THE MORNING RANT: “Schlitz Happens” - Bud Light & Brand Suicide

Bud Light - Schlitz.JPG

Bud Light is committing brand suicide, and it likely won’t recover. The nation’s #1 beer brand allowed its VP of Marketing (Ivy League educated, of course) to engage a cross-dressing man who caricatures women to become a face of the product. The Bud Light brand is now toxic, with a sudden, catastrophic drop in sales.

Will the brand come back? It’s doubtful. The only question is will it have much collateral damage to the Budweiser brand, or other AB-In Bev (Anheuser Busch) products.

Many pundits are proclaiming that this will blow over and that loyal Bud Light drinkers will quickly return to the product. They point to how consumers promised to boycott woke corporations such as Amazon, the NFL, or major banks, but few actually did. There’s a difference, however. Amazon and banks are hard to divorce yourself from. Not continuing as a customer of theirs requires serious disentanglement, and a lot of work to replace. Divorcing yourself from a toxic brand like Bud Light simply requires that you buy a different brand the next time you go to the store.

As for the NFL, there is not a football competitor on Sundays, unlike Bud Light for which there are many alternatives. And even then, the NFL has suffered permanent damage from the national anthem protests. As I pointed out a couple months ago, even though the NFL is still a comparative ratings juggernaut, its viewership has never recovered from insulting its fans, with a permanent loss of 7% of its viewership.

The NFL’s peak viewership year was 2015, averaging 17.9 million viewers per game. Then came the kneeling and on-field protests in 2016, with more of it in 2017.

By 2018 viewership had fallen to 15.8 million. It has been creeping up since then, back to 16.7 million for the 2022 season that just concluded.

But comparing 2022 to 2015 still shows a 7% decline in viewership.

Then there is Gillette, which is still reviled for its “toxic masculinity” ad campaign in 2019, which accused its loyal male customers of being bigots and sexual predators. While I may not know any men who permanently quit Amazon or Apple because of its politics, I know many men who permanently stopped using Gillette in 2019 and still despise the brand. Multiply that by a couple million, and Gillette has paid a heavy price. Switching from Gillette to Schick (like switching from Bud to Yuengling) did not involve a messy disentanglement, and Gillette permanently lost a great many long-time customers.

By the way, Procter & Gamble has apparently done a masterful job of scrubbing the internet of market data regarding Gillette. There is an abundance of data online regarding market share of men’s shaving products in the US prior to 2019, but I cannot find anything showing Gillette’s market share since. (I’ve contacted P&G’s media relations requesting updated Gillette market share information, but they have not responded.)

Later in 2019, after the tremendous blowback to the toxic masculinity campaign, P&G took an $8 billion write down against the value of its Gillette asset.

Since then, I have been reading P&G’s annual 10-K reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission, trying to glean any info about how badly Gillette is doing. The only market share P&G references in the 10-K for Gillette is global, not domestic. But as to how Gillette is doing, P&G is being coy, while also setting the stage for another write down for its toxic shaving brand.

“…changes in operating plans or adverse changes in the business or in the macroeconomic environment in the future could reduce the underlying cash flows used to estimate fair values and could result in a decline in fair value that would trigger future impairment charges of the Shave Care reporting unit's goodwill and indefinite-lived intangible assets.

I think my favorite part is how P&G is trying to blame the Russia-Ukraine war for its shave care problems in the US.

Net sales and earnings growth rates could be negatively impacted by more prolonged reductions or changes in demand for our shave care products, which may be caused by, among other things: the temporary inability of consumers to purchase our products due to illness, quarantine or other travel restrictions, financial hardship, changes in the use and frequency of grooming products or by shifts in demand away from one or more of our higher priced products to lower priced products or by disruption in the supply chain or operations due to the evolving Russia-Ukraine War.

Heh. The “prolonged reduction” in demand for Gillette shave care products in the US is due to its insulting ad campaign against men, not due to a regional war in Eastern Europe. But when P&G takes its next big write down for Gillette, it’s actually going to try to blame that war.

