No, George Soros Didn't "Endorse" Ron DeSantis

In case you saw this going around, no, George Soros did not endorse Ron DeSantis for the Republican nomination -- at least, not in the way the Fake News clip that some dishonest Trump supporters intended people to think he did. Soros said he hoped Ron DeSantis won the nomination so that Trump would run as a third party candidate, and then the Democrat candidate would score a "landslide" victory over the both of them.

That's a lot different than the edited clip, which just shows Soros saying he hopes DeSantis wins the nomination, wants you to think he's saying.

I really do not like this level of low dishonesty. Superficially the lie works -- you watch the video, you see Soros say the words.

But then two days later you see the full clip and you see you've been duped. Now you know the guy who put the video together is a liar, and you have a bad taste in your mouth about the candidate he's supporting.

It's just so stupid and it winds up boomeranging back against the candidate it's supposed to be helping. People remember when other people try to trick them, and when other people act as if they're fools.

Treating people as if they're fools to be duped is treating them with disrespect.

And no, that doesn't mean Trump is treating people with disrespect. He didn't create this meme. (I assume.) He has nothing to do with it... unless he retweets it.

I hope he doesn't retweet it.

I've seen this over and over again in politics. There are some people who think they are smarter than everyone, and think therefore they can fool most people.

But these people inevitably turn out to be among the very stupidest people in politics. They always think they're tricking people, and if you point out that most people see through their tricks, and that their tricks then backfire, they will say: "Our deceptions work on people whore dumber than us."

And I always try to tell them: But there are barely any people who are dumber than you. When you talk about tricking the Stupid Voters -- you are the Stupid Voters, idiots. You are the people you're trying to fool.

This is Dunning-Kruger Politics. Dunning-Kruger Syndrome describes the situation where smart people tend to imagine that their competitors and colleagues are as competent as they are, or even more competent, so they tend to evaluate themselves lower than their actual level of ability.

But incompetent people are incompetent enough at their jobs that they don't even know what competency looks like, so when asked to evaluate themselves, they think they're very competent -- and don't think that their more competent colleagues are competent. So they rate themselves higher than their actual ability.

These obvious lies don't work. They may work one day, but in the next several days when someone sees they've been lied to, they hold it against the person who lied to them.

But they don't understand that lies have consequences.

Because they're stupid.

And they will just keep putting out these stupid, cheap deceptions, and keep thinking they're Super-Crafty for doing so.

And they'll just keep thinking they're #Winning.

I don't want anyone to feel implicated by this, if you didn't know or if you believed it. Hey, stuff gets passed around on the internet. We can't all do fact-checks. When I first heard of this -- I heard of it, I didn't see it -- I didn't know if it was true or not.

I personally assume that a lot of leftwingers or Bill Kristol types will actually endorse Ron DeSantis, precisely to screw him over.

So it seemed to me perfectly believable that Soros had, in fact, "endorsed" DeSantis. One of these days, these guys will get crafty and start doing just that.

By the way, I certainly don't want to suggest that this lie is about Trump, just because it was offered on Trump's behalf.

Because this crap has obviously been around long before Trump.

Stupid, easily-disproven lies are always part of politics.

One thing I've noticed, though, is that there is a contingent of people online whose interest in politics is almost incidental to their actual primary passion, which is shitposting. And among those shitposters will be general contrarians, actually, kind of antisocial discordians.

Some of these guys really like lying and tricking people; it's part of their psychological make-up. They like opposing "the system" and lying feels like a satisfying transgression to them.

You know what I mean? Like, the shame is part of the kink. Lying isn't a cost of playing the game; lying is the game.

A lot of these guys work for the Establishment. They love, love, love Conning the Rubes.

I've sometimes talked with people who consider themselves real "Political Gamemasters" and their eyes really light up at the deception/"spymaster" aspects of politics. I've had people "leak" me polls that turned out to be fake. I don't mean a poll that was cherry picked from a series of polls that showed different results; I mean a poll that was simply made-up out of whole cloth, completely fictitious, just totally made up of imagination and lies. When I confronted this person, he wasn't even apologetic about it -- they acted like we were all in this Great Game together, weren't we? Shouldn't I be happy that I'd been used as a pawn in his maneuvering to get people to pay more attention to a race in this state?

A lot of the most passionate online supporters are attracted to whoever appears to be the most oppositional candidate in the race, whoever that is.

Rand Paul, for example. Now Trump. That doesn't actually reflect on the men they support -- as Rand Paul said of his more repellent supporters, "They endorsed me, I didn't endorse them" -- unless Trump retweets them or supports them or something.

Anyway, that's obviously not the average Trump supporter. I'm just saying, Memelords and Sh!tposters do particularly like Trump. People who are fed up with the system. Like most of you, like me.

(I'm not always attracted to the most oppositional candidate, I'm 20% cvck, so I usually pick a candidate who is the second-most oppositional. That's why I preferred Cruz. But when Trump won, I backed him, wholeheartedly, and liked him more and more as the weeks passed.)

