Biden's New Lie on Record Inflation: "It Was Already There When I Got Here, Man"

From Twitchy, the inflation rate month by month 2020 through 2022:

inflation20202022.jpg

And now he says he refuses any responsibility for it, because "it was already there when I got here, man."

And that's not just someone imitating Biden's White Trash Jester speaking style. That's what he said.

Biden's crowing about some hiring in January, but meanwhile, employers cut 102,000 jobs in January, and analysts say we're at the end of the period of natural hire-backs of people who were forcibly unemployed by the government during the pandemic.

As well as the short-term effects of wasteful and pointless rounds of stimulus after stimulus.

US employers cut 102,000 jobs in January - a 440% jump from the same time a year ago: 'Tech wreck' spurred layoffs as expert warns 'we're on the other side of the hiring frenzy of the pandemic years'

102,943 job cuts were announced in Jan 440% more than the same time last year

The technology sector made up 41% of the planned reductions during the month

Economy-wide layoffs were low, but more cuts are expected to be announced

More than 102,000 employees are set to lose their jobs after U.S. businesses announced some of the most brutal job cuts since 2020, new data found.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. made the report which found 102,943 job cuts in Jan - more than twice than those announced in December, and 440 percent more than the same time last year.

The technology sector has seen the most significant layoffs making up 41 percent of planned reductions - meanwhile retailers and financial companies will also see substantial changes.

Economy-wide layoffs were generally low, but more cuts are expected in the coming months.

More than 102,000 employees are set to lose their jobs after U.S. businesses announced some of the most brutal job cuts since 2020, new data found

PayPal Holdings Inc., Alphabet Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. have all made plans to dismiss thousands of workers and since Nov, technology firms as a whole committed to 110,793 job cuts.

Indeed, the whole tech sector is melting down.

Is this the end of the Tech Golden Age? Apple sales drop 5% in biggest quarterly decline since 2016, Alphabet misses Q4 estimates, Amazon reports almost no profit and Google Ad revenue falls

Alphabet, Amazon and Apple all posted disappointing results on Thursday

Leaders of all three tech firms blamed it on a financial squeeze for consumers

The strong dollar and lingering pandemic issues also hit revenues

Tech titans have been brought to their knees this week, as Alphabet, Apple, and Amazon all posted disappointing quarterly results.

Alphabet Inc on Thursday posted fourth-quarter profit and sales short of Wall Street expectations, as Google's advertising clients pulled back spending from a period of pandemic-led excess.

Executives of the search and advertising giant adopted a subdued tone on a call with investors, promising an extended period of belt-tightening, particularly on hiring, real estate costs and experimental projects that can take years to reach fruition.

That echoed comments from Mark Zuckerberg, the boss of Meta, who spoke the previous day about cost efficiencies, and from Apple's boss.

'We're recognizing the environment that we're in is tough,' said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.

'And so we're cutting costs. We're cutting hiring, we're being very prudent and deliberate on people that we hire.'

Shares of Apple and Amazon fell after they posted disappointing results on Thursday, wiping off gains after Facebook parent Meta on Wednesday boosted tech shares with news on cost cuts and a large buyback.

Gone was some of the exuberance of the pandemic when consumers flocked to the internet amid lockdowns and heightened interest in e-commerce and touchless deliveries.

Shares of Alphabet were down nearly 5 percent in after-hours trading, after losing about 40 percent of their value in 2022.

Private payroll growth slowed to 106,000 in January as weather hit hiring, ADP says
OR
Payrolls increased by 517,000 in January, crushing estimates, as unemployment rate hit 53-year low

That is an enormous gap over expectations! While the job market is red-hot, it's not great news in terms of taming inflation. There's always a double-edged sword with economic data these days.

The single edge of the sword giving workers the upper hand is he only one that matters. Wall Street is sad! Don’t fall for the wages are high and unemployment low is a bad thing propaganda. Other nations would kill for these kind of number and only 6% inflation?? Remarkable!

There's that 'infrastructure' bill which opens thousands of new jobs right now. Thanks to the remarkable negotiation skills of Democratic President Joe Biden and his Economic experts team! The alleged perpetrator — identified only as 23-year-old Sharaban K. — killed beauty blogger Khadidja O., also 23, in Ingolstadt, Germany last August, according to investigators.

Khadidja O. had been brutally stabbed more than 50 times, with her body left on the back seat of Sharaban K.’s Mercedes. Sharaban K. and an accomplice — identified as her boyfriend Sheqir K.— subsequently went into hiding.

When the body was found, police traced the car’s registration to Sharaban K.’s family. Given the corpse had been disfigured, investigators assumed that she was the victim.

A buddy of mine mentioned to me recently that the dinosaurs we typically think of as "land-based" such as the T Rex, stegosaurus, and triceratops were more likely semi-aquatic creatures like hippos. They'd swim in the shallow seas covering a large portion of the Earth at that time and only come on land once in a while (breeding? laying eggs?).

That's just speculation, like the "they were all covered with feathers" bit. I mean much of the skeletal construction of dinosaurs is guess work, since we've never found a complete skeleton, and the ones we found are distorted and mangled by pressure and time. Finding one whole bone is a treasure.

Then the rest? The musculature, skin, etc, mostly guesswork as well. Its very educated guesswork, but who the heck even knows what they looked like, exactly.

