Depression and Suicidality Surge Among Teenage Girls and This Correlates With Smartphone Usage.
Internet Addict Taylor Lorenz Says It's Just "This Late-Stage Capitalist Hellscape" That's to Blame, Not My Precious TikTok!

Evidence is mounting that people, and young girls in particular, experience very negative psychological outcomes when they use social media.

I would say "too much social media," but I think any amount of social media is too much social media for kids.

Supposedly one in three girls have "seriously considered" suicide, up 60% from ten years ago, and three in five teenaged girls say they have been or are so depressed multiple weeks in a row that they suspend normal daily activities.

Mollie Hemingway talks about that here on a Fox show, stating that parents need to love their children enough to keep them off of social media.

John Sexton wrote a couple of weeks ago that cognitive psychologist Jonathan Haidt noticed that this sudden rise in psychological problems among young people just happened to coincide with the mass adoption of the smartphone.

Nearly all researchers now agree that there are correlations between (crude measures of) time spent using social media and (crude self report measures of) mental health problems, but there is heated disagreement about the size and significance of these effects. Some researchers believe the correlations are in the ballpark of r = .04, and are of no practical significance; others find that the correlations are between r = .10 and r = .20, which is the size of many other public health threats.

The authors find curvilinear effects in which one or two hours a day is associated with better outcomes than is zero usage, yet after that, outcomes become worse. The lowest "goldilocks point" and sharpest drop is for "using smartphones," which is the category likely to include most social media use.

It is due to claims like these that the Surgeon General general has warned that parents must not let children use social media until they're older.

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy warned that children join social media too early and believe they should only be allowed to access the platforms once they're between 16 and 18.
Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Twitter currently allow users to join as long as they are at least 13 years old.
Murthy believes this can cause adolescents to have a "distorted' sense of self during their crucial developmental years.
"I, personally, based on the data I've seen, believe that 13 is too early," Murthy said on CNN. "It's a time where it's really important for us to be thoughtful about what's going into how they think about their own self-worth and their relationships and the skewed and often distorted environment of social media often does a disservice to many of those children."
Murthy says parents should do their best to keep their children off these platforms until they reach their mid- to late teenage years.

Murthy suggested that teenagers on social media will become "hypersensitive" to criticism as adults.

Really? You don't say? I haven't seen any evidence of that!

Most of us probably all use the internet too much, and most of us are aware we use it too much, and most of us probably think about reducing our internet usage from time to time.

Personally, I'm looking into blocking out my time during the day and limiting my consumption of YouTube videos to when I'm exercising. If should have to pay for my indulgence, or something.

Hardcore addicts will never admit they're addicted, though. If you suggest there's a problem with using so much of their drug of choice, they will begin screaming and cursing and making up reasons why they have to use the drug.

And if you bring up negative consequences of the drug, they'll claim those aren't due to the drug, but due to something else entirely.

Taylor Lorenz is obviously an internet addict. Her sickly, sallow complexion is enough to tell you that the only light she gets is from LEDs.

Taylor Lorenz doesn't want anyone talking about restricting kids' access to social media because she makes her money off kids' access to social media. She wants kids to be crazy and depressed and suicidal -- as long as they keep using the social-contagion app she loves so much and which is her main "beat," TikTok.

So, as John Sexton reports, of course Taylor Lorenz had to defend the Social Contagion Madhouse TikTok, and say that girls aren't depressed and suicidal because of her drug of choice, Internet Addiction, but just because of all this Late Stage Capitalism Hellscape we're experiencing.

I'll refer you to Sexton's link for more, like the objection, "When in human history has it been better to be a teenaged girl?" In other words, this "late stage capitalist hellscape" is delivering medicine and riches to current year girls that have never been seen in all of history.

So that's why they're depressed? From having it too good?

That's absurd, of course. If "capitalism" is to blame here, it's comparative capitalism, looking at what other people have and feeling envious, and that is especially possible in current year because of... social media, with influencers fast-talking their way on board a private plane for five minutes just to take a selfie and then to later lie and claim they'd chartered it.

One guy points out that Taylor Lorenz, who is most definitely not a teenager and is approaching 50, seems to be reading her insecurities into teenaged girls.

She claims that teenaged girls aren't depressed due to gossip and bullying and comparing -- things all made easier and ubiquitous by the cell phone -- but due to hair pulling about global warming and having... "0 job security"?

Teenage girls are worried they might get laid off from Cinnabons, huh?

People argue with her, rebutting her stupid, self-interested, self-justifying claims one by one, Taylor insists that her Boyfriend, TikTok, isn't responsible for the depression and suicidality of teenage girls.

Her status, her income, and her carefully-curated image depend on social media! Stop saying bad things about her Boyfriend!

Sexton links a couple of creepy TikTok videos by Taylor Lorenz, in which this middle-aged woman clearly presents herself as a near-teenager. I won't link them -- go to the end of this article to see them, and decide if you want to click on a TikTok link -- but Sexton's description is accurate:

Finally, Lorenz' exact age remains a mystery but she's probably about 40 years old [or older-- ace] and yet she really makes an effort to portray herself as if she's about 21, which is deeply weird. It's not just these tweets. She has a whole persona online in which she is clearly trying to be a 20-something.

She's mentally ill and one of those new breed of mentally ill people who are proud of their mental illness and want to recruit -- groom -- children into their mental illness.

She is a truly rancid person.

The traditional family model would have someone of Taylor's age have a family, or a network of friends with children to spend time and attention. There have been lots of anecdotes of feminists and career women getting into this phase of life and having regrets.