And whatever group has the most passion, will attract a lot of amateurs interested in cheap and dirty aspects of the game, of course.

The pros will work for the big money the Establishment offers, but the amateurs will work for candidates they feel passion about. The guys who fancy themselves to be Political George Smileys, moving the 4-D political chesspieces around the internet game-board, one lie at at time, hoping to one day bring the whole rotten system down and, of course, emerge as the conquering Hero of Deliverance.

They just really like lying. Telling them that lying is counterproductive won't dissuade them, because producing a positive political result isn't the point of the lie -- they're lying for the thrill of imagining the power they have over the Rubes' minds when they get to "program" their inferior brains with the message they've concocted. They're mostly in the game of politics for the game, not for the politics.

The Democrats do this all the time, too, often with poor results. In CO, they gave assistance to the Libertarian Party candidate in 2016 to make sure the state didn't vote for Trump (as if that was possible).

They had to cut off that support when they found that most of the people considering the L party were their own voters.

Butter, cream (or milk,) salt & pepper. Mash a bit first, then add butter. Mash a little more then add cream, S&P.

If you like lumps, use a hand potato masher, otherwise use an electric hand mixer.

Same but also add a splash of milk and sour cream. Bacon bits are a must. Hell, plop that cheese right in there as well. Dash of onion powder and a little smoked paprika. Take a bite and then try like hell to convince your family that you screwed them up and will suffer through eating all of them yourself as penance.

Wash the cut-up cubes, let them drain, boil 'em until just soft. Strain the water and immediately put the taters back into the hot pan, let it steam off while you heat up the butter and milk/cream, chop them chives/parsley/etc.

If you have a ricer, rice the taters into the pan over low/med heat, then pour the milk & butter into the pan and mix. If no ricer, mash the taters gently until combined. S & P while mixing. Don't over mix, it'll turn into glue.

The one point where I think Trump might have a possible in is if Trump goes full isolationist and basically runs a truly isolationist foreign policy campaign, and dares DeSantis to match him.

But that's dangerous for Trump because I don't think the GOP is ready to sign up for Peace at Any Cost isolationism just yet. Trump supporters all cheered when he took out the Suleimani, for example -- they can't claim they're *completely* against foreign interventions. Or at least if they are, it's a new principle, not an existing one.

Ted Cruz got five active endorsements during the primaries (including Mike Pence, apparently). Rubio got Haslam, Haley, Brownback, Hutchinson, and Martinez.

The point isn't necessarily that a particular sellout is definitive or not, it's that "above the fray" fundraisers are no more prepared to win the nomination than "unprepared" plebs.

Unfortunately, right now his script is mostly what GOP consultants think a "war against woke" looks like. Trump did a few of those. It is absolutely intervention. It is not wide-scale war. Trump ordered a number of surgical strikes on specific enemies and bases, of limited scope. Those particular interventions were probably the right move, but I may well have a different opinion on them now if they hadn't worked.

But the interventions before and since have been very different. They have been major war actions, sometimes - like in the case of Libya and Ukraine - utterly without even a vague connection to American security.

If the choice is to have no nuance whatsoever - that is, if the choice is between "war at any scale at any time for any reason or no reason at all" or "total isolationism" - then I'd vote for isolationism, even though interventions can be sensible.

Oh I know Trump's not as conservative as I want, but the stuff he is conservative on is the stuff I care most about. And he's done more than any recent politician on those things (immigration, oil, and trade). And I'll gladly take a guy giving me 100% of 70% over 10% of 95%.

I'm not blaming anyone on anything Chyna Virus related when it comes to the two, that was such an eye opening moment of insincerity I didn't think the Swamp had it in them. And seeing how they used it to steal an election, something you should NEVER let go, only reinforces me to go Trump '24.

You're not lying at all. I would have much preferred if Trump had just fired Fauci and the entirety of the bureaucracy when they turned on him (well, they'd been against him from the beginning) in what turned out to be an entirely manufactured but potent political situation. I'm not sure if there's a politician on the planet who would have done that, though.

That's still not shutting anything down. There were states and localities that never shut down. No one had to. Remember when we were all in love with Kristi Noem because SD never shut down?

I'm not a Trump apologist, but he didn't shut anything down. He was trying to thread a needle with an out of control bureaucracy, and he didn't do it well. I'd say he failed at threading that needle. I'm not convinced that there's any Republican out there who could have pulled it off, though with the realities as they were.

you're saying that DeSantis has to choose different positions? Why? I wouldn't.

DeSantis was already a based Republican who was sort of Trump-like. Trump has shown that MAGA politics is vital and winning formula. I would copy his homework and just present myself as a more attractive and effective administrator for the winning formula.

Let's fix that quickly. The real President, Donald J. Trump, improved his vote total in Florida alone from 4.6 to 5.7 million. DeSantis went from 4.1 to 4.6. Different strokes, but no one's credibly claimed that any plausible Republican can expand aggressively on the 76 million plus Trump votes.