However, if the impact of the war were to extend beyond its current scope, there could be a triggering event for the Gillette indefinite-lived intangible asset that may cause us to perform an additional impairment assessment for that asset in a future period that may result in an impairment charge.

The closest historic parallel to the current Bud Light crisis may be the implosion of Schlitz beer. That wasn’t due to wokeness, but similar to Bud Light, it was due to management insulting their customers and taking their loyalty for granted. In Schlitz’s case, they assumed their customers were too loyal and stupid to switch brands as Schlitz executives chose to increase profit by reducing the quality of the brew.

Schlitz was the second largest brewer in the country in the mid-1970s, having doubled its market share from 7% to 14% over the previous 25 years. But its leadership then did what so many bad executives learn in business school, it sought to increase profit by cutting costs and product quality.

How The #2 Beer Company In America Self-Destructed: The Infamous ‘Schlitz Mistake,’ And What We Can Learn From It

…they tinkered with their brewing mechanisms to get more beer on the market in a quicker time. They did this by speeding up the fermentation process, which they termed ‘Accelerated Batch Fermentation,’ and it cut their brewing cycle time by 50%.

Not satisfied with this alone, the company also chose to use cheaper ingredients, replacing some fresh hops with dried hops pellets, and adding corn syrup to use less barley.

If all that wasn’t bad enough, Schlitz also badly caricatured its typical drinker as a hot-headed, “likes to fight guy” in a weird campaign about trying to “take away my gusto.”

Schlitz lost almost half its market share by 1981 and the company was sold in 1982.

Bud Light is the #1 selling beer brand in the USA. Looking back at how Schlitz belly flopped from #2 to irrelevant in a very brief time frame, there is reason to believe that Bud Light’s brand suicide may also be irreversible.

The Schlitz story is now a famous case study on destroying a brand. Let’s hope that Bud Light’s collapse serves as a warning to corporate America about hiring woke managers who are in service to an agenda that is harmful to their employers’ products.

Just for fun, let’s finish up today with an old commercial featuring Terri Garr explaining how these angry Schlitz drinkers are going to rough you up if you try to take away their gusto.

This is the cultural battle that everyone seems to forget.

Giving up Gillette wasn't about giving up shaving. It was about changing a brand and getting the same results.

It's a boycott that was easy to maintain because it's about creating a new habit around a brand of razor, not about changing behavior completely, and it seems to have worked.

Thus, don't stop going to movies...just skip all of Disney's theatrical product in 2023. If you have to watch the MCU or animated, head to a friend or family's house who has D+ and watch them in a few months.

The enormous loss of theatrical revenue has already started a panic at Disney, and we can keep it up...easily.

9 The interesting thing is that I haven't purchased Bud Light in decades. AB had a partner who made one beer I would buy if I could find it. But that partner withdrew that product from the market years ago.

AB products are swill and I wouldn't drink this swill if they paid me and sent me a six-pack with my face painted on it.

AB hired this lunatic and allowed her to hammer the brand and the company. This is what an Ivy League education buys you these days.

That whole thing is very funny. Illness? Okay, fair enough. But illness has always been with us and always been with the brand.
Lockdowns and travel restrictions? That's no excuse. Online ordering is still very easy and every major outlet carries Gillette products. Financial hardship and preferring a cheaper product is legitimate enough, but they *could* choose to not charge an arm and a leg for the products produced by their man-hating company. As to grooming habits, I doubt it's a factor. If anything, I see fewer beards than I used to. The last two are preposterous.

My brother told a story last night.....Bud Light executives are claiming ignorance with regards to what the VP did with this trans campaign. They're lying.

He worked for Southwestern Bell way back in the day. They were in the middle of a hardware refresh where they were issuing new laptops and PC's to the workforce. The new SBC Logo was the desktop background (wallpaper), but my brother thought it was 'off.' He changed the color slightly as an improvement and went on imaging the machines. The guy that created the new logo happened to be in the same building and after receiving his new laptop, came down to ask who changed the logo. "You can't change a damn thing. Do you know how many hoops and approvals I had to get to make that logo happen?!?"

