Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Animals other than cats and dogs

Here at the Pet Thread, we often encounter animals other than the typical cats and dogs. Sometimes our cats and dogs do, too.

Meet The PetMorons

sangrriaa.jpg

This Is Sangria again, she was on the pet thread a few months ago, she's a Maine Coon kitten. She's close to 8 months now, and 24 inches from nose to back end, not including tail.

She has a very nice cat bed, you can see the edge of it under the box. She won't lay in the very nice cat bed unless there is a box in it first. We have no idea why....

Lirio100

Cats and boxes just go together . . . Lovely kitten. Big kitten.

This is Higgins and Trixie who blessed our lives the last 14 years since getting them from our local shelter. Even though they were adopted a year apart, they were life-long inseparable buddies. Trixie crossed the Rainbow Bridge in December of 2022 and Higgins crossed over last week. They taught me what real unconditional love is and I miss them so much. It always hurts but I didn't realize how much it would hurt. When I also cross that bridge, I know they are waiting for me.

I am a long time faithful lurker who has read you almost daily since around 2005. I appreciate all of your contributors and look forward every day to see whats going on in the Ace of Spades universe. Thank you again for your Pet Thread and keep up the great work!!!!

Dennis of NW Arkansas

It must have been especially hard to lose both of them in such a short time period. They look like they were great friends.

Lily and Pinky have been on the pet thread before but just wanted to send an update. Miss Pinky the Silky Terrier is 14 or 15 (not sure) and despite her assurances that she'll live forever (we go for two mile walks every morning, those deer won't chase themselves) I noticed some fatty tumors on her chest and kept hearing prolonged hacking at night, so those resulted in a vet visit. The biopsy showed the tumors were benign but the X-ray showed the beginnings of tracheal collapse and an enlarged heart - old age for a terrier. She's on meds for both at this point and doing better. The dog has traveled most of the US, been attacked by a pit bull and is generally unstoppable so I don't think this will slow her down much.

Miss Lily the Sheltie had floating kneecaps diagnosed last year, and after losing 15 lbs she's doing a million times better. I don't have to pick her up to go outside anymore, she's much more mobile and even more spoiled rotten. Her main job during the day is to keep my mobile video conferencing unit from flying off the ground, as you can see in the photo.

Love the pet thread as always!

Jerake75

What great dogs! Glad they are doing better.

This is a photo that Neo took of Gerard Van der Leun with Olive, the cat with whom he escaped the fire in Paradise. Neo's description is at the link.

Gerard was known to check in at AoSHQ from time to time. Gerard's brother is now caring for Olive and looking for a good forever home for her. Should not be a problem.

Sorry for everyone’s Lowe’s, it’s tough
I have 2 12 yr olds, one I’ve had since he was 11 months, Jack, , and Sophie, age 10 when I adopted her.

I lost my Lopan, Jacks buddy and mine, and he seemed so lonely, so I found Sophie, at the shelter, or she found us amd she is my lovely girl..

29 Retired Psciticene Phelbotomist has funny ways.
He named me "honey" after hearing me talk to another parrot. The first time I thought he was just being teasing to the other bird. phelbotomist had snuck out of his old cage and flew to me in the dark, thought he was calling the other bird saying "look who I'm with!" But he had just named me!
These days when he drinks water he will sweetly say "honey" after each sip.
If as and when he goes, I won't be far behind.

32 Afternoon, pet people! After a busy morning and a nap, I rise to see beautiful cats & dogs. And the opossum hanging out with cats. The late Wolf cat, during his outdoor phase, once encountered an opossum here. He eyed it; it eyed him; and both turned and went their separate ways. It was as if the marsupial was not really bothered by the big cat, and in his turn the cat thought o himself, "Nah. Not worth chasing, let alone eating."

36 So sorry to hear about Higgins and Trixie. I had 2 cats leave in close proximity, Wolf in mid-October '21 and then Chekov in March of '22 -- and the latter had been very ill since September of '21, so the whole double episode occupied close to 7 months.

Gerard's Olive looks something like my black Stirling, though she seems more short-haired than he does.

37 Speaking of cativersaries, 2 years ago today (1st Saturday in February), I adopted Prettygirl. Took her a few days to come out from hiding, and then several weeks for her not to pick fights with me from her cat perch, but now she's a snugglebunny and asleep on the couch.

39 Birthdays: Stirling's is next month, 3/11 (not confirmed, but we think that's right), and Dagny's on 3/26. Hard to believe they will be a year old already.

Stirling seems like an adult cat in size, though he is still quite playful. Dagny, unlike Sangria the Maine Coon, is not growing very much yet. Siberians, we're told, grow slowly. She's not spindly by any means, just not very big at present. Still doesn't really acknowledge the sound of her name, though she is not deaf and is quite bright and alert.

They both do sleep with me, off and on at night and frequently during my weekend naps.

Exactly. I wonder why they don't trigger the cat response to chase, kill, and enjoy. Possibly because they are just about cat-size -- not much like cats' usual prey. And possibly they don't smell right to the cats.

I've heard/read that possums don't pose a threat to cats most of the time. Possums are pretty chill. The one that comes around here doesn't even run away when I go out to see what it is up to. Just sort of shuffles off, turns and waits for his plate.

Since possums eat ticks, among other nasty shit, I can sorta' give this dude a kitchen pass.

Still have Scout, our squashy face black kitty. She'll be 18 this spring. She has dementia, but it otherwise in very good shape, still able to jump onto counters. She sometimes becomes agitated when we're not in the room, and we have to guide her to her food dish, but she's still a lovey-dovey.

Congrats on Beckoning Chasm's 1 year with Robert. I well remember the build-up and then acquisition. Can't believe it was a year ago already. Congrats to others on the anniversaries.

Daisy the mad Malinois continues to dominate our lives. Feed me! Walk me! Play with me! (She needs a puppy!) She still wakes me up at 7am sharp, usually. Let me rest until 7:15 today, though; that was nice.

Ony the yellow-eyed black cat continues to try to reassert her superiority and reclaim her home from this invading dog. Ony hisses and jumps out at Daisy, really ferocious-seeming. Daisy play-bows and barks and runs off, like, chase me! Sometimes Ony really will, for a short burst.

Yes, it is always hard even when you know it has to be done. A friend I know who arranges for feral cats to be fixed , feeds them and makes little houses with blankets inside and plastic around the doors to keep them warm in the winter, just had a hard time bringing a stray to be put to sleep and the cat had lived outside for nine years. It wasn't as if he was an indoor pet but she still loved him.

78 "Hard to wake up and have to deal with such a thing."

Linda thinks I don't miss the late white-and-black Chekov. I think of his positive (and negative!) traits every day; and I still have 2 of his pictures up over my desk. There is no possibility of my ever forgetting him, or any of my cats.

I don't think of them as "children," Fen, but as friends and roommates. Some are better friends and roommates than others, but that's the way it goes.

82 Aside from torpedoes also being called "fish" -- to a submariner, there are only two types of "fish" in the sea: submarines and targets.

83 I wasnt suggesting you thought of them as children, but as part of a family- like nieces or nephews or sisters and brothers, but roommates works just as well.

Sorry for your’s ,and everyone’s loss. It’s GODs way of keeping us humans on the straight and narrow so we can cross the Rainbow Bridge
