Last Weekend in Black History Month

sowell vs kendi.jpg

Are you tired of Black History Month yet? It's easy to get overwhelmed. But some sort of amusing things have happened this month. And we really don't have to concentrate only on black history, do we?

One thing that has been brought into focus this month is that the academic and pop-culture world has been studiously ignoring Thomas Sowell. They go with the guy who has the fancy dreds and the made-up name instead.

Nikole Hannah-Jones takes on Thomas Sowell

From Neo: And makes a fool of herself

Other than being Black, what exactly is Sowell's expertise in slavery or history?

Yeah, it's kind of funny. But it's also tremendously sad, because millions more young people absorb Hannah-Jones' utterly mendacious work than will ever become familiar with Sowell's brilliant oeuvre. And it's not just young people, either.

Over the years, I've asked many friends to read some of Sowell's books. To date, as far as I know, not one of them has done so. It's not just their loss; it's everybody's loss.

Check out the comments.

People may not read Sowell's books, but there are a lot of great Sowell quotes. What are your favorites?

Here's Twitchy on the inanity of the person who published a bunch of fake history in the 1619 Project. Nice compilation of reactions to this tweet (appropriating the name of an actual historic journalist):

As someone astutely pointed out, she is half black and Sowell is black, so he is automatically right. Those are the rules. Heh.

*

Gad Saad, the Canadian academic, is understated in an often-droll way. But this incident prompted him to re-up a video he had released earlier about why you should love Thomas Sowell.

Angela Davis discovers her lineage

She's not too happy.

Daniel J. Flynn has a great take: Howdy, Pilgrim

Angela Davis bought the guns used in a courthouse raid that murdered a judge, and she later served as Gus Hall's running mate on the Communist Party presidential ticket. But the former member of the FBI's Most Wanted list also hails from, much to her displeasure, a patrician lineage.

"Did you ever in your wildest dreams think you descended from the people who laid the foundations for this country?" Henry Louis Gates asks the professor on his PBS show Finding Your Roots. Davis laughs in disbelief and repeats, "Never."

Gates informs her that William Brewster, the only college graduate among the pilgrims and the likely author of the Mayflower Compact, came before her in her family line. . .

*

The pilgrims soon learned that socialism didn't work.

*

But wait, there's more. Another ancestor was a slave owner. On her mother's side this time.

George Washington's Birthday

Scott Johnson at Powerline put up a post on Remembering the Indispensable Man. He discussed many reasons to remember Washington, but a particularly relevant one today was this:

In anticipation of Washington's visit to Newport, the members of America's oldest Jewish congregation prepared a letter welcoming Washington for presentation to him at a public event on the morning of August 18. The letter was authorized by the congregation's board and signed by its president, Moses Seixas. It is Washington's magnificent letter responding to Seixas that that has become famous as one of the classic statements of religious toleration in America.

The congregation's letter to Washington is not so well known, although the most prominent line in Washington's letter echoes that letter. By far the most striking feature of the congregation's letter is its expression of sheer gratitude to Washington himself and to America for the freedom and equal rights the congregants had attained as American citizens.

The text of the remarkable letter is included at the link.

He moved there because his partner is Brazilian. The partner also is from a leftist party and IIRC, threw his wholehearted support behind Lula. Which makes Glenn's commitment to free speech kind of awkward at family dinners, I think.

49 Sowell like a few others is so good because he illuminates and instructs on basics, and those basics mostly amount to common sense, human nature, and history and society as directly observed.

As CBD said, he puts economic basics in easily understood terms.

Meanwhile, the mere existence (in their "jobs", being paid, not being mocked and marginalized) of cretins like "Xendi" and Jones is a pretty definitive indictment of of the slide of American society in the last 30 or so years, when racism was revived, re-engineered, and weaponized as a tool for a different class of greedy power-mongers and grifters.

Somehow I think he forgot to include Gen. Truscott in his planning conference.

PW report = Debriefing or scuttlebutt from German prisoners about the German plans. Big German push along the road to Caroceto and The Factory has the Allies (mostly Brits) back on their heels in that sector. But this is nearly the low point, the German advance is about to be stopped.

And consider this: I haven't looked at the numbers, but they say Trump had a much higher percentage of black and hispanic votes than past Republican candidates.

Is it possible, it WAS actual votes from those demographics that gave him the win? As in, the more ACTUAL votes cast by black and hispanic voters meant the democrats couldn't manufacture enough fake votes to overcome it? As in, if an actual person who typically does not vote, actually votes, then they can't cast the vote for that person for them.

Worth considering.

