Choosing the Dinner
Alexandre-Louis Leloir

I like this piece, but another artwork has been in the news...a sculpture by some 23-year old guy named Michelangelo. Unfortunately photos of his sculpture of the biblical David don't do it justice. Nor do photos of his other famous piece called "Pieta." That one might be even better!

Here is a link to a video . It's a travelogue by Rick Steve, who is sort of irritating, but the view of the sculpture is good. And here is one of The Pieta after they relit it with modern lighting.

Let's not forget Rodin, who in spite of being a Frog could sculpt with the best of them.

There's another pasta eater named Donatello, whose version of David is quite different, but just marvelous.

So what's the connection between current events and three great sculptors? They all showed the genitalia of some of their subjects. Was it sexual? No*. Is it appropriate for children to see? I think the answer is yes, but my opinion means nothing, and the parents' decision is the only one that matters.

Anyway, it's an interesting topic, but arguing about what sculpture is the greatest in the world might be fun too!

*Although...I was in the Rodin Museum in Paris last summer and I photographed one of his pieces that struck me as discordant because of its overt sexuality. But that was the only one.

11 UT used to have the best collection of replicated statues. Sometimes, during the 1880 or 90s it was very popular for art school to go make plater molds of famous works and then used those to cast plaster replicas.

Not the real thing but it gives you the scale of the work.

48 One more reason why I'm glad to have bee born when I was -- I think I'd have starved to death when faced with the menus of previous generations. Of course, I'd probably choose the heron stew this cook came up with over the 3-D printed meat patties awaiting the coming generation's dinner plates.

(And we thought knowing what was in processed chicken nuggets was disgusting.)

One thing Still should be commended for: when he created the museum, he insisted that they rotate the displays so that all works are shown -- none of that storing art in the museum basement for years, decades, not allowing anyone to see it crap most museums engage in (looking at you, Denver Art Museum w/your hidden quilt collection).

93 The painting is interesting on several levels. I like the way the artist used the brighter colors of the figures to stand out against the comparatively drab (not boring) browns of the building and grounds. Their postures also make them stand out against the mostly straight lines that predominate. I like the level of detail. It gives it the feel of the still life Dutch painters of an earlier time. The realism and detail of the animals reinforce that feel. It would be easy to imagine a narrative based on this image. Very effective and enjoyable. (Even without the boobs from last week.)

many sculptors, possible all made terra cotta studies of their larger works

I own a few, they are somewhat valuable. However if they you able to somehow tie them to a well known finished product, their value would soar

there are many terra cotta pieces attributed to people like Clodion etal but they are just recast bullshit

He said, “The 2 biggest impediments to a conviction of Trump over the hush money payment are 1) Michael Cohen's 15 months of lies during 2017-18 when he called me a liar and claimed it was entirely his idea and Trump knew nothing and 2) his recent TV interviews for his own ego.”

As for Trump’s lawyer, Avenatti said, “Attorney Joe Tacopina is no Rudy Giuliani/Sydney Powell. The guy knows his way around a criminal courtroom. He will destroy Michael ‘Dumb as a Box of Rocks’ Cohen on the stand, especially seeing as Cohen publicly lied for 15 months and now won’t stop talking on TV.”

144 84 ... "My favorite Rodin is "The Gates of Hell."

Kris,
I got the chance to see it fairly close up when some Rodin sculptures were exhibited in Washington, DC. I still think it would take several lifetimes to view it properly and understand all the nuances. To a layman like myself, it seemed to involve every technique and artistic feel Rodin used in his career.

The Burghers of Calais piece is a close second. What Rodin did with shape, light reflecting surfaces, and varied poses is magnificent.

That is a neat case study of how context affects an artwork's meaning. Originally made for Rodin's "Gates of Hell", the two lovers are the ill-fated Paolo and Francesca. Notice in the sculpture their lips do not touch. They never even tasted the fruits of their betrayal. The work is a tragedy. Removed from the "Gates", they become anonymous lovers leaning in, giving the viewer the sensual anticipation of intense passion.

Agreed, "The Burgers of Calais" is another great piece. The figures are life-size or near life-size. It was also supposed to be set at street-level, not on a pedestal. The viewer was supposed to walk up to it and around it, to relate to it on a personal level. It shows heroes as human beings acting nobly instead of romanticizing them like in classicism. It was a more realistic image. Rodin's patrons hated it.

