FBI Says Violence Against Jews Is in Decline. Jews Aren’t Buying It.
Along with a Department of Defense which has identified America's greatest national security threat as "climate change," we have an FBI that has identified "white supremacy" and other forms of so-called "far right extremism" as the chief threats to domestic peace and tranquility.
All well and good, until you realize who gets to do the defining of those terms. The fact is that if you were to count all the avowed racist/white supremacists in this nation, be they Aryan Brotherhood or the KKK, you're looking at probably a number barely hitting 12-15,000. That's in a nation of about 330 MILLION. So, in essence a non-existent nothing-burger, statistically speaking. But, when you start defining parents raising their voices at school board meetings who object to CRT and transexual indoctrination, along with anyone who objects to vaccine mandates, or the stolen elections of 2020, the FBI suddenly has a target rich environment. Yet, with anti-Semitism on the rise, the FBI doesn't seem to want to talk about it. In fact, they're going to great lengths to cover it up.The FBI’s latest annual report shows a decline in violence against Jews, findings that are at odds with Jewish watchdog groups who say anti-Semitic hate crimes have hit their highest levels in history during the past two years. The FBI’s 2021 findings, released at the end of last year, have sparked accusations the federal law enforcement agency is deflating these statistics at a time when the American Jewish community is facing an unprecedented wave of anti-Semitism. At least one watchdog group is calling on Congress to investigate how and why the FBI underreported anti-Jewish hate crimes. "At a time of record anti-Semitic hate crimes, it is appalling that the FBI's data-gathering has been so badly botched," said Kenneth L. Marcus, chairman of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, a watchdog group that combats Jew hatred. "This massive failure has undermined the purposes of hate crimes data precisely when we most need the data. If the FBI doesn't quickly correct this problem, congressional committees will need to ask some serious questions." Marcus said the FBI’s 2021 statistics on hate crimes against Jews are "essentially useless" due to new reporting procedures that omitted statistics from organizations typically included in the federal agency’s yearly assessment. While the FBI claimed that violence against Jews decreased last year, groups such as the Anti-Defamation League reported that 2021 saw the highest levels of anti-Semitic violence on record. A report from the AMCHA Initiative, a Jewish advocacy group, last year found that assaults on Jewish students and their identities doubled in the 2021 and 2022 academic year. Marcus, an attorney and former staff director of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, said the FBI’s inaccurate reporting is likely to prompt congressional oversight.
Gee, you'd think with all those rabid ultra-MAGA white supremacists around - especially Trump who's got the best cover: Jewish kids and grandkids - the FBI would be rounding up Klansmen by the bushel. Americans Against Antisemitism (AAA) released a report revealing that 97% of hate crimes against Jews in New York between 2018 and 2022 were committed by other minority groups. AAA’s report was first posted on AAA founder Dov Hikind’s Twitter account Wednesday. The report documented 194 cases of assault against Jews from April 2018 to August 2022, and, in 99 of those assaults, official reports included the ethnicity of the perpetrator revealing 97% were committed by other minorities. Black perpetrators were responsible for 69% of physical or verbal assaults, Asians made up 17%, Hispanics accounted for 11% and white attackers committed 3%. . . “[T]his report is focused entirely on the subset of assault (verbal and physical) as a hate crime. This is an important distinction because very often the wild stats on anti-Jewish hate crimes are often downplayed as ‘mostly against property,’ so it is important to quantify the extent of anti-Jewish assaults on persons which shows that even when controlling for crimes against property the number of attacks on Jewish persons remains the highest of all target groups,” Bitton explained. . . . . . “[I]t’s the first study to examine how hate crime violence can be disproportionately affecting a particular subset of a target group and thus it’s the first data to support what has only been suspected anecdotally which is that Orthodox Jews bear the disproportionate share of antisemitic violence,” Bitton noted Even more concerning was the low number of convictions: Only two criminals were given prison sentences and less than 10 were convicted. Bitton also pointed out the importance of where the crimes occurred, stating that normally victims are attacked when they are the minority in a particular area, but the report demonstrates that Jews are most often attacked in their own neighborhoods.I guess the mystery is solved.