82 There is a professor at Yale who gives a quiz to students at the beginning of his course.

A majority of his students think that only the United States ever had slavery.

But that's because they read things like "A People's History of the United States", which never acknowledges that slavery existed elsewhere.

I wonder what percentage of the American population knows that more slaves were imported into Jamaica than the United States.

88 I didn't care about black history month when it started. The constant repetition of the same material over the decades hasn't improved matters.

How about changing it to Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas and Walter Williams appreciation month? Not because they are black but because, between them, they constitute about 70 percent of the brainpower in this country. (Walter Williams passing diminished the entire country.)

105 Considerable commentary around the following Tweet:

College admission season update - From a friend:

“Niece got 1450 SAT, 4.2 GPA, competitive athlete. She didn’t even get into her safety schools. Going to junior college this year and is very depressed. The POC kids in her class, C students at best, are all headed to Berkeley, UCLA, USC, and Stanford.”

Left-wing response to the Tweet is still at the "This is not possible and is a lie" stage, but I'm sure they'll soon shift to "This is good that this is happening" stage.

Mickey Kaus noted a few years ago at one of Los Angeles' better private high schools that almost all the minority graduates from the school that year were accepted at the University of California, and that almost none of the white graduates were accepted.

There is a reason why students are now furiously searching for any evidence that they have minority ancestry.

106 Muldoon, grazzie!

I'll reply with this from the B-26's pilot's diary:

"George Washington's birthday. This was the big push that was to sever the Germans' communications system. Out target was a marshaling yard in the town of Montarbaur, Ger. We bombed at 5000 ft (regular alt is between 2000-14,000 ft). After dropping our bombs we peeled off and went down on the deck and strafed the marshaling yard and factories.

I got a direct hit from 40mm in the right wing. The plane completely out of control for about 10 sec. I told the crew to get ready to bail out even though we were only about 75 feet above the ground. I really thought we were through for a short time. I finally got the plane under somewhat of a control and giving the old Marauder everything it had we started gaining altitude.

I was reading about some of the early conquests of sub-Saharan Africa by Arab/Berber Muslims.

Oddly this is not covered in modern college courses.

Related, in its own way: Recently MLB decided to include the records from the Negro Leagues into the official statistics of the game, adding players who played prior to the color barrier being lifted, into the record books.

So now there are lists of players whose exploits were mostly known through oral and written narrative, who have numbers incorporated into MLB record books.

Except everyone who knows, knows those numbers are not even close to accurate.

Oh well, if it makes somebody somewhere feel better, I guess that's what is important.

When I was teaching at the MI skool, one of the hardest things to get done properly was this simple task:
The Observer calls in a report...Three enemy tanks at grid 123456.
The radio guy writes down "3 tanks" and grid 123456.
The intel analyst now has to post the map. What does he/she do? Put three tank symbols on the map, or use a Tank platoon symbol? Teaching young troops to make this synaptic leap is hard.
And then...tank platoons never travel alone. New intwl.requirement is where is the rest of the tank company?

15 miles is close to max range so time of flight will be 40 seconds (give or take). Depending on the latitude, and given standard temperature, I'd call it a scooch. Maybe a tad. But the bursting radius is 80 meters So it really doesn't matter.

I know people who are crooks, who go to sales and say to the seller "oh, this is junk, but I'll take it off your hands for $15," then turn around and sell it for $1500.

Sometimes people just want to get rid of things, and if fine if you recognize the value of something, and they don't. You're doing them a favor taking it off their hands, and they're doing you a favor by letting your knowledge make you a little something something out of it.

255 One of my fave garage-sale finds (nowhere near the most lucrative,) was an inclinometer. It's a little aluminum bar with a couple of spirit levels in it; I guess cavers use it, I didn't know what it was.) It was marked twenty-five cents, sold for $75.

My gf cleaned up in every category; she knew the eBay prices of everything. She hit big on an old $1 Dawn doll (sold for $750,) several pieces of fine art, and jewelry. She taught me everything about inspecting precious metals.

Lot of categories cooled off after the Antiques Roadshow phenomenon faltered.

262 Garage sales are best, because they are the most inefficient markets (sellers have poor pricing info.) Estate sales and auctions generally suck, because you are competing with buyers who know what stuff is worth, and there's also the middleman markup.

On the back it says 'The 1619 Project'.

I keep a couple of these in my wallet so that in the event that I am ever waited on by a woke, leftist server or bartender that espouses the whole narrative I can will be left on the table in lieu of a tip.

