Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Barefoot GAINZZZHas anyone tried "barefoot shoes"? I've been using them for five months now. I came across these when I was researching an injury. I had twisted my pelvis, with one side rotated forward and lifted upwards above the other one, making that leg short, and making all kinds of PAINZZZ in my back. In my searches for exercises for a twisted pelvis, barefoot shoes came up, and it was claimed that barefoot shoes corrected your gait, and I thought "maybe my gait is all stupid and gay and I need to do conversion therapy on it," so I bought some. I didn't see John Wick 4 so let me review: Barefoot Shoes.Barefoot shoes seek to correct what their designers say are the problems caused by modern shoes. For example, if you walk barefoot, the muscles of your feet are very active and engaged as they change the shape of your foot to grip the ground you're on and adapt to the uneven surface. But if you always wear shoes with hard soles, or very padded foam rubber soles, your feet are always walking on a flat surface, and the muscles of your feet atrophy and lose their ability to shape themselves to grab the ground. This, they claim, is what leads to fallen or weak arches -- the muscles of the feet have lost their tone. They don't need to work like they were built to, so they don't. Another claim -- which I think is conceded even by people who don't recommend barefoot shoes -- is that a heavily padded heel changes the natural human gait. If your heel is very padded, then you'll just walk on your heels, swinging one leg forward, tilting forward, landing on the heel, then swinging the other leg forward, etc. The padded heel lets you do this without hurting your heel and sending a shock through your leg. The natural human gait is designed for the foot to hit the ground not with the heel but the mid-foot, or shading into the fore-foot if on rough ground. Hitting with the midfoot makes the foot act as a sort of shock absorber as it lands, not all at once as with heel-strike walking, but a little at at time. Also, toes are not meant to just sit as a slab in five part and move as a unit. They're supposed to move independently, again to grip the ground and navigate uneven surfaces. Modern shoes put toes on a flat sole, and then packed together in a tight toe-box at the front of the shoe -- instead of letting them splaying out in a more monkey-like way. So barefoot shoes, or minimal shoes, seek to correct those three claimed problems. They have a very minimal sole, sometimes as thin as 5 mm, so your foot is basically almost naked to the ground. They have a "zero drop," which is way of saying the heel is not built up so that the sole has a chunky wedge-like shape. Zero drop means the heel is no more elevated from the ground than the toes; there's "zero drop" from where the heel is held to where the toes are held. Finally they have a wide toe box (and sometimes even separate compartments for each toe, which seems like overkill to me) to let your toes Really Explore the Studio Space. The trouble with the shoes is, of course: They've got barely any padding. That's the whole point, yes, but still: They've barely got any padding. One guy I listened to conceded yes, we used to walk differently barefoot, but that was on soft natural surfaces like the grassy earth. Now we can barely get to grassy areas. We walk and run on concrete. So we have to add the softness of the primitive earth's surface into the soles of our shoes. And that's a point. One guy I listened to emphasized that the average person's feet are just not ready at the moment to start logging miles on concrete and asphalt, and that if someone rushes to barefoot shoes without giving the feet a chance to adapt and build up that atrophied musculature, there's a big risk of injury. I jumped right into barefoot shoes and thankfully did not get injured. But my feet were feeling very tired and beat-up after a couple of months. I'm now following the advice I read later: Cut your miles by 10%. Then only use barefoot shoes for about 20% of your miles for the first month, using normally-padded shoes for the other 80%. The next month, change the proportion to 40% and 60%. And then do 60% of your miles in the barefoot shoes, taking a break by doing the other 40% in regular shoes. Give the feet the time to recover and adapt. Until you're finally at 100% barefoot. I backed off doing 100% barefoot and now do 50% barefoot. I'm now switching between barefoot shoes and regular shoes every other run. I do my harder running with the fully-padded shoes. Does