Who's afraid of the conservative activist?

⚔️

I've been watching Christopher Rufo since he came into the news by publicizing diversity training in government organizations (mostly), and I've noticed some things:

1. He is very open about being an activist, though he doesn't shout much.

2. He is self-promoting. He draws a lot of fire toward himself.

3. His opposition is often powerful and established, but nonplussed.

I think that some of these observations may be explained by the fact that he was once a leftist activist. He doesn't really act like a "normal" conservative. His leftist roots were revealed in detail during a recent interview with Jordan Peterson.

Peterson also expressed his frustration with the degradation of education in general. This makes resistance to woke nonsense harder. This is from Rufo's description of the interview:

The Persuasion of Jordan Peterson

I have been engaged in an ongoing debate with Dr. Jordan Peterson about how to restrict DEI programs and racialist ideology in America's public institutions.

Earlier this month, I joined Dr. Peterson for dinner in Seattle before his live performance at the Paramount Theater. We ordered ribeye steaks -- Dr. Peterson is still practicing his beef, salt, and water diet -- and had a wide-ranging discussion about politics, culture, law, and psychology. He told stories from his clinical practice and shared his frustrations with the political system, which seems to be a point of both fascination and horror for him. He knows the brutal histories of the Soviet Union, for example, but has a certain hesitation about political action, including the relatively modest reforms I have proposed in public education.

The video below is Jordan Peterson's podcast, Imposing Limits on the Woke, and begins with a bit of his rant about teacher's colleges and departments of education. Why do they have a hammerlock on teacher certification? Why do conservatives allow this? This has been a negative force in education for 50 years. (The Feds have been involved for almost that long, too. And they are now pushing DEI, which Rufo is currently fighting in universities.)

*

A few notes I made on the video in case you don't want to listen to the entire podcast. It's long, but interesting. You might want to click over to YouTube, where the video is more heavily segmented, with descriptions of the general subject of each segment:

3 minutes
Rufo's background: His parents were lefties. His relatives in Italy talked about the ideologies of Marx and Gramsci. He and friends visited Berkeley in wonder as teens. It was while he was working on a 5 year documentary on "forgotten communities" for PBS that he started to change his thinking.

12 minutes
Attractiveness of leftism to the young. Rufo's 5 year documentary on people in Youngstown Ohio, Memphis Tennessee and Stockton California begins to change his mind about leftism.

24 minutes
At the end of the PBS project, the left shunned and excluded him. This left him pretty much without prospects for employment.

30 minutes
Bridges burned.

45 minutes
Some on the left secretly think their side has gone too far

47 minutes
What is CRT, exactly? How did it evolve from a "theory in law school" to a plan for activism? In this general segment, there's some discussion of the influences of Marxism vs. post-modernism. Rufo maintains that the basis of CRT in academia was in Marxism, according to the literature. Not true of Queer Theory.

These influences may have been intertwined later (Peterson). I think this view would be more in line with Cynical Theories.

54 minutes
Derrick Bell, the "father of CRT" started out as a hero of civil rights, but changed. Thomas Sowell describes his thinking as moving "from equality to revenge pessimism"

59 minutes
Kimberle Crensaw, who named both CRT and intersectionality. Activism. Again, CRT is not just a "theory taught in graduate law school".

104 minutes
Ron DeSantis, legislative moves

106 minutes
Activists must explain why some immigrants do better than whites, and why their programs sometimes violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Legal precedents for current moves by DeSantis.

112 minutes
Peterson sees the biggest problem in education as the capture of massive state funding by faculties of education. Rufo counters that legislatures have allowed them to proceed anti-democratically.

119 minutes
Moral framework and defining change

Jordan Peterson feels better about the "activist" nature of the changes being made in Florida and elsewhere after his discussion with Rufo. Many of his concerns were answered.

I respond to Curtin Yarvin's critique of the conservative takeover of New College of Florida. We should not fall into the pit of self-fulfilling pessimism -- even against massive odds, principled action yields unexpected opportunities.

Attracting the attention of the left will just make things worse.

Think that's likely?

Note: This was a daring move. But New College of Florida is a very small school which has been way too expensive to taxpayers compared to other state universities. Should taxpayers be able to choose something different from all the leftist-led universities funded by their tax dollars?