196 Post # 181-and the response by the career coach was pretty funny as well:

Welcome back to the office, everyone. It's not as if they created one of the most popular shows on television, "The Office," because people loved working in one. As for your refrigerator caper mystery, does it make you feel any better to know that employee theft in general is on the rise as more people come back to the office. Everything from office supplies to your refrigerator items. Perhaps ask the boss to remind everyone to respect others' property and food.Or you could try attaching a small cannister of exploding red dye so that you can identify the culprits. Not sure that will get support from the higher ups, but I bet it would be funny, if nothing else.

199 Morning again, all! I had to run over to the post office to mail a certified letter to my apartment complex. The law here in this mostly-benighted state allows tenants to make repairs to their apartments and deduct the cost from their rent if the landlord does not. So I'm not asking the so-called management to do that, I'm quoting the law and telling them this is how it will be. ('Tis nice having a law school graduate girlfriend who studied the peculiar civil code here.)

209 A federal prosecutor admitted in court papers that three D.C. Metropolitan Police Department undercover officers acted as provocateurs at the northwest steps of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The admission came in a March 24 filing before U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras that seeks to keep video footage shot by the officers under court seal. Prosecutors accused the case defendant—William Pope of Topeka, Kansas—of an “illegitimate” attempt to unmask the video as part of his alleged strategy to try the case in the news media. Pope filed a motion to remove the court seal on Feb. 21.

Also, despite Rick Stevens in one, enjoyed the videos about the (largely) biblical sculptures. Are those featured appropriate for children? Yes, IMHO. There are interesting stories behind them, learning about the artists and sculpture, placement and lighting, etc. I've seen kids reactions where they, especially young males, were way more put off by paintings by some great artists, such as some works by S. Dali, v. distinctive bodies or parts thereof in bronze. Thank you.

He continued to harangue the public in Churchillian tone ‘Your kettle, your washing machine, your cooker, your heating, your plug-in electric vehicle – the whole lot of them will get their juice cleanly and without guilt from the breezes that blow around these islands.’ He was describing Government policy to expand existing offshore wind power from the existing capacity of 10.4 GW by an additional 40 GW, in addition to the already installed onshore capacity of 13.6 GW. The significant word in the announcement was ‘could’. Evidently, offshore wind might provide such lighting in the UK – sometimes. But Great Britain needs reliable energy all the time. British consumers should follow the example of Alice who, in negotiating terms with the White Queen, insisted on clarification of the day on which jam should be delivered.7 Evidently, they should not look to wind power for reliable energy, but elsewhere.

China realizes a capture of Taiwan is just a useful domestic political rallying cry. If they tried it they's lose a ton of assets in the process, and if successful would have nothing left worth having.

272 What's going on in Israel? Are they getting a color revolutioned?
--

(February 17, 2023 / JNS) The Movement for Quality Government (MQG) in Israel is the far-left organization at the epicenter of the Israeli left’s war against the Netanyahu government.. But under the law, all registered nonprofits are required to report funding they receive from foreign governments. So MQG’s only named donor on its annual reports is the U.S. State Department.

According to MQG’s annual reports, for the past three years the State Department has been funding its programs for “democracy education” in Israeli high schools. Since MQG’s primary activity is subverting democracy in Israel by waging lawfare and sowing chaos in a bid to block democratically elected right-wing governments from fulfilling their pledges to voters, it’s fairly clear that when MQG refers to “democracy education,” it doesn’t mean majority rule.

The only exception to being held in custody without a trial constitutionally is under civil contempt of court (can be held up to one year minus one day). Judges of all stripes have a bailiff and the judges themselves have almost plenary authority in a courtroom similar to ship captain's at sea.

Lesson--never play games in a courtroom. Those stunts don't play at the appellate level either--appellate judges are like Queen Victoria. Not amused.

Blowing up Taiwan's chip fab plants essentially ends the world economy within a couple of weeks.

So seeing as we have maniacs running the world right now, I rate the potential for this future hellscape becoming a reality at 50/50.

And that's not good.

Well, hooters is a normal expression of heterosexuality -- men like to see pretty, fit waitresses in skimpy uniforms.

Drag shows are normalizing deviancy and the "queering" of our children.

It's about recruiting the next generation to the LGBTQ army.

For the most part, activists and judges are not the same sort of personality even of those on the left. Several reasons are the strict hierarchy of judges, the careerist aspirations to rise, and that being a judge at most levels is damned hard bureaucratic slogging through endless motions and evidence filed. These are typically the beta plodders at school that work hard to dot every I and cross every T. They are in fact a bureaucrat's exemplar.

Activists are generally people that do not play well with others and on the bench generally have short lived careers. They are tolerated if they behave themselves as lawyers before the court.
