Surprise! For the First Time in 100 Years, American IQ Scores Are Dropping

"I can't believe it, Americans are smarter than ever!" said only the idiots and cretins, because they're too stupid to know any better.

A recent study suggests that, for the first time in nearly 100 years, Americans' average intelligence quotient (IQ) is declining.

The professors who authored the study theorize that the quality of education could play a role in reversing the IQ gains enjoyed by previous generations.

The study, published in a spring 2023 edition of Intelligence, measures IQ test results among 18- to 60-year-olds to examine the phenomenon first observed by philosopher James Flynn.

Professors from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and the University of Oregon in Eugene explain the Flynn effect: starting in 1932, average IQ scores increased roughly three to five points per decade. In other words, "younger generations are expected to have higher IQ scores than the previous cohort."

Data from the sample of U.S. adults, however, imply that there is a reverse Flynn effect. From 2006 to 2018, the age groups measured generally saw declines in the IQ test used by the study, the International Cognitive Ability Resource (ICAR).

Overall declines held true across age groups after controlling for educational attainment and gender, but the study shows that the loss in cognitive abilities is steeper for younger participants. "[T]he greatest differences in annual scores were observed for 18- to 22-year-olds," the authors write.

Exposure to education, including through obtaining a four-year degree, generally lessened the blow to IQ points. The study suggests, however, that this is less so for younger participants.

In other words, education failed to blunt the fall in IQ among the youngest. Because, of course, they are getting the full "benefits" of CRT participation-trophy Only Your Feelings Are Really Math education.

Very much related: Via Twitchy -- AP declares that it's a "crisis" that young people are deciding to skip out on the Woke Ignorance Factories that are called "institutions of higher learning" only for legacy reasons.

@AP

What first looked like a pandemic blip has turned into a crisis as hundreds of thousands of young people opt to forgo college.

In dozens of interviews with @AP, educators, researchers and students described a generation jaded by education institutions

As more students opt-out of the massive expense to pay for nothing but a piece of paper inscribed with a credential of rapidly-declining value, and as colleges begin losing money and face the horrors of having to trim staff, you know what the next step will be, right?

Certainly not that colleges reform to bring actual value to students. Certainly not that they reduce their prices. Certainly not reducing their payrolls by shedding the huge number of worthless paper-shuffling administrators -- administrators now outnumber actual teachers on almost all college staffs -- especially their value-destroying DEI staffs?

No, good heavens, none of that! How dare I even suggest it!

No, it will be demanded that the US taxpayers give colleges even more money to make up for their shortfall, and pay for almost all of the extraordinarily high tuition they charge, to make wasting time and getting laid in five or six years of "college" so cheap that only the truly disciplined would skip out on it.

Education is a train wreck. Not only are kids not taught how to think (that has been true for some time now), now they aren't even being taught facts. A kid going through public school with no help from him parents at home isn't even going to learn how to read or add. So yeah, not surprising.

I do wonder what the effects of the big 'ole confounding variable that is the smartphone/social media complex are, though. Education is a disaster and it's a huge part of it, but I strongly suspect it is not the *only* part of it.

They'll try, yeah. It will probably even happen. It won't work.

Even if we can pay for such a scheme (we can't, but set that aside - fiscal reality will occur all at once, right at the end), it won't have the desired effect. Conservatively, America's colleges and universities are openly hostile to *half* the population. Don't be a man and don't be white. Especially don't be a white man. If you are those things and you go to college, you'll be denigrated and abused for years on end to get that increasingly-worthless sheepskin.

Make it "free" to go to college. Hell, subsidize students directly to some modest degree. Do all of that and watch enrollments fall anyway, at least at traditional schools. Trade schools might do well under such a scheme, though.

Was it given under the same methodology and with the same test? Or has the test changed to fit a different vocabulary and syntax of current language.

There's probably dozens of variables that would have to be controlled for. And the big question; what did the researchers desire to see in the results? Would they or their funders want to see 'IQ's reporter higher ? Or is there more money in doom-pilling?

