Meet The PetMorons

From: Lurker Since Before Kaboom (LSBK)

I've shared pictures of Chief with the horde before. However, those pictures kept one physical attribute about Chief hidden (not on purpose). He was three legged, a tripod.
I was looking at adding another dog to the pack. I already had Mattie, my blue Australian Cattle Dog (ACD). I was looking on the Web at shelters and rescue organizations for another ACD. Well, very early in my search I came across Chief via a rescue organization in Colorado. Chief was from the high desert area of northern New Mexico and was currently being fostered in Durango, CO. When I inquired about Chief he still had all four legs - he just could not use his right front leg and it was damaged beyond any hope of using that leg again.

A little background about me, I've spent almost forty years in a wheelchair due to an automobile accident which resulted in me becoming a paraplegic. I have a house with no stairs so Chief was a perfect match to join the pack. I finalized the adoption of Chief and then he was scheduled to have surgery and have his leg amputated. The rescue organization paid for his surgery and his flight to my location/home.
Chief was an interesting dog. It was suspected that his injury was a result of a tango with a motor vehicle. He had some scars that the Veterinarians said look like road rash as a result of being run over. For about the first two years when he was with me, whenever we went for a walk if we encountered a white pick-up truck either driving by or parked Chief would lunge at the truck. He would only do that with white pick-up trucks. No other color or type of vehicle would set him off . He eventually out grew that behavior. I always suspected that his incident involved a white pick-up truck.

3 legs did not slow Chief down. In his youth he could pace me at 20mph while I was on an ATV. We went on ATV adventures in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. Also, when he was younger, Chief would chase rabbits with abandoned and at an amazing speed. He would be loudly moaning during the whole chase. I suspected that he lived on rabbits during his time in the high deserts of New Mexico. He soon learned that he did not have to work so hard for a good meal at my home!

Well, there came a time when he wasn't eating like he used to. Something was up. And then he started to have seizures. We went to the Vet and X-rays were ordered. The X-rays showed us 3 things about Chief. One, the vet was amazed that Chief could even use his rear legs. He had severe arthritis on his spinal column. Most likely an injury from his tango with the pick-up truck. Two, he had buck shot in him. The Vet suspected that the amputated leg probably had more buck-shot. Lord knows what Chief's life was like in the deserts of New Mexico. And lastly, the X-rays showed that Chief had wide spread cancer in his lungs and had more than likely spread to his brain - the reason for his seizures.

His remaining time with me was short. I made an arrangement with my Vet to come to my home when it was time. Chief had stopped eating for a couple days. HIs last night he had a bad seizure and the following morning he had another. It was time. I lost my red boy Chief on February 14th, 2015.
My heart was broken on that Valentines day. As time has passed when Valentines day comes around I always remember my red boy Chief and the good times we had together. If Chief could have "spoken human" you would've pulled up a chair and had a listen. Oh, the stories he could have told! He was a great dog and great friend.

Sorry I'm late with this amazing story. I will be remembering you on Valentine's Day this year.

Was a stray that followed my brother-in-law around in rural north Moorhead around 10 years ago.
My mother-in-law adopted him then. She decided that at age 93 should could no longer take care of him. He has been with us now since a week or so before Thanksgiving. Never a dull moment with Harley. He got the name Harley because he liked to sleep on my bro-in-laws Harley saddle in his shop. A very lucky and spoiled kitty.

Stormy grew up, departed the space race, trading-in her space suit for a grocery bag. Better. Talker.
Bella is our second Bella, because she is so darn beautiful. If you don't get that, call me and I'll explain. Capish? She is rescue Sheltie #7 from Jax Sheltie Rescue.
Bella's a formidable sheepdog force at 22 pounds and two years of age. She keeps an eye on things. Bell digs the beach and the seagulls, better than sheep!
Beer and Dogs (& some Cats) prove God loves us.

This is Elliott. He was picked up as a stray and taken to a shelter who in turn notified us. He's a sweet little dude with lots of health issues the worst of which is worms. He's around 10 years sold. Also has limited sight and hearing. He's a cuddle bug and I spent lots of time with him on Wednesday. His little nose reminds us of a Ewok! I wish we would have named him Ace!!

Prayers for Ghost
She's not able to see vet until Tuesday, getting weaker past two weeks for no apparent reason. Hope its thyroid.
Usually she wakes the dead barking at full moon. She still has spirit, but can't go up or down stairs or offer more than this

5 Daisy got loose today. I thought she was ready to walk in the door when she bolted left and went after several deer north-west of the house. I hate her running off and ignoring my calls, but it's hilarious to see the white tails as they scatter. Sad ending* to the story: Daisy came back so we still have a devoted if crazy and practically-feral Malinois. *hahhaha

I was sick with a cold (a rare happenstance) last Sunday. Daughter and hub came by with their two dogs, picked up Daisy, and went to the dog park, where they were met by SonM and his two dogs. A good time was allegedly had by all five family pooches.

On the way from the car to the park gate, Daisy slipped her collar but did not run off. Her skull is so narrow that you'd strangle her if you tighten the collar so it can't slip off. As long as she doesn't twist around, the collar will hold. Pet Science!

She used to get her wet food at noon (she has access to dry all the time), but has gradually trained me to give it to her earlier and earlier in the morning.

It wouldn't be a problem except that on weekends I like to get up at my usual time, make coffee, breakfast, etc. then go have a little nap before lunch. Yeah... good luck with that with a cat yowling that it's starving.