60 On any thread where Gillette is mentioned, there are always question about who uses what to shave and lots of opinions on the matter. Here's mine.

I like simple cartridge razors. I used to use Gillette razors, until the Mach 3 kept being expensive. I switched to "Dollar Shave Club" for a while and found their four-blade product to be good. They were always very hip and therefore at very least woke-curious, but they went full retard a while back so I dropped them. After doing some homework, I learned that DSC used razors manufactured by a Korean outfit called Dorco. Their four-blade razor I like is called the "Dorco Pace 4" and it is available online in quantity from various outlets. The cartridges are about $1.40 each if you buy in bulk (16 or more). I get about a year's worth at a time.

I'm happy with them, and they don't break the bank and they don't proselytize wokeness at me at every possible opportunity. I'd rather buy foreign than buy domestic woke.

72 Corporate "America" has somehow become convinced to help WEF types destroy the West via this Woke Poison.

It may be that all those bailouts and policy the rewarded the rich (and stole from the middle class) ... has made the Uber Rich powerful enough to control corporate boardrooms.

The other aspect is BigGov is owned by the WEF types, and they also support Woke. So Fauci controls what research gets funded, and only the Woke get funding. That now means trans friendly, and "carbon neutral" compliant.

China has control as well, but they also want destruction of The West. Hard to see real change any time soon, without catastrophe ... but "they" have a plan for that ... "Trust the Plan". heh

Alinsky tactics are helpful in this. When everything is woke, that merely means that it's a target-rich environment.

Pick a target. It can even be arbitrary. Pick the target, isolate it, destroy it. One at a time until it becomes dangerous.

With the Bud Light debacle, the market has sort of spontaneously (so far) done this all on its own.

======

Gonna use this to go OT.

I think Picard Season 3 might be anti-progressive. I've had suspicions since the first handful of episodes where it became obvious that it was a remake of the TNG episode Conspiracy where Starfleet has been taken over by people who want to destroy it from the inside. That coming out in 2023 feels very on point from a conservative point of view about how the US government has been taken over by those who want to destroy the nation. It may just be coincidence, but it was surprisingly on point for that idea.

Then the last couple of episodes happened, and it just seems to have become obvious. (SPOILERS) The Changelings have infiltrated and corrupted the youth of Starfleet through the transporter so that they are all effectively assimilated by the Borg, just waiting for the call to get them going. (SPOILERS END)

That's...really on point for about how the youth have gone mad by an outside force that wants to destroy us from within. No?

Posted by: Jamaica NYC at April 17, 2023 11:23 AM (EDCMj)

Fantasy football and in-game betting is keeping the NFL afloat. Sports has always had its gamblers, but it used to have fans of the actual sport that didn't know jack-squat about point spreads, over/unders or the money lines. They just liked their teams and favorite players.

Increasingly as a percentage of the 'fan' base, no one even cares anymore which team wins anymore, just whether or not their bet pays off or they score points in their league.

That won't last forever. Eventually people will understand you can just watch an AI generated virtual sporting event and have just as much entertainment betting on the outcomes of those as an actual game.

Perhaps brought it to their knees. Time will tell on that.

But she did have a point, buried at the bottom of all the poor decision-making. Bud Light is (was?) the best-selling brand, but that doesn't mean it wasn't on the decline. There is a lot more competition in beer now, and a lot of the old mainline brands are seen either as fogey beer - the stuff your grandpa drinks - or as cheap college beer. Bud Light's market is shrinking and trying to expand that market is difficult.

Spitting in your still vast market's face and pivoting to woke is a stupid idea. A brand in decline is a real problem, but accelerating its demise is stupid.

They created their own line of seltzers to compete in that new market. They named it Bud Light Seltzer. Then they needed to develop an ad campaign around the fact that it wasn't actually Bud Light, modified, because no one was buying it thinking it was flavored beer and disgusting.

