Psyche is the Greek goddess of the soul and often represented with butterfly wings. Psyche was commonly referred to as such in Roman mythology as well, though direct translation is Anima. She was born a mortal woman, with beauty that rivaled Aphrodite. Psyche is known from the novel called The Golden Ass, written by the Roman philosopher and orator Apuleius in the 2nd century.

The Metamorphoses of Apuleius, which Augustine of Hippo referred to as The Golden Ass (Asinus aureus),[1] is the only ancient Roman novel in Latin to survive in its entirety.[2]
The protagonist of the novel is Lucius.[3] At the end of the novel, he is revealed to be from Madaurus,[4] the hometown of Apuleius himself. The plot revolves around the protagonist's curiosity (curiositas) and insatiable desire to see and practice magic. While trying to perform a spell to transform into a bird, he is accidentally transformed into an ass. This leads to a long journey, literal and metaphorical, filled with inset tales. He finally finds salvation through the intervention of the goddess Isis, whose cult he joins. Augustine is asshoe Posted by: rhennigantx at March 23, 2023 09:37 AM (BRHaw) 51

I was unfamiliar with the Greek legend of Psyche, so I read the wiki summary afteer seeing todays painting. She lived a sad and eventually tragic existence, essentially only because of her physical beauty. Yikes.
Todays painting shows her beauty but gives little hint of what is to come, other than Persephone's box in her hand. I assume this is because the details of her legend would have been very familiar to people 150 years ago, when Cabanel painted this, and that common knowledge is now not so common. The box is supposed to contain the beauty of Persephone, one of the impossible tasks she had to do for Aphrodite. It was a trick tho. It really holds death. Psyche wasn't supposed to open it but was curious and did anyway. It killed her but Eros asked for her salvation and took her to Olympus.

The words were scarcely out of her mouth when she opened the box. But inside there was no beauty-lotion or anything other than the sleep of Hades, a truly Stygian sleep. As soon as the lid was removed and it was laid bare, it attacked her and pervaded all her limbs in a thick cloud. It laid hold of her, so that she fell prostrate on the path where she had stood. She lay there motionless, no more animate than a corpse at rest.
-Apuleius, The Golden Ass So the box was to hold a beauty product but instead was put to sleep. It is kind of a Sleeping Beauty story. This is an enchanting (in the real meaning of the word) painting. Cabanel captures the feminine qualities so effectively with the delicate skin tones, her stance and expression, and her almost ethereal gown. The butterfly wings are especially well done, so much so they don't distract from the model but enhance the feeling she evokes. The darker background makes her figure stand out. But everything in the picture is alive and vibrant. The detail and color of the box plays well with the rest of the image.
An extraordinary image taken from mythology. Any viewer, knowing the basic story, would be moved by the painting. Posted by: JTB at March 23, 2023 09:47 AM (7EjX1) 92

Economic writer Charles Hugh Smith has repeatedly warned that the "crapification" of the U.S. economy is the natural result of a "neoliberal-hyper-financialization-hyper-globalization model," in which quasi-monopolist manufacturers mass-produce goods with the cheapest possible components, while customers with scant other buying options are forced to accept that few purchases will last.

Posted by: polynikes at March 23, 2023 10:05 AM (6pcCZ) ++++ Yup, very possibly. They were able to issue new bonds for about half the amount pretty quickly. If they didn't engage poor risk management, they might have survived it despite the gigantic pull-out that Thiel executed. Given their capital position and risk management, it might have failed anyway - albeit by a thousand cuts instead of a single killing blow. We are going to find out over the next 24 months which banks have decent risk management and portfolio allocations and those that don't. With rates climbing and no way to bring them down, those too dependent on fixed-rate securities that are now losing value run a strong risk of failure. I'll bet it's at least half of the banks out there. Far too many probably assumed that zero interest was a party without end. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 23, 2023 10:10 AM (t0OGg) 199

