11 Evening and morning to all! 'Tis chilly, the last gasp of what is laughingly called "winter" here, about 41 F. The roller coaster continues -- we'll get near 80 and humid by mid-week, then some rain, and drier (ha!) by Friday but no cooler.

24 Oh, that's right. First day of spring. We in cities are not connected to the seasons the way farmers are, so we continually get surprised when the official first day of a season arrives. It varies anywhere from the 20th to the 22nd of the given month. My mom's birthday was 9/22, and all her life, people -- including me -- were confused about her birthday because the first day of fall varied.

I didn't cement it into my head until I read Lord of the Rings. Bilbo and Frodo's birthdays were Sept. 22.

The main thing is that day and night are the same length today, and that -- if you're on the Tropic of Cancer -- the sun rises and sets directly in the east and west.

You're up early, boyo!

My contest entry is a story I completed a couple of years ago and was vetted by my writing group at the time. So it's pretty much set. I've having the 3 remaining members go over it once more before the deadline. One has seen it before. And one is a pro, a writer of published mysteries who is branching out into SF. He's a tough critiquer -- I hope he doesn't find anything howlingly bad that I can't fix.

He hasn't vetted anything of mine before, but he had some solid comments about another member's submission last week. He articulated some of the same misgivings I've had about the guy's work: that his stuff seems rather distant from the reader, and that he often lacks a viewpoint character and doesn't show us what the lead is thinking and feeling. Odd, for someone who is more a poet and literary guy than an adventure storyteller.

My industry (with held for security reasons) would never consider paying OT, that's why they'd use the four tens. They got the OT laws changed to reflect that. OT would only start after ten hour shift per day.

There are supposed to be people at every bank who understand and require management to “hedge” the risk associated with booking too much of any particular kind of exposure. Including long term fixed rate loans. Supposedly Credit Suisse has been willing to accept massive amounts of this offset risk. Much like AIG did in 2008. Problem is that they haven’t been very forthcoming about how much of this they took on and with whom. Big investors are very nervous about being caught in a potential bank run. So they start pulling deposits and other assets based on rumors.

78 Just finished watching a number of 77 Sunset Strip episodes this weekend. The show changed dramatically in its last year, going from a sprightly detective show with 3 major characters, some humor, and Hollywood glamour to film-noirish stuff with Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as a lone private eye in LA. There were some good mysteries in that last year, and overall the show was well done. But EZ's character, Stu Bailey, was simply not the same guy. He went from pipe smoking to cigarettes, from worldly-wise boss of his agency to a world-weary guy given to smart remarks and a yen for his reluctant blonde secretary. Bailey was painted earlier as a former OSS agent. Hard to believe he would be yearning after a cute blonde like a lovesick youth.

It's almost as if his producers had turned Napoleon Solo from globe-trotting Enforcement agent to a hard-drinking, down-at-heel private eye with shabby suits and savage memories.

I should try to watch some of those classic tv shows. I don't have cable or subscriptions so I'd have to see if OTA channels show them. Might give me some writing help and ideas.

We've been spoiled though, I don't think I can sit through commercials. I tried to watch Hell on Wheels on some Roku offered channel, but when I saw "1 of 7" pop up at a commercial break, I turned it off. Can't stand watching a five minute segment then have to watch ten minutes of commercials....

Wrapped up my all Scouting weekend. Friday evening through Saturday evening were given over to conducting skills' challenges for our annual skills competition. We have staged this event for twenty-two years running come hell or high water. I am the last person who was there at the start who still works at staging each new one and I have been present for all twenty-two of them. I am the ho to guy who knows how to arrange the chllenges while trying to slip in a new one every so often.

Sunday I accompanied our gSon on the hour long nature walk. Having completed this, gSon earned Tiger Cub rank. Mrs. Krebs and I have two charity related events arranged at which he will join us to complete his last belt loop for advancement.

87 The roughest job I ever worked was when we built the tall glass pylons at LAX that light up and change colors. It was 12 hrs a day mon-sat, 8 on sunday. Lasted 3 months. You only had time to work, eat and sleep. The money was great though. It was a prevailing wage job, the rate for us was $37/hr. I think half the crew bought new pick-ups cash money when it was over.

121 A chilling poll was released by 2021 College Free Speech Rankings after questioning a huge body of 37,000 students at 159 top-ranked U.S. colleges and universities. It found that sixty-six percent of college students think shouting down a speaker to stop them from speaking is a legitimate form of free speech. Another 23 percent believe violence can be used to cancel a speech. That is roughly one out of four supporting violence.

So in populations (civilizations) we tend to accept around 4% anti-socialist or sociopathic behavior within the community.

--

This has been common practice for decades. Make a claim, prosecute an (R), ruin him in the press and elections, then years later drop the case.

That's part of what this is (remember when they could've quietly arrested whatever Trump (R) it was but instead made sure they had press lined up waiting for him to perp walk a few years ago?), but the other part is tied to their failure to get people worked up enough over the banks to push in digital currency.

I don't know what else they plan or what they've got ready, but arresting Trump will be the modern version of them crashing the planes into the buildings in order to open the drawer to sign the already-written 300+ page PATRIOT Act into law a couple of days later.

141 The Full Original Copy of the Serenity Prayer
by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)
God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.

Bailey launched the investigation two weeks ago after a whistleblower who worked there as a case manager claimed the center was causing permanent harm to its patients. A sworn affidavit released Thursday identifies the whistleblower as Jamie Reed, who worked at the center from 2018 until November 2022.

150 It occurs to me that Trump, as is his wont, shot his mouth off about "being arrested." He drummed up several days of news and speculation about himself, which is fairly typical of the man. Trump also made some fairly aggressive statements about having his supporters protest his "arrest." Those haven't received much coverage, which I find odd, given how sensitive the media is about certain people protesting.