The Department of Education was established in 1979, when Jimmy Carter was in office. First link showing on its website is currently student loans. But there is also some history and an overview of the department on the front page.

Last updated in 2010:

What Is the U.S. Department of Education?

The U.S. Department of Education is the agency of the federal government that establishes policy for, administers and coordinates most federal assistance to education. It assists the president in executing his education policies for the nation and in implementing laws enacted by Congress. The Department's mission is to serve America's students-to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.

I think most people would agree that they have not lived up to their vision. But the "equal access" part of that vision has often morphed into various forms of equity programs, somehow.

In the 1860s, a budget of $15,000 and four employees handled education fact-finding. By 1965, the Office of Education had more than 2,100 employees and a budget of $1.5 billion. As of mid-2010, the Department has nearly 4,300 employees and a budget of about $60 billion.

CDR Salamander has been writing pieces for Diversity Thursdays for some time now. This is a very nice piece.

Some developments on the "Diversity Statement" front ... or "DEI Statement" or "DEIA Statement" or whatever they are calling it this week.

Let's check in where the other school's are, and then we'll finish up what is happening at our Navy's undergrad institution.

Thanks to John Sailer we have a look behind the curtain at the not so innocent "Diversity Statements" that so many colleges are making people fill out when applying for a teaching or tenure track position. Sure, they may tell you that there is no correct answer ... but ...

That's a pretty good one, I might steal it for future use. Personally I tend to identify ideologically as either nationalist libertarian or "vaguely alt right" with some qualifiers rather than conservative. That term is very broad, and also very much co-opted by one particular faction that can't seem to step away from its singular obsession with overseas wars. I put up with that for the first few years of my adult millennial life inasmuch as some Cold War cleanup was undoubtedly necessary, but then drifted toward third-party stuff when it became obvious that it wasn't just a phase.

This too, defining conservatism as preserving the status quo. This sort of blob conservatism along with the Cold Warrior type conservatism have effectively killed this label in the US politically.

Bill Mauldin who was a WWII cartoonist for Stars and Stripes once had to meet General Patton. There was a frank exchange of views and while Mauldin though Patton was crazy, he did think that Patton understood the tactics of leadership--you have to push spaghetti, not pull it in order to get anywhere. Rufo is a leader and he is pushing the weak noodle conservatives forward by words and deeds--not trying to coax conservatives to accept his premises.

Alternative, like alt rock (which is what most rockerboys identify as since the mid 90s). It started out as a pejorative and got watered down when the MSM decided to apply it to everyone from Glenn Beck to Glenn Greenwald, the only real common thread being dissatisfaction with the international permanent bureaucracy and its institutional tendrils. And if that's how we're defining it then hell yeah I'm alt right, and so is just about everyone that doesn't work in DC or Brussels.

Yarvin's take is that the solution is found in monarchy where the sole ruler has an interest in the future as opposed to a bureaucratic state made up of short timers who want to asset strip for their retirement. However he has not been able to explain the failures of France's or Spain's total monarchies and how to keep from repeating them

I suppose that I am as guilty as anyone in decrying a political theory as both too utopian in scope, and not bringing the utopia about fast enough, but Yarvin seems to call for centralized power in the hands of "competent and invested elites" which is eerily similar to the goals of Woodrow Wilson

OG conservative philosopher Edmund Burke really nailed the difference in a lot of his writings. But like you say, what passes for conservatism has very little in common with the very pragmatic approach outlined by Burke et al.

Part of it is that the GOP and its leadership are educated by and large now at the same elite institutions that leftists attend. Business conservatism of the status quo means that making money and not taking any risks challenging whatever leftists declare is the status quo. Quite a few GOP members are not there to legislate policy but to get rich (or richer) and make business connections. This was true of the Dems but the true leftists have now made a serious run at leading the party and may well succeed.

74 MIT is hosting a debate in a few weeks on DEI. Heather MacDonald and Nadine Strossen (!!!) are arguing AGAINST DEI.

MIT can't find anyone willing to take the "PRO" side of the debate. Even MIT's own DEI people won't defend it. Harvard, next door, has 90 people in their DEI bureaucracy and a brand new "Chefe Diversity Officer", but none of them will show up.

