Great: US Predator Reaper Drone Collides With Russian Fighter Jet, Forcing the US to Crash the Drone Into the Black Sea

So great, now we've actually got air assets engaging with each other.

zerohedge
@zerohedge

RUSSIA FIGHTER JET STRUCK PROPELLER OF U.S. MILITARY "REAPER" DRONE, FORCING U.S. TO BRING IT DOWN OVER BLACK SEA - U.S. MILITARY STATEMENT

EUCOM is shouting that it's Russia who is acting "reckless" and "incompetent" here.

And also, unbelievably: "envrionmentally unsound."

That'll learn 'em.

A Russian jet struck the propeller of a U.S. Reaper drone over the Black Sea, forcing U.S. forces to bring down the drone, the Pentagon said, one of the first direct military confrontations between the two nations' forces since the war in Ukraine began more than a year ago.

Before the collision, which occurred around 7 a.m. local time Tuesday, two Russian Su-27s "dumped fuel on and flew in front of the MQ-9 in a reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner," said the U.S. European Command in a statement. "This incident demonstrates a lack of competence in addition to being unsafe and unprofessional," said the EUCOM, which is responsible for U.S. military operations in the region.

Yeah, it's called a WAR, and you've brought the US into it. Did you not know what happens during a WAR WITH RUSSIA, Pentagon?

After the collision, the U.S. brought down its drone. The drone was conducting "routine operations" over international airspace in the Black Sea, EUCOM said.

"Routine" operations. Uh-huh.

National security spokesman John Kirby said he briefed the brain-damaged president, and then also shouted about how "unprofessional" and "unsafe" Russia is behaving in a WAR the US is fighting against it.

President Biden was briefed Tuesday morning on the incident, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters, also calling it "unprofessional" and "unsafe."

"It is not uncommon for there to be intercepts by Russian aircraft of U.S. aircraft over the Black Sea," Kirby said. "And there have been, even in just recent weeks, there have been other intercepts. But this one obviously is noteworthy because of how unsafe and unprofessional it was ... in causing the downing of one of our aircraft."

Aw shucks our Predator Reaper drone wasn't doin' nuffin', it was just hanging out on the stoop playing with marbles and doing routine operations, when all of a sudden for no reason these Russian Jet Bullies came out of nowhere and started makin' trouble for it.

It's good to keep a sense of humor as the brain-damaged fake president shuffles and stumbles the nation into World War Three.

Did they have to wake President Sleep-and-Shit up, btw?

On Monday's installment of Morning Joe, former White House Press Secretary-turned-pundit Jen Psaki was called upon to share her thoughts on Biden's speech about two bank failures that shook stocks on Wall Street and sent ripples through global markets.

But, instead of emphasizing the substance of Biden's remarks -- the president insisted Americans "should feel confident" after the biggest bank failures since 2008 -- Psaki decided to make her point about the timing of his remarks. That's where things went south.

"It's important to note, President Biden does nothing at 9:00 AM," Psaki emphasized -- apparently not realizing that such a quip wouldn't land the way she intended. "He is a night owl," Psaki continued, "so the fact that he is doing this at 9:00 AM anyway speaks to how vital the White House recognizes it is for him to have his voice out there conveying that to the American public."

Yeah, Biden's a "night owl." That's why he starts sundowning at the exact time the Red Lobster starts its Early Bird Dinner discounts.

Update: Why was the language in the statement so weak and soy?

Reuben Hick nails it:

But this one obviously is noteworthy because of how unsafe and unprofessional it was .

Still using trigger words to cater to the emotional-language smooth brains.

Dang, that is it exactly. This language is carefully selected to rile up its Safetyist Pink-Haired Nosering base, who might one day remember that they usually pose as being "anti-war." So they're using language to appease them, telling them Russia is behaving like a Young Americans for Freedom member on a college campus, and therefore should be eradicated from the face of the earth.

That is the whole point of accusing Russia -- Russia, for Heaven's sake, author of the Chernobyl disaster -- of acting in an "environmentally unsound" manner.

