Good morning kids. So, tomorrow's State of the Union speech, if it isn't some sort of deep fake Max Headroom AI version of Sponge-Brain Shit's Pants in front of Congress, is sure to feature two themes: Donald Trump and anyone who voted for him is evil and a cancer to be eradicated, and the Chinese spy balloon is the fault of Donald Trump as well as the millions of us who put him in office – twice.

Aside from those themes, you can bet your bottom dollar, which is probably a quadruple-entendre given who is running the country (into the ground), that John Meacham, Michael Beschloss or whichever gag writer-cum-historian poseur wrote the thing will provide a laundry list of accomplishments that will paint this demented criminal pervert as the greatest president in history. Speaking of bottoms, just ask Peter-Puffer Buttigieg, whose successes include being AWOL during a continuing supply chain disaster, a near-crippling rail strike and a definitely crippling shutdown of commercial aviation a couple weeks ago is doing just that.

Of course, he along with every other inept, incompetent globalist Deep State flunky in the cabinet, get downright belligerent if the media allows any form of criticism to be hurled at the them during their generally Potemkin Village press conferences. But, I digress.

72 hours later and even in the face of all the other horrors and depredations inflicted on this great nation in the past two years (plus that other "gift" from China in the form of a Frankenvirus that turned the world upside down the year prior), the notion that a spy balloon from our greatest international enemy was allowed to even cross over into our airspace, let alone float unmolested over our ICBM missile silos in the High Plains is gobsmackingly inconceivable. And as stated, they're now trying to claim this is a nothing-burger because it happened during Trump's tenure and that he knew about it. That is complete and utter horseshit and it's been exploded already. It's almost the same refrain of phony equivocation with Document-gate meant to soften the blow.

As a complete aside, from a military/espionage/reconnaissance standpoint, this balloon is both interesting and terrifying at the same time. On the one hand, given the fact that we, and no doubt the Chi-Coms either have or have access to spy satellites that can read a Bazooka Joe bubblegum wrapper with crystal clear resolution from orbit, what does it mean that they're using balloons? On the other hand, something as primitive as a weather balloon is just the kind of Stone Age low-tech MacGyver kind of thing that could stymie the most sophisticated technology of NORAD.

Of course, given the Chi-Coms fully understand who is running the show here, and that our military has openly declared both "climate change" and "white supremacy" as our greatest threats, this could very well be something meant to probe both our defenses and more crucially our diplomatic resolve. Naturally, with Biden at the helm, we failed. Miserably.

Yet given the level to which the PRC has infiltrated virtually every aspect of our society and our government, and that Joe Biden has spent the past 50-plus years selling every office he ever held to the highest bidder, what is he really going to do to offend his paymasters in Peking? Yeah, I went there. I have no doubt that along with Ukraine, Biden is in the Central Committee's pocket. Of course he's not alone. There are far too many people in our government that have at best questionable and at worst criminal ties to Red China. Not just Dianne Feinstein and the flatulent Fang-Banger Swalwell, but Mitch McConnell via his wife Elaine Chao. Yay! Bipartisanship.

Like every other crime he's been accused of, here too Donald Trump is perhaps the last person anyone could ever accuse of having ties with the Chi-Coms. The fact that he was the first president in over 50 years to try and reverse the corrupt, corrosive influence of "free trade" with China (and others), via tariffs and sane trade policy, earned him the enmity of the Chinese and those who they have in their pocket here at home, that has sucked millions of jobs and entire industries out of our economy, That, in my mind, is probably why the General Tso's Sickness of COVID-19 wound up on our shores. How Trump reacted to it and who he trusted to run the response to it is another matter entirely, and one which is perhaps his biggest demerit as far as I'm concerned in having him be the standard-bearer for 2024. But I digress.

As we discussed over the past few podcasts, China's crashing birthrate, coupled with rising civil discontent brought about by the regime's handling of the COVID virus, and a crashing economy has, as my esteemed colleague and co-blogger Joe Mannix asserts (and I agree) put a premature end to what was until very recently touted as the 21st being the Chinese Century. Yet, Xi and his cronies are not going to just lick their wounds and back away from the table. They are still quite capable of not only projecting power but, given the fact that we have utterly incompetent leadership in this nation, maneuvering us into doing their bidding probably without even firing a shot. Or having a military capability so horribly degraded that any response will be doomed to fail.