Several professors who support DEI, one from MIT and the other from a California law school, initially accepted but have now backed out.

Can anyone suggest someone who will take the pro-side, and can debate at the level of MacDonald/Strossen?

80 Alt right was a term that started about 2011 probably derived from the term 'alternative press'. Alt press was non-corporate media and generally counter-cultural. (Think those 'zines and underground publications in the '90s.) The Alt press term was subsumed by the Internet and the resulting thousands of blogs that had little to no ties to corporate media.

Alt-right just meant non-GOP establishment Right in the US, primarily those that did not believe the GOP and it's donor have conservatism in mind. Think of any number of outlets and commenters that understand that we aren't being served by the nexus of DC, media, and trans-national corporations.

For some reason, that anti-establishment term got hijacked by the Left to include saboteurs like that spencer ass. They wrapped it around him and the original anti-establishment Right in order to anathematize the surging conservative movement during the Obaka regime. The GOPe and traditional outlets let it happen of course because it was a convenient way to silence them.

No, the true problem with monarchy is that a state is too large to be controlled by one man, no matter how competent. He has to have a bureaucracy to run it for him, which means he is no longer a sole ruler, but a manager over established subordinates who control how the state is run. Henry VIII - Elizabeth I is a good example of this, as was Stalin - Khrushchev. The only reason they weren't worse was because they were unable to control as much power over their states.

Then in 1994vthe education/pedagogy faculties literally imposed and imposed a 3year university program with internships. Fast forward to now and there's such a shortage ,school boards are hiring applicants without the license. Sure they'll be mentored. But kinda refutes the rational no?

93 1944 was a Leap Year.

Feb 29, 1944
Counter preparation caught Gerry off balance. His attack was more or less ragged against 3d. Our lines held well and took a lot of PW’s. 350 on latest report. Gerry shelled everything on the beach. 2 LST’s hit at the port. 141 [FA Bn] lost 2 guns. Light attack on SSF stopped. 30 man platoon at one place captured 4 officers and 107 EM [enlisted men] - killed 20 more - and had only three of our own men wounded slightly. Cloudy and rainy.

Correlating this entry with history.army.mil historical website (Chapter XI Anzio and Artillery), which reports:

On 29 February [the Germans] had eighteen 170-mm. guns, from which they fired 600 rounds; and on that day they fired only 12 rounds from their 2l0-mm. railroad guns. The railroad guns were freaks; but Anzio Annie symbolized a bitter truth—the Germans had in the 170-mm. a gun that outranged the best gun the Allies had, the 155-mm. Long Tom, with its maximum range of 25,700 yards.

Just about anyone on the right is capable of arguing the pro side of DEI, or any left wing project. Certainly better than the average NPC who blindly accepts their programming. I suspect the left wing 'experts' do understand enough of the contra arguments to know they would lose, so much better to not have the debate and give the NPCs a reason to start questioning their programming.

107 One of the problems at Anzio was that the beachhead was only about 7 miles deep, so that the German artillery could sit well back, out of range of the Allies' best guns, the 155 mm Long Toms, yet still reach the rear areas, (HQ, supply depots, harbor, loading docks, etc.) effectively.

When someone dies under mysterious circumstances in Russia you ask, was this someone acting in Putin's interests? Then you ask...in Russia's interesting? Righting a wrong?

Here in America though you don't have to go back the first answer - we consistently see people murdered that are a problem for those in the Junta and they've gotten to the point where they are intentionally rubbing in our faces.

Another Russia oligarch feel out of a high rise? Well, I mean it could happen. A DNC staffer was "mugged" to death and nothing was stolen? A Clinton associate was tied to a tree, hung, and shot with a gun in the chest and...the gun isn't there but you call it suicide? Oh sure...

You can see one of the core problems we face by comparing the left with the right as far as "making a difference".

Let's suppose as a leftist you want to advance the cause. There are an endless number of groups you can join, with whatever level of risk, effort, and time you want to put to them and a focus on whatever part of leftism you are most interested in.

The right? Well, we've got organizations that basically do nothing and organizations that you'll be fired from your job if people find out you are a member. Oh and there are almost no jobs for conservatives that have gotten tagged as "conservative activists" So...good luck with that.