Even I'm up by 9am. (Most days!)

But President Sleep-and-Shit really likes to sleep in, huh?

Well they are, and I frankly don't get the impulse to constantly build Russia up as a victim. Russia isn't out friend, and irrespective of the Ukrainian situation they have pursued an aggressive strategy against the U.S. long before Ukraine, Russia was supporting our enemies on the Middle East who were killing U.S. service members. Your friends, neighbors and family. They have constantly gone after our aircraft, ships and drones in an aggressive, and yes, unprofessional manner. They have also used troops on the ground to help our enemies when there was contact. Apparently the Russian aircraft dumped fuel in front of the MQ-9 and tried to take it down several times with the last strike being contact with the propeller. I'm a little unclear how that makes us or EUCOM the aggressor, incompetent or wrong.

Kansas, for all that I'm thinking of living there, is odd. There are long stretches on I-70 between exits, and not every exit has a gas station right there. But then in 2016 Russia spent $150,000 on FaceBook ads to stir up political trouble which a failed alcoholic lesbian claimed was "stealing the election."

At that point, the left became the absolute most unhinged of Dr. Strangelove level Russia hawks, and began attacking anyone who didn't now want to start a nuclear exchange with Russia a "RUSSIAN AGENT."

Just forget about those previous 90 years, eh, comrade? Like when the Democrat party was made up of front groups directly funded by the KGB?

The government should temporarily insure every bank deposit in the country to shore up confidence in the U.S. financial system, a senior GOP lawmaker said Tuesday.

Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer of Missouri — a top member of the House Financial Services Committee and a former banker — said in an interview that such a move would help the smallest banks as they deal with the fallout of the collapse of regional lenders Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank.

Luetkemeyer is one of the first Republican lawmakers to call for a broad-based deposit guarantee as a remedy for the banking crisis, leaning into a Biden administration response that other GOP politicians have blasted as a bailout. Luetkemeyer is among the House Republicans supporting regulators’ recent actions to contain the banking meltdown, in line with House Financial Services Chair Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.).

It was a supply chain problem, not an ideological one.

The Slavic world is the origin point for a huge amount of the underage slave trade. Russia cracking down on it - and the "no more American gays adopting kids" was only one front in it - dealt a meaningful blow. So did Trump's anti-trafficking efforts.

I don't think they took out Trump *because* he went after their slave trade, but it was probably a factor in it.

327 I agree. Give Ukraine whatever they need to shove Putin's forces back to Russia. And that includes airplanes, even the older ones Poland has had ready to send to Ukraine for a year if they US would agree. Ukrainians already know how to fly those. Dragging this war out benefits no one.

So the people at DU honestly believe that Ukraine, with only materiel support, would be able to defeat Russia? No doubt they simultaneously believe that Russia is the greatest threat in the world AND that Russia would just sit there and let us supply Ukraine without poking back at the same time.

These people really are stupid.

Maybe. I actually think it was just an accident. Hillary needed something nefarious on Trump to offset her criminal email abuse. So the whole Russians are behind Trump thing was created out of thin air. The Russians being the enemy that defined being right-wing in this country for years. Even Romney thought so as recently as 2012. If Russians are behind Trump, then he would lose a lot of support in the Repub party. She was right, up to a point, a lot of the establishment R's bought the lies and still think Trump and Russia are aligned and that Russia is enemy #1. But the base and the Trump voting former Dems didn't care and were focussed on how to improve this country instead. Hillary and the left are now all in on Russia as enemy #1 and can't or won't back off on it.

- The minimum wage is a free lunch to low-skilled workers
- Racial discrimination is costless to the discriminator
- China is “beating” us at trade
- Profits are a wealth “transfer” from consumers to producers
- Prices are arbitrary and “set” by sellers
- Rent control expands housing availability for the poorest
- Trade or immigrants “steal” domestic jobs
- Women earn less than men for performing the same work
- Capitalism degrades the environment
- Material standards of living are falling in industrialized societies
- Monopolists can charge whatever they want
- Our economy is positively bristling with said monopolists
- Socialism generates higher living standards and more equitable economic outcomes than capitalism

416 NATO has been promising Russia pretty much since the founding of NATO not to move the alliance further eastward. Take a look at a map of the original NATO countries and then look at a map of NATO today.