Other than that, interesting to see the Asian number. Is that some weird categorizing of Muslims as Asian? If the Arabs et al. were categorized as White that number would be higher. I can't imagine they're being lobbed in as Black or Hispanic.

I'm confused. Is the 194 cases supposed to be the grand total in the four-plus years from April 2018 to August 2022? Or were those just the cases considered in the report?
A grand total of 194 cases over four years in a city with 9 million people seems far too low given there seem to be hate crimes against Jews like every day.
But if indeed there has only been 194 hate crimes against Jews in four years out of 9 million people, then that's barely a rounding error in the grand scheme of crime in NYC.

It's probably bigger than that. The Aryan Brotherhood is pretty large on its own, with membership of around 20,000 - but most of them are in prison already, given that the AB is essentially a prison-based mafia organization. The Klan probably has about 10,000. All of those numbers are low because it's almost impossible to measure because nobody will admit to it. So assume the number is really about three times that and round up and we're at around 100,000 people. That's a fair number, but it won't quite fill LSU's Tiger Stadium (and most of them are probably already in prison anyway).
White supremacism is a non-issue in the United States. It might as well not exist at all. It's such a non-issue that we can't even perform a reliable census of membership because nobody will admit to it.

Unless you're committed to the cause, it's hard to identify other kinds of Jews. Some conservative Jews have externally-visible markers, but not all do. Reform Jews, Reconstrunctionists or non-practicing have no outward markers. Sure, you could stake out a synagogue on the High Holy Days to get a list (or just attack it directly), but if you're just wanting to beat someone up or rob him as a target of opportunity and you have a chip on your shoulder about the Jews, the Orthodox and Hassadim are your targets, because they're the ones you can spot reliably.

I think the task is made much easier by the flimsy and arbitrary way in which "hate crime" can be defined and applied. Any crime committed by a white against a black is a candidate for a hate crime. By contrast, if a black guy attacks a Jew, unless the black guy is yelling out "I hate Jews" at the time, it won't be classified as a hate crime. This is one of the reasons I'm against the whole "hate crime" concept. It's ultimately meaningless because it was designed from the jump to be purely political.

What the debate about speaker says is that a certain percentage of the GOP in Congress want a different path and it could just be more effective pr for failure theater. The payoff is the split of the GOP, or its destruction. The GOP as it is currently formulated is not on our side and is tightly aligned with the Democrats and the deep state on all things. It is firmly in the Complex. This dumpster fire - which I think will be put out and McCarthy will get his way after some back-room dealmaking that preserves the status quo - is the first sign I've seen in a long time that anything is even remotely working. It is a false hope and I know that, but the GOP is not fit for purpose. A fracture or destruction of the GOP is a net benefit at this point. McCarthy or some Democrat at speaker makes damn little difference. He's on the same side as the rest of them. A humiliating, possibly unrecoverable disaster, though, will expose opportunities for reform.

The way these sorts of multiple ballots exist is that they don't just stay in stasis forever. There will be changes, and it seems like after 2 ballots, the holdouts are holding firm. They have already burned their bridges with McCarthy and have nothing to gain by folding now.
Either some GOPe's vote for Jeffries (might happen), some Dems vote for McCarthy (so not happening), or McCarthy steps aside. I'm not sure McCarthy ends up as Speaker now.

It's not really "awkward". Of any ethnicity (aside from perhaps Gypsies), overwhelmingly the population does not perpetrate crimes. The proportion that commits crimes varies over time within each group and is generally easy to explain. It's also not that hard from a governance perspective to substantially reduce crime. Much like being fat, there's nothing inevitable about the whole situation.

The corruption has to be salvaged.

Granted, these kinds of events aren't the best venues to evaluate anyone's financial acumen. But I always got a used-car-salesman vibe from the guy. Plenty of presidential nominating conventions went into overtime prior to the primary system. As the balloting goes on, the incumbent generally has made his strongest stand at the beginning and ironically, McCarthy by actively trying to lower GOP numbers in the House may have worked himself out of the Speakership as a consequence.
Party leaders ultimately work for the members and those that forget it become Joe Cannon, Gingrich, Boehner, or even Bob Michel. The US House resembles the House of Commons internally to some extent with the power of the back benchers waning and waxing depending on the the context of the leadership elections.