148 I'm with the guy who was claiming the teaching of English Lit has gone downhill. It's easy to claim the DEI/Woke/ the MESSAGE stuff has done it, but the decline started long before it. I learned more about good literature from my own solitary forays into the school and public library than I did in English Lit class at any level of education. After a while I felt convinced that English Lit classes were designed to get kids turned off to reading for pleasure and self-enlightenment. It seemed like everything being assigned was pessimistic, fatalistic, and often displayed a self-loathing for Western Civilization along with an ignorance for how precious and fragile that civilization was to have. (And people wonder how LOTR got to be an all-time best seller...) This was all in the Eighties and Nineties, long before the DEI idiots got their degrees.

The Russia vaccine is based on the J&J one. The FNM tells me the Chinese one, which is actually a real vaccine, doesn't work.

3. Pay in cash with a winkwink
4. Cheat the government whenever possible
5. Steal all your entertainment
6. If you know of tax cheating, keep your mouth shut
7. If called to jury, refuse to convict if you think the law unjust
8. Discriminate in all your private dealings, without openly saying so. Never miss an opportunity to quietly do a Commie dirty.
9. If you see a CoC sticker on a business, go elsewhere
10. Vote against all tax levies, particularly school levies

The fact that conservative people generally don't do this drives me nuts.

We've discussed at length how conservatives can't get justice in DC because the left just decides guilt on whether you are a conservative or not.

And yet even in red areas people will vote to convict conservatives for violating bull shit laws. Remember the guy that got 19 years for stealing a gay flag...in Kansas? I bet most of the jurors voted for Trump, would say the gay agenda is destroying the country, and yet all voted to convict the guy.

Yarvin is one to talk about realistic goals. His yearning for a monarchy makes Catholic integralists look downright mundane. And it's no solution; have you seen modern monarchs? Charles III, anyone? You need to change the culture first, which he deems impossible. If Yarvin were working for the other side, what would he do differently?

Rufo is a national hero. It takes a special courage to do what he does. Most conservatives would rather charge unarmed into a Fallujah terrorist bunker than take on an online cancel mob. He's not just conducting a late-night college bull session, he's actively changing things. He deserves a Medal of Freedom. It's time for conservatives to stop hunkering down and start going on the offensive. Nonviolently, of course. He's showing the way.

No, he was very much right, and since the PLA had a lot of guns, he was able to prove it! The Angry Activist Left learned about Mao at home and school, which is why Gun Control has been shoved in our collective faces.

Racism and racial discrimination and totalitarian practices are all repugnant, and speak for themselves (and this is clearly, and only, what "CRT" and related nonsense are). And yet while vastly overly academic and even stilted, lots of common sloppy errors are still thrown in ("this is Marxism" - medium-length boring explanation needed, but a head-shaker).

And just look at a few sentences of that absurd biz school material. Slave labor and plantation economics are the antithesis of capitalism - obviously - it's just utterly retarded, illiterate nonsense posing as history or serious thinking.

There's an increasing amount of DEI crap (look for the word "Stakeholders" and you'll find it) snaking its way into the B-school curriculum. One of my good friends (one of the few Deans at a major B-school ) twisted a lot of panties when he made a VERY long response on the AACSB forun in defense of what used to be non-controversial idea that "the only responsibility of a business is to maximize the wealth of its shareholders").

He and my Dean (an old-school conservative/libertarian economist) were writing an essay on the topic, but they had to shelve it because my friend was in the running for a university president position, and letting that be known would have been a death-knell.

I go up for tenure at my current school this year - if I get it, I'll take over my friend's role in writing the piece, since I have no desire to move up the ladder.

When the left started their march through the institutions, everyone laughed at them. America seemed so solidly conservative, it didn't seem like they had any chance at all. And of course many of their early efforts (and later ones too) failed. But they doggedly and persistently kept at it. And gradually, fittingly at first, gained ground. And now, some 100 years later, they control virtually everything.

You can't say of every measure, "Well, this won't win the whole war, so why bother trying?" We need to keep trying all sorts of things, and when something fails, learn from it and try again. It's the only way to win in the long run. But it will take a long time, maybe as long as it took the left to win. It won't happen unless we start somewhere, sometime.

