Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | BuzzFeed Admits That Its Writers Are NPC Robots, Hires AI Program to Generate ContentLegal Insurrection readers may recall that I reported on ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer), a chatbot launched by OpenAI this past November. The New York Times hailed it as "the best artificial intelligence chatbot ever released to the general public." I also noted that the chatbot passed a Wharton Business School test as well as the US Medical Licensing exam . . . it is that good. Now comes news that another program from OpenAI will be used to create content for the digital media and entertainment site BuzzFeed. BuzzFeed Inc. said it would rely on ChatGPT creator OpenAI to enhance its quizzes and personalize some content for its audiences, becoming the latest digital publisher to embrace artificial intelligence. In a memo to staff sent Thursday morning, which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Chief Executive Jonah Peretti said he intends for AI to play a larger role in the company's editorial and business operations this year. For the moment, AI will be used to generate "personalized" results for Buzzfeed's idiotic quizzes, but the company has posted a quiz that was created by the Chatbot, and plans to use the Chatbot to write BuzzFeed content -- taking cues from humans (or NPCs), who will provide its "prompts," or idea seeds. Legal Insurrection notes that BuzzFeed's stock value increased on the news. I'm just going to post links all day. I had very bad sleep last night and can't get my brain together. Maybe I'll try getting the chatbot to write some posts for me. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I've looked at the samples on ChatGPT's website. They are "good enough" but I'd hardly call them "great."
If they are able to fool a normal human, that doesn't reflect too well on the human's ability to judge the quality and style of content. To me, there is a distinct lack of "humanness" to the responses I've seen generated so far. Sort of like an Uncanny Valley for reading. You can tell that it's trying to mimic human writing, but doesn't fully understand it. J.J. posted a link to an article in the MR where the author attempted to get ChatGPT to answer for/against questions with a non-liberal bias and got nowhere. Google isn't smart enough to distinguish between valuable, accurate content and garbage spewed out by an NPC. This is why a company that can afford to hire a team of freelancers to churn out garbage content for their page outranks a site with focused, relevant information. Back in the Before Times of 2018, Reuters announced the use of AI in the newsroom. Not to write the articles, but to do story selection:
The system will churn through massive datasets, looking for anything interesting: a fast moving stock price, intriguing changes in a market, or subtler patterns. Journalists are handed that information however they choose — in an email, messenger service, or via their data terminals when they sit down for a shift — alongside key context and background to help jumpstart their research if they think the story is worth pursuing. They could just feed the output into ChatGPT so it can write the article, and remove humans from reporting entirely. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 31, 2023 01:28 PM (t0OGg) 82

I saw a list of "30 Best Small Towns In America" that included Welch, WV. Having worked for awhile not too far from Welch, and knowing exactly what Welch truly is, it was obvious that someone or something had merely scraped the internet for pictures of small towns and then shat out some content for each one. Welch does have one scenic block next to a small river, which you can see if you turn your back to the open air drug market, burned out houses, and overrun government businesses. No one in their right minds would ever drive through there, let alone sing its praises. Anyway, cool story bro. This is what clued me in to how content farms like BuzzFeed do business. ChatGPT, write a short story in the style of Ernest Hemingway about an astronaut.
------- The astronaut floated alone in the void of space. He looked down at the blue marble of Earth, so far away. He thought of home and all he had left behind. He was on a mission to touch the face of the moon, to walk on its surface and plant the flag of his country. He was the first and he would not be the last. But now, he was lost. The engines of his spacecraft had failed and he was adrift, carried further and further from his goal. He felt a sense of sadness and regret. He thought of his wife and children, waiting for him to return. He remembered his training, the countless hours of preparation and the countless simulations. He focused on his breathing and the sound of his heartbeat. He would not give up. He would find a way back to Earth, or he would die trying. He was the first dog in space and he had proven himself a valuable member of the crew. The dog barked and licked the astronaut's face, bringing him back to the present. The astronaut smiled and stroked the dog's fur, grateful for his company. He talked to the dog, telling him of their mission and their adventures together. The dog listened intently, his eyes fixed on the astronaut's face. He seemed to understand every word, and he offered comfort and support with his presence. ---- The astronaut floated alone in the void of space, accompanied only by his loyal companion, the dog. But as they drifted further from home, they began to sense they were not alone. A strange presence seemed to lurk in the shadows, and the dog barked and growled at nothing in particular. The astronaut's heart raced as he searched for the source of the disturbance. And then, he saw it. A children's doll, floating aimlessly in the darkness. It was a creepy, lifeless thing, with glassy eyes and a sinister grin. The astronaut tried to ignore the doll and focus on his mission, but the doll seemed to follow him, taunting him with its gaze. He tried to shoo it away, but it always returned, closer and closer. The dog barked and snarled at the doll, but it paid no attention. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, watching some Best Pictures at January 31, 2023 01:56 PM (LvTSG) 271

Yes, but there's a wrinkle. You can ask it to regenerate the response a couple dozen times and it will do re-writes each time. So if you do that, plus put some things in your own words (AKA the encyclopedia Britannica method), plus add in a colorful fact or anecdote, you're golden. I can see this thing replacing call centers in the very near future. It seems especially suited since all the meat-puppets read from a checklist anyways.

The unilever-owned American Mayo brand, Hellmann's, is pulling back from the South African market due to low demand on top of "highly inflationary import costs." Starting today, the creamy mayo is being discontinued in South African markets and will no long be seen on store shelves online. However, it'll still be available in the United States. ---- No need for panic buying in the USA. Heh. Well, it's funny that the first "profession" getting replaced by AI is journalisming.
But this trend needs to stop. We are headed even faster to being nothing but non-thinking consumers. This will not end well. Posted by: Tex Lovera at January 31, 2023 02:25 PM (wtvvX) 463
WaPo: BroFo's ouster from the House Foreign Relations Committee is rooted in Islamophobia.
The Washington Post@washingtonpost Analysis: Omar faces potential ouster from the House Foreign Relations Committee, a punishment that is inextricable from her religion. Had she not been a practicing Muslim who’d triggered right-wing opprobrium from day one? This moment would be different. There was an "interesting" Buzzfeed episode where the Hosts all took a testosterone test...all four squeeed when they found their T-Levels were soooo low that many had less than the average for 90yo's, less than 1/2 of their age appropriate norms.