any of this Trendy Bullshit have any validity? I'm not sure. Here's what I've noticed: I've had plantar's fasciitis which would flare up painfully every other month or so. Since I've been wearing barefoot shoes, I've actually haven't had any plantar's fasciitis pain. I have to point out, though, that I wear Easy Feet insoles with a high arch in them inside the barefoot shoes, making them slightly less barefoot. Are my arches building back up? I don't know how to measure that, but, maybe? Another point people make is that once you start wearing barefoot shoes a lot, your sensation in your feet starts becoming more acute, as your body starts analyzing nerve input from the feet. This may be the placebo effect, but yes, I've definitely noticed that my feet now feel the ground much more than they used to. They used to be Meat Slabs that my legs moved; now they're more sensory. You might now say: Hey dummy, I could not possibly care less about how sensitive to stimulus my feet are. If you thought this would convince me, you are stupider than you look and you look pretty dumb already. And, well: Fair point. I never once in my life thought, "Boy, I sure do wish I had greater capacity for sensation in my feet." But I'm pointing it out, just because it's something that the advocates of barefoot shoes promised, and I think it's actually true. But that might just be the power of suggestion. The good news, even if it's just the power of suggestion, no one cares if their feet are sensitive to stimulus or not so it doesn't matter. It literally does not matter and no one cares. As far as my twisted pelvis: Well, no one ever said barefoot shoes would fix that, and they weren't lying when they didn't say that. I don't think barefoot shoes has fixed my pelvis. I think the problem is that I have an incredibly sedentary job which makes my hip and buttock muscles very weak and then when I go out and exert myself my pelvis is free to get up to all sorts of foolishness, and it does. I haven't twisted my pelvis bad since the injury, but then, I'm going to a chiropractor periodically to get it pulled back into the proper alignment. To actually fix that, I think I just have to do deadlifts and all sorts of stretching and basic daily calesthenics that I do from time-to-time but just can't stay consistent about. Drawbacks: There is no getting around the fact that you are essentially barefoot, and you will feel that when you're on concrete. I personally flinch from running hard on concrete. I just don't think my feet are padded enough to take a real pounding. I occasionally sprint on asphalt, which has more give, but in general, I've slowed down in running just because I'm not sure my almost-29 joints can take it. Maybe I can and it would all be fine if I just did it, but I have a mental block stopping me from doing that. I don't want to FAFO. Also, your walk/run times will definitely be worse. By 10% or more. Heel-strike running or walking may not be natural, but it's a fast gait. You don't run that way in barefoot shoes; you are more on the balls of your feet. So your times will get slower. I'm not sure this matters, because exercise is still exercise even when done with a handicap, but I thought you should know. If you want to try this Pointless Gimmick: I picked up a super-cheap pair from Amazon for $39, a brand called Oranginer. I walked and ran with them for about two months. I saw a YouTuber recommend Within shoes as the best of all the cheap options -- in fact, this was his second favorite shoe -- so I picked up a pair of those. They're $43 on Amazon. I got the Within Minimalist (or Barefoot) Trail-Runners. I've used those for three months. They're both good. And obviously these are not very expensive, so it's a fairly cheap experiment to run. Because they have almost no sole as it is, you can expect a pair to run out in six months to a year of heavy use. There's no way around this; rubber ablates with use, and there's just not a lot of rubber on these shoes to lose before you get a hole. Neither of my pairs ran out, but I haven't used either for six months. So, would I recommend them? I kinda would. Not because I can swear they've definitely improve anything (though I do think maybe my arches are stronger now), but because... I mean, an experiment for $43 is a cheap experiment. Just don't go hog-wild in your first few weeks. I do enjoy running up trails and hills and being able to feel the ground and treeroots. Maybe that's just placebo effect, but if a placebo effect makes you enjoy something a bit more, it's a positive placebo effect.