It doesn't matter whether you think Putin is right or wrong what matters is what he thinks and he has been quite clear for over a decade that move to admit Georgia or Ukraine would result in war. When George Bush made overtures to bring Georgia into NATO Putin invaded Georgia. When the braindead muppet currently occupying the White House made the same overtures to Ukraine, a country we had already run a coup in and took down a pro-Russian government, Putin invaded.

This really shouldn't come as a surprise. Putin has red lines that he actually enforces.

I mean, if your argument is that it was okay for Russia to invade Ukraine because the US does it, I don't know who you are fighting with because there's not a damned person here who supported invading Syria.

The US doing bad stuff doesn't make Russia doing bad stuff okay.

In WW2 they would knock down V1 Missiles not by actually hitting their wing, but getting close enough that the turbulence caused by your wings lift, would affect the lift of the Missiles wing. Think NASCAR drafting... it affects the airflow of the rear car (if close enough)... if done to an wings? The one affected would lose lift due to less airflow.

No, Russia's invasion was made righteous by the fact that the government of Ukraine had been overthrown by the US deep state, and was arming up against them, so it was an act of pre-emptive self defense, like the second US invasion of Iraq. Also, they were bombing civilians due to ethnicity (and the fact that they weren't loyal to the illegitimate regime in Kiev), much like Saddam bombed the Kurds, before we intervened to put a stop to it.

Russia is as justified as the US has been in its military actions, and more so because this was their own people who happened to be just over the border and it is dishonest to pretend otherwise.

And even if it was some sort of genuine threat to Russia for NATO to move into Ukraine (which, from what I can tell, only Ukraine was claiming this, and NATO was saying "nah"), that doesn't make it okay to invade.

Posted by: Greg the Class Traitor at March 14, 2023 03:04 PM (bZ64u)

It's frustrating how many times this has to be rehashed, but once again, the Budapest Memorandum was a fig leaf of cover given to Ukraine to do what they were going to have to do anyway. Russia was not going to leave soviet nukes behind, they were going back to Russia no matter what.

It was so much of a fig leaf in fact, we held zero interest in ratifying it as an actual treaty and our official position has always been that it did not bind us in any manner whatsoever. Only Ukraine tried to claim otherwise.

I'd also argue that we have done far more damage to non-proliferation given our recent history of toppling non-nuclear powers while appeasing nuclear powers and nearly capable nations like Iran.

With what Putin considers the illegitimate government of Ukraine.

He's well aware of the 2014 coup that took down the duly elected pro-Russia Ukrainian government. He's also well aware of out attempts at color revolutions in other former Soviet bloc countries and he's said as much.

Didn't get a whole lot of attention but around the time of the Ukrainian invasion there was a "grass roots" uprising in Kazakstan. Putin helped put it down and declared he would not allow anymore color revolutions in his backyard. He used the term color revolutions.

Our foreign policy has been pretty much a bi-partisan disaster since WWII. Only Trump didn't play along and look what that got him.

But the real driver for Russia here is national security. Which the US has a role in by convincing them there were reasonable odds we were setting up to screw them over. So in practical terms this started from a diplomatic failure.

On the morning of March 14. over the waters of the Black Sea in the area of the Crimean peninsula, the airspace control of the Russian Aerospace Forces recorded the flight of an American MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle in the direction of the state border of the Russian Federation.

The flight of the unmanned aerial vehicle was carried out with transponders turned off in violation of the boundaries of the area of the temporary regime for the use of airspace, established for the purpose of conducting a special military operation, brought to all users of international airspace and published in accordance with international standards.