What we are witnessing in Ukraine, and perhaps in a future conflict in Taiwan, is a new model for fighting Cold War 2, one in which the belligerents tacitly agree to fight but only within designated foreign borders. The process of delimiting the allowable combat area has so far been a complex exercise in signaling. For example, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev recently tried to draw some Red Lines: “If Ukraine tries to strike at Crimea, there will be retaliatory strikes, all Ukraine remaining under Kyiv’s rule will burn. The response in the event of strikes in the Crimea and deep into Russia will be quick, tough and convincing. Russia does not set itself any restrictions in the form of a response to attacks, depending on the nature of the threats, it is ready to use all types of weapons. Those who argue that sending weapons to Ukraine will help start negotiations are wrong, the result will be just the opposite.”
But he’s kidding no one. Everything is negotiated. Russia has manifestly set restrictions on itself by not attacking NATO sovereign territory, just as NATO has implicitly discouraged Kyiv from striking targets on Russian territory, except when they are directly linked to attacks on Ukraine. Both sides are fighting under implicitly negotiated rules of engagement, which to the extent they are understood and mutually accepted, have limited escalation so far.
Washington is probably hoping to apply the same framework to the looming conflict with China over Taiwan, which Pentagon leaks indicate may happen by 2025. The area of operations is likely to encompass the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and indeed any sea/land space in the First Island Chain. A USAF memo defined U.S. defense preparation as “a fortified, ready, integrated, and agile Joint Force Maneuver Team ready to fight and win inside the first island chain.” Implied in this formulation is the unspoken corollary: the Quad Alliance hopes to prevent war from spreading outside the First Island Chain to Guam, Hawaii, Japan, India, and Australia — in the same way that warfare may not spread to NATO countries, at least not without lighting the nuclear fuse.
This desire to preserve distinctions may have played a part in the Biden [junta's] reluctance to shoot down a Chinese high-altitude reconnaissance balloon recently spotted above the central United States. Forbearance signals not only what America will do, but it also defines what the administration expects China to do. With China and the space above it thronged with U.S. reconnaissance platforms, Biden may have decided to let the balloon slide for as long as he could rather than give Beijing an excuse to retaliate against a far more valuable American platform.

I'm a big fan of Richard Fernandez but I think he gives way too much credit for Biden and his flunkies to be playing some sort of 11-dimensional chess when in point of frightening fact they don't know their ass from their elbow. But as far as China lashing out, given their current situation, and ours, a move on Taiwan makes more and more sense, if for no other reason than to pacify/distract a restless populace. Plus, Taiwan has always been a sore point with them going back 70 years and along with global hegemony, the retaking of that island has been a central goal of the Chi-Coms since the took over the mainland in 1949.

I mentioned on the latest podcast the fact that the Iran has sent warships out of the Gulf to cruise around the waters near the Panama Canal. No doubt their navy, compared to ours even in the degraded state it's in, is still a joke. But the fact that we allow them to even do this sends the absolute wrong message about our resolve. Meh, we've been trying to give them atomic weapons going back to the original Obama reign of error, so what's the surprise? But, look at Central and South America these days and the "domino effect" is in full force. Iran and Venezuela have had close ties going as far back as Hugo Chavez with even fears of a missile base being constructed along the Caribbean coast. Anyone up for Bay of Pigs 2: Allen Dulles Boogaloo? Hell, we have a wide open and non-existent southern border where anyone can come through, and has. And I don't mean illiterate mestizo peasants headed for the Ernest and Julio Gallo vineyards either.

The figurehead of the United States of America is a doddering dementia patient who shakes hands with invisible people and has to be led around by his wife, while at the same time, our diplomats and top military brass are itching to go to war with half the American people who refuse to accept that men can have babies.

I think they were looking for other things because they knew that Republicans were going to be taking over the Congress and would have subpoena power.

So I think that this was a cleansing operation conducted by Biden's lawyers. Why else would lawyers be doing this rather than just hire a moving company and move the boxes? I think this was a cleansing operation. And in the course of that cleansing operation, the Biden lawyers were like, oh crap, we've got classified documents in here. What do we do now?