The parish staff member present didn't really have an answer, other than so-an-so gets them from an unknown source.

Well, I got voted-in as Chairman for the Worship Commission and immediately emailed the parish staff member that the intercession was not in keeping with orthodox teaching of the Catholic Church. We have a meeting next week.

Our regional Worship Commission meets in two weeks and the Pastor is supposed to be present. I plan to make this an issue: CRT violates Church dogma (we are granted different gifts by God, and to claim privilege cuts-out God from the equation).

I agree, change requires both a different future and a different understanding of now, and lasting change is not sudden and abrupt, unless it is at the level of loosing a leg, and that is not so much change as it is a tragedy.
my concern with Yarvin is that he seems to be calling for a Progressive framework for society, pinning the responsibility on Hoppe, and claiming it is something else. I would be interested in it if he show that he really is talking about something else, but I haven't seen it yet.

Even Hoppe only claims that monarchy is slightly better than a democracy, but has also stated that any state violates its self claimed purposes and violates all social contracts it uses to justify its actions. Mind you, I LIKE Hoppe, I just think he is wrong about some of his stuff, and he hasn't convinced me different so far.

Which is probably another big reason that the Left worked tirelessly to demonize men/males. Because they do a good job at helping foolish girls/women to see the error of their liberal ways and convert them to the ways of logic, reason and rationality.

258 I don't know why I type this. I did not intend to watch the interview, but KT's breakdown got me interested. Thanks KT.

1. Missing context - JP was critical of FLA gov. dictating acceptable speech. I think this stems from his experience in Can., and is a blindspot for him. I think Ronny D. is 100% correct.

2. Missing logic - How did this happen? They go into the mechanics (teaching colleges, evil plans,..) but only superficially. The missing factor is the funding. This also applies to "Whole word," and Whole language" pedagogy - this happened because of federal funding.
Schools get massive funds through the feds (Thanks Jimmah!) for targeted programs and the schools never refuse because they see this as free money. They take the money and hire consultants and specialists for special programs ("special needs," remediation, etc. and all the crap that O'f---wad put in place.) No room for details, but IMHO money is the lever and marxism is the fulcrum they are using to move the world.
3. For that reason Rufo is right, but wrong. Legislation on activities is bound to fail. JPs instincts that they will find a way to weasel around laws is dead on. This brings up a another point

Aside: Buck posted his razor a few weeks ago on his MR, and it bring to mind my observation:
----------
All intangible assets not directly owned and controlled by individuals will be diverted to the benefit of those individuals who do control it.
---------
The asset here is federal funding, and the control is given to bureaucrats from the local level all the way up. There is no oversight since the weak controls in place at the local level see it as free money.
(Again, pixy limits prevent too much detail.)

Back to my main points.

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at March 05, 2023 12:08 PM (Gmx/k)

260 Back to point 3

I think Rufo's laws are just a speed bump. I also think fixing the academic problem is very important, although I do agree with Rufo that we also have to address the mess that has already escaped into society.
Foundational changes need to be made in k-12 and colleges, and the first step is funding. It has to be local. CA and other big states also had the problem of massive state funding and I think that is why we first saw this crap like whole language in CA and other big states.
So I think JP is weary because he understands the problem of gov. mandated speech, but he is not quite getting it. I, myself, cringed when Rufo said he is setting up a new "office" of just a couple people who will make sure the goals are met.
That had me laugh/crying. I bet in 10 years under a dem or rep governor that office will have dozens of people and they will be coming up with new ways to waste money and missteach kids.

261 Oh yeah.
It was annoying listening to two canceled lefties talking about how comedy and creativity is part of the left leaning mind.

JP puts way too much faith in his psychobabble measures of personality. Maybe conservatives are very creative but they also understand the physical limitations of reality.

262 OK, I finally finished reading the whole post.
I see KT brought up both Carter and funding. Sorry if I seemed dense.
Also:
"' Successful political activism relies on three lines of effort: the narrative line, the policy line, and the action line.'
Did he learn that when he was a leftist?"

Yeah, I thought that too. It is a good very breakdown though. The Right needs to think like this.
narrative line - they are all pedo commies.
policy line - Off with their heads
action line - (redacted.)
