I've never heard that complaint from anyone anywhere before the "babes and boobs brouhaha *which hardly sums up 13 years of my posting) and I guess some of the folks are sleeping in and don't see my kick a** joyousness on the tech thread-or at least I post stories of human kindness or funny things or devotionasl which I hope often show joy in God's love for us and joy in a life of faith. Of course, many of us have irritable moments here-me too, of course, as is obvious but then it's only the saints here who will go unnamed for fear of embarrassing them who never say a bad word about anyone, and I am not among their exalted crew. Said they sent me a link in the original email.. they didn't. Said to go to their website and click on it in Quick Links. It's not there. Went to ID.me's website. There are some states that use it but OR is not on the list. I suspect OR doesn't have the money for it or they don't care about fraud. I'm supposed to complete it in 10 days though. Reuters reported a team of scientists at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro are taking dead birds and converting them into drones to study flight. While the bird drones might not be spying, it provides some validity to supporters of the Birds Aren't Real movement. "We came up with this idea that we can use ... dead birds and make them (into) a drone," said Dr. Mostafa Hassanalian, a mechanical engineering professor who is leading the project. "Taxidermy bird drones - currently being tested in a purpose-built cage at the university - can be used to understand better the formation and flight patterns of flocks. That, in turn, can be applied to the aviation industry," said Hassanalian. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at April 17, 2023 08:21 PM (xAJtR) 120

In high school physics we had an old oscillator in class so my buddy brought in his Strat (he was in jazz band) and we plugged in some pedals to demonstrate how fuzz boxes make square waves, how flangers and delays work, etc. I think we explained things much easier to other students than the waste-of-space teacher who was phoning it in. One of the most fascinating aspects of early to mid-century electronics, to me, thus:
The process of figuring out which compounds would do the resisting inside of a resistor. What would hold that charge inside a capacitor, and not let the smoke out. The design of the glowie things inside of a vacuum tube, and what those various excitable metallic pathways mean to the flowing electronics, changing that which enters the tube to something entirely different at the exit. Damn near alchemy, and damn if they didn't make it work. (1st atomic bombs say HI! *loudly*) Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at April 17, 2023 08:54 PM (e6UQI) 210

Twitter was the most powerful censorship and narrative creation machine in the world. I don't we even know just how much it changed the course of the world over the last few years and might not for years if ever. I was thinking of that exact obscure new wave song when I saw the word "oscillator". Nice to know someone else knows that song too!
Posted by: Doof at April 17, 2023 08:49 PM (yUjc0) Makes sense as a new wave song. Before synths went full digital in the mid-80's, you actually had to know how to "build" a sound with their analog counterparts. Start with oscillators and choose your waveform, then ADSR envelopes and other filtering after that. The late-70's to mid-80's really was the heyday for analog synths -- It was after switchboard patch cables were phased out and before the syrupy digital sound became ubitquitous. I got to visit Meteora while I lived in Greece. There are a huge number of those pillars throughout the area, and quite a few have monasteries or the homes of individual monks on top. Very defensible, and a pain to get up to see because women had to wear dresses and be lifted up on rope pulleys. Glad I did it when I was young and agile!

The design of the glowie things inside of a vacuum tube, and what those various excitable metallic pathways mean to the flowing electronics, changing that which enters the tube to something entirely different at the exit. On balance I think he is doing a good job and it sure as hell has cost him to even get this far. Losing $20 billion would put a big hurt on my retirement plans.
____________ True. But "he" is not sitting "on Twitter all day fixing things." There's a staff, employees, whatever for that.