It's such a pain in the ass, though, to take it off the wall and just drill new holes six inches above the old ones. I just keep putting it off. I probably never will. It's currently "Fine." I do not think I could wear barefeet shoes in the NYC environs. 100% concrete with a plethora of other things that can do bodily harm.
I am also flat footed, my arches have fallen like the GOPe's libido. Can these shoes really help build them up again? My foot surgeon told me, after the surgery, "No more bare feet." Of course, he's likely to have seen a lot of damage to feet--most seen, he said, in women wearing high heels, men in work boots, and people in general wearing flip flops. He suggested clogs to make my feet muscles work, and thick-soled shoes, to protect them. No bare feet--thinking of all the pointy things you can step on...

Good back posture will almost always result in a better gait and stride. Learn to stand and walk with what one might call "Military Bearing", and do so until your muscles become used to it.
Bonus. Your clothes will fit and hang better on your frame. Final tip: Study the wear patterns on the soles of the shoes you most often wear. How you're walking, right or wrong, is clearly evident, there. I have been running in Vibram 5 finger shoes for 20 years. It took about 6 months and 200 miles to get my feet, ankles and quads up to strength. Running up hill barefoot is very natural to me because my heel never really lands. Going downhill is much harder because nothing slows you down except your quads. No knee or back pain from running. I prefer to run on asphalt because there are fewer things to get stuck between my toes.

I also have some Vibram 5fingers and some Lems boots. The Lems are comfy, but the traction is not nearly as good as the Merrell and 5fingers.

I have one of those. But I always forget that I have one. I'll leave work for the day and think, "shit! I forgot to use my stand up desk today."
That is simple. Get a drafting table chair or simply replace the gas cylinder on your desk chair with an 18" version. Jack your desk up and climb on to your chair or just simply stand. When sitting and standing are the same height it gets more convenient to "remember" to stand. Posted by: Reuben Hick at May 05, 2023 04:30 PM (YXHzG) 98

Human feet evolved to support walking upright on bare ground, i.e,. non-hard-packed dirt, and sandy soil. All non-fashion shoes and all sandals have always tried to find a way to support the entire foot and protect the sole so as to be comfortable walking and running on hard surfaces.

Alright, so here's my review: Maybe?
About ten years ago, we tried the barefoot shoes (Vibrams were the main brand at the time) and had mixed results. Pooky couldn't wear them for his PT test, so he was limited in when he could wear them. I have feet "flatter than a duck's" and I found it to be painful if I walked in them for more than a mile on concrete. We lived on an Air Force Base, so just about everything was concrete or grass that you couldn't walk on because it was to be kept pristine. They felt wonderful for areas like trails and yards, but again, we had limited opportunity for those. I've mounted things on the wall before & it seems like I spend a lot of my time finding the studs. If you just have to move something up a few inches, the good news is that you don't have to locate a new stud. It's still work, but it shouldn't be as bad as mounting something new. I developed intense bursitis in my knees three times in my life -- ROTC, airborne school, Signal Officer Basic Course. Doc at SOBC said it was because I was running in formation at an unnatural gait/stride. He put me on "profile" (no formation running). I couldn't run at all until a month before our final PT test (5 month course) but I could bike forever. I ended up maxing the 2 mile run (barely) and winning best APFT score (helped by doing 99 pushups where the "max" was 80). The reason why I didn't get bursitis in basic training? They gave me boots 1.5 sizes too small and I got tendonitis so I couldn't run in formation....

Oh man. I haven't posted here forever but I'm drinking and it's a GAINZZ thread.
First. I actually was doing barefoot jogging. I started walking barefoot taking the dog for his walks. I kept intentionally walking on stones to toughen myself up. Eventually, I'd jog in the park barefoot. I'd run around the edges of the park, through the trees and brush. My feet were pretty tough and able to take it. But it was a hell of a workout when your feet were constantly adapting to the ground every step. Very invigorating. I started running on the streets in our small town. Cop car pulled me over. Second cop car arrived. They received concerns. This was before Covid. So I encountered Karens before there were Karens. I find I've become more of an introvert as I get older. I can function as an extrovert and have to in worship or Bible study, but I was always quiet as a kid and I also attended Quaker meeting as a teen where if nobody gets up to speak or witness it's just quiet and waiting on the Lord because they have no clergy or order of worship. So I'd probably have no problem going to a Tribal meeting where people didn't speak for a long time-as long as I know what that was the procedure. I seem to attract extroverts in my ministry and sometimes they never stop talking and it can be exhausting even though I love them.