Way back in the stone age times, one of the math teachers in HS noticed that a few kids just weren't getting it. He changed his lesson plans to teach using examples surrounding betting on the ponies or sports teams and the like. Some of the kids that appeared as dumb as rocks suddenly grasped the lessons and discovered how this math stuff could fit into life. Instructors have a hell of a time doing something similar today.

That last part is huge...I'd expect this is entirely for "the grift" - with the schools still in a 20th century and increasingly too expensive paradigm of education delivery, they don't want to be updated/streamlined/replaced...they want to prove the replacements make people dumber, so they can keep the old school grift going...

97 I spoke to a girl the other day who was stuck in a dead end job for a construction company directing traffic around road work. That's all she was eligible for after getting shafted in the public school process and believing the lie that she could make a living being a social media star. She was also overweight due to her buying into all of the lies that was a "healthy" lifestyle. She was severely disillusioned and depressed, and asked me for advice. The first thing I told her was to find God, and his son, and put her trust in them. The next thing I told her was to have a plan for her life, dedicate herself to it, and never quit. I doubt she's the only person who bought into the lies and ended up in a bad place.

When I was in the fifth grade (I think, though it might have been fourth), we were doing rudimentary decimals. Easy stuff. A few students were *not* getting it and the teacher (such as he was, which wasn't much) was not getting through to them. I raised my hand and said, "Do it as money. Everyone knows what a buck fifty is, and 1.5 is the same as $1.50, which is a buck and a half."

IQ is being taught to think. In my daughters high school, where she is a junior, she may have read a little more than half a dozen books so far. There is no more creative writing. All writing must be formulaic so that children are pressed into office drones and not independent creative thinkers.

Math has been under attack for over a decade with common core, where they confuse the shit out of kids by making them multiple ways of doing math. I tell my kids do it my way and ignore their bullshit, even when the teachers complain to me that I’m not preparing them. I tell them - they are prepared. Just not the way you want.

It is no surprise that iq has dropped. I’ve been saying that now just by observations of how bad the teaching is.

Different people learn differently. I've very, very auditory. I can listen to a lecture without visual aids and do fine (or read it in a book or whatever), but some people really need those visual aids to grok it. Some people dig the abstract, others need real-world examples to ground it.

A good teacher does all of it to the best of his ability. Provide the abstract *and* the grounded, preferably in the same lesson. Use the visual aids and the people who don't care about them will just tune them out.

179 The disastrous problems with "education" are manifest and obvious, but I do wonder about the objective significance of this IQ score thing.

As others have noted, measurement issues and correction for various factors likely muddle up everything to where there can be no strong inferences drawn.

One obvious factor however does lend itself to (yeah, of course) dark observations. Mass immigration is something the US has experienced before (in fact, in modern history, and as a deliberate policy, the US is nearly unique in this). It has always come with problems, unsurprisingly.

But the largest/most famous period of (legal, intentional) mass immigration, late 19th and early 20th centuries, was accompanied by *assimilation* to an amazing degree. It was an ethic, a value, as much as a policy. The Ukrainian- or Yiddish- or Polish-speaking father in the NYC tenements telling his son he'd whup him if heard him speak Ukrainian outside the home was a real thing. Ditto the Vietnamese immigrant parents who spoke little English and whose kids dominate(d) the academic heights (in *public* schools) in SoCal since the 80s.

Take Weasel's firearms course, for instance (and I have at the TXMOME). 196 Federal Student Loan Program is 100% the problem.

It creates an artificial demand, so colleges naturally raised prices. As more and more mouthbreathers took free money to get in, more colleges were enticed to take that money, which required them to lower standards. Mouthbreathers aren't discerning when they spend money that isn't theirs, and so the Woke death spiral began, as dunces who couldn't have gained entrance prior to lowered standards also didn't like taking hard courses.

Enter Gender Studies as the modern Basket Weaving 101. That shit was self-limiting before, because only the asshole children of wealthy assholes could afford to waste money on those courses, but now the asshole children of a wealthy asshole government have carte blanche to fuck up our whole society.

Actually the test used by the military is the ASVAB...Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (if I remember correctly). No. There's one character introduced from the previous seasons in this. There's also a professional relationship between Picard and 7 of 9 that was developed in the first two seasons that gets played on. That's it.