IIRC The other gods gave Aphrodite to Hephaestus because he was lame and ugly and they decided to cut him a break.
He probably could have taken Ares in a duel, with all the hammers and other tools at his disposal. Plus, Ares was kind of a wuss. Athena bested him in battle in the Iliad. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 23, 2023 10:02 AM (t0OGg) My last company, (a spinoff of Lucent that starts with a "A"), had the bulk of the FAX/modem chipset market, especially when it came to FAXs, with a small bit going to Conexant. They had cultivated a relationship with HP for chips for the multi-function printer/scanner/fax/etc machine. Posted by: SMOD at March 23, 2023 10:12 AM (RHGPo) ++++ Yup. This is how Hock Tan operates. He focuses all engineering and development work on the top X% of customers by revenue, delivers precisely what they want, and squeezes them hard on price. Customers that can't switch easily to another vendor end up getting rent extracted from them. It has worked well for Tan and for Broadcom (Avago took Broadcom's name when it bought BRCM, but it kept its own ticker symbol) and the revenue and capital position reflect that, but it wins *no* friends among your customers and makes your customers universally hate you. If you can keep delivering the goods, it can keep working for you but you get *zero* margin for error when your customers are always looking for any excuse to drop you if they're able to. You have to make damn sure that they can't. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 23, 2023 10:20 AM (t0OGg) 244

Given this highly charged political ecosystem, Bragg’s targeting — if not weaponizing — of Trump is likely to be perceived as hyper-partisan. Many Democrats will revel in it, while many hardcore Trump supporters will be reviled by it. GAO to Investigate Dubious FBI Surveillance Practice
The Government Accountability Office has informed Headline USA that it will soon begin reviewing the FBI’s use of “assessments”—a constitutionally dubious practice that allows the bureau to target groups and individuals without evidence of criminal wrongdoing. FBI assessments have come under recent scrutiny in relation to the DOJ’s targeting of parents who hotly protested COVID-19 restrictions and other issues at school board meetings. A report published Tuesday by the House Weaponization Subcommittee revealed that the FBI conducted at least 25 assessments of school board threats—only one of which resulted in a full investigation, and none of which resulted in federal prosecutions. The love story of Cupid and psyche is one of my fave greek myths! And definitely had to have inspired beauty and the beast. The play Metamorpisis depicts their story in a really great way, capturing the moment she dares to sneak into his room to see what sort of beast she has married, only to find him a beautiful man! And then wax from her candle lands on him and ruins it. I love that while there is suffering after that, but they do end up happily together. Not all Greek love stories are so lucky.

Given this highly charged political ecosystem, Bragg’s targeting — if not weaponizing — of Trump is likely to be perceived as hyper-partisan. Many Democrats will revel in it, while many hardcore Trump supporters will be reviled by it. If that turns out to be the case, there is a very real danger that the fallout of U.S. public support for Ukraine from GOP and conservative-leaning voters could harden, and possibly deteriorate significantly. Posted by: SMOD at March 23, 2023 10:21 AM (RHGPo) There is no significant support for Ukraine currently amongst GOP and conservative-leaning voters. And yet, the turtle has assured Ukraine that this does not matter. Posted by: The Central Scrutinizer at March 23, 2023 10:27 AM (KbCG3) 275

