Daily Tech News 3 February 2023

Top Story

  • First time as tragedy, second time as farce, third time as an episode of Seinfeld: There's a Chinese spy balloon drifting over Montana. (ABC News - no, the other one)

The Pentagon is tracking it but not taking any action due to the risks involved.

    Of shooting down a balloon.

    Over Montana.

Tech News

  • AMD's 128 core Bergamo CPUs have been confirmed for launch in the first half of this year. (WCCFTech)

That's one of three expected server CPU launches from AMD this year: Bergamo with 128 cores, Genoa-X with 96 cores but over 1GB of cache, and Siena, a smaller, cheaper version of Epyc that will nonetheless still offer more cores than not only Intel's latest Sapphire Rapids chips but also Intel's next-generation Emerald Rapids.

  • Twitter is cancelling free access to its API and replacing it with a "basic paid tier". (The Verge)

Details are somewhere between sketchy and non-existent at the moment except for the date - February 9th.

I suspect the focus here is not so much on revenue as on bots. Twitter is just awash in bots, and has been for years.

I'm not saying the stupid posts you see coming from Twitter are all fake though. Sorry if I got your hopes up. No, people really are that stupid and the world will end in flames pretty soon.

25 Up early. I've been drinking that A2 milk from Braum's for over a year. I was out of milk yesterday and just picked up some regular stuff, and it really disagreed with me. Better now. I hope that chink balloon loses altitude and somebody with a Cessna, a Garand, and a dream just riddles the hell out of it.

30 This morning's episode of The Restless Gun is something of a comedy, which I've noted John Payne, the star, was good at. Unlike a lot of the half-hour Westerns of the '50s, RG was not afraid to have some humor. Payne's character, Vint Bonner, encounters 2 little old ladies who are vegetarians -- they serve him what he thinks is beef until they tell him it's a "rutabaga burger" (!). There seems to be some story about keeping a calf safe from being turned into veal.

32 Different time, different type of balloon. In WW1, the French bought a quantity of 1895 Winchesters in Teddy Roosevelt's favorite caliber, .405, for balloon busting. They probably worked as good as anything else at the time, the pre machine gun days of the air war.

43 Reading about the German dirigibles flying to England and dropping bombs on London. They flew to high for the fighters at that time to reach them. But technology soon solved the problem with ammunition that could reach them and with the hydrogen in the cells, blow them up. It took balls to not only fly in a dirigible, but to fly up and shot them down. There is a movie probably on UT that is quite good.

Step 3. Is the cake covered?

If anything there is a "balloon falling out of the sky" tax. Multiple of them. The owner of the balloon owes tax to the State, school district and township. The property owner the balloon lands on also owes a use tax to the state, school, and township, plus has to pay the state to evaluate environmental damages.

The ban comes after several environmental organizations showed concern about how trashed balloon litter negatively impacts Laguna Beach's ocean and open spaces.

Some 10 year old probably found a balloon on a section of beach and then extrapolated 1,000,000 balloon remnants along the California coastline. But children are our future dontcha know?

Posted by: Divide by Zero at February 03, 2023 07:22 AM (enJYY)

166 "Real" weather balloons called radiosondes are launched from various locations in the US daily. They measure the temperature, dew point, barometric pressure and wind speed up to 45 - 50K feet. They then fall back to earth as the balloon part basically breaks up at that altitude. You seldom hear about "debris" from those.

So, I presume the instrumentation on the ChiCom's spy balloon must be significant. Might be worth examining intact.

Well, he did say that more than half of his women were women.

196 yeah, I had no idea if FM2+ was unique, indeed it is. Think I got the right one, went through the big list ... bought it used for $58, hoping it speeds up going through trail cam photos. Due for a new computer, but not yet.

I suspect these politicians get together at some sort of annual convention and swap stories about legislation:

"Ban balloons? That's hysterical. Send me a copy of the law when it gets written."

The 6700 is a better chip, if you couple it with a 6670 you'll get better graphics.

Posted by: sven at February 03, 2023 07:55 AM (Lzpvj)

204 thx ... can get that for $20, chip should arrive today. I used CPU-Z program to identify my hardware ... says socket FM2 (904) .. but just looked at the motherboard and it says FM2+ CPU. not sure what to make of that. Guess I'll find out.

CBD,

Salt Lick is an Austin classic. I haven't been there in years but there giant Flintstone sized, smear your face with sauce BBQ'd beef ribs were unbeatable. If they ain't been COVIDized and Biden-sized.

Franklin's is the fair-haired child of Austin. Great baseline BBQ. But, you'll probably have to tolerate a line. A long line. However, work day and cold temps may have eliminated that today.

It may wind up being an issue, I ran into similar problems when I built my son's first two systems.

If the chip will not fit then you need to find an A-10 78 series or an Athlon processor.

I hope it works out for you.

Also an easy upgrade to remember is the ram speed and latency factor in heavily to your graphical performance.

DDR3 1866 seems to be the sweet spot, the gains from 2000 or 2400 ram seem small.

207 BREAKING NEWS!!!

Agents for the FBI and DOJ have discovered that the Chinese gov't has brought across the southern US border and planted in 15 major American cities -

at least 20 hydrogen bombs.

The FBI and DOJ are keeping a close watch on the bombs in case they try to do anything dangerous.

The bombs will remain in place as their removal and transport would violate current US environmental law.

Nanzi Pelousy stated: "Look I know this looks bad but Xi in his benevolent wisdom has given the detonation codes to Al Sharpton and Antifa," continuing. "This will allow the establishment of a new equilibrium and is in no way indicative that the American government has ceded sovereignty to a foreign power that is just crazy talk....now where is my husband?"

209 thx again sven, I can return the chip. This computer serves the purpose, and such a hassle to switch to new computer ... But might just splurge (before they destroy our currency anyway).

My ram says DDR3 2600+, and I have 12GB, so should be OK on that front.

Like I used to do when with ARs I sometimes post "build cost" breakdowns.

If you were happy with the APU from that gen and are not a huge gamer you can build a system for around 350 bucks that will blow the old FM-2s doors off.

The Ryzen 5 4600g is around 75 bucks now.

213 yeah ... sounds good, I'm not a gamer.

looked up the motherboard it says it can handle FM2+ and FM2, so should be OK. Went ahead and ordered that 6670 for $20. Should get 310% better performance from the little chart I saw. Thanks for mentioning that.
