G'Day everyone
Hi Pixy and Wolfus Posted by: Skip at March 02, 2023 04:01 AM (xhxe8) 3
Well, whaddaya know, made it! Evening and morning to all! 'Tis Thursday (right?), and we slog on toward the weekend. I have to yell for help via Zoom to the budget office this morning, as i have no idea about some things in this budgeting software platform they use now. (Anaplan. I am going to call it Anal-Plan.)
Writing group tonight; possibly cooler weather tomorrow; another meeting or demo with the budget people; and then The Weekend. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 02, 2023 04:02 AM (omVj0) 4

I had a double battle with the close-by location of my grocery chain yesterday. First they tried to charge me $5.99 for something I knew damn well was $3.49. Girl has to go check, then come back and take it off, and then get her supervisor to confirm it. Then, as I was leaving, I added up my charges, and they came to a good $10 less than I'd paid. So, back to customer service. Turned out their bottle of Vitamin D was 50% off -- but they put it in the wrong place. I thought it had been $8, thus $4; they said it was $20, thus $10. "Take it off," says I. A 15-minute expedition turned into 40.
I knew there wasn't a reason I hadn't been back to that store in a couple of years. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 02, 2023 04:11 AM (omVj0) 7

"Resonance Theory of Consciousness". To paraphrase Pauli, that's not even dumb. I started to read that paper. It's nothing but Kamala grade word salad. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at March 02, 2023 04:13 AM (Mzdiz) 9
Pixy, I appreciate your analogy summarizing the paper:
"Cars make noise when they move, therefore it's the noise that makes them move." But I think the authors are more specifically drawing on the Beach Boys, not the Cars, because of their focus on "The notion of resonance (also known as synchrony, coherence, or shared vibrations)." Posted by: m at March 02, 2023 04:33 AM (mn2bz) 10
I was a little startled by the URL for the paper, thinking it promised some really wild wild-west stories:

I try to avoid crowds as much as I can because I increasingly dislike the human race. Yesterday, however, went to Houston's big rodeo shindig. The evening is a simple one, a modified rodeo program that lasts about two hours followed by a concert that lasts about 75 minutes. In our row there was a party of 8 next to us (I sit on the aisle) and over the course of the two and a half hours I could manage, between them they got up a counted 29 times. Nachos, beer, bathroom, more nachos , more beer, etc. It was the same at the last ball game I went to there. People don't care about the event or others. First world problem but reinforcing of my attitude to the species.

A group of bipartisan senators is quietly meeting to retool Social Security before funds run out in 2032. On the table, according to Semafor, is gradually raising the retirement age to 70 and creating a $1.5 trillion sovereign wealth fund, which would invest in stocks. That fund would be separate from the already existing Social Security Trust Fund.

Last night at sundown was a spectacular conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. I've been reading some arguments that the Star of Bethlehem was actually such as very close conjunction of Venus and Jupiter than occured in 3 - 2 BC. That was about the closest they've been since, they would've appeared as one star. Timeline is interesting. That conjunction would've appeared first at dawn around August, 3 BC in the east. Then around June of 2 BC, the very close near merger would've occured at dusk. There's a good argument that was the Star of Bethlehem that brought the "3 wise men". There was also a triple conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn a few years earlier that is also a candidate. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at March 02, 2023 06:38 AM (Mzdiz) 113

Damned Julius Caesar. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at March 02, 2023 06:58 AM (Mzdiz) Indeed. Although back in the day, they did not use a numbering system for the year. Each year was named for the two elected Consuls of that year. So officially, Caesar's first year as Consul was the year of Caesar and Bibilus(sp?) The reforms Caesar put in place I think originally had a leap day every three years instead of four. Then Augustus changed it to every four years, like 30 years later. >> The reforms Caesar put in place I think originally had a leap day every three years instead of four. Then Augustus changed it to every four years, like 30 years later.
I remember reading about that recently, in my astronomical time obsession of late. The leap year every 3 years was *an error* made by the Roman priests. It was a common "off by one" error of sorts. This error was realized during Augustus time, and he decreed there would be 12 years without leap years to make up for the 3 erroneous days that had been added. Only problem, the exact dates of this are lost to history, and thus there is uncertainty about dates around this period, which are are somewhere around 1 AD.