I'm sure that's true. I've never heard of a large forgery market for baseball cards though... I'm sure they exist. But I'm not in that part of the market, I don't want anything that has a PSA rating. If there's a bit of fuzz around the corner, or the face is slightly faded, that's fine by me.

Some of those Mantle cards (and Ryan cards and Rose cards and a handful of others), the PSA 9s and 10s go for tens or hundreds of thousands, if not millions. But the non-rated, very good to near mint ones, sell in the hundreds.

You can cruise thru rich neighborhoods and often find great stuff just sitting on the curb for the trashman to pick up. Some towns, I swear the people wash their trash before they put it out.

For antiques and collectibles, target the neighborhoods where the Old Farts live. Beware that low- and mid-range antiques don't sell like they used to; collectors are discovering that today's young generations aren't interested in buying their old-ass stuff. Categories go in and out of fashion.

318 Grump, is your Perception a Piroette?

The auction one is a Dance. I don't like it. Too short.

I prefer my old Quest.

326 Grump, I paddled the Nantahala with an old geezer had a Fol-Boat. Last I saw him he was coming out of the Nantahala Outdoor Center with a new Dagger somrthing or other, he had one end snd a cute NOC rivergirl had the other. Good times when I was rivertrash.

328 Most amazing (not the most lucrative!) piece of fine art we found was a painting by one of the well-known 19th century California landscapists, forget his name. Due to condition, we got only $150 for it, but a stunning find.

We found a painting by a dead Hungarian artist, forget his name, sold it to his heirs in Europe for $650.

The Nantahala is a good example of how times have changed. When I first ran it, the Lesser Wesser was rated a 4, even though it is a flush. I think it's a weak 3 now. People run it in duckies.

Sowell came initially from poverty, but his pulsating megabrain qualified him for good schools in the capitalist imperialist pigdogocracy. So he went from Commie to human in short order, once he started thinking about things.

Clarence Thomas followed a similar trajectory.

If only prestigious schools still educated people, we might get fewer high-IQ retards running around ruining everything.

Lookin' at you, Kendi.

A guy I knew inherited some paintings by a middling level western artist. Online auctions sold in the low four figures. So the guy took the paintings to art shops and museums, seeing if anyone wanted to buy them, and of course the Philistines with whom he was dealing had no idea who the artist was, or what the paintings were worth.

Last I heard he was going to throw them out. Because it was bothering him so much to have these paintings hanging over his head (no pun intended).

343 I don't remember the exact quote, but I remember being impressed by it. Sowell was referring to some of the "fairness" folks and said something very close to:

"these are the people who assume that good things happen automatically, but bad things are always somebody's fault."

I would say that high-ranking people falling from windows frequently would indicate instability. But it might be the opposite.

High-ranking people here shoot themselves in the chest, run away, dispose of the gun, run back, tie themselves by the neck to a tree and then die on a more-or-less biannual basis, so maybe mysterious deaths are just a requirement of government work these days.

Saying that the weaponless Epstein/Clinton go-between shot himself somehow, before or after he tied himself to a tree with an extension cord, is right up there with a lot of stuff the Clintons do.

DC Park Police say Vince Foster shot himself and then wandered off to a park to finish dying. AR Staties said Don Henry and Kevin Ives smoked too much weed and then passed out on some train tracks by the airfield. MCC guards said Epstein waited for the cameras to go out while the other guards were sleeping, so that he could manually strangle himself to death and also scream a lot at the same time. DC police said that Seth Rich was murdered in a botched robbery that had no theft involved or any suspects.

I think the Clintons have fun writing these stories.

349 Don Cheadle was another shocked guest on Gates' heritage show.

His records indicated that his ancestors were never owned by white people--they were owned by Cherokee Indians!

Posted by: GlowieZ at February 25, 2023 05:38 PM (rCpz/)

353 There may not be a lot of black commenters here, but there are some. That's not the point. There's lots of black history all around us. As you say, "What's the point" of this particular focus by academia, etc?
Next year, more Thomas Sowell: "Why are the traditional classics of Western civilization written by dead white males?
Take it a step at a time. They are written by dead people for two reasons: First, there are more dead people than living people. Second, a classic is not something that is hot at the moment but something that survives the test of time. . .
Why were they white? Do we ask why the great classics of China were written by people who were Chinese? If we found that the great classics of China were written by Swedes, wouldn't we wonder what the hell was going on?"

Posted by: KT at February 25, 2023 06:06 PM (rrtZS)

354 I wish Thomas Sowell had been our first black president. But now we are looking are WWIII, which, if I understand it at all, is meant "to make the world safe for Michelle Obama's willie."
