Todays painting shows her beauty but gives little hint of what is to come, other than Persephone's box in her hand. I assume this is because the details of her legend would have been very familiar to people 150 years ago, when Cabanel painted this, and that common knowledge is now not so common.

Yup, very possibly. They were able to issue new bonds for about half the amount pretty quickly. If they didn't engage poor risk management, they might have survived it despite the gigantic pull-out that Thiel executed. Given their capital position and risk management, it might have failed anyway - albeit by a thousand cuts instead of a single killing blow.
We are going to find out over the next 24 months which banks have decent risk management and portfolio allocations and those that don't. With rates climbing and no way to bring them down, those too dependent on fixed-rate securities that are now losing value run a strong risk of failure. I'll bet it's at least half of the banks out there. Far too many probably assumed that zero interest was a party without end.

My last company, (a spinoff of Lucent that starts with a "A"), had the bulk of the FAX/modem chipset market, especially when it came to FAXs, with a small bit going to Conexant. They had cultivated a relationship with HP for chips for the multi-function printer/scanner/fax/etc machine. About 5 years ago, they were bought by Avago, and shortly after that HocTan the CEO told HP he wanted a 60% increase in prices. HP ran off to Conexant faster than a bunny.

I've seen a number of lefties argue that just because more fake votes were inserted into the stolen states then the nominal margin of victory for Biden/Abortion Mouse doesn't mean that those elections were in fact stolen because you can't prove those voters weren't for Republicans.
I suspect this is where the court will end up.

I’m being notified by passengers on a Southwest flight departing Las Vegas that the captain became incapacitated soon after takeoff this morning. Yup. This is how Hock Tan operates. He focuses all engineering and development work on the top X% of customers by revenue, delivers precisely what they want, and squeezes them hard on price. Customers that can't switch easily to another vendor end up getting rent extracted from them. It has worked well for Tan and for Broadcom (Avago took Broadcom's name when it bought BRCM, but it kept its own ticker symbol) and the revenue and capital position reflect that, but it wins *no* friends among your customers and makes your customers universally hate you. If you can keep delivering the goods, it can keep working for you but you get *zero* margin for error when your customers are always looking for any excuse to drop you if they're able to. You have to make damn sure that they can't.

I’m being notified by passengers on a Southwest flight departing Las Vegas that the captain became incapacitated soon after takeoff this morning. He was removed from the flight deck and replaced by a non Southwest pilot who was commuting on that flight. This is now the fifth pilot incapacitation that I’m aware of in the past two weeks. The Government Accountability Office has informed Headline USA that it will soon begin reviewing the FBI’s use of “assessments”—a constitutionally dubious practice that allows the bureau to target groups and individuals without evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
FBI assessments have come under recent scrutiny in relation to the DOJ’s targeting of parents who hotly protested COVID-19 restrictions and other issues at school board meetings. A report published Tuesday by the House Weaponization Subcommittee revealed that the FBI conducted at least 25 assessments of school board threats—only one of which resulted in a full investigation, and none of which resulted in federal prosecutions.

I'ma talk a little Star Trek.
I'm back home and got the Star Trek V bluray. Honestly? It's a really stupid movie but it's a fun kind of stupid. It's not all that bad. The best part of the entire movie is when Sybock is forcing McCoy and Spock relive their past pain. But you also have nude, fan dancing Nichelle Nichols which is just...weird.
And the car girl.
And...honestly, there's a lot of stuff you have to wonder what they were smoking. It's just so bizarre.
I understand Nicholas Meyer had a hand in writing the film. If that's true I think you can see the little touches he adds.
Anyway, definitely the least of the OG cast films, but I've also seen much worse. Like Insurrection.

Grand juries should literally be freed by having its own legal counsel instead of prosecutors serving dual roles. I also believe that only the judge should dismiss potential jurors for proven cause after voir dire questioning, instead of our current peremptory challenge system where lawyers try to manipulate the jury pool.

The flip side is also true. Appointing prosecutors works when you have a reasonably lawful government that will punish bad appointed officials by ejecting and replacing them, rather than encouraging those officials with permanent job security for their service to the state and party interests.
We no longer have that, so that's why the system wouldn't work well.

My youngest is 26 and just got her Master's at Carnegie-Mellon last year. My 3rd graduated from SLS about 5 years ago. I think I'm reasonably up on the zeitgeist. I just refuse to excuse it.

There is also stupendous lying by colleges and counselors. They flat-out lie about earnings potential (there is a lot of cherry-picking of high-dollar locales that are then applied generally) to make it look like you can afford that debt by working it off.
This is sometimes true, depending on degree program and costs, but it is often a flat-out lie.

In anime, there's always a subset of characters that are clearly the rednecks of Japanese culture. (Not yakuza or gangsters, but they dress down and have a weird rolling if the R's. It's a very distinctive accent in anime.) I assume these are based on Ainu?

Ask your children about their erstwhile fellow students and their sensitivities. Started in K12 and moved to college during the Obama years and now is in graduate programs. Learned helplessness and victimhood for student activists and it always has some measure of support by an administrator or some other staff member.
That is why reforming education is almost impossible now from inside the system--the 'customers' are so important that the mission is forgotten.