This isn't quite as foolproof as it sounds. I work with a lot of instructors who are subject matter experts in many different areas. However, they are often pretty poor teachers. ||Historian Paul A. Lombardo argued in 1985 that Buck was not "feeble-minded" at all, but that she had been put away to hide her rape, perpetrated by the nephew of her adoptive mother.[15] He also asserted that Buck's lawyer, Irving Whitehead, poorly argued her case, failed to call important witnesses, and was remarked by commentators to often not know what side he was on. It is now thought that this was not because of incompetence, but deliberate.[22] Whitehead had close connections to the counsel for the institution and to Priddy. Whitehead was a member of the governing board of the state institution in which Buck resided, had personally authorized Priddy's sterilization requests, and was a strong supporter of eugenic sterilization.[15]||

Genuinely good. The new showrunner appears to be an actual fan of Star Trek. It's not just the callbacks (the heavy use of Horner's themes are very welcome), it's that it's using the characters in a new setting and time intelligently.

It also doesn't feel like a show desperately looking around for narrative momentum and excuses to fill 10 hours. At least through the first 3, the story is shockingly tight.

I unsubed from Dave Cullen last night over this. Even from his positive reviews, I can see that it's less really good than it is "not a double middle finger in your face" each episode.

And to be honest, I don't care at this point. They could crank ot 60 seasons of masterful storytelling in a row, and I wouldn't watch it. Same goes for most TV and movies. Hell, I have a hard time watching older stuff, because I can see the subtle beginnings of Wokism in so much.

More than that, you can see how the '80s and '90s programmed 2 generations of action fans to assume the cop, CIA/FBI Agent, or military are the good guys. Those dudes with a gun can do no wrong. Funny how they all work for the State.

They "tweak" it all the time. It has been years since I've had to deal with the test directly, but I've not heard of any major changes made since, I think, the '90's. What the Services will do is adjust their acceptance scores for a particular MOS.
Interestingly, an Infantry soldier (as of two years ago) has to have a score of 110 (100 is the mean). This is in part due to the complexity of the equipment infantrymen have to deal with...namely on-board computers and aiming systems for the vehicles.

All sorts of elaborate and correct arguments about feasibility and cost and etc merely "give room to destroy" (to borrow a modern notorious phrase).

Mocking the ignorance and cult behavior accomplishes nothing. Wielding the ultimate limp broken wiffle-ball bat of "hypocrisy!" accomplishes less than nothing. Now, they're real fancy down in town and you'll have to sign a guest book. I know you can't read or write, but that's okay. You just sign with an 'X' and they'll let you stay there."

The boy did it and sure enough, he was asked to sign the guest book. He drew an 'X,' but then thought better of it and drew a second 'X' next to it. The clerk said, "I've seen some of you illiterate hillbillies sign with an 'X' before, but why do you use two?" The boy replied, "Well sir, I don't know you and this is a strange town full of strangers. I thought I oughtn't use my right name."

Not really. This is an expected result according to the guy who first designed IQ tests.

Tests can only measure outputs. A child raised feral won't compare to a child with civilized rearing. When first conceived of, there was a variety of confounding factors listed compared to a measure of "raw intelligence", such as how urbanized a region was.

IQ rising a few points every decade also makes no sense if it were purely a measure of innate characteristics.

I have done all that you have listed and then some including being spat at and threatened by leftists at protests. Hope? More like peddling false hope. Elections were stolen. Did you actually catch that or did you miss it? GOTV ain’t gonna do a fucking thing. It’s who counts the votes. The left has proven that more than once now. As I said, REALITY. Let’s operate on that no matter how much pointing it out sounds like whining or boo-hoo depressing people. Why don’t you explain how the Republican nominee whomever it might be is going to win in 24? I’m not the only one here that believes it’s a false prize. Maybe you can enlighten us.

397 Read The Bell Curve. Almost all the gain in the first half of 20th century was as a result of improvement at the extreme low end. The future is screwed because intelligence is highly hereditary, and our dumbest women have more children than our smartest women. Education cannot make up for bad genes.