"Convict Conditioning" is a fantastic book.
Six body weight exercises to exercise all major muscle groups. Each exercise is broken down into 10 different exercises. You slowly progress through each until you are doing one armed push-ups, one armed pull-ups, handstands, etc. These were the same exercises done for 1000s of years creating the strongest warriors and strongmen before the ad people sold us on weights and machines. I'm on step 2 for the first 4 exercises and am feeling more ripped than I ever did with weights. The movements are all how the body moves naturally, no weights means no damage to the joints. Great book. I got rid of all of my free weights. I'm pissed we weren't taught all of these exercises in school but no government wants an entire population of people that can lift their own body weight one armed. Every person could be a potential weapon. Posted by: Stateless at May 05, 2023 04:53 PM (jvJvP) 220

Our Future:
South Africans must start thinking about total grid collapse Several South African insurers — including the state-owned Sasria that covers special risks like riots, strikes, and terrorism — are excluding damages related to the possible failure of Eskom’s national grid. If the grid collapses, GIB Insurance Brokers says it would likely result in a catastrophic event with possible looting and civil unrest, which could lead to severe infrastructure damage across the country. GIB sales operation consultant Guy Jameson says insurance companies have no choice but to view a total grid failure as an uninsurable risk. https://tinyurl.com/yc2spzv9 Posted by: The ARC of History! at May 05, 2023 04:58 PM (2tUFv) 243

I doubt there is any health benefit, and claims that there are appear to have a very tenuous link to logic and certainly no proof. Some of you may remember that I was having neck problems that seem to get fixed by a neurological chiropractor. Problem is they never actually fix anything. They want you to keep coming back on a regular basis to be 'adjusted". This did not work for me. I started sitting in the sauna after swimming and doing my neck exercises in the heat. I've had plantar's fasciitis which would flare up painfully every other month or so.
--------- 30 years ago I started training for a marathon and, owing to high arches, developed plantar fasciitis. I walked around in pain for 2 years, and all an MD did was cortisone shots and suggested surgery. A coworker turned me on to a sports chiropractor who could adjust feet (there's something like 26 bones in each foot, and mine were all locked up). I was pain-free in 2 weeks and ran a marathon a year later. At about this time Mark McGwire retired early from MLB because of chronic plantar fasciitis, and I told my sports chiropractor that he might have been able to extend his career with treatment. that to me is the best part. I do feel more secure on slopes, too. Part of the selling point of this type of shoe is that it forces you to plot you steps more. I mean, most people don't want to think about that so this isn't a selling point. But I like going up on rough and broken ground. A conventional shoe would be worse in some cases, because your foot can't adapt to what it's stepping on. Posted by: ace at May 05, 2023 05:09 PM (iHBZj) 294

Meh. Barefoot shoes are merely the lastest scammy fad to help shoe companies sell more shoes. Remember those ugly “toed” shoes that were the fad maybe 10 years ago? For some very few people with perfect physiology and running/walking form, barefoot shoes might make sense. But for the vast majority of normal people? Pass.
Same with ski boots. Companies love to sell expensive ‘race” style boots with very stiff structures and very tight dimensions. For truly expert skiers they do drive the skis quicker and more precise. But for 90% of skiers the cheaper, softer boots are much better. Posted by: Elric Blade at May 05, 2023 05:12 PM (INaSe) 303

I'm going to get back to running in a while. I was never a 'serious' runner but I was a crazy guy who did build up to 2.5 to 3 hours, 3 times a week. I'd run to the next small towns around us and back.
Knees were never too much a problem, no matter what I wore. I was up to an hour when I realized I needed new shoes. The guy at the store literally asked "You're running an hour in those?" They were just shoes I had around. I moved on to Saucony, which are fine - comfortable and affordable. I'm convinced walking and jogging barefoot helped make my knees to be stronger. The "Convict Conditioning" book has 1-Legged Squats as the final move. I'm not going to run very far again until I get through most of the steps. I'm on Step 2, Jackknife Squats. I did 3 sets of 40 squatting all the way. I've never squatted that low, ever. I felt it in my knees yesterday but am fine today. There's benefits to working out all of these muscles that never get worked out. Posted by: Stateless at May 05, 2023 05:22 PM (jvJvP) 336

>>>Apparently we're supposed to walk using our butt- who knew! Try activating your glutes for each step instead of relying on your knees. I've been trying it for about a week and it seems to help where my lower back pinches and gets tight. At first, the gait makes you look like you have to poop, but it gets more natural.
well the barefoot shoes are supposed to force you to do that. How are you doing it? I can't tell if I'm activating my butt more or not. Posted by: ace at May 05, 2023 05:28 PM (iHBZj) 347

I've not gone to barefoot shoes, but I switched from my usual office shoe - a thick soled walking shoe recommended by a nurse I know - to skateboard shoes. Originally it was because my favorite shoe went all neon and bling and I couldn't find one in a black or subdued color. So I tried some skate shoes and settled on Adidas Daily over Vans and Sketchers. I did notice more pain at first, but then more sensation and feel. I go barefoot at home so it's not like my feet are shoe-clad 16 hours a day. I think the skate shoes strike a medium between the fully padded walking shoes and the super-thin soled barefoot shoes, but that is just IMHO.