186 7 The "Inflation Reduction Act" is another trillion dollar money creation. The Junta thinks this is just what the country needs, more inflation.
Posted by: Huck Follywood
----------
Before the US passed beyond teh event horizon of government debt exceeding 100% of gdp, the question of whether the US would default or inflate its debt away was pondered by economists.

In most cases, absent large amounts of foreign debt, it is preferable politically (not economically) for a country to inflate its debt away rather than default formally and suffer a severe contraction of the economy to a sound basis. Even now, we are still at negative interest rates (interest rate received-inflation rate) so that every person loaning government money is effectively watching a portion (right now officially about 2 percent or so vanish as far as buying power). Unofficially using shadow statistics, it is more like 5-10 percent vanishing per annum.

Even at 6 percent inflation per annum, effectively the 31 trillion dollar debt's impact is halved after 12 years.

271 Every time the fed increases the interest rate, my SBA loan goes up. Coupled with retaining my clients when people start looking at what nice to haves to cut, it’s anxiety inducing. I have reduced my digital marketing spend because I have to make choices, too. I would prefer not to decrease advertising, but I also want to keep the lights on and my employees paid. I went in thinking 10% month over month growth would be very doable as we were coming out of Covid and people were ready to rejoin the world. It should have been. Until eggs went up to $7 a dozen. It’s hard to refinance to a fixed rate when you have been in business less than a year, even if your revenue is strong. I need a loan shark who will self fund. Actually, I need a loan guppy so the self funded interest rate is reasonable! 😂

It goes to show how unaccustomed the US is to real or serious war.

The US Civil War was relatively light on all of those things and the post-Civil War clemency was extremely extensive and basically unilateral. As wars go, it is harder to find one gentler.

I'm told that chickens will eat their own eggs if given a chance, and one they start doing it, you have to kill them all and start afresh if you ever want eggs again.

Which is why people who feed eggshells back to the chickens grind them up fine so that they aren't recognizeable as eggshells.

And again, I'll note we have nullification as a current state of affairs both in immigration law and drug law. The federal bureaucracy is a creation from much later.

Well from the moment of secession you have war or a series of wars in the future. The slavery issue could have theoretically been resolved without comprising the wealth and status of southern elites, but that's kind of 20/20 hindsight operating with information they didn't have.

WWI or something like it was going to happen without the key figures maintaining the prior delicate balance. Avoiding war in Europe for such a long period was a difficult feat.

Ukraine by comparison is just a clusterfuck created by poor diplomacy and competing factions.

Usually what happens is a chicken breaks the egg and then is totally amenable with feeding on it like anything else etc. Essentially, chickens are scavengers and the pecking order is a real thing where like in Galaxy Quest, a poor limping wounded little critter can get viciously attacked and killed in enforcing the pecking order. There is a reason that commercial operations debeak their chickens.

337 Yesterday I was in line at checkout at Wally World and the woman ahead of me had a fairly full cart. It tallied $491. She looked at mine and said she wished she had it (just a few items). She continued to explain, "I'm taking care of seven grandchildren." Just think about that, spending five Benjamins on a cartload of food. How long can this go on?

Posted by: Ruthless at February 03, 2023 03:43 PM

Until it can't. Once that happens it will get ugly and people will get hurt and then maybe, just maybe, things can get back to what they should be.

One thing is for certain, it won't get back to normal while the federal government spends twice as much money as they bring in every year.

I think those essential points were all in Michael Crichton's novel. Though there is very little in the film that was unchanged from the book, except that long sequence with the T. rex in the rain.

351 RTS,

I disagree. Essentially, it is because neither the North or the South after agitation for about 20 years could come up with an amenable plan to end slavery. Brazil did and it had far greater proportion of slaves than the US did. It would have required the federal government to buy off the slaves which the North simply would not have it done.

On the South's part, it would have required a massive restructuring of their polities which the planter elites simply were not willing to do.

WWI was similar--the earlier crises of Algeria, the Balkan wars of 1913, and so on did not result in wider wars despite the interlocking treaties. But, Russia felt obligated to go to bat for the Serbs who were in the wrong due to ethnic not strategic reasons and that started teh whole ball of wax. It still could have been contained if Germany did not mobilize to support Austria Hungary. But they did simply to end France as a threat and their key strategic plan via von Schiefflen demanded violation of Belgium territory. Had the Germans not invaded Belgium, then England might or might not have entered the war at its onset similarly to Italy.

352 OT - Since my son told me it's National Carrot Cake day, I have one in my oven. No walnuts (I can't have them) and no raisins (spouse hates them), but carrots, fuji apples, and pineapple juice should work. I'm doing a vanilla maple frosting for my piece (yep, with the amount of fruit and veg I threw in this, I can feel not guilty having a small piece) while the daughter is making a cream cheese frosting...we'll frost by the piece, so my fridge only needs to hold a small tupperware of frosting and not a whole cake...

If a dozen = $5.00, that's about $1.66 a day. But it mounts up to $50 in a month.

I've cut back my breakfast egg consumption to 3-4 a week, and doing cheese and ham on toast the other days.

It was not a technical impossibility but I think a practical one. The sharecropping system that followed demonstrated that things would've been much less disruptive than anticipated. In the general the ends of serfdom or slavery in regions where they were widely employed was usually accompanied by conflicts, so a solution was non-trivial.

Europe was kept at peace by a few key individuals who could navigate their systems and interests. While technically navigable, since these people had been doing so, they weren't replaced with correspondingly talented individuals. A system that very few can maintain is one guaranteed to eventual failure.
