California's AG Has a Theory About Who's to Blame For the Skyrocketing Rates of Car Theft That Have Occurred On His Watch

No, it's not his fault, nor California's political class for voting to make "minor" thefts of $950 or less misdemeanors which aren't even prosecuted as misdemeanors. (What's the point?)

Thereby cultivating a Culture of Criminality.

No, California's AG -- the "man" California elected to prosecute crime -- knows who the real culprit is.

The real villain here is auto manufacturers, for making cars that are so tempting, and so easy, to steal.

California attorney general Rob Bonta (D.) is blaming car manufacturers for the spike in car thefts that has occurred on his watch.

In a letter to Hyundai and Kia, Bonta and 22 other attorneys general on Monday claimed the carmakers helped fuel a national car theft epidemic by not installing engine immobilizers to certain vehicle models. The letter notes that over the past two years, carjacking teens launched viral TikTok tutorials on how to override certain Kia and Hyundai security devices.

But Bonta has done little to offset his state's rise in car thefts. The attorney general boasted in 2022 that while homicides, property crime, and violent crime went up during his first year on the job, arrest rates and probation levels declined. Since taking office in 2021, Bonta has focused his efforts on investigating police and suing cities over their zoning policies as car thefts and violent crime mount. As a state legislator, Bonta helped secure softer sentencing laws and reduced jail time for felons.

According to Bonta's office, Kia and Hyundai cars made up about 20 percent of Los Angeles auto thefts last year and 38 percent of those in Berkeley since the end of 2022. He and his fellow attorneys general are demanding Kia and Hyundai speed an update to anti-theft software, as well as develop "free alternative protective measures" for those with vehicle models that do not support the technology.

But California led the nation in car thefts and saw a major spike in 2021, when a vehicle was stolen every three minutes, according to a state report listing Honda Civics as the top target. While the state has yet to compile data for 2022, the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that car thefts rose again.

The article notes that thieves have been stealing catalytic converters. Which, if I remember right, contain platinum.

Instead of just increasing the penalties for stealing a catalytic converter, Gavin Newsom restricted the sale and purchase of used catalytic converters. So if you're a car owner and selling your junker for pieces, your right to sell the catalytic converter is restricted, while the criminals are permitted to keep on stealing.

The Democrats know their voter are disproportionately vile parasitic criminals and will countenance absolutely no action against them. They also know that Republicans are largely law-abiding, and so they throw all the impositions on them.

Just as they do with guns, obviously. They won't prosecute felons for felonies -- which would bar them from purchasing guns on the legal market -- instead letting violent drug dealers down to misdemeanors.

Then they demand that lawful gun owners be forced to give up their guns. Just so they have something to say if anyone in the media asks, "Well wait, why aren't you just prosecuting criminals for felonies, which would reduce their access to guns?"

But don't worry -- no one in the media actually ever asks that.

Via David Strom who mentioned it in passing in discussing the San Francisco police commissioner who told citizens emotionally distressed about being victimized by crime to toughen up, and to accept constant theft and threat of violence by Democrat Voters as a "basic city experience" that should be tolerated or even celebrated.

There has been a lot of Democrat/leftist agitation that "real city life" should be filled with hold-ups, hookers, and heroin needles, and that life in 1970s-era crime infested hellholes was the "real [insert city name here]," and that the cleaned up "safe for Disney" cities that Republican policies and stern policing ushered in during the 90s just aren't authentic, hip, and cool.

And how long will Democrat Voters continue accepting that being mugged or burlarized or even r@ped is just part of the "Democrat Cool" vision of cities as dystopian hellholes which will produce great junkie poets?

Many of them will accept it forever.

But Asians, at least, are warning Democrats that they are not going to continue accepting that it's a "basic city experience" that Asians will be hunted by human predators on the streets just because Democrats refuse to lock violent felons up.

John Sexton notes that CNN refuses to use the word "woke" here, but that's what Asians are warning Democrats about.

Supervisor Joel Engardio, a gay married man who by most national standards is a liberal, describes himself as a moderate in San Francisco. And he is quick to criticize the word "progressive."

"To me, progressive is forward thinking, moving into the future and building a better city," said Engardio from his San Francisco City Hall office. "For too long, we have not followed that definition of progressive. Progressive is a city that works and functions and builds toward the future."...

"We should all pay attention that San Francisco, the most liberal place in America, is saying enough. We want safe streets. We want good schools. That should tell anyone -- pay attention," said Engardio.

12 The fault is on the manufacturers for failing to make an unstealable car!

There was something like this in the 90s with Acuras and Hondas. There was a lot of parts commonality so there was a healthy market in used parts, and a demand for some of the higher-end Acura engines to drop into rice-racer Hondas. For a while, the Civic and its Acura counterpart were often the most-stolen cars in the country.

Odd that back then, DAs didn't blame Honda for failing to make their popular cars unstealable.

Such utter bullshit. Immobilizers are available if the customer wants to pay for them. If not, then not. But this didn't "fuel" a national car theft "epidemic." This lack of immobilizers in many models is *exploited* by those causing the "national" (actually, big blue cities with Soros DAs where crime is legal) car theft surge.

Hyundai/Kia is not "fueling" increased car thefts, Hyundai/Kia owners are asymmetrically damaged by increased car thefts because the cars are often easy targets. These are not at all the same things, and they claim these guys are making is asinine BS.