As governor he has successfully taken stock of what the governmental powers are and how they can be used to his advantage. Trump never did any of that and lacked the political will to take action, even when it would have been the bold, right thing to do.

For Pete's sake, he just endorsed Rona McDaniel, the big donor jackass who is responsible partially for him losing. She put in place the strategy that ended up in a disaster for our country- and recently backed her again.

It's things like that which give me zero confidence Trump has learned anything. Nor will he hit the ground running if elected.

Nah, Desantis's appeal isn't really about policy differences. His proponents think that in him they've got a guy who is as at least as conservative as Trump on net who will be more electable and more effective because he lacks Trump's grating NY personality and management problems and can actually talk policy as opposed to overarching themes. Right or wrong, that's essentially the case for Desantis, rather than huge policy differences, at least so far.

Meh. The primary at this point is the easy thing for us to win. The early votes are in states that are largely free of major voting issues, and the Republican Party has woken up to the realities of the GOPe's games. It also helps that there's only a couple of major rockstar conservative voices with a serious chance, helping to eliminate the splitter issue, which now transfers to the GOPe, Trump/DeSantis killer candidates like Nikki Haley.

It's the fact that nothing has been done to fix voting in Philly, Maricopa, Detroit, and Fulton County, among others. They'll fortify the general again, and a half-dead Biden will coast to victory.

The range of views in a GOP primary isn't that wide. and the winner is going to get a platform that is arrived at by committee intent on unifying the party behind the candidate. Yes Trump broke that model a bit. But the candidate needs to do more than just have the right set of policy choices. There's some mechanics and organization and fundraising and getting people to like you, too

He had to know we were stuck, so many people were stuck. wtf were we supposed to do?!?! we DID pass that amendment but our legislative schedule made that take months and months. anyway. I won't ever forget.

The federal government isn't there all the time, and it doesn't really feel like a major concern. Sure, it has knock on effects on things like the economy, but connecting that to actual politics when they don't concentrate on politics is something of a leap.

If you're an apolitical tradesman who lives in a rural area of Ohio, is your life so bad right now that you're suddenly chomping at the bit to fight Democrats specifically? I don't know about that.

Their control over the primary process over the decades has been through the ability to consolidate quickly around a singular Establishment candidate while letting the more conservative candidates fight amongst themselves, splintering the vote early, and letting the establishment candidate become "inevitable".

That reverse in 2016 when Trump essentially become the only conservative candidate (Cruz was a solid second, but that was it) while everyone else made it obvious they were establishment through and through (even Scott Walker...le sigh...).

The primary calendar first goes through a bunch of states with relatively secure voting processes, allowing the people's voice to be heard pretty clearly in the primary vote. That changes in the all at once federal general election where momentum no longer matters and PA can just swing everything at once.

No, I don't think the GOPe can stack the 2024 GOP primary. It's Trump's to win. If DeSantis enters, I think Trump still wins, but DeSantis will be announcing, at the earliest, in June, when Trump will have been winning poll after poll by 30-50 points. He'll be seen as super strong, and that's a weird place to try and enter the race.

It's also an issue on the Democrat side. Elections in SC are pretty clean for both GOP and Democrats. That means that the DNC can't just choose who wins the third primary, and the first that's actually seen as important anymore. It's why they couldn't brute force Kamala, Buttigieg (who won Iowa!), Beto, or Warren. They had to settle with Old Uncle Joe, beneficiary of years of gentle handling from the press.

Yes, and thus DeSantis b/c the states where those voters stay home are states we either can't win or win in a landslide.

In the next election, only probably 10 states "matter" - and of those, each side needs to find their path. GOP needs the "likely vote fraud" MI/WI/PA combo (2 of 3) or they need both VA/GA (no vote fraud, at least not against Rs). In the next election, only probably 10 states "matter" - and of those, each side needs to find their path. GOP needs the "likely vote fraud" MI/WI/PA combo (2 of 3) or they need both VA/GA (no vote fraud, at least not against Rs). If you don't think Trump can beat the midwest fraud, you have to "vote for the other guy" b/c Trump can't win either of VA/GA...and Repubs need both...

I would imagine being in Congress - with all its seniority, etc. rule - would be extremely frustrating for someone who wants to get things done. At the risk of provoking a firestorm, I suspect that that frustration is why Trey Gowdy dropped back into punt formation. Being in Congress would drive ME nuts; I've been in a department that operated like that, and it did injury to my soul.

There has to be a review process, to make sure that what is shown on TV reflects the truth and also protects Capitol security, otherwise the Democrats will have a field day roasting Republicans as reckless. Also, of course there has to be rules that footage cannot leave the Capitol, otherwise it could disappear..... it doesn't belong to Tucker, it belongs to the House of Representatives. I think a procedure to request copies of footage that is then vetted makes alot of sense. Sure, it means it will take time. But alot of other news teams will eventually get access as well, and setting up a process now makes sense.
