but it was missing something for me.

I'll probably watch the third one, in a while, with not much expectations of greatness.

Posted by: bonhomme

Exactly. I think it was the music track in the first movie that made it a phenomenon. Watching the second, I kept waiting for that feeling to kick in and it never did.

221 "Yamamoto's remains were collected, cremated, and he would be thus enshrined as a national hero."

Hopefully someone pissed on them. He was responsible for some of the worst parts of the war, especially the brutality that took place in the South Pacific. I know people who told stories about places like Guadalcanal where the Japanese were torturing and beheading Marines, then placing their heads on poles next to trail. Being Marines, they said ok if that's how you want to play the game, let's party. It got prehistoric ugly from there. They weren't proud of it and cursed the Japanese until their last breath for it.

222 But since we're going to talk about Marvelle, and the MSheU, I don't think their biggest problem is Tuff Grrrl Power.

It can work for comic books, where no one really expects consistent continuity or canonicity.

It doesn't work for movies, where your audience IS expecting consistency in continuity and canonicity. They generally are NOT the hardcore fans, but casually interested in superhero storylines, so are not used to the craziness you can find in comic books that have been around forever.

223 @180 I loved the Marvel movies til they killed Ironman and made Thor female. The two sexiest characters that made watching worthwhile gone.

----

RDJ and Chris Evans both wanted out. They wanted to move on to new things. Thus why Iron Man and Cap were both removed in very final fashions.

Thor isn't female. Jane gets to swing Thor's hammer for a bit in Love and Thunder, but she doesn't replace Thor. In fact, the movie ends with Thor about to jump into a fight with a bunch of bad guys, Mjolner in hand. Love and Thunder has issues. But Chris Hemsworth being replaced isn't one of them.

228 Yeah hopefully the rah rah flag shit is starting to fade. But I don't know. I was at a kid's school function and they started off with the pledge of allegiance. Everyone jumped out of their seats, hand on heart, face the flag and dutifully say the words.

That's the circle. The Left will continue to use the tools of state to subject the Right. The Right will continue to support and build more of the tools of state. And thus, the current cycle.

I think Obama should get a monument, built by the Left. Because he didn't build any of these tools, and he did not corrupt them - regardless of what many of here say. He simply used them.

And now ? The Left wants to defund the police, while they use the police they still have to subject their enemies. So what does the Right do ? Insist on funding the police.

I'll give it to the Soviets. At least their subjects said the required pledges and sang the required songs with minimal enthusiasm.

Post 9/11, patriotic identity was highly militaristic and imperialist. That and the fact America had far more national unity at the time. 2003 saw Bush the Lesser blunder into the Middle East on behalf of the neocon tribe and Iran. "Conservatives" defended that sack of shit for years, but the later NeverTrump betrayal from the Judeo-Christian wing made all Bush stock plummet with the base. The Republican Party can't count on unity any more than America itself can.

Now, the MAGA base is unified, motivated, and intensely suspicious of all foreign influences, but that's a separate story entirely.

Posted by: Xipe Totec at April 18, 2023 04:37 PM (pohLc)

Midway was such a stupid operation. If the codes HADNT been compromised, they would have looked like idiots taking a useless sandbar and having to sail back to Japan leaving a garrison to be gobbled up whenever we felt like it. They couldn't have left their navy there for long to protect it. And they knew that several of our carriers were in the South Seas, so there's no reason to think we would be ready to rush out and fight while they were there waiting for us.

Tie that to the 'distraction' operation in Alaska. If that HAD been a distraction, our fleet would have gone up there and missed the big battle as well. We were so concerned we didn't even try and pry them off for a year or so. But to be a useful distraction it should have been some time before the Midway operation, not at the same time.

They already knew we could take the loss of the entire Philippine Islands without rushing our navy out to fight at a disadvantage, one small atoll isn't going to cut it.

They keep trying to make Zendaya into a thing. She's not going to be a thing. They are trying so hard.

If Marvel had been smart (I know, stop laughing), they would have made phase 4 be reaction to the massive events in the Avengers. Street-level stuff, focus on characters like Spider-Man, Punisher, Moon Knight, etc. Look at how it affected the world and changed crime on the streets. Slowly build a story from there that the Avengers has to deal with, but smaller scale, smaller stakes that are more personal. THEN go into the cosmic.

I'd say the spirit of America as the founders intended was alive and well, for a good portion of your life. Was it perfect? No. It was never perfect not even in 1789. But the ideals of America were there in the 70s, 80s and 90s. You could still disagree with someone politically and be friends. Somewhere in the 2000s, it started collapsing and "America" as we know it started collapsing. By the time Obama left office it was a dead country walking. I'm not saying Obama caused it. He certainly helped the demise. But it was well on its way before he showed up.

334 I have read some more recent scholarship, can't remember where, but it seems when Enterprise and Hornet were racing south from Pearl to get into the Coral Sea fracas only to miss it; that their recall orders to get ready for Midway included them being discovered.

That way the Japanese would 'know' where all the American carriers were.

But I am not sure that holds water. Because it depends upon the Japanese finding those two carriers first of all. And after Saratoga getting torpedoed and Lexington being sunk with Yorktown mauled; I just do not see Nimitz deliberately hazarding such irreplaceable assets.

To be fair to Yama, the Japanese did this crap in China long before he was in charge of anything, this was baked into the 1940 Japan Cake. They'd take crew from downed planes and behead them, shoot nurses with MGs, maltreat the very 'Asians' they were supposedly rescuing from imperialism till they hated them worse than Europeans, the whole package.

He benefits from the lack of the 'decline phase' of the war, like Stonewall Jackson does. So he seems more notable than he likely would have been watching the US Deluge come for him. Actually, wouldn't put it past him to have arranged the 'inspection tour' to killed.

