Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | DOJ To File Lawsuit Against Google, Alleging Unfair (Monopoly) Dominance Over Online Advertising MarketOh look who just woke the f*ck up. What, isn't Google censoring what you want censored lately? What accounts for this sudden interest in a functioning marketplace free of monopolies? There is an answer coming up.he Biden Administration's Department of Justice (DOJ) is preparing to file an antitrust lawsuit against Google, alleging that the company has an unfair dominance over the digital ad market. As reported by the New York Post, the federal lawsuit could be filed as soon as Tuesday against Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc. The suit will target Google's lucrative advertising business, which accounts for 80 percent of Google's overall revenue; in 2023, Google is projected to make at least $73.8 billion from advertising alone. The revenue is generated primarily by connecting advertisers to newspapers, websites, and other outlets that may be willing to host them. However, some publishers have since complained that there is not enough transparency about where the money generated by advertisements ultimately goes, in terms of how much goes to Google and how much goes to the publishers themselves. So there you go: Biden's DOJ is only suing because his media allies are complaining that Google's monopoly position gives it the power to set terms for advertising on their platforms, without telling them how much Google is making. As far as Google's monopoly status hurting independent, non-legacy-media creators and all businesses looking to advertise: the hell with them. The only thing that matters is that Biden's media allies think they should be making more money and have told their pet government to go bark some money out of Google for them. So because this is only about paying off Biden's media allies, that's all it will take to make the action go away: Google will maintain its monopoly position by agreeing to pay Biden's media allies a better cut of the ad revenue. The suit will claim, if CNBC can be believed, that Google charges 37 % of every ad dollar (or more) to connect advertisers to publishers online. Middle-men in non-monopoly positions apparently make less.
I hope this suit succeeds, and the next target ought to be Apple's Ap Store which is an out-and-proud monopoly, though charging a bit less. Posted by: Huck Follywood at January 24, 2023 04:38 PM (sPFn3) 45
Actually, I think it is well known now that Google's search business is deteriorating as the results are not nearly as good as they were.
I remember during Tea Party days there was a major demonstration planned for Washington, and Google suppressed any mention of it in search results. A Proof of Concept exercise, as it were. It showed that they could do it, and get away with it. This was at about the same time that Google hired Al Gore to figure out how to better censor results related to global warming. Bing and Google now come up with exact same 20 or so moderated results for any search... and then repeat them page after page. We no longer have search engines, we have Moderated Advertising.
Yeah. Google got its start by being the best search engine, their system gave you want you wanted, and was great at guessing what you meant by what you said. There were some good search engines in the past like Alta Vista, but Google blew them away. Then at some point around 2016 or so they decided it was their job not to serve the customer by providing the most accurate and useful results, but curate what the customer got by carefully shaping what they got. ++++ Big Tech is at least as useful as Big Media, so I suspect there is more to it than this. They want something from Google that they're not getting. 5 So there you go: Biden's DOJ is only suing because his media allies are complaining that Google's monopoly position gives it the power to set terms for advertising on their platforms, without telling them how much Google is making.

Posted by: Dr. Bone at January 24, 2023 05:17 PM (Jg7EG) Yes and no. You can't have kids that way, so it defeats the whole reproduction side of nuptials but...it is sex, so it satisfies that requirement. It's not much fun, though. I have no idea what I am eating. I cooked it but I don't know what it is. Had some ground beef I needed to use, some canned diced potatoes that I don't usually use, some canned mushrooms and some leftover beef stock. Threw all of it in a skillet with salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and a bit of butter. Now I have a tasty one dish meal and I have no idea what it would be called.

I like Prince too, but too many people just go crazy talking about him. He was ridiculously talented though.
Posted by: JoeF. ------- Prince was talented enough to do what he wanted to do as a songwriter and musician. Probably most of that type would agree with Pete Townshend when someone asked him about Richie Blackmore being more talented as a guitarist. I think Pete said he used music and songwriting as his voice rather than worry about being the uber guitarist. The smart ones in the game play to their strengths instead of trying to do everything. Yeah that is the one legitimate criticism of Prince, beyond his voice. It was like Mozart writing only sappy montovani stuff for elevators.