217 I cut my teeth on 1970’s NFL. Landry’s Cowboys, the Steel Curtain, Bud Grant’s purple people eaters, Madden’s “just win baby” Raiders, Shula’s Dolphins. Real men playing a rugged (and violent) game… I loved it. Even before Kaepernick came along I was losing interest…. They added tons of rules, the refs became more and more prominent, and the defense could barely breathe on a QB or receiver without getting a penalty. The game changed and I moved on…. The kneeling was just the icing on that cake.

- "Crusher gets attacked by Space Jawas; she kills them."

- "Junkie Guinan and Fake Lou Ferrigno on Blade Runner Planet shoot the shit; she tries to guilt trip a computer"
- "Worf is Junkie Guinan's sponsor"
- "Junkie Guinan cannot act"

Yup. Seeking to expand a brand by marketing to trannies makes sense only if one or both of two things are true:
1. Your current market share is zero, because your product or company is brand new and that is the market you want to sell into. It is a small market, but it can be lucrative because niche markets always are.
2. The addressable market of the virtue-signalling "allies" is huge, *and* that the desire to be seen as an "ally" is so great that it can overcome poor quality.

A lot of these people think that point #2 is true, but it isn't.

245 Realize I'm an old pita but I think there's more thought in these 'processes' than we're presently realizing.

This matter dot com: Communism, also known as a command system, is an economic system where the government owns most of the factors of production and decides the allocation of resources and what products and services will be provided.

We're talking union made & transported beer. The US will likely never be completely all in (as above) but, perhaps, close, until or because it's a different time when things are to be built back better under progressivism.

A Teamster local has just gone on strike in Philly area against the tri-state region's largest Coca-Cola bottler and distributor. That'll be spreading to other locations if contracts are not current.

There are major changes of all type under way in in this country from transporation of all kinds, to non-profit hospitals, certain manufacturing, food production, and more. It's purposeful.

271 People that don't think marketing mistakes are lasting need to look at Subway.

Jared Fogle being a pedo really had nothing to do with the sandwiches or the company. The company didn't endorse pedophilia (though who knows in the future with the way shit is going).

But since his arrest in 2015, they have lost nearly 25% of their US locations.

Are there other factors involved, yes. But there will be other factors involved in Bud Light's demise, too. There was no need for a self-inflicted gut wound. They were losing market share as it was, but not to the point that it required a desperate pivot, they still represented 35% of ABs sales.

I also think there is a misunderstanding about trannyism and Zoomers. Zoomers don't hate trannies as a matter of principle like older generations, but that does not equate to trannies being what Zoomers are really drawn to when being influenced by ads.

They aren't like "Oh hey, tranny! I'll buy that!"

275 The NFL deal will take longer but hear me now, they are in a death spiral.
It's my opinion this is why they have embraced the gambling aspect.
Many football fans are fans because they grew up with fans.
7-10% of households turn it off (one also needs to factor they are now counting seats in bars/restaurants where they didn't before) these kids that would have grown up watching with their parents and family will not. Couple that with the reluctance for many parents to send their kids to have concussions at a young age.
It's going to gut the fan base.
I think they are hoping gambling addicts keep support. It's terrible I know, but to me it explains the seemingly sudden shift by a league to embrace what was previously shunned.

280 The NFL survives on gambling and fantasy leagues - maybe sustainable, but its days as a cultural juggernaut are over

I think every sport is in that situation. Baseball keeps crapping on its fans, but has grown some in viewership over the past couple of years. Some pundits are claiming its because of measures to shorten games, but in truth, almost nothing MLB has done actually shortened the game.

The pitch and batting clock in place has done so this year, but that doesn't explain growth in the past couple years. The truth is that baseball generally is popular with people, but ruins that periodically with strikes and other obnoxious behavior, then has to build up again afterward.

But Rotisserie and other leagues are what is propping them all up. Even the play on the field reflects that, with new stats being ginned up and play focused on certain high value stats for fantasy play like home runs and strike outs.

I would guess that if you asked Bud Light chick if this ploy was successful, she'd start by saying, "We've received incredibly positive feedback since our partnership began!"

