And the last third, the one for whom this reportage is useful, says "wow, that was shocking! But I can't let anyone I know find out I watched it... if word gets out that I've been flirting with dangerous ideological heterodoxy, those NPC Jacobins may come for me next."

I think this is the distinction between a roiling boil and just starting to boil. So you have not gotten all of the liquid up to it's boiling point quite yet.

here's the thing that always bugs me about tv/movie gunfights:
guns are really loud. I fired a .45 outdoors with no hearing protection and my ears rang for hours. Yet these onscreen gunfights have people firing multiple rounds, indoors and out, with no hearing protection, and they seem unaffected.
It would be more realistic if everyone just shouted "WHAT?" to each other for the rest of the show.