Regarding the questions about what was used to shoot down the ChiCom's balloon there are a number of sites that have assessed the event and the rational behind the use of a AIM-9X "Sidewinder" missile.

It boils down to safety for the pilot and effectively downing the balloon. Guns would have little effect on a 100 foot wide balloon and required multiple engagements to get it do deflate fast enough. The idea was to get the balloon down within the 12 mile recognized limit for American territory. This was accomplished and a couple ships are onsite searching/recovering the debris.

It was still a national fuck up from the get go.

103 Regarding the questions about what was used to shoot down the ChiCom's balloon there are a number of sites that have assessed the event and the rational behind the use of a AIM-9X "Sidewinder" missile.

It boils down to safety for the pilot and effectively downing the balloon. Guns would have little effect on a 100 foot wide balloon and required multiple engagements to get it do deflate fast enough. The idea was to get the balloon down within the 12 mile recognized limit for American territory. This was accomplished and a couple ships are onsite searching/recovering the debris.

It was still a national fuck up from the get go.

On one of the first successfully manned balloon flights, the passengers carried along a bottle of champagne to enjoy during the flight, but instead of actually drinking it, it was used as an offer of goodwill to the farmers whose field their balloon had landed in. The champagne convinced the farmers that the balloon was far from being a fierce dragon, and acted as an apology or peace offering for disturbing the land and animals grazing in the field.

That's actually a fairly long list. Trump's trade controls are still in place. The administration injected some fairly important measures to counter China in the absurd "inflation reduction" bill. That bill is trash and a domestic disaster, but that bill is *also* pretty bad for China (its provisions around electric vehicles and places/origins of components and manufacture). The CHIPS bill - also fairly bad legislation - is bad for China because it redoubled a lot of Trump's technology embargoes against the Chinese. There has been no effort whatsoever to modify prior restrictions or renegotiate the USMCA.

This administration is not passionately anti-CCP, but it isn't a CCP lapdog, either. The Biden family is owned. There are apparently, however, far too many people that are not owned or who have decided to play a slightly different game going forward.

China wants the US out of Asia and wants to supplant the US as superpower.

The method need not be war but there's a good chance of it. It's most likely when our militaries are near parity to each other, with each side thinking their position is advantageous enough to force the other to back down. It's not super likely at present unless the US views its military power as in permanent decline .

Yeah, I don't buy it. It's probably more pragmatic than what he's describing. Ukraine isn't "allowed" to go into Russia because they probably *can't* effectively do it and even if they can, they definitely can't do it without us and we don't want a NATO conflagration that will lead to WWIII. I don't think there's a grand conspiracy to confine everything to Ukraine, but there is a lot of pragmatic reason to do so and both sides of the conflict will try to keep that the status quo.

One of the very first things Biden did after taking office was to shutdown the State Department led investigation of Chinese spying in America that was started by Pompeo under Trump. No explanation was ever given and of course the media said nothing.

I have to disagree that this administration isn't cowed by China. 2. This also happens at amusement parks. If you ride a roller coaster, it's likely to trigger the "crash detection." A lot of parks have big placards up in ride lines and announcements reminding people to turn the feature off while on the ride (or while in the park) because there's tremendous false report volume from amusement parks.

You can disagree all you want, but it doesn't make it so. The administration is not in lock-step when it comes to the CCP. They have done some CCP-friendly things - primarily around easing off on espionage activity and, as a part of that, releasing Meng Wanzhou - the "Princess of Huawei" - back to the CCP for repatriation.

Pre-Trump, it was easy: the CCP got whatever it wanted. During Trump, it was easy: the CCP usually didn't get what it wanted. During Biden, it's far more complicated. He and his family are owned lock stock and barrel, but the government is fractured and factional and the CCP does *not* own all of the factions. The CCP gets some stuff it wants - espionage investigates and COVID origins, for example - but gets a whole lot it doesn't want - like on trade, manufacturing, high tech, etc. It isn't cookie-cutter, and on net it's anti-CCP.