355 I was unaware that there was a movie called Thor Love &Thunder -- what self-respecting male would go see a film with that title? Unless it's three names, like Mother, Jugs & Speed, then I take it back.

Posted by: Bud Norton at April 18, 2023 05:03 PM (6cOMd)

356 People watch it without getting their expectations up might enjoy the it as a popcorn movie. It's not great. It's got a lot of flaws. But one of those flaws is that Thor is even goofier than he was in Ragnarok, and seems to have lost his character development over the first three films. With the right attitude, a viewer can get some enjoyment out of that.

The sad part is that it could have been a lot better.

***
Just taking a rough count based on the movies, Thor is on his fourth journey to discover who he is despite his character arc over several movies and the fact he's what, a couple thousand years old?

He's doing this over and over because that's what the women who work for Disney Marvel keep doing over and over trying to find some meaning in their sad pathetic man-free lives.

He and Cavill were both extremely good -- better than we fans of the original show had dared to hope for. Your reaction to Illya exactly echoes how David McCallum became the big heartthrob of the show way back when. There's something about enigmatic blond Russians, I guess. And the film, while different from the series, really captured the *spirit* of it.

If I hadn't read about Hammer's fall from grace, I'd be a lot happier.

382 Mark Levin Reveals J6 Committee Subpoenaed His Private Emails

This is one of those little sidebar stories that will likely not gain much attention but should. We need more information, obviously, but in the big picture it appears the January 6th Committee used their self-granted subpoena power to gain the personal emails of radio and Fox News host Mark Levin.

A congressional committee capable of gaining the private communication of an American citizen, without the target knowing the emails were provided is alarming. The immediate question is how was it done, and what provider turned over the content?

And here I am crazy right wing guy rolling up to their house for 3 weeks, lol. And we talked politics and argued stuff but we also got along fine. I liked them, I disagreed with everything they stood for but I still liked them as people and had a fun time.

401 I have read some more recent scholarship, can't remember where, but it seems when Enterprise and Hornet were racing south from Pearl to get into the Coral Sea fracas only to miss it; that their recall orders to get ready for Midway included them being discovered.

Posted by: Anna Puma at April 18, 2023 05:01 PM (gOewF)

Think I read about that, but its a little different. The two were on an operation to raid an island in the South Seas but Nimitz supposedly didn't want to risk it so he ordered Halsey to get spotted early and abort so as not to risk the counterstrike he was working up. Halsey did so and was prepped to move out to Point Luck early, thus missing the picket sub line.

Think that horse-faced, socially-connected AB/InBev marketing VP will ever see her annual earnings drop down to a mere six digits? She'll fail up. As do all the Hollywood wokesters.

427 They already knew we could take the loss of the entire Philippine Islands without rushing our navy out to fight at a disadvantage, one small atoll isn't going to cut it.

I wrote an outline where the IJN made a sortie to hold the Columbia up to Portland and the Kaiser shipyards.

429 @334 That way the Japanese would 'know' where all the American carriers were.

----

My understanding is that Nimitz wanted the carriers spotted so that the Japanese wouldn't be tempted to try continuing with the invasion. If they fought two carriers and American planes stopped showing up, they might think that there was nothing still in place to stop the invasion force. But if the IJN detected two more carriers, they'd conclude that landing was suicidal and recall the landing force - assuming that they hadn't already.

The next Budweiser commercial will have Jesus drinking Bud at the last supper, followed by Jesus coming out of the tomb and the first thing he asks for is a Budweiser.

432 Guardians of the Galaxy 1 was good.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was meh.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 won't get me to a theater. But I can borrow the means to watch on D-.

Deadpool 3 won't get me to the theater either, but it's the only Marvel movie I'm interested in seeing.

435 Bud Light ad #2:

We open to a gladiatorial ring. In this corner...Glorious Maximus! He's a huge sweaty tough guy in a Roman gladiatorial outfit. In the other corner...Dylan Mulvaney. He's doing these ridiculous stretches and wearing a cocktail dress.

Okay, Fight!

Dylan rushes forward arms swinging, screaming some nonsense. Glorious Maximus holds him off with a hand to the forehead of Dylan, like how you might fend off a little kid. It obviously takes little effort. In the other had he has a Bud Light. He takes a long slow drink. He smiles at the camera and says "Dilly dilly."

436 Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - i just don't get the point. The preview looks like empty drama and tired one-liners. Too many superhero movies.

438 You know, that Budweiser stuff would work if it was accompanied by at least a decent pretend level of contrition. "Yup, we screwed up big time. We left our first love and went looking for some afternoon delight and we - rightly - got burned. We're sorry and would like you to take us back."

But they can't do that and be true Progressives.
Because they haven't figured out that "inclusiveness" only goes so far. It's a (progressive) virtue ... right up until you start telling me I have to invite that a**hole, Bob, who always pisses in the pool (standing on the side) and gropes all the women (even your wife) and throws up on his way out the door (because he drank as much as everyone else combined). Because, in a different way, Mulvaney IS Bob.

439 The best thing that can happen to Disney is to let them die on the corpses or the mega money-making franchises they have killed. I actually am enjoying the front row seat to their financial insolvency.
We really don't need politicians to end Disney, they are doing it on their own by driving their loyal customers away. Good luck making a profit off the "money on the table" people who never watched your movies, purchased your toys or even liked Star Wars or Marvel. What a bunch of damn fools Disney is!

440 I've read recently that the paying movie goers are burned out on Superhero adventure flicks. I agree. When there were only a few, and those were really good, it worked. Now they've flooded the market with crap and expected no one to notice. We did. GFY.