23 Our dogs expect to be put out at ~530, at which point I retreat to the living room with them to let spouse sleep, fed at 615, the younger pair retreat to moms bed but the elders have figured i can be bullied into a half hour walk. Which is good cause they're aging and so am I.

When you spent $10k and three months babysitting your 13yo back from coonhound paralysis you want to recoup your investment. He's basically a lower intestine on legs.

Weekend and my foot has healed so they'll all get five miles later if wife isn't otherwise committed otherwise the first two that get to the door.

Whether the little guys just don't want to compete or they just want to stay warm.

I'm a morning person (even on weekends), so I've trained them (or they've trained me) to get them their wet food at around 5:30 am. However, one can be a bit insistent and will jump all over me until I get out of bed sometimes.

Son did buy a harness for her, but haven't got in the habit of trying it yet. Good suggestion for next park run.

She had a harness shortly after we got her. Chewed it off in a matter of minutes. I think the new one's more durable.

Also have a shock collar but haven't used it yet. She's usually such a good dog, but there are definitely times a zap might be handy.

31 My six month old black kitten Julius has a little harness, with a long lead, for the back yard. He yowls to go out at the sliding door ("MEE-oww!) and when I lift him up and snap the harness on, sometimes he purrs with joy. I can clip the other end of the lead onto different "anchors" and let him explore. Of course he gets tangled sometimes, and I'm watching him of course, so I'm in and out a lot. Good exercise.

33 My Daughter took her Golden retriever to the vet because of a painful split toenail and they muzzled him... Never had one on before.. anyway the vet assistant was rough with his foot and he nipped at her.. No blood drawn.. Long story short the vet notified the local animal control and he is now on house arrest for 10 days.. This is a dog that wouldn't bite you for anything.. Lives with another dog, chickens, ducks and 2 cats... needless to say My daughter was furious and will no longer be going to that vet

I started taking my kittehs for walks when they were 14 weeks old and trained them to stay within a certain distance to me and not run off unless it's to the open garage. They are five years old now and listen as well as any dog. Well almost. 😀

39 Sigh. My old man dog is Cisco, a Beagle/Fox Hound mix who is 13. He's losing mobility. I built him a handicap ramp so he can get down from the deck, now some days he can't even make that. He's lost a lot of weight.

I made a dog wheelchair for him but he doesn't seem to like it much.

I think he's not got long.

57 Always love the funny parts of the pet post and the photos of the petmorons. But the story about Chief plucked at my heart. We've had a dog that went blind at 4 years old and had seizures. Most people expected us to have him put down. That was never gonna happen. He learned to use his brother as a guide and graced our lives for another seven years. We won't let a pet suffer for selfish reasons but we never give up on them.

My brother kitteh has no problem with a broom and me sweeping. He even allows me to playfully sweep him. But if I use a dust mop he hisses and raises his back and runs if I come anywhere near him. Weird kitteh.

He'll be going to the vet next week to get checked over and I hope they figure out why he stinks so bad. I had to keep covering my nose! lol!

69 Afternoon, folks! The topper pic with the Scottish Fold captures the human/cat relationship quite well. As does the 2 heroic cats vs. the vacuum cleaner. Stirling and Dagny both flee from mine -- though, oddly, they did not do that until fairly recently. They'd sit and watch warily as I used the machine, but not race away.

70 What a wonderful story about Chief! Goodness it brought tears to my eyes. We had a Shep's dog named Chief. He was one of the very first and was adopted by a volunteer. Still alive too if I recall correctly.

80 Big black Wolf cat would occasionally paw lightly at my scalp to get me up on a weekend. Not that I sleep *that* much later on Sat. & Sun. The current two don't bother me -- they usually have dry food out overnight. But Stirling the Great Black Kitten still trots in when he hears my alarm, leaps up to settle within the crook of my arm, and kneads and nuzzles. Just as he has done since he was small, 8 months ago. He's 11 months old today, and Dagny his "sister" is 10.5.

We have a few ferals. There's a high incidence of longish fur and bushy tails among the population. We've always wondered if big black Wolf cat spread some of his long-hair genes around when he was roaming outdoors before he got abandoned and I took him in.

There's a shorthaired gray who looks a lot like Harley, above, and who is clearly not feral. He recognizes me and will follow me to my door, where I obediently put out some Friskies dry food. He recognizes Miss Linda too. I keep telling her she should take him in.

This past September was 53 years I was Honorably discharged from the Army. Time sure flies, doesn't it? I was drafted in 1967 and those two years seemed to never end.

107 39 Sigh. My old man dog is Cisco, a Beagle/Fox Hound mix who is 13. He's losing mobility. I built him a handicap ramp so he can get down from the deck, now some days he can't even make that. He's lost a lot of weight.

How many dogs u got? My experience is that the one thing a dog needs is another compatible dog.

We took in a "crippled" Pomeranian supposedly with a spine problem from relatives and hanging around ours he gradually decided he wanted to be a dog again. Six weeks he was running around the yard.

He was just fat and had given up.

My cats used to follow me when I would walk our dogs. Eventually, they would only go so far and stopped following us. Because we walked a 2 mile circuit, the cats cut across country and met us with about a hundred yards from home. They were quite pleased with themselves.

Anyways, she dislikes turkey cat food, any brand, BUT if it's the Friskies turkey *with cheese*, she'll eat some of it (and then I put treats in it to entice her to finish). The Silmarillion is easier to understand than the average cat.