This. And gambling. I've no doubt that the actual viewership for sports ball -- the number of people who are watching it because they want to watch it -- is significantly down. But some of that is offset by "artificial" viewers tuning in to see how their bets or fantasy players are doing. I don't know if this is sustainable.

I think long-term, it isn't. The younger generation just isn't as interested in watching sports like the older generations. They have many more things competing for their eyeballs, and they don't have any nostalgia for games like the older generations did.

Happens in government too. The 'best' public schools in many large districts are the ones where the parents have money and social norms are applied. Remove that via random lottery selection or some such, and watch that status decline to the mean.

The large local governments become sclerotic because they simply cannot process needed information effectively due to distortions caused by local grafting machines whether they are unions, big developers, or political skimming.

The foaming goo is okay if you're in time crunch. But shaving creams in a tub or tube, like Tabac or Palmolive, are the best, and pretty cheap.

509 They're not worried at all. If Budweiser was just an independent company like it was years ago they probably would be in trouble. Instead they're a tiny part of a massive conglomerate called InBev. Chances are anyone complaining about Bud Light has likely switched to another InBev product. They could care less about losing money on Bud Light.

595 I hate to contradict you, Buck, but P&G's writedown of $8 billion on Gillette was already in the works before their "toxic masculinity" ad campaign. Gillette was already starting to tank thanks to significant competition from mail-order subscription offerings like Dollar Shave Club and Harry's Razors. Some have speculated that the ad campaign was designed either as a hail-mary to win back younger customers who prefer the convenience of online subscription services, or perhaps simply as a smokescreen to divert investors' attention away from a long-term downward trend in sales by making headlines with a supposed "marketing mistake" that wouldn't be repeated.

That is to say, they were going broke *before* they went woke. Going woke was just an attempt to hide it.

What with low cal low carb beers I should go back to beer instead of the potato juice.

Only way to keep half of them out of jail in some 3rd world hell hole.

673 My first official full beer was a can of Hamm's (the beer refreshing) provided by my uncle on my 16th birthday. Prior to that, I was a heavy "swigger" when bringing to Dad, and my cousins and I purloined a Pfeiffer or two to split in the alley behind my grandparent's house in Minneapolis. Seems like Pfeiffer was a step up from Grain Belt.

674 Yep, I permanently switched from Gillette to Schick. Not going back. Great analysis about how beer switching is vastly different from the NFL or Amazon.

675 They're constantly pushing this lie. No one wants them. They're interesting, but they're toys.

My rich neighborhood is about 5% Teslas.

Probably similar to the Corvettes, Bentleys, Astons, SLs, etc. in other garages and for the same reason.

Toys. The people have real cars (two or three) when they need them.

676 Take the blades and when you screw the fuze into an artillery round, set the blade in it so just a corner sticks out. The round screams like crazy. Bad guys shit their pants.

Fellow Redleg?
Don't come across those very often.
I was on the M110a2 and the M109a3 a lifetime ago.

Never thought about messing with the rounds like that though.

677 Bud Light: what would Don Draper do?

(Well... besides making a creepy crossdressing man who pretends to be a 6yo girl the face of your company.)

679 Pabst shot themselves in the foot about five to 10 years ago when they started marketing to influencers and Gen-Zer's in lieu of their longtime customers. My daughter used to wo sales for Pabst in Los Angeles, and I helped her at an event at the USS Idaho and this guy walks up to us. I hand him a free sample, and he starts to spill his guts about how much he likes Pabst, but was afraid he'd have to find a new beer after the marketing he'd seen online. The guy was definitely a biker, Pony tailed hair, Pabst bandana, his leather vest had Pabst patches on it, he had 12...12 Pabst tattoo's, and was wearing a pabst t-shirt. My daughter told not to give up on the brand, but he really felt betrayed, as did a few other Pabst drinkers (just as many women as men). Pabst has not recovered either.

680 That picture. Of the Tranny in the tub. It speaks more than a million bud light ads. Everything they say and do at this point, someone posts that picture, and it starts all over again.

Say, anyone getting FIRED over this yet?