I agree, and I also think this is an area where a rational, even-handed and legal use of regulation could help. Social media should be restricted to adults. It's dangerous and addictive. If alcohol is forbidden to those under 21, so should social media.

But of course, if this government were to take some action to limit social media usage by minors, it will instead increase that usage, remove any protections and use it as an excuse to stifle speech instead because everything in our government is horrible.

I'm skeptical of this particular claim. Medicine here includes things like the pill, abortion, HPV vaccine - all things that distort traditional female behavior, allowing (encouraging really) women to be more promiscuous, forego committed relationships, and delay childbirth, sometimes to the point of losing the ability to have children altogether. This has indeed "never been seen in all of history" and I doubt it's improving women's lives one iota.

Pretty much. They just sit there an look at the phone. Its hard to feel accomplished when that is how you spend your waking day.

If you have to have to milk the cows, feed the chickens, drive the tractor, go to school, do your homework and play basketball. Its not hard to feel accomplished, confident and to have real connections. Kids don't do actual stuff anymore, its mostly virtual stuff. Which is almost stuff, but not quite -- video games or social media. I posted a tic tok video of myself and people responded whoopee!! oh wait they are saying my nose is too big sadzzz.

Perhaps but there is also the new trend of young women thinking they are 10s and should only have relationships with 1 percent of the men out there, but have sex all the time. I'm not sure how being crushed by peer group pressure produces that.

Social Media is very, very good at doing this, and it isn't just the "influencers."

The real problem is the everyday curation of what goes up on the page, by everyday users. What do you see when you log in to social media platforms? You'll see your "connections" or "friends" and what they post, but what they post is likely to be good. People don't put up Facebook statuses about their constipation or what mean thing their kid did or how they switched from name brand Kraft Dinner to the store brand or whatever. There is some of this, but not much.

People curate to make it look good, and it does. And as you read it, you see people you know in real life (especially on Facebook) that look like they are better off that *you.* They go on vacation or have a nice meal and your life is in tatters. It isn't true, but it *looks* true and you actually know the subject, at least sort of. It will raise despondency easily.

Probably not much, at least not in isolation. Some might be unhappy that things still aren't back to normal where they come from, but that's probably just one facet of it. A black TV screen isn't really off, which is bad (a dark room is better than a room with a big, glowing rectangle in it) but thankfully my TV has a "turn off the screen but otherwise remain and working" mode.

video games work on the same principle as social media, its all about the dopamine hit.

in games, you are given arbitrary roadblocks, boss battle, a puzzle and its hard enough that you can't do it for a while. Eventually you overcome it with persistence and get a dopamine reward.

The makers are basically drug dealers. They sell you something that releases the drug inside you. I play games a bit - gave them up for a few years but now from like December to Opening day I play a bit. Its too depressing in the winter time here and the games keep the mind a bit sharper than drinking. When the weather gets nice - I put them down and don't even think about them until the skies get gray and the snow falls.

Huh? The modern credit card - that is, the "open-loop" card that can be used at various places (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) was invented in 1958 by Bank of America (the Bank Americard) and didn't really take off until the early 70s. Prior to and along with "open-loop," there were also closed-loop systems (a store credit card, usually a department store) and semi-open systems (like Diner's Club). Women were not only not forbidden from *any* of this, they were often the target market for them, especially the closed-loop cards. Momma needs to clothe and shoe the kids this year and buy bedding and whatnot. They not only wanted, they *needed* the lady cardholders.

Is the argument that women had cards in their husbands' names or dependent on their husbands' jobs because the husband was the breadwinner, and therefore credit cards were oppressive because the lenders didn't give them to unemployed people with no incomes?

On a side note, when we had the big flood in Houston and they were rescuing people trapped in their homes, they were launching the rescue boats in front of my house. One rescue crew came back and said one of the entrance gates was chained. I offered my bolt cutters which they accepted and said they would bring back . I never saw them again. I made lemonade out of lemons and bought a bigger and better pair.

Skyrim and Fallout can get a bit twitchy about taking things that don't belong to you. It's basically a death sentence if you get caught, though Skyrim will let you surrender (usually). NPCs in Fallout will straight up murder you if you steal their stuff. But yes, the games overall encourage a certain amount of creative thievery through various mechanisms.

I read an attack on that thesis a long time ago that compared kids in Windsor, Ontario with kids in Detroit, just across the river, who played similar amounts of videogames but had different social outcomes.

I suspect it's different with social media and negative outcomes though as suicide rates etc. are up here too.

In fallout, if you try and steal somebody's stuff they'll try and kill your ass. When you open a chest, if you highlight it to take it, if it is not abandoned property it will highlight red and note "steal" so you make a conscious choice and pay a price if you steal. Was that in fallout 3? Now they also have a pickpocket skill that you can select and develop or not. If you get caught picking a pocket, you are going to get attacked and take a reputation hit with that faction.

That would be a decent answer (though I think it should be 21). That is not the answer we'll get. If they decide to write a law about it, it will be unenforceable and about 5,000 pages long, establishing tons of "review commissions" and "content filtering requirements for network platforms in the interests of minor protection" and other such trash that will turn it into even more of an intrusive, unfree panopticon than it is now.

I'm no dummy but the stuff that goes on as far as "People You May Know" would make any neurotic teenage girl crazy. Buried in that algorithm is either

Every couple of days Facebook presents a "People You May Know' of an attractive female (both single or married) within a couple of miles from where my brother and sister live.

Where my divorce occurred, Colorado, marital property was what we acquired after we got married, and whatever accumulated in value during the marriage.
