The Dumbest Man in DC Wants to Retrain Cops to Shoot Armed and Dangeous Felons in the Leg or Shoulder
Joe Biden says that when cops are confronted with a violent criminal using deadly force against them, they should just go for winging shots or just shoot the guns out of the Bad Guys' hands.

While giving a speech at the National Action Network's Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast in Washington, the "leader" of the free world decided to weigh in on your local police force should be handling situations where a firearm is necessary. "We have to retrain cops," said Biden. "Why should you always shoot with deadly force? The fact is if you need to use your weapon, you don't have to do that."Video below. In the world inhabited by the non-mentally-demented, 2022 was a year in which law enforcement saw an increase in fatalities inflicted on them by criminals, thanks to the wave of chaos and murder unleashed on the country by the Democrat Party.
Fraternal Order of Police National Vice President Joe Gamaldi sounded the alarm on a growing number of law enforcement fatalities in 2022 Sunday on "Fox News Live." Firearms-related fatalities claimed the lives of 64 police officers in 2022, contributing to a roughly 21% increase from the average of 53 per year from 2010-2020, according to data from the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund (NLEOMF). "It's absolutely horrible. Unfortunately, the war on cops in 2022 just continued to march on. We had 331 police officers shot. That's a 13% increase since 2019. We had nearly 90 ambush attacks and 64 of those officers lost their lives," Gamaldi said.
Firearms-related fatalities have claimed the lives of 64 officers in 2022. "And that comes on the heels of 2021, which was the deadliest year for law enforcement and intentional homicides in over two decades. Now, you combine that with what we're seeing nationwide, where we've had over 20,000 homicides for two years in a row. We haven't seen that since the 1990s." Gamaldi told host Bill Melugin he believes there are five reasons why more police officers have been killed in the past year, saying a "culture of lawlessness" has gripped the country. He argued more deaths were caused by "an open border, rogue DAs, activist judges, a revolving door criminal justice system, and generally a society that tells people you're no longer accountable for your own actions." "So the leaders in this country, from the White House on down, need to understand that we're fighting for the very soul of our nation right now and we're losing. And that's why we see chaos and disorder everywhere we look. And we just can't go on like this," Gamaldi continued. Melugin asked what other reasons could be behind the increase in fatalities besides a growing anti-police movement. "We in law enforcement have been treated like crap for the better part of a decade. We've been demonized, we've been denigrated, and people just have less and less respect for law enforcement. But they also know that they're not going to be held accountable for their actions," Gamaldi responded. Both Democratic lawmakers and members of the media have pushed the movement to defund police.

If a murdered that isn't a cop, starts murdering children, cops will stand outside and wait as those children are all murdered. Only when the cop is sure that the murderer is out of ammunition and is done murdering children will the cop then go in and shoot the murder, if the murdered hasn't already killed themself.

The idea that a policeman can be retrained to shoot for non-lethal areas on a bad guy's body is stupid even for Sponge-Brain Biden.
Add a drop of adrenaline, even at a range, and hitting the target becomes a challenge. Add a target that shoots back?
No cop in his right mind would bother with anything other lots of rounds fired at center-of-mass, no matter how many regulations say that is the preferred target.

Depends on the department, as the rot starts at the top. Amply illustrated in the shooting in Broward County where the deputies all gathered around outside. But the cops who arrived subsequently and who weren't part of the Sheriff's Office ignored the deputies standing around outside and went straight in. The difference was who was running the departments in question.
There have been plenty of instances in which the cops did as they ought to have done in such cases and did their best to promptly deal with the shooter. The reason why we remember Uvalde is because it was an outlier.

I had this debate even with my conservative wife, they just don't get it.
But it reminds me of the whole "yes we need more female firemen!!!" when the reality is, these same women wouldn't want to be rescued in a burning building by a purple-haired woke woman firefighter that can barely even carry a fire hose, much less carry them out of there.
Something tells me if someone was trying to rape/kill them, they'd want a guy that's interested in using lethal force to save them and not someone that "wings" them.

Well, given that you and your ilk have reinforced the idea in every black person's head that the police are out to kill them, it creates a lot of needless fight or flight situations which used to devolve into what people would call police brutality, even when it was just use of nonlethal force. Since "police brutality" is not acceptable and brings all kinds of legal problems, lethal force becomes a less problematic approach.
Oh, and shooting in the leg can be pretty lethal given that there are major arteries there and the blood loss from one of those can be severe.

The arms, legs, and head are mobile and much harder to hit and in football, you are trained to hit and tackle the parts that are not movable such as the pelvis and central torso. Use of force is supposed to be proportional for police. So, the police cannot shoot a fleeing property burglar without evidence that he is a violent criminal (Tennessee v. Garner).
A known reputation as being a violent fleeing felon or demonstrating the ability to hurt the police with a deadly or incapacitating weapon such as a knife, Taser, firearm, axe, 2x4 or so on can be met with deadly force if the range that the perp has is close enough to the police to have the opportunity to harm them.

Tueller drill is what it is called. Basically it relies on action beats reaction. Take roughly 1.5-2 seconds to draw a firearm, a bit less if the firearm is at low ready. In the 1.5-2 seconds, a perp even obese can reach a police officer with an edged weapon and a lot of soft body armor is not designed to prevent knife wounds but would stop a slug from a pistol.
IRL, keep your distance from any suspected ill doer even if carrying. Avoidance and distance is your friend.