There's several precious metals in catalytic converters IIRC such as palladium, platinum, and rhodium. Those metals can net a thief a few hundred bucks from the CC from "normal" car models and a few thousand from hybrid car models.

I live and work in Louisiana and the institution I work in has circulated several alerts over the past 2 years about people targeting CCs. They've now graduated to outright car theft based on the latest alert that was circulated.

The internal migration of the past few years obviously has a different root cause than the migration that sent well off Californians to Colorado in the 00s.

They were moving from a position of strength, reacting to high property values in CA and low property values in CO to take advantage of their relative financial positions.

The past three years has seen crime explode in blue enclaves. That's going to invite a different line of thinking from those looking to get out, at least on average.

As to Hyundai and Kia: I'm a happy Hyundai owner. My car is too old for the USB key trick, so I'm good. I do wish that the companies would, voluntarily, either do a recall, or at least offer for sale a fix kit to owners.

The cat converter thieves are EXTREMELY organized.

My SUV got hit about 9 years ago. When I noisily drove it in to the muffler shop to get it replaced, I pulled into the parking lot at about 7:30am. There were already two guys ahead of me with missing cat converters, and 4 more came in while I was getting everything written up. Ended up having to wait 2 weeks with a bypass pipe installed to get the replacement.

Turns out that it was a gang from Los Angeles who had come up to Santa Barbara, and they'd stolen over 90 cat converters in two nights. You don't steal that many unless you have a way to sell them, which means a scrap yard or recycling center is in on the crime. They're not "buying" the cats, and the thieves aren't "selling" them.

Gov HairGel can sign whatever sales ban he wants, it's irrelevant.

187 By the way, a little history lesson that many if not most of you know, but everyone needs to know, so pass it on.

The name bolshevik means majority party, and the name menshivik means minority party, after the revolution.

The bolsheviks were the minority party by numbers, and the mensheviks were the majority. The bolsheviks gave themselves that name, and used fraud and intimidation to take power, and then killed or imprisoned the mensheviks, so that they were now truly the majority party.

Apply that logic to the democrats, and how they treat elections and the justice system in this country, and the republicans, who pretend it isn't happening.

191 I was on a call not too long ago with a colleague who lives in San Francisco.

He was complaining that the FedEx guy left a package at the bottom of the stairs to the sidewalk instead of up by the front door. He saw the delivery on his surveillance cameras - which everyone has because crime is so rampant - and he went down to retrieve it immediately but it had been stolen by the time he got to his front door.

But he was grateful that his catalytic converter hadn't been stolen yet. His neighbor has his cat (a more popular car - a Prius) stolen three times before the neighbor just gave up and sold the car. The neighbor now uses taxis and public transit because owning a car was too hard given the constant crime.

"Then one day on the interstate
They suddenly lose control
They swerve to miss a baby duck
They're squashed beneath a produce truck
But they drove with pride...

And as the crowds drive past a little flat car
You know they saved a lot of gas

Today, the Midjourney user behind the images—Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins—alleged to Buzzfeed News that he was banned from Midjourney over the images. Buzzfeed also reported that Midjourney has banned the word “arrest” from being used in text prompts to generate images.||

382 The Chinese Communist Party reportedly pulled the low-budget British slasher horror film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey this week, just ahead of its debut, likely due to Chinese dissidents’ long-standing practice of using the cartoon bear to mock dictator Xi Jinping.

In the film, a serial killer dressed in a Winnie-the-Pooh mask, along with others in Pooh character masks, runs around bludgeoning people to death with sledgehammers and other implements. The film does not appear to contain any overt political messaging.

My take is pretty simple. The entire world, except for this narrow slice of time and space called the American Exception, is pretty damned commie. The only way large swaths of immigrants develop recognizably American values is when our own political culture is strong, and when we aggressively require assimilation of all foreigners.

There are a few outliers such as those consciously fleeing recent commie tyranny who "get it" on their own; but statistically they're not the majority. In my book whether foreigners can become Heritage Americans is mostly up to the natives.

453 Instead of just increasing the penalties for stealing a catalytic converter, Gavin Newsom restricted the sale and purchase of used catalytic converters.
---------
A couple years ago someone stole the catalytic converter from our Honda CRV (prime target) which was parked outside the Starbucks where our daughter was working her shift. That's how shockingly fast and easy it is. Takes less than a minute. I've seen videos of people stealing a converter in broad daylight from a parking lot.

Yes Newsom should increase (more precisely sign an increase) penalties for stealing catalytic converters. But some restrictions on selling them isn't a bad idea, it helps, although we can debate how much. In many states such restrictions are mostly about proper identification. So you can't walk in and sell *stolen* converters. But you can sell your old car.

What p*sses me off is the trouble and expense involved. Thieves get about $150-200 for something that cost us $500 to replace with insurance. Kick in the broken window fallacy and it's a net cost of about $2500-3000 for someone to make $150-200.

It costs less if someone simply robs us for $200.

What was happening is the cars were being stolen by car repair shops. Very cheap to fix a car when the parts are free. So, someone steals your cat converter. You take your car to the shop, and they steal someone else's cat converter to put on your car. And so on.

The person making money is the repair shop, not the criminal. In fact, the criminal likely works at the repair shop - how do you think they get so fast stealing the converters? he's taken off and put on hundreds. The $2,500 becomes just about pure profit.

This is, by the way, what the cops told me.
