I got boxes at the liquor store when moving all my albums. Didn't have enough crates for the whole collection. Probably 5 or 6 hundred records.

Happy Thursday, though!

15 Speaking of suck, a TV adaptation of Roger Zelazny's The Chronicles of Amber is under way... With Stephen Colbert named as the series producer. (Variety)

Yeah, this is going to be bad.

I guess Walmart was out of chimps, and Colbert was the best they could do. Sigh.

Great series of books, at least up to Book 8 or so, where he kinda lost the thread.

And Zelazny's Lord Of Light should have been made into a movie eons ago.

Howdy, y'all.

16 Though not LPs I've been going through my cassette tape collection. Most are getting thrown out. The ones I want to keep I check first. It's been a trip down memory lane. I'm surprised how many of them still work and that my tape player on my old mini system still works. Not sure what I'll do if the mini system dies. Hard to find them with CD and Tape players anymore.

22 One of my ex-gfs had a firebird with a loose and worn out ignition switch that most of the time wouldn't turn. So one day after trying to start the engine to no avail, I squirted some powdered graphite lubricant into to smooth out the action of the switch. Viola! It smoothed out the switch and did exactly what it is marketed to do, - except that I should have considered that graphite is highly conductive. You could start the vehicle but it wouldn't turn off. You could even remove the key but it kept running. I learned that the only way turn of the engine was to disconnect the battery.

Car jackers take heed.

23 When XH and I split (in the 80s)-- he got the tapes, I got the LPs.

He was active duty, so wouldn't have room for albums in the barracks. Small victory for me...the LPs had only been played a couple of times: once to check for flaws, once or twice to create tapes. Most are still pristine.

I haven't had a tape player at home in years. My '03 Buick Park Avenue had both a CD player and a cassette player, and I'd go back and forth with them. All the cars since, Buick Regal, BMW 3 Series, and now the Buick LaCrosse, have had CD players and a USB port so you can play stuff from a flash drive.

Still I have a couple stacks of cassettes. I need to look them over and see if there are any I want to keep, should I ever buy a player again.

35 Dr. Bone, the reason I asked about model year range is: the Alpha Tech ignition lock. Known to break at the "tailpiece" which is that end of the lock that engages the actual switch, down inside the steering column. Once broken, one cannot either start or shut down the engine, except 'happenstance' (ya got lucky and the broken pieces mated correctly, just long enough to actuate that mechanical switch in the column)

90 An American fashion designer who spent 16 years in Shanghai published an essay in the New York Times highlighting the virtues of raising her children under the watchful and authoritarian eye of the Chinese government. Heather Kaye (main) arrived in Shanghai in 2006 with her husband George and a plan to stay for a year, but ended up raising her two daughters (below) there. In 2022 her family was driven to return to the US, having lived for two years under the country's draconian COVID-19 policies. Nonetheless, she described her return to Washington DC as a 'culture shock' that made her miss that her children were no longer being 'co-parented by the Chinese government.'

Just about every single mother and welfare mother have these same thoughts.

That's what I don't understand about all this. I was a National Merit Scholarship winner - way back in '90. They DID contact you directly back then, via mail. They also sent you a big book with all the corporate sponsorships. If one of your parents worked at one of those places - you pretty much got a golden ticket. I, alas, did not. But I still got $2500 bucks in tuition my first year - which my school graciously gave me in cash.

That is why it takes so long for him to respond. Also, it takes a while for the data to get that far around the world.

I got bad news. Most of the people around you, when you really scratch the paint and see what's underneath, have absolutely no regard for individual liberty or diversity of thought. Most people ARE nazis, for lack of a better word. The fun starts when you get two or more of them together with differences of opinion regarding what that should look like. Then you get contemporary politics.

See me at 208. It crosses all boundaries; age, sex, race, religion, economic status, and political affiliation. Most people, when you really dig deep, are pretty damned authoritarian. It just so happens - get this - that their ideal authoritarian government happily coincides, to the letter, with their own personal beliefs. Such that the perfect authoritarian government doesn't intrude on their own personal desires, and conveniently makes everyone else conform to the same.

Neat, ain't it ?

Yeah, I saw that. The sad part is, most West Virginians will never know about it. I'd have to think they'd be none too pleased with that blockhead. Even though people can see it in their daily lives, in simple things like their HOA or HR at work, most just won't grasp the consequences of that human tendency to exert overwhelming control as applied on a government scale. And worse yet, they feel a need to shout down anyone that does see it.

Posted by: Chatterbox Mouse at January 19, 2023 06:05 AM (TXFi7)

That's not your hearing. Or at least, it's not just your hearing. That's the way the sound is mixed in modern movies. Also, actors are allowed to slur their words and say lines under their breath, in an effort to add verisimilitude.

This is a really common complaint, but in the end it probably doesn't really matter that much. Contemporary movies are made with non-English-speaking audiences in mind, so the dialog rarely matters that much.