The pension programs are generous, and the Union is very powerful. Sure, some cops might get the bad luck of the draw, and be selected as a sacrificial victim for another Democrat coalition group like BLM. BUT, most will go through the motions for decades in a zero accountability environment, and then cash out. You can be a lazy cop, or a crooked cop, or a psycho cop, doesn't much matter.
Trying those behaviors in a different environment would be disastrous for the bad cops, so they stay where they're wanted/encouraged.

You are correct. The doj is in possession of every second of video from Jan 6th and has classified it. I seriously doubt the speaker of the house is going to get them to release any of that footage and I doubt the Capitol Police have backup copies of the video.

Probably. We also do it wrong. The system should be recast as assumed risk and then you just insure you and yours. I can carry insurance or not. It pays *me.* Someone wrecks my car? Sucks for me. My insurance covers me. I get injured in a wreck? Sucks for me. My insurance covers me.
One of the reasons - there are many - that auto insurance is so expensive is that you have to carry it for a bad case scenario for an unknown harmed party. If you have assets, this means you have to carry even more insurance. Having to carry $250k or more in insurance is necessary for a whole lot of people, even if they only drive a $20k car. A lot of that is medical, but the property damage liability is huge, too, because you don't know what the other guy is driving prior to the accident.
The whole system is almost designed to be expensive. Just shift the whole damn mess to assumed risk and carry the level of insurance you need for yourself.

But even if they didn't I sure as shit wouldn't be without it, when some fender bender happens and some fine upstanding citizen gets out the car with their neck brace and the law firm of Dewey Cheatam and Howe come calling , not to mention the cost of vehicles. I was hit by a complete loser with no insurance. My company covered the damage to my truck, I was out my deductible and that was it. I was told I could go after the guy but my time required and the long shot to recover from this POS was not worth it.

In LAPD, a female street cop was shot in the heart by a 357 magnum while pursuing a suspect. She lived and got the creep that shot her.
An instant stop usually requires either someone that will stop what they are doing if they are shot by anything (a lot of ill doers) or a hard case that requires a central nervous system hit or perhaps a direct hit on the heart before it pumps fresh oxygenated blood into the system. A pelvic girdle hit might also stop their mobility by causing collapse depending on the degree of damage (big heavy slow bullets like a 45 ACP work better for this).

In fact, I bet a lot of big blue departments have a strong desire for at least some number of straight-up crooked cops. You need people with flexible morality and hopefully a lot of compromising evidence against them in your pocket, for the day when you get a call saying "Look, Seth Rich is 'getting robbed' tonight, and it's going to go sideways, right?" Even if the cops aren't pulling the trigger themselves, you can count on them to "investigate" correctly.

I love watching the old Western shows like Gunsmoke, Tales of Wells Fargo, The Rifleman, Bonanza, etc. Occasionally you would see a wing-shot or shooting a gun out of someone's hand for purely dramatic effect but mostly, they didn't fuck around and it was center mass as it really was in those days.

Jim, it gets complicated because you have statutory law plus court decisions (often very old in nature). Branca's Law of Self Defense is pretty good and so is Mitch Vilos's Self Defense Laws in 50 States. One of the keys in a place like CA is take a look at the pattern jury instructions for self defense (the big jurisdictions have premade jury instructions on common criminal issues).

And, depending on where you are, rural cops can be their owned brand of awful. The SD where I grew up was stunningly corrupt. Probably a higher percentage of crooked cops than any big city department, given that it was all of them except one that I knew of (he was independently wealthy and kept himself clean).
Or you can get the kind of State police corruption like the Clintons had in AR - a cadre of dependable guys to help out with the rapes, murders and drug-running.

Shotgun slugs are threat enders in teh right place but a real pain in the shoulder to practice with them.
Got tired of the recoil and switched off to AR's which contrary to the press are more like updated M1 Carbines. Anything over about 2000 fps you start getting substantial hydrostatic shock effects from a rifle wound plus a 55 gr. HP penetrates less than even a 9mm slug through drywall but does fine in living things. Slugs penetrating walls is another reason I switched my main home defense plan to rifles.

Anything over about 2000 fps you start getting substantial hydrostatic shock effects from a rifle wound plus a 55 gr. HP penetrates less than even a 9mm slug through drywall but does fine in living things. Slugs penetrating walls is another reason I switched my main home defense plan to rifles.

On the PA Avenue side, there was less people hanging around as the grocery store there was independent and did not allow such. Went to the Maryland Ave side a couple of times but it visibly bordered on a rougher part of DC. NE DC or SE DC were no go zones for me.

FYI, a 20 gauge shotgun shell is about .615 in inches and a 12 gauge is about .729.
Heavy and relatively slow slugs can do you substantial harm. A cop, I think in New Mexico, was shot by a 45-70 rifle slug and died despite wearing a vest. The 45-70 slug did not penetrate but had enough momentum to literally crush the chest of the officer enough to cause a spike in blood pressure leading to an aneurysm in the brain. RIP.

Not only is it almost impossible to control someone resisting without controlling the head/neck, but the irony is that most "choke holds" (blood chokes) are the most humane, least damaging ways to subdue someone imaginable. In BJJ we choke each other out constantly. So long as you're not on the trache, you're good.
Same with hiring female LE. Good in theory, but almost always leaves a gap in the force continuum between "using your outside voice" and lethal force.
Bring back the nightstick. Train cops on how to use it. Institute real physical requirements for cops (including minimum size/strength) and shootings will go down. That and 99% of the time you won't win stupid prizes unless you play stupid games.