Zero drop was all the rage 10 years ago. I think the trend has dropped off for running, but it's definitely the way to go for weightlifting.

I ordered the xero from Moosejaw since no one else had size 15. (my foot grew two sizes a couple decades ago, which I think is common ... flattening or something?) $95 with tax but I like the moccasin type shoes anyway, and usually wear them around the farm instead of more protective boots.
Rolling an ankle on rough ground can be an issue, but I've done it so often my ankles seem to handle it well. But I don't run. protecting the knees is important ... and all body parts really. Unless I absolutely HAVE TO walk on asphalt or concrete in this weather, I am barefoot ALL the time. I really don't like wearing shoes 'cos they cut off my sensation of what the surface I'm walking on is like. If I have to go out (shopping, etc) then, yes, I wear shoes - but I wear NO socks and I put on the pair with the thinnest soles I can find. Now it almost feels unnatural when I'm "shoed" ...

I'm ending this thread with bodyweight exercises. The six exercises that created the Spartans. There were no pretty weights back then.
Step by step...10 of them...starting off from the simplest exercises, to one armed push-ups, one-legged squats, one-armed pull-ups and 3 more. "Convict Conditioning" by Paul Wade. The goal is strength. The guy spent 20 years in prison, learned a ton of the old bodyweight exercises people used to do to become strong without equipment and taught these exercises to guys who needed to get strong fast in the joint. Starting out, 4 exercises a week. 2 on Monday, 2 Thursday...or whenever. Dude shatters all of the body building bullshit. Posted by: Stateless at May 05, 2023 06:59 PM (jvJvP) 359

A canadian hockey player I knew a long time ago traveled from Finland to Tallinn, in Estonia when the USSR still controlled that country.
There, he got roaring drunk and pissed all over the Soviet War Memorial. He had to be hustled onto a boat and sent back to Helsinki before the Russkis got their hands on him. (But to the Estonians he was a hero.) Posted by: Noam Sayen at May 05, 2023 07:47 PM (QYBVy) 361
I've been wearing shoes from Sense of Motion (SOM) for almost three years now. I'm on my second pair. They aren't "barefoot shoes" but they are zero drop and they have a wide toe box. They are also one of the few shoe manufacturers who are 100% made in the USA.
I've had issues with my feet since I was a kid. I have an extra bone in my foot, and so my feet are much wider than normal to begin with and after having kid #5, it just didn't seem that any of the normal wide width shoes were wide enough. I stumbled across SOM in looking for non-Chinese brands. The difference has been incredible! I no longer put my balance on the outsides of my feet, but across the whole foot. This has led to a lot less random tripping on nothing. The wide toe box is amazing! They hold up well, and if you buy a new pair, they'll resole your older pair for free and ship both back together. That being said, they are walking and trail shoes, not running shoes. I definitely recommend them, though! Posted by: Katja at May 05, 2023 09:59 PM (GDvjU) 362
A note on the SOMs... They're not particularly cheap (my last pair was $130) but they've held up better than any pair of everyday shoes I've ever had. The first pair I had lasted two years (resoled once) and the second pair is getting to the point of needing a resole, but it's been a good year. With other gym shoes, a lot of times, I'd wear them out in six months to a year, so it's pretty even, I guess.

I've been trying barefoot shoes for a couple of months to help with the arthritis in my knees. They were helping my knees but at the expense of my feet. Because of the lack of cushioning. So, I did some more web sleuthing, and came across this company called Altra. They make zero drop, wide toe box, shoes with running shoe type cushioning. I'm only a week into wearing them but, so far, they've been what I was initially searching for.