In order to identify the intruder, fighters from the air defense forces on duty were raised into the air. As a result of sharp maneuvering around 9.30 (Moscow time), the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and collided with the water surface.

Russian fighters did not use airborne weapons, did not come into contact with an unmanned aerial vehicle and returned safely to their base airfield.

The Monroe doctrine and our interventions in regards to Cuba, particularly the Cuban missile crisis, follow similar principles.

Russia's warnings were specific to Ukraine (and possibly Georgia). They're not happy with but not as threatened by some other states joining NATO.

They are ok with Ukraine joining the EU.

The drone envelope is maybe 300+ miles per hour. Its landing speed is 132. So it was probably going faster than 132 or 134. It was probably doing 150+ and if there was a head wind the mig could manage to be within 10 15 mph closing speed. Its doable. THe mig landing speed is 149. So it was probably doing 160 170. 612 The Soviet Union was EVIL. Their entire doctrine was specifically about spreading communism around the world as aggressively as possible through every means. The USSR =/= the USA, in any level or way, especially in the 1960s. For the love of God, stop trying this, everyone.

In what way is the DC deep state morally superior to the USSR? The Soviets merely wanted to dominate the world, DC does.

613 Mosquito this Mosquito that. The A-26 Invader far outlasted the Termite Buffet for time in service.

614 I think the WWIII hysteria is ridiculous.
Reminds me of the 80's when Reagan was president.
"Don't make the Russians angry".

Also, while I am not a fan of the insane amount of spending on Ukraine, to think if it was not spent there that the vast majority would be used for anything other than destroying America more quickly is mind blowing.

617 Christopher, you're never going to convince the people who want to play whatabout like they are a 1940s fellow traveler. Their mind is made up. Once you equate the USSR and the US you're no better than the 1960s radicals.

619 I'm a little unclear how that makes us or EUCOM the aggressor, incompetent or wrong.

Spying into Russian airspace during a military operation. And using the information to kill Russian servicemen.

These have already been done on multiple occasions, this time it was by drone.

you do realize that the Soviet Union no longer exists, right?

621 Personally want NATO to be disbanded and have been calling for that since the Soviet Union collapsed. Its a huge money sink designed to make European nations to continue their socialism without needing to pay for defense. Its a gigantic money transfer out of our pockets to Euro elites and the military-industrial complex.

Worse than all of that it is another pseudo nation like the EU, responsible even less to any populace yet it conducts foreign policy and foments conflict in the name of the member states. We have enough "deep states" in the actual sovereign nations without creating extra irresponsible ones.

622 Why did we run a coup in Ukraine because we didn't like the government? Why did we also try in Kazakstan?

It's actually possible to love this country and not love our leadership or agree with their foreign policy which has largely been idiotic for decades.

We forced a cease fire in 2014 when the Donbass states surrounded the Ukrainian army to avoid its surrender. We set up the Minsk Accords, which were to give self rule inside Ukraine, backed by a UN resolution and signed by France and Germany.

The accords were never enforced, and Ukraine built the fortifications Russia is grinding down now in lands that were by the accords demilitarized. French and German high officials have recently boasted that they *never* were living up to the treaty and used the time to rearm Ukraine *to fight Russia*.

Before the invasion, Russia tried to get countries like France and Germany to talk about enforcement of Minsk. These were torpedoed by US diplomatic pressure. Peace talks after the invasion started were stopped by US and UK diplomatic pressure.

623 If you want to check out a real spy drone, use FlightRadar24 to look for the Global Hawks that operate regularly over the Black Sea - search for FORTE.

This is a jet with about the wingspan of a 737, retracting gear and 24hr+ loiter time. Cruises up at 50Kft+. Not clear how it works with the Reaper, but since it cruises up with (and above) the big boys, it uses an ADS-B transponder and shows up clearly.

624 "Brimstone ATM's" - Why are we delivering ATM's to the Ukranian people by drone? Couldn't we ship them by truck from Poland? Are we sending them pre-loaded with hyrvnias or dollars?