It's not really "awkward". Of any ethnicity (aside from perhaps Gypsies), overwhelmingly the population does not perpetrate crimes. The proportion that commits crimes varies over time within each group and is generally easy to explain. It's also not that hard from a governance perspective to substantially reduce crime. Much like being fat, there's nothing inevitable about the whole situation.

Most criminals come from broken homes. Career criminality happen through gangs, which are sort of like enterprises or little countries. There are multiple stages at which this can be addressed and people have done so before. Break any part of the "supply chain" and crime craters.

In the small town I used to live it, we had a thoroughly corrupt Republican machinery full of good 'ole boys and recklessly bad behavior across the board. The only time I've ever voted for a Democrat was for the county commission, because she was a super-based conservative but had to run as a non-Republican to get on the ballot.
Anyway, the sheriff-for-life there - a violent gangster - had "SHERIFF" tattooed on his forearm. Getting the elected office you hold tattooed on yourself is the same kind of hubris.
He finally met the richly-deserved end of his tenure when his department fouled up a drug/racketeering raid so badly (people dead, humiliating lack of police competence, etc.) that the state investigators - who had been wanting to go after him for *years* - finally got the excuse they needed.

What matters is 218, not really who is speaker because the House sets its own rules over EVERYTHING every new Congress unlike the Senate. FWIW, the House could allow Jeffries to be speaker with no authority whatsoever other than sit in the chair.
Texas House, for a long time has had RINO speakers win out over GOP stalwarts because the Dems get together and vote in the RINO. A few places, had the reverse such as the NY Senate where a breakaway Dem faction kept the State GOP in power in the Senate.
What it does though is deny the uniparty sanction for failure theater. The votes on legislation matter, who is speaker is theatrics.

Except that it is only 6-7 members in the caucus who want to turn over the tables and basically run a coup against leadership. They want to set the agenda for the other 200+ members.
It doesn't work like that.
They get a chance to vote on every issue. Some of them will also get committee chairs to help set the agenda and bill cadence. Leadership has also already come up with over 8 bills with House members that will represent their initial agenda.
This is nothing more than a few members who don't want McCarthy. Not that I blame them he's not my choice, but right now he's the only one who will come even close.
Frankly, if I'm in leadership I would play hardball and tell these people to F off. That they will never see a committee chair and their bills will die in hell. I would make them an anathema to the rest of the caucus. They have plenty of power, much more than in the past to make sure the GOPe stays in check. This is way beyond that at this point.

In 2019, the Congressional Black Caucus interceded on behalf of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Caucus member, blocking her censure and objecting to a resolution that would have condemned what Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) characterized as her “vile, hate-filled, antisemitic, anti-Israel bigotry.” Congress then approved an all-inclusive resolution that denounced “antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism and other forms of bigotry.”
And then came C19, pent up people, and even more hostility that began boiling up, especially once the lockdowns ended.

At its worst it is consciously manipulated to be weaponized against the dis-favored groups of the day.
I can understand the superficially appealing aspects of the concept initially. But at this point it shouldn't be about "accurate hate crime" stats but about nuking the whole concept from space. Metaphorically of course.

Common, every day crimes like murder, rape and larceny and special crimes which are hateful like misgendering, misinformation and speech violence. It takes a special brand of people to prosecute special crimes . We don't live in a sane society any longer

A couple of years ago I dug up all the crime stats I could find and I surprised at vanishingly small number of "hate crimes" nationally. Sen. Booker has stirred up all kinds of mischief over the last few years by claiming that hate crimes had increased by 30% year to year, if I remember correctly. What he never mentioned in all his demagoguery is that increase in scalar count amounted to a vanishingly small number of instances. Hate crimes are a farce and can be handled by existing laws.

McCarthy is a bad choice. His district is California so that probably means this is going to raise his visibility enough to threaten his reelection. He cannot be radically conservative, and keep his seat. The Speaker has to be from a very safe seat to follow ideological mandates.