Would now be a bad time to talk a little Star Trek?
I'ma talk a little Star Trek. I'm back home and got the Star Trek V bluray. Honestly? It's a really stupid movie but it's a fun kind of stupid. It's not all that bad. The best part of the entire movie is when Sybock is forcing McCoy and Spock relive their past pain. But you also have nude, fan dancing Nichelle Nichols which is just...weird. And the car girl. And...honestly, there's a lot of stuff you have to wonder what they were smoking. It's just so bizarre. I understand Nicholas Meyer had a hand in writing the film. If that's true I think you can see the little touches he adds. Anyway, definitely the least of the OG cast films, but I've also seen much worse. Like Insurrection. I don't think targeting dumb people as pawns helps. All you do is elevate idiots into higher levels of power, and they just keep screwing everything up, making the powers' jobs harder.
But smart people wouldn't be willing pawns. Posted by: TheJamesMadison --------- Not if their job is chaos to bring down constitutional government. Democracies end in chaos when their infirmities overtake its benefits. So, the usual historical story is you get authoritarian government with popular consent at first--the only question is whether it is despotism or a new overt aristocratic oligarchic system. Tirien Steinbach, the diversity administrator at Stanford Law School who stoked a disruptive protest of Fifth Circuit appellate judge Kyle Duncan, is "currently on leave," according to a memo on the protest reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon. Jenny Martinez, the law school's dean, said in a Wednesday morning memo to all law students that administrators "should not insert themselves into debate with their own criticism of the speaker's views." At future talks, the role of administrators will be to "ensure that university rules on disruption of events will be followed," Martinez said.
There's a lot going on, but most of it will come to nothing. A GW law prof is talking about filing a complaint with the CA bar, which might affect the offender's ability to practice in CA, and Ted Cruz is making noises, although I'm not sure what he can do. https://tinyurl.com/mr4dstuc We all know that Steinbach will not be fired, but I'm sure the Stanford folks are telling her to cool it for awhile. In a speech Monday to the American Bankers Association, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen expanded the government’s guarantee of all deposits beyond just those of the recently failed Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank to now include the deposits of any financial institution facing the threat of a bank run. Such a promise will likely warrant an increase in the fees the FDIC charges member banks to fund the Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) that it uses to cover the deposits of failed banks.
“I think there’s going to be a lawsuit about this,” Carney asserted. “Because if you are a Texas bank that provides credit to oil [and gas companies] and you’re getting charged bigger fees now because they bailed out Silicon Valley Bank, you are going to sue the FDIC because you’re going to say, ‘Why am I paying for your big bailout?’” Posted by: SMOD at March 23, 2023 10:43 AM (RHGPo) 365

BREAKING: Apple plans to spend $1 billion a year to produce movies that will be released in theaters - Bloomberg Posted by: andycanuck (Vwz3I) at March 23, 2023 10:50 AM (Vwz3I) ======= They have movies from Ridley Scott and Martin Scorsese nearing completion. The idea that they were going to make back their money from those two (probably a solid half of the billion dollar investment) was always silly through streaming. Streaming giants were just another path towards becoming new movie studios. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, being witty and sophisticated with Ernst Lubitsch at March 23, 2023 10:52 AM (LvTSG) 414

Somehow my Greek Myth class skipped Psyche and Eros. I looked her up to figure out what the box in the painting was about.
"The future goddess Psyche’s last and most frightening challenge was to descend into the underworld, the kingdom of the dead. All to return with a box of sleeping potion/beauty cream from Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld. This required her to painfully ignore the pleas for help from all the unfortunate souls she encountered on her way. This task was her longest and hardest, but she succeeded. Psyche was so exhausted by the effort when she finally succeeded that she took some of the potions for herself. Finding Psyche in a deep sleep and deeply moved by her accomplishing these tasks all for the love of him, Eros rubbed the potion from her eyes and returned it to the box which he sent on to his mother." While many locals will vehemently disagree, I don't care where the crabs come from - as long as it's blue crab and prepared Maryland style. Many locals say they'll only consider crabs from the Chesapeake Bay. I say that's stupid. Blue crab from the Gulf is outstanding -- as long as it's cooked our way (steamed - NEVER boiled).
Yeah, a blue crab is a blue crab. Just Chesapeake Bay can only produce so much and it's less than the demand. But I'll fight you on the boiled thing. Yanks don't know how to boil seafood anyway, so you probably screw it up. Posted by: sniffybigtoe at March 23, 2023 10:55 AM (Y5qcH) 431