Never that formal. The "One China Policy" came from what is now retrospectively called the "1992 Consensus" between the ROC and the PRC, where they agreed that China was China. The PRC interpretation of the Consensus is that there is one China and that one China is the PRC. The ROC interpretation of the Consensus is that there is one China but that doesn't mean there is only one government.

Both interpretations are used transactionally. This is where the "Chinese Taipei" stuff in the Olympics come from. The Taiwanese field their own teams, but those teams are culturally Chinese. See? "One" China. The government of Taiwan even sometimes denies that there ever was a consensus in 1992, and that asserting otherwise is supporting the "One China, Two Systems" fiction under which the CCP integrated Hong Kong and Macau and seeks to integrate Taiwan.

US guarantees regarding the independence of Taiwan basically say we're officially ok with Taiwan being integrated peacefully, but would fight if they were invaded. There's wiggle room there so if Taiwan is invaded, the US does not necessarily have to get involved.

It isn't that clear, and that is on purpose. The *assumption* is that the US would fight if the mainland invaded Taiwan. We have done nothing to dispel that assumption and done quite a bit to back up that assumption (military maneuvers, selling weapons systems to the non-state of Taiwan, etc.) but that position isn't formalized. That's the entire point of "strategic ambiguity" and so far it has worked in that the mainland hasn't invaded Taiwan.

I didn't say it was cookie cutter or that Biden and Team were doing things so over the top obvious that he had fully surrendered the country but it is beyond obvious that he is the weakest president we've ever had dealing with China at a time when China is threatening us to a greater degree than ever and it's a choice.

And no, I don't agree on net it's anti-CCP. The idea that we are giving them anything of value and doing basically nothing to stop them from looting our IP particularly in sensitive areas like AI is jeopardizing our security.

No, there's no proposed resolution process to the status of Taiwan nor is there an ongoing conflict.

It's a status quo for some decades and China is the more likely of the two powers to try to make advances in the region, as the US hasn't attempt to expand in Asia.

I entirely disagree. The weakest president on China was probably Obama. Bush was pretty damn weak, too - to the point that he might be tied with Obama.

The looting of IP is an ongoing problem and is not unique to Biden and is an area where the US has been weak for decades. That said, the Trump action to embargo next-generation chips and, crucially, chip design prowess and technology was a major blow from which Red China is still reeling. And that is one of the several things that the Biden administration has done nothing to change and has even amplified.

Biden's administration is definitely the most inconsistent. It is not anti-CCP enough for my tastes, and has no effective vision for China policy. It is also not a CCP creature. I suspect Biden himself is, but he isn't running things.

Maybe. That's possible. I sort of doubt it, though, and that will be even worse. I suspect it would like everything else this government does: disjointed and riddled with infighting as different factions - including pro-CCP factions - jockey for position and make the military pay the price for their games of internal empire.

In other words, my guess is that we *will* intervene, but do so in a big and stupid way that we don't maintain. We kill a lot of people and a lot of our people die while we make one strategic error after another that sends us packing while the greater Pacific region devolves into multi-party warfare and general chaos in what emerges as the greatest political, economic and military disaster in at least a century.

Happened about 1 am. We were asleep. There was a flash of light and then the house shook. I was out of bed in an instant with images of Second Junior's room having collapsed because of a car hitting the house, but all was well. Power was out, though. I had no idea what it was.

So, I used my phone to report the outage and tried to go back to sleep.

We heard trucks coming, though, and I couldn't just stay down, so I looked out the window and saw flashing lights. Went to another window and saw a couple of firetrucks and a police car. Well, that was weird, there must have been some kind of accident, but I couldn't see anything except some tire tracks going from my fence (untouched) towards the road.

Wake up this morning to find that the fire trucks are still there, there's a post of FB about the accident, and someone drove their car, drunk, into a house about 5 doors down from us.

We have power, though.

Well formally we're not neutral, we have kind of guaranteed Taiwan's independence against invasion. We've left ourselves an out and are very slowly distancing ourselves from the situation and Asia in general though. Going from supporting Taiwan as the official government of China to only guaranteeing independence is a step in the direction of neutrality but we never moved all the way to being a neutral party. We may be actually neutral in the event of a conflict or in a couple decades.

Ukraine we largely deny involvement in the prior stages of when we actually were very involved. So it's kind of inverted.
